Jake Browning on Cincinnati Bengals' Loss to Broncos on Monday Night Football
Transcript
00:00No, I mean, I think anytime you are struggling or doing well on offense,
00:04there's a lot that goes into it.
00:05And I think for me, my focus is my role in that, which is dropping back,
00:13making sure I'm making good decisions, and continue to move the ball forward.
00:20And so, yeah, there's a lot that goes into it.
00:24I'm focused on my role and trying to be the solution.
00:27My role in the solution being, finding a way to be more explosive,
00:32put up more points, sustain more drives, be better on third down.
00:36I mean, just play better on offense in general.
00:39Obviously, after last week's turnovers, this past week you were saying,
00:42how do you have a play for you and then kind of toward that line between aggressive
00:46and reckless play tonight, no turnovers for you personally.
00:49Do you think that there is maybe a part of your brain where,
00:52so that you weren't turning the ball over,
00:54maybe you weren't playing as aggressive?
00:57I mean, I don't think so.
00:58I don't really, I mean, off the top of my head,
01:00I think any game you're going to want some throws back.
01:04But I didn't walk away from the game thinking I just walked in there
01:08and tried to check the ball down every play.
01:10I mean, there's a lot of throws down the field.
01:14I mean, I thought as far as from a turnover perspective, like, yeah,
01:18we played clean, but we didn't move the ball, so who cares?
01:21I think that, for me, like, when you're struggling on offense and struggling to move the ball,
01:27it's fighting that urge to, you know, have those frustration throws where you're, like,
01:32trying to make something happen and the next thing you know it's interception.
01:35So, you know, that's kind of that line you have to toe.
01:42As far as I didn't feel like there was anything down the field just off of memory
01:48and looking at the pictures on the sideline, I didn't feel like there was anything down the field
01:52where it was like, ah, I should have thrown that, but I was too afraid of making a mistake.
01:56So I didn't, you know, I think for the most part, I mean, I hesitate to say I put the ball where it was supposed to go on each play
02:03because we didn't do anything on offense, but, I mean, for the most part, that was kind of the case.
02:09What are your thoughts on the play calling event?
02:12I mean, I don't think it's a play calling issue at all.
02:14I mean, I think everyone, when you have a poor performance on offense,
02:19there's so many different things that go into it.
02:22You know, for me, like, things that may not even stand out as, like, bad plays,
02:27but things where you're like, ah, you know, I need to have my eyes on this side because of this or whatever.
02:33And basically, when you play that poorly on offense for this two-game stretch,
02:37like, there's a lot.
02:39Everyone's playing a role in it, and everybody's got to play a role in the solution.
02:43And so that's kind of my focus.
02:45What was the season when you get starting to just over two games so long
02:48and how did you stop it in the stress?
02:52Get back to work and have a solution mindset and try and figure out, you know,
02:57what's our identity on offense?
02:59Like, what are we, what's, like, our go-to stuff that we're going to do?
03:04And how are we going to, you know, we got good players on the perimeter.
03:09How do we put them in situations where they can go make plays
03:13and do what they're capable of doing?
03:16And, you know, I think that's kind of my main focus.
03:19And I really just say the perimeter because that's kind of, you know,
03:23my area on offense is trying to get those guys the ball.
03:26You guys moved the ball early.
03:28I mean, I'm not going to sit up here and say one play.
03:39You know, I think there's a lot of different plays throughout the game
03:42that momentum swings and all that.
03:44But just overall, the whole performance on offense is very poor,
03:48and we left our defense out to dry a lot.
03:53And, you know, I'm going to sound like a broken record,
03:56but my focus for this week is just we're all part of the, you know,
04:01on offense we're all a part of the problem
04:03and we all need to be a part of the solution.
04:05And I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that I'm doing
04:09what I'm supposed to be doing to be a part of the solution.
04:11What's Jamar like after a couple games like this?
04:15You talked about being a leader, being more vocal,
04:18but what's your interaction with him right now?
04:21I mean, good.
04:23I think he's on the same page with me that, you know,
04:26just trying to figure out what's going to work,
04:30what's going to get us to where we need to be on offense.
04:33And so, yeah,
04:36I think that's kind of where the conversations have been geared around.
04:39Jake, after the game in Minnesota,
04:41it seemed like you guys really emphasized getting to play more sharp.
04:46The turnover is obviously not with the issues, right?
04:48The penalties, the penalties.
04:50What do you guys feel like you can do during the week
04:52to maybe sharpen the focus so it's not something different next week?
04:58Yeah, I mean, I think as far as penalties go, you know,
05:03I think my role as the quarterback is to make sure we're not taking delay games.
05:08We're not, you know, putting people in a situation
05:11where they're going to commit penalties.
05:14As far as overall on offense, you know,
05:15I think that that's more of a Zach question.
05:18For me, I'm just really focused on what I need to –
05:22what it is, trying to figure out what I need to do
05:24in order to help us move the ball and help us play better on offense.
05:28Jake, I hope you guys were with Tormor said
05:30if you thought the offense maybe didn't want it as much as if it could be tested.
05:33Did you feel like you all have that effort
05:36with the intensity of what you need to do tonight?
05:39Yeah, I didn't think – I didn't think effort was an issue.
05:44I think just the last two weeks just feels like we've never really had momentum.
05:51Haven't really been explosive.
05:53Haven't – we'll have, you know, one or two good plays
05:56and then we'll get into a first and 20.
06:00And that's just – you're fighting a hard battle with one arm behind your back
06:05when you end up in longer situations, second and long, first and long,
06:09leading to third and long.
06:11And, you know, it's not – good offenses don't do that.
06:16So we need to clean it up.
06:18And, yeah, I mean, I don't have – I don't think effort was an issue
06:24and I never questioned anybody's effort in the locker room.
06:26I don't really think that's how everything goes for the Bengals.
06:31But, you know, I do think it's a time when you've had two tough losses
06:36where you haven't performed well on offense.
06:38You do have to look in the mirror and say, okay, what is my role in this?
06:41And, you know, removing all the emotion and outside noise
06:45and just saying – looking at the film and saying, okay, what is my role in this?
06:49What do I need to do better?
06:51And for me, that's – like I said, you guys are tired of me hearing me say it,
06:56but that's going to be my focus this week.
