Displacement camps turned into temporary learning spaces for children in Sudan
Transcript
00:00Sudan is facing an education crisis.
00:09Millions of children have had their schooling disrupted.
00:12For Asra Saba, a displaced student, her dreams have been shattered.
00:17After falling behind due to the conflict, she now has to put in extra time and work,
00:22all by herself, to try to catch up.
00:26My future and my life have been put on hold.
00:30I had hoped to become a doctor, but due to the school closures, our future and lives are ruined.
00:36We want the war to end so that we can return to our homes, families and friends.
00:45Volunteers across Sudan have done their best to establish educational tents
00:50that provide free schooling for children like Asra.
00:53In one displacement shelter in the eastern city of Port Sudan,
00:56volunteer teachers organize games and various activities.
01:00They teach children how to read and draw, giving them an opportunity to study.
01:05The initiative began during a heat stroke in Port Sudan.
01:12There was a group of sisters, including Anas, who worked at the center,
01:16who encouraged us to take up the initiative.
01:18Together with a group of doctors, we began sessions to support the children psychologically.
01:23We began our initiative by providing them with crayons and A4 paper.
01:28We taught them how to draw, read and write Arabic and included computer lessons and English language courses.
01:35Port Sudan, the capital of the Red Sea state, is considered one of the relatively safer areas
01:46where displaced civilians have sought refuge.
01:49Authorities there have worked to keep some of the schools open,
01:52providing children with a sense of normalcy, even though resources remain inadequate.
01:57We have resettled the displaced and if you enter Port Sudan now,
02:02you won't feel the effects of the war in the camps.
02:04We have given one school to the displaced for every two schools
02:08and we have given them tents and sheltered them in the nearby schools.
02:12We have accepted displaced students and they have begun their studies at all levels.
02:17For now, the schools that remain open and the safe learning spaces
02:21are ensuring some children's futures are safeguarded.
02:24But much more needs to be done for the children of Sudan
02:28to affirm the UN's resolution of inclusive and equitable education
02:32for learners in conflict-affected countries.
