US citizen freed after nine months in Afghan prison, Qatari mediators say

The release came just weeks after US President Donald Trump's executive order on 5 September which imposed new "consequences on those who wrongfully detain Americans abroad."

00:00An American citizen held by the Taliban is finally heading home.
00:04Qatari mediators secured the release of Amir Amiri from Afghan prison,
00:09the fifth U.S. citizen to be freed this year.
00:12Amiri, seen here in blue, is believed to have been detained since December 2024,
00:17though the reason remains unclear.
00:19Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says its mediation efforts are aimed at finding
00:22peaceful solutions to conflicts and disputes worldwide.
00:26The release comes less than two weeks after Qatar helped free a British couple
00:30jailed for several months in Afghanistan.
00:33U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Amiri's release marks an important step forward,
00:38but added that several more Americans still remain unjustly detained in Afghanistan.
00:43He also thanked Qatari diplomats for what he calls their tireless efforts in securing Amiri's release.
