00:00Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.
00:21Days of Our Lives, a new dramatic serial starring McDonnell Carey.
00:30Hello, Addie.
00:48Well, where is she?
00:49She's upstairs wrestling.
00:50Oh, honestly, if it isn't one thing with that kid, it's another.
00:52She's not happy unless she's putting us through a ringer.
00:54She's very upset, Ben.
00:56I should think she would be.
00:57Oh, yeah, that's a nice note, that is, being arrested for shotletting.
01:01Oh, say, Mickey, you didn't see any reporters around that precinct, did you?
01:05No.
01:06Well, at least that's something.
01:08Well, I never liked that Carol Proctor, and Diana's just a thing.
01:11I told Julie time and time again not to hang around with them.
01:14Well, maybe their parents said the same thing about Julie.
01:17What do you mean?
01:19Well, after all, Julie was the ringleader.
01:21I thought you said the other girls egged her into it.
01:23Well, that's what Julie said.
01:24Oh, and you don't believe her.
01:25Look, Ben, the detective saw her take that stole.
01:28He's a detective, and he was an eyewitness.
01:29Well, so that spell's open and shut case for you, huh?
01:32Some lawyer.
01:33Now, just a minute.
01:34You two, please stop arguing, and let's go in there and talk this over calmly and quietly.
01:38It's a lovely dress, Addie.
01:49Oh, yes, I rather like it.
01:50It's an original.
01:52Were you and Ben at a party?
01:54The Palmers.
01:56Their daughter just announced her engagement to Rick Butler.
01:59You remember Rick?
02:00Yes.
02:03Now, there was a catch you could have had if you'd just exerted yourself.
02:06Good money, family.
02:09Handsome as a movie star.
02:11Oh, why ever did you let him walk away?
02:14I didn't.
02:15If you remember, Addie, he was the one who walked.
02:18Oh, you could have won him back easily.
02:20But you sat around and nursed your hurt pride.
02:23Well, it all happened for the best, Addie.
02:25If it hadn't, I would never have met Tony.
02:27Oh, Tony.
02:29Yes, Tony, the man I'm going to marry.
02:32And you expect to live on a teacher's salary.
02:35Addie, there's something you don't understand.
02:37Tony and I love each other.
02:40That's nuts.
02:40What are you two sisters mumbling about?
02:42We came here for a reason, didn't we, Addie?
02:44Well, where's Julie?
02:45Get her down here, and let's get to the bottom of this mess.
02:52Look, I don't pretend to know why Julie did what she did,
02:57but I do know that she's in a state about it.
02:59My suggestion is that we talk about it first.
03:01I don't want to be rude, Marie,
03:03but after all, you're only Julie's aunt.
03:05We're her parents.
03:06I know that, but Julie and I are very close.
03:09Well, you can afford to be objective, Marie,
03:11but a mother has certain responsibilities.
03:13We have to be hard on Julie occasionally.
03:17Maybe you're not hard enough.
03:18Oh, what do you and Marie know about him, Mickey?
03:20Neither one of you ever had children.
03:21But what's that got to do with the price of tomatoes?
03:24You know, my sixth-grade schoolteacher was an old-made spinster,
03:27but she had more perception and understanding
03:29about her 33 pupils than all the moms on Mother's Day.
03:32You know, having children doesn't necessarily make you an expert.
03:34Well, it sure helps.
03:35And the mere act of having a child
03:37doesn't make you a model of parents.
03:38Well, give up, Mickey, will you?
03:39What's the point in wrangling?
03:41It's not our image we're trying to preserve.
03:43It's Julie's, isn't it?
03:48All right, Mickey, let's get out of business.
03:50What exactly do the police have on Julie?
03:52All right.
03:53They've got the stolen fur piece of evidence.
03:55They've got what the detective saw,
03:56plus statements from the other two girls.
03:58But Julie didn't actually remove that stole from the store, did she?
04:01No.
04:01Well, then that blows the shoplifting charge.
04:03Not necessarily.
04:04Julie's a juvenile.
04:05Her intentions count just as much as the act itself.
04:07Now, how can anyone prove what her intentions were?
04:10Well, what do you think her intentions were?
04:12Just, uh, just seeing whether she could get away with something.
04:14A childish prank, no more nor less.
04:17Ben, she took that stole.
04:18Well, give her five minutes more and she would have put it back.
04:21Oh, you know that for a fact.
04:22Uh, look, look.
04:23She's got a closet full of clothes.
04:25At least, uh, two fur pieces, uh,
04:26worth more than that, that mink-dyed raccoon or whatever it was.
04:30Well, why would you want to steal that?
04:31That is something you had better ask Julie about.
04:34We've given her absolutely anything she's ever wanted.
04:37Julie has no reason under the sun to steal.
04:39Look, what you two don't understand is
04:41that the law doesn't give a tinker's damn about reasons.
04:44Facts are what count.
04:45And the fact in this case is Julie was caught stealing.
04:48Uh, Mickey, you keep calling this a case.
04:50That's right. It is a case.
04:51No, no, not yet it isn't.
04:54Well, what do you mean by that?
04:55Uh, have you, uh, have you ever heard of people dropping charges?
04:58Are you suggesting that that detective might...
05:00Oh, forget that myopic detective.
05:02No, I'm talking about Bartlett's department store.
05:04They haven't made a formal charge yet, have they?
05:06Bartlett's has had a number of thefts recently.
05:08That's why they alerted the police department to put on that special detective.
05:11Uh, you're still not answering my question.
05:13Have Bartlett's made a formal charge?
05:15Ben, if they haven't, they will.
05:17Yeah, maybe.
05:18And maybe not.
05:20Well, now, just exactly what is that supposed to mean?
05:23I deal with Bartlett's all the time.
05:25Only last month I handled a loan for him to renovate the store.
05:28Rearranged, believe me.
05:30Oh.
05:30And the whole case would be hushed up, huh?
05:32In a matter of minutes.
05:33Is that the way you want it?
05:35Of course it is.
05:37Nip the thing in the bud before it blossoms out and becomes a cheap gossip for every house in town.
05:41Oh, yeah.
05:42I can nip it in the bud, put wraps over it, pretend it never happened.
05:44Is that it?
05:45What do you think big business is?
05:47Ben, Julie's not big business.
05:49She's your daughter.
05:50She's a human being.
05:51She's got herself in a scrape and we're going to get it wiped off the books.
05:55Well, not I.
05:56Not this lawyer.
05:57That's not the way I operate.
05:59Our lawyers are a dime a dozen.
06:00I'll get my own on this.
06:02No, Ben.
06:02I want Mickey to handle this.
06:04He's Julie's uncle.
06:05I feel better about it being kept in the family.
06:07Mickey doesn't want to handle it.
06:09And I never said that.
06:10What I said was that I wasn't about to handle it your way.
06:14Well, is your way any better?
06:17That depends on what you expect.
06:18Well, I'll tell you what I expect.
06:20I want to get this dirty mess cleaned up before people start to talk about it.
06:23Will you tell me something, Ben?
06:25What really concerns you?
06:27Helping Julie or saving yourself a little embarrassment?
06:30Hi.
06:31Julie.
06:39Are you all right, Julie?
06:41Yeah, sure I am.
06:42Well, Julie, your mother and I are very concerned about you.
06:46How was the party?
06:47Never mind that now.
06:49I'm sorry I interrupted your fun.
06:51Julie.
06:52We came as quickly as we could.
06:54Yeah, I know.
06:56Why did you do it, darling?
06:58Oh, look, if you really wanted that burpees, you might have asked me about it.
07:02After all, Christmas is coming.
07:04Why, sure.
07:04We were giving it to you.
07:06That's right.
07:07You know, your father and I have never denied you anything.
07:09You know that.
07:11Oh, why did you steal?
07:12I didn't steal.
07:14It was just a joke.
07:15Well, it wasn't a very funny joke, Julie.
07:17People saw you, and now there's a big thing involving the police.
07:19I don't call that funny.
07:20You know, the trouble with you, young lady, is we've been too lenient with you.
07:26Your mother let you hang around with anybody.
07:27Oh, not just a minute, Ben.
07:28It's not my fault.
07:29Well, of course it's your fault.
07:30She's only 16.
07:31You're her mother.
07:33You should know what she's up to.
07:34That's what a mother's for.
07:36Oh.
07:37And what's a father for?
07:39Golf at the club?
07:41Cocktails at the men's bar?
07:42Poker two nights a week?
07:43And making a darn good living.
07:44Don't forget that.
07:45Oh, I don't forget it.
07:46You don't let me.
07:47But we'd all appreciate some of your time every now and then, too.
07:50Stones and glass houses, Addie.
07:52Now, I've noticed you manage to keep your days busy.
07:54If it isn't a bridge, or it's tennis, or...
07:57Will you just stop bickering long enough to think about Julie's color?
07:59Marie, I've asked you to stay out of this.
08:05Very well.
08:06I will.
08:07Aunt Marie!
08:09Oh, honey, I'm sorry.
08:12Your parents want me out of this.
08:13And frankly, I think it's time they begin to cope with the situation themselves.
08:17Goodbye, sweetie.
08:24Look, Ben, you want to meet me in my office at noon tomorrow?
08:26We can go over all this.
08:27There may be no need to meet.
08:29I've got one or two angles I want to try first.
08:31You mind telling me what they are?
08:33Your angles, Addie?
08:34Oh, not yet.
08:35I'll call you tomorrow at your office.
08:40Okay.
08:42I'll wait to hear from you.
08:44Good night to me, Addie.
08:45Oh, thank you, Mickey.
08:46We appreciate your help.
08:49Yeah.
08:49Yeah.
08:49Well, nothing like an eager beaver young ambulance, Jason.
09:00Mickey is a fine lawyer.
09:02Oh, you know that.
09:03All right.
09:03He's your brother, and I tolerate him.
09:05Let's leave it at that, huh?
09:07Look, Mom and Dad will be down soon if we don't get out of here, and let's all go home.
09:11I don't want to go home.
09:13Now, what do you mean you don't want to go home?
09:16Well, you've got a lot of nerve telling your mother and me what you wanted.
09:20Well, from now on, my girl, it's not going to be what you want.
09:22It's going to be what we want.
09:24Do you read me?
09:25Yes, I read you.
09:27Well, then get your coat on and come along with us.
09:29But...
09:29Well, bags checked straight through, Tony.
09:42Here are the suns.
09:44Thanks, Dad.
09:45Is Jim going to meet you at the airport?
09:47Yeah, if he can get off class early enough.
09:50Otherwise, I'll just grab a cab over to his apartment.
09:52I'm glad you're going to stay with Jim.
09:54It'll be less cold and unfriendly like a hotel.
09:57Yeah, well, if I know Jimmy, we'll spend most of our evenings just...
09:59...yacking about Salem.
10:01Well, I suppose there's a lot of candidates to be checked, Tony.
10:05It'll take time to process all the data.
10:08Oh, Tony will get it.
10:09I'm not worried.
10:11That's spoken like a true bride.
10:13Well, now, if your kids will excuse me, I have to check them home in flight.
10:17See you in a minute.
10:19Thanks, Dad.
10:23I'm going to miss that guy.
10:25Hey, how about me?
10:27No, I mean, after we're married, living in Boston.
10:32I really am going to miss Dad.
10:35He's going to miss you, too.
10:36You've been so close.
10:39He's a very special guy.
10:42Hey, not because he's my father, you know.
10:43I mean, I'd feel the same way about him even if he wasn't.
10:46You're very much like him.
10:48Yeah, I wish I was.
10:49Well, Dad's got a, what, an inner strength?
10:57You know, like if he were on a lifeboat in the middle of the Atlantic, somehow he'd survive.
11:06And I think somehow he'd make everybody else survive, too.
11:09Oh, I still think he's very much like you.
11:14Thanks.
11:15I'd like to think so.
11:17I respect my father more than anybody else.
11:20I'm very proud of him.
11:22I mean, the way he pulled through after Mother died.
11:25Kept the house going.
11:28Looking after me.
11:30And working night and day.
11:31I know.
11:34I just hope that...
11:36I hope I can do as well for my own son.
11:41Our daughter?
11:43Yeah, our daughter.
11:44Our twin?
11:46Now, that's a very nice idea.
11:49We could have one of both.
11:51Tony, if we do have children...
11:53What do you mean this?
11:54When we have children.
11:56Hey, that's better, because I'm an only child, remember.
11:59And I fully intend to have three or four children.
12:03Are you placing your order now?
12:06Yes, ma'am.
12:07You make a note of it.
12:11Look, when you, uh...
12:12When you get word about the fellowship, I'll apply for a transfer from Salem to Cambridge.
12:17In the middle of the semester?
12:18Well, with the holidays and everything, it's just a matter of a couple of months.
12:22And I can start off a new semester with you.
12:25Wouldn't it be fun to be on the same campus working?
12:27Well, it'd be disconcerting, I'll say that for it.
12:32I'd see you walking across the campus, and I'd think to myself,
12:35Hey, did she or did she not send my shirt out to the laundry?
12:39That all you'd be thinking?
12:41No.
12:43No, I'd also be thinking, hey, where's my wife?
12:48Only why doesn't she remember to shut the windows in the morning so we don't freeze?
12:52Tony!
12:52Hey, a little back again like a bad thing.
12:56Oh, hi.
12:57You okay, Tony?
12:59Yeah.
13:00Okay.
13:03Just, uh, stay well, will you, Dad?
13:07And, uh, give me a favor.
13:11Take care, my girl.
13:12Hmm?
13:13I will.
13:13I will.
13:13I will.
13:16You'd better hurry, son.
13:18They'll be announcing departure in a minute.
13:21Yeah.
13:22Well, who came, uh, two favorite people?
13:28Oh, Tony.
13:36Come on.
13:48Yes?
13:49Oh, uh, send them in, will you?
14:07Mr. Franklin?
14:08Oh, how do you do, Mr. Olsen?
14:10It's nice to see you again.
14:12Oh, yeah.
14:12I don't think you've met my wife.
14:14Pleased to meet you, Mrs. Olsen.
14:16And won't you sit down?
14:22Well, Mr. Franklin, I'm a very busy man.
14:24So are you.
14:25Let's not beat about the bush.
14:26I'm sure you know why we're here.
14:28Yes, I'm afraid I do.
14:29It was a very distressing incident.
14:32And I certainly regret it.
14:33Yeah.
14:33Yeah.
14:33Yeah.
14:33Yeah.
14:33Oh, my daughter never meant to, uh, take that fur piece, you understand, Mr. Franklin.
14:40It was, uh, she and her girlfriends were merely indulging in a rather childish prank.
14:46Yes.
14:46Regretful.
14:47Very regretful.
14:48Yeah, the police have a tendency to, uh, want to blow these things up way beyond their
14:52importance.
14:53Yes, I suppose they do.
14:54Oh, Julie is a good girl, Mr. Franklin.
14:57Oh, she'd never do anything deliberately bad.
15:00No, I'm sure not, Mrs. Olsen.
15:02Now, the police haven't, uh, a leg to stand on once the, uh, once the charges are dropped.
15:06You, uh, you know that, don't you, Mr. Franklin?
15:08I suppose that is true.
15:10Well, uh, there it is.
15:12Bartlett's dropped the charges and the whole affair's forgotten, right?
15:14Right, Mr. Franklin?
15:19Well, I don't know that we can.
15:23Uh, unfortunately...
15:25Unfortunately what?
15:27The charges against your daughter can't be dropped.
15:30What do you mean, they can't be dropped?
15:33I'm terribly sorry, Mr. Olsen.
15:35I hate to do this to a man in your position, but, well, actually, I'm helpless.
15:40The machinery is already in motion.
15:42But what are you talking about?
15:43What machinery?
15:44Well, you see, Mr. Olsen, Bartlett's, like the many other big chain stores,
15:49are affiliated with the National Crime Detection Association.
15:52So?
15:53So the association officials and the insurance company agents have seen the whole affair.
15:59The, um, attempted, uh, theft on, uh, television.
16:05Television?
16:06Closed circuit, television.
16:08Most offices in big department stores are equipped with sets like these.
16:13And actually, it's our only protection against the continual shoplifting that goes on.
16:19Not that your daughter is a willful shoplifter.
16:23Now, let me get this straight.
16:24You mean to say the whole incident my daughter was involved in was televised?
16:28On tape.
16:29And then transfer it to film.
16:31And the film has already been shown for the association and to the insurance company.
16:36Well, how did you know in advance that this, uh, this incident was going to take place?
16:40Well, we didn't really know.
16:42But there have been so many thefts here recently that we have cameras trained on certain key spots in this store all day long.
16:50And the fur department was one of them.
16:52There were six thefts in that department last month.
16:55So one of our cameras has been stationed in that department for the past week.
16:59Oh, I don't believe it.
17:02Well, this, uh, sounds like something out of a cloak and dagger story.
17:06Well, it's true.
17:07I assure you, I only wish it weren't for your sense.
17:10But weren't there two other girls involved?
17:12Now, doesn't your tape show them, A.D., my daughter, on?
17:16I'm afraid not, Mrs. Olsen.
17:19There was only one girl involved in the actual theft.
17:22And the camera shows her to be your daughter.
17:24Oh, I just can't believe it.
17:29No, I don't believe it.
17:31Would you, um, like to see the film for yourself?
17:37You've, uh, you've got a chance?
17:38Yes, and I can have it set up to play back on closed-circuit television
17:41so that you and Mrs. Olsen can view it here in the office.
17:46If you have time, that is.
17:49We'll make the time.
17:51Very well.
17:54And, Miss Leavitt, would you, um, have Mr. Crispin set up the Olsen film
18:01as quickly as possible?
18:04We'd like to see it.
18:16Thanks for driving me home, Mr. Merritt.
18:18Of course.
18:20Well, Marie, I guess we're a couple of grass widows now.
18:25I really am going to miss him.
18:28Yeah, me too.
18:30But he'll be back before you know it.
18:33That's what I keep reminding myself.
18:35Oh, besides, you're going to be very busy with the wedding plans.
18:39Oh, that reminds me.
18:41Mom asked if you would wear your uniform at the wedding.
18:45She really wants me to wear it.
18:46Well, she, she thinks it would lend an impressive touch.
18:50Well, I'm sure the airline would be delighted.
18:51Mr. Merritt, I hope you won't miss Tony too much.
18:59I mean, after we go away to Boston.
19:02Well, I hope you'll come and visit us often.
19:04Of course.
19:05But I want you to promise me something.
19:08What's that?
19:10Well, if...
19:12Now, mind you, it's a very big gift.
19:13But if you and Tony decide to stay here in Salem, I wish you'd come and move in with me.
19:22With you?
19:23Sure.
19:24It's a big house.
19:25Well, I'll be rattling around in there all by myself.
19:30And anyhow, I'm away on a flight most of the time.
19:33You and Tony can have the house all to yourselves.
19:35That's a lovely house.
19:37It's yours.
19:39Well, I'd have to ask Tony about it, of course.
