00:00In a world where magic was outlawed, a young boy named Kale discovered he had a gift.
00:06He could bring shadows to life with just a paintbrush.
00:09He found out by accident when he was drawing on the wall one day and his picture came to life.
00:15Whatever he painted on the wall became real.
00:18A bird he drew on the wall flapped its wings and flew away.
00:21A sword he drew on the wall slashed at the air, and a door he drew on the wall opened and closed.
00:28It led to another place, but only for a few seconds.
00:32It was a dangerous ability.
00:34If the city guard saw him, he would be taken away and experimented on.
00:39So Kale hid his gift and pretended he was just a normal kid who loved to draw.
00:44He lived in an orphanage run by a kind old woman.
00:48One day a new girl arrived.
00:50Her name was Hana.
00:52She was a street girl who had to steal to survive.
00:55She dreamed of escaping the city and its iron rules.
00:58One night, she saw Kale drawing in the moonlight, and she watched in amazement as his pictures came to life.
01:06The next day, she asked him to teach her how to do it.
01:09At first he refused, but then he agreed.
01:12He taught her how to control the shadows, how to make them strong, and how to make them fly.
01:17Together they started painting in the dark alleys of the city.
01:20They made secret paths for poor people to escape through.
01:23They made food and water appear for those who were hungry and thirsty.
01:28They even made weapons to defend those who were being attacked by the city guard.
01:32Their paintings couldn't stay for long.
01:34They would disappear after a few hours or when the sun came up.
01:38But in that short time, they helped so many people.
01:41News of their good deeds spread, and soon people were calling Kale and Hana the shadow painters.
01:47The city guard were getting closer to finding out who they were, but Kale and Hana didn't care.
01:53They were too busy helping people.
01:55They had a new plan.
01:56They were going to paint a shadow bridge that would lead everyone out of the city to freedom.
02:00It was their biggest painting yet.
02:03It took them weeks to finish.
02:05Every night they would sneak out into the alleys and paint a little bit more of the bridge.
02:10Finally, it was finished.
02:12The bridge stretched across the river, just like a real bridge.
02:17That night, Kale and Hana stood at the end of the bridge,
02:20watching as people walked through the painting and disappeared into the shadows.
02:25Suddenly, the ground shook and the walls rumbled.
02:28The city guard had found them.
02:31They ran as fast as they could, but the guard were almost on top of them.
02:35Kale felt a sharp pain in his leg.
02:38He had stepped on a trap.
02:39Hana helped him up, and they ran together into the nearest alley.
02:43There, they painted a swirling vortex that sucked in the light and swallowed the darkness.
02:49Then they stepped inside.
02:51When they came out, the guard were gone.
02:55They were in a different part of the city,
02:57a part where no one ever went.
03:00It was dark and scary, but Kale wasn't afraid.
03:04He took his brush and started painting.
03:06He painted a path through the darkness, a path that led to the light.
03:11People came running, following the path that he had painted.
03:14The city guard came after them, but they couldn't run forever.
03:18Soon, they would have to face the music.
03:20Kale knew what he had to do.
03:24He and Hana stood back to back facing the guards.
03:27Their brushes were raised, ready to fight.
03:31Behind them, the people they had helped stood in a circle protecting them.
03:35The city guard hesitated.
03:37They didn't want to hurt the people.
03:39But Kale wasn't afraid.
03:41He painted a shield for himself and Hana, and it glowed with magical light.
03:47The city guard were blinded by the light and confused by the magic.
03:52They didn't know what to do.
03:53In that moment, Kale and Hana knew they had won.
03:57The people they had helped believed in them.
04:00They would never give up.
04:02As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the land,
04:06Kale lifted his brush, dipped it in moonlight, and began to paint.
