00:00So listen, if you don't want your next barbecue party to end up at the emergency room,
00:05you might want to get rid of that wire brush you use to clean the grill.
00:09Over a hundred people have to seek medical help because of it every year.
00:13Those brass and steel bristles easily separate from the brush
00:16and stick to cooked food that ends up in your mouth.
00:20With each swallow, they go deeper and deeper.
00:22They can poke into or puncture the lining of your mouth, throat, and esophagus
00:27or somewhere else down your intestinal tract.
00:30The symptoms this causes could be signs of many different conditions.
00:34And because of their tiny size, the bristles are really tricky for doctors to spot.
00:39So you can lose the precious time to solve the problem at an early stage.
00:43In some cases, one ER visit can solve the problem.
00:46But if the bristle moves into deeper tissues, say into your neck, chest, or abdomen,
00:52well, it could start an infection.
00:54And you'd need some complex surgery to save your life.
00:58That was the case for a 63-year-old lady in Michigan.
01:01She was eating a hot dog grilled by her husband,
01:04and she felt something was wrong from the first bite.
01:07She could barely swallow the food because of an unusually painful sore throat
01:11and had to see the doctors for help.
01:14They sent her home after an inspection, but the symptoms only got worse and worse.
01:18A CT scan several months later showed the problem with some tiny metallic object
01:24that looked like a piece of hair at the back of her throat.
01:27The doctors were able to remove it during surgery.
01:32So, to play it safe, take good care of your wire grill brush and inspect it before putting food on it.
01:38If you see any loose or dangling wire bristles, get rid of them.
01:42If this sounds like too much work, just toss that brush all together.
01:46There are some safe alternatives to it, like wooden panels, pumice stone, nylon bristle brush, or liquid grill cleaner.
01:54You can also roll a piece of aluminum foil into a ball and use grill tongs to hold it while you're scrubbing your dirty grill grates.
02:01Cooking pros say an onion cut in half can also do the job.
02:05The caterpillar that arrived at your barbecue party as an uninvited guest might seem cute and harmless,
02:14but not all of them are safe to pick up and play with.
02:17There are several types of venomous caterpillars in the U.S. alone that can give you a hard time.
02:22Any brightly colored caterpillar that has a spine, bristles, or looks fuzzy could be venomous,
02:28and you're better off not touching it.
02:30Many caterpillars are equipped with hairs or spines, which are connected to poisonous glands.
02:37They often hide on the underside of the leaf, so you could easily miss it.
02:41So when you're doing some work in the garden, it's a good idea to wear gloves and clothes with long sleeves.
02:47Your skin will thank you for it.
02:49If you get stung by accident, use any sticky tape to remove the hair or spines,
02:54and then just wash the affected spot with soap and water.
02:57If you plan to go swimming or boating to cool down after the party,
03:04remember that algal blooms aren't just a freaky splash of color in the water, but a real problem.
03:10They are toxic and can cause a lot of trouble for you and your pets.
03:14The symptoms will be less than pleasant,
03:16and will involve you spending a great deal of time in the bathroom.
03:20Algae bloom means there are plenty of bacteria in the water,
03:23so don't swim in it and don't drink the water, no matter how thirsty you are after all the swimming.
03:29And if you happen to get some ingested water on your skin,
03:32take a long shower with clean water immediately.
03:36The media should report cases of dangerous algae blooms in your area,
03:40so make sure to check it before you hit the nearest lake.
03:45Wild parsnip might not appear in your summer nightmares,
03:48but this yellow-flowered plant can do some really mean things to your body.
03:52It contains a substance called soloran,
03:55and when you accidentally touch it and then enjoy a walk in the sun,
03:59the effect it will leave on your skin will be as nasty as the name sororan.
04:04And you could have dark red or brownish discoloration on your skin for months
04:08after your unwanted rendezvous with a plant.
04:11It's mostly active and mischievous between May and July, so watch out!
04:16All right, a garden hose must be completely safe as, unlike the grill brush,
04:24it doesn't have any small metallic parts, right?
04:27Well, when you leave it hanging out in direct sunlight,
04:30the water inside can heat up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
04:35If you spray someone with water this hot, their skin won't love it.
04:38It's especially dangerous for youngsters and pets.
04:42So, if you see someone blissfully unaware, grab the hose,
04:46take it from them by force if needed,
04:47and let the water run for a few moments before you let anyone play with the hose.
04:52It's for their own good.
04:53The intense sun can also heat up all the bad chemicals the hose itself contains,
04:58like lead and thylates.
05:00So, check what yours is made of and replace it with a safer version
05:03that's labeled lead-free or drinking water safe
05:07if you plan to use the water for drinking or playing.
05:10And if you already have a safe version but suddenly smell a terrible odor,
05:14it could be the algae and bacteria that just love stagnant water.
05:18If it comes into contact with your skin or you swallow it by accident,
05:23you could have some serious health problems.
05:26The best you can do is replace the hose.
05:28And yes, make sure you keep it in a cool shaded area and drain it well after every use.
05:36Now, you're never too old to love the trampolines.
05:39But the trampoline might not love you back and give you a spinal injury or broken bones.
05:44Almost 100,000 injuries like this with young users happen every year
05:49because they're so easy to fall from or land in the worst possible way during a somersault or a flip.
05:55The biggest risk of trampoline trouble is when more than one person is using this fun contraption.
06:02Nearly 75% of all accidents with trampolines happen when two jumping youngsters crash into one another.
06:10And no, some netting or padding really can't save the day.
06:14If you want to keep things safe, make sure there's always only one person at a time on the trampoline.
06:19You're going to need to install shock-absorbing pads that completely cover the trampoline's metal frame, springs, and hooks.
06:27If you see any signs of the padding getting too old, like tears and fraying, you need to replace it immediately.
06:34Make sure the trampoline stands on level ground and isn't too close to other structures and trees.
06:40A slide in your backyard, no matter if it's made of metal or plastic,
06:46can turn into a frying pan under the sun and can heat up to 189 degrees Fahrenheit.
06:53So, before you jump on it or let someone else do it, check the temperature of the whole thing top to bottom.
06:59And even when your little sister or someone else you love is begging you to go on a ride with them, don't do it.
07:06The slide is designed for one person of a certain size.
07:08When the two of you end up tandem sliding, the smaller leg can get caught up between the bigger leg and the edge of the slide.
07:16The speed will also increase, and it can lead to all sorts of drama.
07:21Finally, no matter how tempting it feels in the hot months,
07:25don't walk barefoot on that beautiful lawn in the park or even in your own garden.
07:30You never know what's hiding in the grass.
07:32And if you step on something sharp, like a rusty nail hiding in the grass, you'll get yourself into a lot of trouble.
07:40Flip-flops aren't the best idea for everyday summer shoes either.
07:43They rarely come with arch support and can make you take shorter steps and put more stress on your body.
07:49It's just not good for your feet, joints, and muscles.
07:52Otherwise, have a great summer!
08:00That's it for today.
