00:00Afghanistan has entered an unprecedented digital isolation.
00:04No internet, no phone services, no digital connectivity at all after the Taliban decided
00:10to cut off all services nationwide, justifying the move as part of what it called moral measures.
00:16Rather conservative regimes see the internet as a means of, you know, liberating women,
00:23which in their books is a really bad thing.
00:28But then also they see it as people accessing all sorts of different information on the
00:33internet, which they would rather people not see.
00:36The shutdown included fiber optic lines, crippling vital sectors such as banking, customs, and
00:43even air travel.
00:44The impact is not limited to institutions.
00:47It has also hit individuals hard.
00:51A lot of people due to unemployment in Afghanistan, a lot of young people are using the internet
00:56to offer their services as freelancers to different clients around the world.
01:02This measure comes on top of other restrictions imposed by the Taliban since returning to power,
01:07including banning women's education, restricting their employment, and prohibiting certain professions
01:13the group considers inappropriate.
