Cute rescue dog becomes pet detective

00:00Hi my name is Rachel and I'm the owner of Rico. Rico is a 10 year old rescue dog from Portugal

00:10where he was originally in a pound with only a couple of days left before he would have been put

00:14to sleep. So Rico is slowing down quite a bit now he's a little old man he's very grey in the face

00:19and he loves his sleep so he is the first to bed at night he will tell us at eight o'clock every

00:24night it's time for bed and he goes up and sleeps on my stepson's bed whether my stepson is there

00:29or not Rico is off to bed and he is quite lazy now but he's happy and he's loving his retired life.

00:34When Rico had started doing man trailing for a while we realised he was just naturally a very good

00:40trailing dog he does a mixture of ground scenting like tracking like a cartoon dog nose to the ground

00:45but he also was really good at air scenting so we gave him a go at what we call pet trailing going

00:50to look for missing dogs and we'd been doing the trailing just a couple of months when we were out

00:54on an actual training session and there was a lady who'd really lost her missing dog and one of the

01:00women I was with at the time dropped me in it and said isn't that what your dog does and I was kind of

01:05like well yes but he's not absolutely not ready to do this for real but we ended up giving it a go and

01:10remarkably Rico did find that dog so on his very first attempt he found Henry a missing dog over in

01:16Wales and from there he's just kind of carried on doing it he's worked through the canine school of

01:21trailing assessments up to expert level and he's been out and deployed to find other missing dogs

01:26since as well and amongst those he's also had a go at finding a missing capybara so when I first got

01:32Rico he was absolutely terrified of men if we saw a guy on a walk or if my dad came around he would cower

01:37he would hide behind me and he would have an accident and I was really trying as a dog trainer to

01:42think of different ways that we could help him to get over that and one of the things that I went to

01:46try with him was what we call man trailing so where he sniffs out a missing human and that really

01:52worked for Rico because every time he found a missing man he was given loads of hot dog sausages

01:56and he thought it was fantastic so he quite quickly learned to find humans and he started

02:01to like men and also children a lot more
