00:00I was contacted by a number of my older clients who had come to Spain seeking sort of a peaceful later life and they were under shocking harassment from Hacienda.
00:20They didn't understand how in the 21st century Spain could behave in this way, could allow people to behave in this way.
00:29And in fact, they have so much power and it's power not granted to them by the Cortes, the parliament, but power granted by a government decree really isn't law at all.
00:45And that's fitting because the Hacienda does not obey the law.
00:51In Spain, individuals don't have the presumption of innocence.
00:56In fact, it's the opposite. There's a presumption of veracity.
01:00There's a presumption that what the Hacienda says, what their auditors say is correct.
01:05And we all know that the auditors are paid off, corruptly paid a percentage of the money they managed to extract from individual citizens.
01:17So you have a climate of fear in Spain, the likes of which I haven't seen in 45 years of practice, including Russia, including Africa, South America.
01:32The fear of Spanish professionals is outrageous.
01:36There are learned studies about this that say the interest of people to comply with tax goes down as government corruption goes up.
01:46Well, welcome to Spain. It is like the Chavez government, but it's the Sanchez government.
01:52Every day you're met with us. I fought Chavez in Venezuela, so I know what early Chavismo looks like.
01:58And this is it. And everyone is silent. Everyone is intimidated.
02:05Our firm is not taking these people on as clients. This is not a marketing campaign for my firm.
02:13We have a very small firm. It's a firm that handles very specific cases.
02:18And to be honest, we simply want the Spanish system to change.
