00:00This is a factory farm maternity suite, and this is life for a mother pig.

00:08Caged in an industrial device called a farrowing crate, it is here that in discomfort she must give birth.

00:17Denied a life worth living, denied the ability to mother her babies,

00:24her worth is based on how many piglets she produces.

00:27You didn't know, did you?

00:38Mother pigs are confined to these crates for up to six weeks.

00:43Her piglets are taken from her once capable of consuming an industry diet designed to grow them to slaughter weight.

00:50Mothers are then impregnated again, before being locked back in a farrowing crate to give birth to more babies.

00:59In a natural environment, mother pigs will carefully build a nest to ensure they give birth to their young in cleanliness and comfort.

01:08But in factory farms, she has no choice but to urinate, defecate and give birth to her babies on the hard floor of this crate.

01:19As a result, aside from physical discomfort, these intelligent and sensitive animals are known to suffer acute stress and depression.

01:31These cruel devices are designed to maximize production of pork, bacon and ham products to meet consumer demand.

01:42The thing is, you didn't know, did you?

01:49Nor do many others, and the pig industry understandably doesn't want you to know.
