00:00Traders preparing for the annual Deepavali Bazaar in Little India, Brickfields, experienced a setback
00:09on Wednesday morning when several tents collapsed following heavy rain and strong winds.
00:14The makeshift stalls along Jalan Tun Sambanthan were set up just four days before the bazaar
00:18opened this week. The association representing the petty traders in Little India said the
00:24structures were flimsy and poorly secured. They said the tents were seemed to be set up in a rush
00:29and they were disappointed with the shoddy work. Officers from Kuala Lumpur City Hall came to the
00:34site following the incident to rectify the situation. The bazaar runs until October 19th
00:39and traders will only begin selling their products about 10 days before Deepavali.
00:44This year's bazaar was marred by weeks of tension after shop owners protested a balloting exercise
00:49that allocated prime spots in front of their premises to outsiders. It also marked the first
00:55time in more than a decade that City Hall took full control of the bazaar as part of its policy
01:00to centralize the management of all festive bazaars in the city following disputes over lot distribution.
01:06Previously, the allocation and management of bazaar lots were handled by the respective traders' associations.
