00:00It's your old pal, Mr. Robinson. So much has changed since we last spent some time together.
00:06Welcome to Ms. Mojo. And today, we're counting down our picks for the SNL sketches from seasons
00:1141 to 50 that had us laughing so hard, we couldn't resist hitting replay over and over again.
00:17What kind of horrible game show is this?
00:20It's What's That Name?
00:23Number 10. Career Day, Season 44.
00:26What is it about Adam Driver and career-based SNL sketches that never fail to kill?
00:31I have a newfound respect for what my employees do.
00:34Okay, now, can we rewire it, please, so I can go have my muffin? I haven't had a muffin yet, Matt.
00:40It's not as easy as I presume.
00:42Sometimes, literally. As unhinged as we imagine working for Kylo Ren might be,
00:47it's nothing compared to surviving a day with oil baron Abraham H. Parnassus.
00:52What does an oil baron do? The answer? Crush your enemies!
00:58Drain their bones into dirt! Make them regret they were ever born!
01:04Written by then-SNL newbie Eli Coyote Mandel in basically his first week,
01:08the sketch paints a hilariously bleak portrait of the oil baron's life.
01:12Some of that dialogue would make you wince if Driver didn't deliver it with such wild-eyed conviction.
01:17Oil is not for the weak. It is the Earth's milk, and only the strong may suckle at mother's teeth.
01:26Just when you think he can't spiral further, he whips out the bird.
01:29And now you return her to Earth! Naked and defeated!
01:35I am the dear angel pigeons! I crushed you into the ground!
01:41Then comes the absurd revenge plot twist.
01:43The whole thing is deranged genius, and Driver deserves every award imaginable.
01:49I married your granddaughter!
01:52Filled her belly with my festering seed!
01:55And sired a boy!
01:57She is my final revenge agent!
02:01Number 9. Washington's Dream, Season 49.
02:04From history buffs to Beavis and Butthead fans,
02:07Season 49 delivered a little something for everyone.
02:09I've heard rumblings that I look like someone from TV,
02:15but it's just...
02:17Maybe it's this Beavis person, I don't know.
02:20I don't watch much television. I have an incredibly busy life.
02:24Yeah, I'm very busy too.
02:26What's kind of nuts is that the Washington's Dream sketch was on shaky ground all week.
02:31Yes, I dream of that one day.
02:34Our proud nation will measure weights in pounds,
02:38and that 2,000 pounds shall be called a ton.
02:42And what will 1,000 pounds be called, sir?
02:45Nothing.
02:48Because we will have no word for that.
02:51However, host Nate Bargatze had as much faith in it as as Washington does in his vision for America's future.
02:56It turns out, all the sketch really needed was a live audience.
03:00One who could totally relate to the humor and Washington's devotion to weights and measures,
03:04while blissfully ignoring the more pressing issues he probably should be handling.
03:08The slaves, sir. What of them?
03:11You asked about the temperature.
03:13I did not.
03:14The concept is deceptively simple, yet brilliant.
03:17Reportedly crossing 4 million views in under two weeks.
03:20And even getting a sequel.
03:22The children will not have to go to school every day.
03:24We will have our own holidays.
03:274th of July Flag Day and President's Day.
03:30And what shall we do to honor our leaders on President's Day, sir?
03:35Buy a mattress, of course.
03:38Number 8.
03:39Haunted Elevator featuring David S. Pumpkins.
03:42First scene, season 42.
03:44Season 42 gave us some of our favorite sketches from this decade.
03:47From Wells for Boys to this Totino's commercial.
03:50Maria, I see Totino.
03:53And you?
03:53But you know when a sketch is so outlandish you don't even know why you're laughing?
04:01You just are.
04:02How's it hanging?
04:03I'm David Pumpkins.
04:06And I'm gonna scare the hell out of you.
04:09That's exactly how it felt when we first met David S. Pumpkins, who inexplicably features on this scary ride with two dancing skeletons.
04:30Inspired by the viral Little Star video and, of course, Tower of Terror, the sketch was written in the wee hours with almost no sleep.
04:37Who are you?
04:38Apparently, Hanks didn't want to do it at first.
04:52Little did he know it would become a sensation, SNL staple, and spawn a Halloween special.
04:57Any questions?
04:59Any questions?
05:03Number 7.
05:05Rap Roundtable.
05:06Season 46.
05:07This season served up some unforgettable sketches.
05:10But which pops into your head first?
05:12Bowen Yang's phenomenal characterization of the iceberg that sank the Titanic?
05:16And before I turn around and go, like, what, half my ass is gone, which was my best feature.
05:26The December to Remember commercial?
05:28Or, like us, Rap Roundtable?
05:30When she skirt her on you, you just gotta yeet on her.
05:33Yeah, yeah, like yeet yeet.
05:37That's hip-hop.
05:38Oh, God, that's hip-hop.
05:39Oh, God.
05:40Who's at that table?
05:41Queen Latifah?
05:42Obviously.
05:43Questlove?
05:44Naturally.
05:44Two confident white boys?
05:47Yes?
05:47Well, they're there, even if we have no idea what they're saying.
05:51Pete Davidson and Timothee Chalamet throw themselves into the roles so fully that they totally earned
05:56their spot in the conversation.
05:57The sketch brilliantly riffs on social media shaping art.
06:01And it's unexpectedly hilarious.
06:03Hey!
06:04Hey!
06:05You never loved me, Mom!
06:09But I needed you, whoa, yeah!
06:13Oh, no!
06:14No!
06:15Smoke Cheddar the ass-getter returned for round two.
06:18But honestly, nothing tops the chaos, brilliance, and pure fun of their debut.
06:23You don't need to be sorry.
06:24It's okay.
06:25It's what we all wanted to do.
06:27Let's take a break.
06:28Are you guys all right?
06:30Hey, Dad, can you come get us?
06:32Everyone here is super mean.
06:33Pedro Pascal quickly became a beloved host with iconic sketches like Waking Up and Protective Mom.
06:44He's also at the table for the now iconic Lisa from Temecula.
06:58It's a birthday dinner, and Shayna brings her sister Lisa, whose extra, extra well-done steak
07:04would make most chefs rage quit.
07:06But it's also extra, extra hilarious.
07:08I didn't tell you guys, but a few nights back, this dog followed me home.
07:15I'm about to tear this thing up.
07:16Lisa's just here to have a good time, and even her frantic sawing that practically creates
07:21a mini earthquake at the table won't stop her.
07:23And Ego Wodum plays that to perfection.
07:26Apparently, even her full-out table-read performance had everyone in stitches, and that energy translates
07:45on screen.
07:46No wonder it's become one of SNL's funniest modern classics.
07:49She's the only sister I've got.
07:51Bitch, we the youngest of six girls.
07:52Okay, okay, but at the end of the day, no matter what of the flaws, she's my family.
07:58And there better not be a damn red speck on that damn plate.
08:02Cook mommy.
08:03Number 5.
08:04John Mulaney's SNL Musicals.
08:06Various.
08:07Considering Diner Lobster kicked off the whole Mulaney musical run, it's almost unbelievable
08:11it took this long to get greenlit.
08:13In that time, there's been no one to order any crustaceans.
08:19Mulaney and Colin Jost reportedly wrote it while Mulaney was still a writer on the show,
08:25but it wasn't until he returned as host in season 43 that he finally got it on the air.
08:31Who knew a lobster-fueled Les Mis was exactly what SNL had been missing all these years?
08:36When the churning in your mouth matches the burning of its shell, you'll know why
08:41lobsters in the diner never stand.
08:46The response was electric.
08:47From then on, every time he hosted, he continued to outdo himself.
08:51From Bodega Bathroom to New York Musical to Subway Churro to Airport Sushi.
08:56Day is about to take on.
09:00That is a lie.
09:04Sure it will start to taxi.
09:08But then it comes back.
09:11Then, just when we thought he couldn't top those, he hit us with arguably the biggest showstopper
09:16of all for SNL's 50th.
09:18One more dawn, one more day, one day more.
09:32Number 4.
09:34Papyrus, season 43.
09:36Sometimes SNL's biggest successes come from the most unexpected places, like this sketch.
09:41I forgot about it for years, but then I remembered that Avatar, the giant international blockbuster,
09:48used the Papyrus font as its logo.
09:51Ryan Gosling plays Steven, who's tormented by the chosen font for the Avatar movie title.
09:56What makes it so brilliant isn't just the absurd premise, but how sincerely Gosling sells it.
10:02Maybe that was a starting point, but they clearly modified this.
10:04But whatever they did, it wasn't enough!
10:08We've all been there.
10:09One tiny, seemingly insignificant detail that lodges in your brain and keeps you up at night,
10:14even though no one else seems to care.
10:16James Cameron even voiced surprise at how they'd milked this one teeny detail to, quote,
10:21hilarious results.
10:22Do you remember the Avatar logo?
10:25Uh, yeah.
10:26It was tribal, yet futuristic.
10:29Papyrus!
10:30Oh, sure.
10:36You know what you did?
10:38I know what you did!
10:43And we've chosen to believe that the film's graphics team had their say on the matter
10:46when they revealed the title artwork for the sequel.
10:49He just put it in bold.
10:53He just put it in bold.
10:57All the money in the world, and he just put it in bold.
11:02It's him.
11:04It's the same designer.
11:05He just put it in bold.
11:08Oh, damn it!
11:10It took him seconds.
11:12A minute tops.
11:14Number 3.
11:15Bridesmaid Speech, Season 50.
11:17Ariana Grande is so funny that in another life, we're sure she could have been a repertory
11:22player.
11:22She also proved she understood the assignment in the now viral Bridesmaid Speech sketch,
11:27reportedly inspired by a real speech the writer stumbled upon online.
11:31Third location, fully straight, fully touching Domingo.
11:35I can't wait to be his wife.
11:38She's pointing to Domingo.
11:40At first, they nearly scrapped it, like several other sketches we've mentioned.
11:44But Grande pushed for it.
11:46And what a call that was.
11:47To say it blew up would be a massive understatement.
11:50She says I'm just so tired.
11:52We say take a nap.
11:55She says I'm not that kind of tired.
11:57Much like Kelsey, the world instantly fell for Domingo and their antics, hilariously narrated
12:02by the Kel Squad.
12:04A man came out this way, had to explain, direct from Domingo.
12:09Kelsey's a friend, she's like my sis, but we did hook up though.
12:13Other hosts wanted in on that magic, and Domingo even wandered out of Studio 8-H.
12:19Don't worry though, he made it back for the 50th anniversary episode.
12:22Came out this way, had to explain, direct from Domingo.
12:27Word to the wise that you got alive.
12:29Hide them from the tree bro.
12:33Number 2.
12:34Close Encounters.
12:36First scene, season 41.
12:38Season 41 was already in its stride when Close Encounters landed.
12:41By the time Meet Your Second Wife came along, the bar for brilliance was well in place.
12:46What's gonna happen is, Stacy will apply for an internship at your company, which she will
12:52hear about from a college roommate who is also, you guessed it, your daughter.
12:56By now, we were used to Kate McKinnon's penchant for weird and wacky characters.
13:01Meanwhile, I'm starting phase two, which is me sitting on a stool while 40 gray aliens
13:07take turns gently batting my knockers in.
13:12Did y'all get the knocker stuff?
13:15No, no knocker stuff, sorry.
13:17Still, with Miss Colleen Rafferty, it felt like her personal mission was breaking every
13:22single castmate, especially Ryan Gosling.
13:25Word is he was already giggling during rehearsals, and thankfully he couldn't hold it together
13:29live.
13:30Who could blame him?
13:31So I had to just chill up there with my damn coot-coot and prune shoe hand until the place
13:37opened up.
13:46Then you got screwed.
13:49Colleen's alien abduction stories are just unhinged.
13:52Naturally, this sketch became much more than a one-off, thanks to McKinnon throwing herself
13:56into every detail, and her determination to make everyone laugh.
14:00No crumbs left.
14:02And I was like, hey, last guy who did that got double-barreled pink eye.
14:13Thanks, Todd, you can sit down.
14:15Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
14:19Porn teacher, season 41.
14:22Still one of SNL's most viewed sketches on YouTube.
14:25Miss Dayworth, I wasn't all the way gone yet, and I heard you mention an oral exam.
14:34What?
14:35Like, is that for everyone?
14:37I'm just Pete, season 49.
14:39Did a Barbie sequel just write itself?
14:41I'm just Pete, anyone else I'd be a three.
14:47But I guess I'm hot for dudes in comedy.
14:51Hot Ones with Beyoncé, season 46.
14:54The Hot Ones episode we all truly want to see.
14:56It is truly an honor.
14:59I know.
15:01Hey, I cannot believe you're on Hot Ones.
15:04Now I feel you.
15:05I still can't tell if this is beneath me.
15:07Please Don't Destroy, Three Sad Virgins, featuring Taylor Swift.
15:11Season 47.
15:13The Lonely Island walked so these three sad virgins could run.
15:24The Actress, season 44.
15:27Hey, no role isn't worth going method for.
15:30Apparently.
15:30Two pairs of loose sweatpants, a single UGG boot, a couple of batteries, and some happy
15:362017 glasses.
15:38Who are you, Deirdre?

15:55Number one, Black Jeopardy with Tom Hanks, season 42.
16:01SNL has always had an interesting approach to politics, sometimes tackling it head on,
16:05other times weaving it into classic sketch formats.
16:08Before we get into that, though, we have to shout out Chadwick Boseman's brilliant turn
16:12on Black Jeopardy.
16:13I sense that this white woman does not season her food.
16:16That's right.
16:20And if she does, it is only with a tiny bit of salt.
16:25That's exactly right.
16:25And no paprika.
16:26Still, our pick here is the Tom Hanks segment.
16:29Oh, Doug again.
16:30What is, come on, they already decided who wins the report happens.
16:33Yes!
16:35Yes!
16:37Yes!
16:38At a time when America couldn't feel more divided, SNL found a way to highlight small
16:43glimmers of reaching across the aisle.
16:45Hanks plays a mega-supporter who sticks out like a sore thumb at first, but soon discovers
16:49surprising common ground with the other contestants.
16:52Doug!
16:53Well, what is, you better go to that dude in my neighborhood and fix anything for $40.
16:56Why, wait, you know Cecil?
16:58Yeah, but my Cecil's name is Jim, and it fixed my refrigerator, my air conditioner, and
17:02my cat.
17:02It felt like SNL read the room and responded with something timely, thoughtful, and hilarious.
17:08Naturally, Doug returned for their 50th.
17:10You're welcome to Black Jeopardy anytime.
17:12Oh, well, all right.
17:13Well, thank you, my brother.
17:15You know, maybe I'll start a show for you to come on, and we'll call it What Jeopardy?
17:21We don't need it.
17:22What's been your favorite SNL moment from the last five decades?
17:25Let us know in the comments.
