00:11Uhh...
00:12Houses that go bump in the night.
00:19Creepy quarters.
00:20Devilish domiciles.
00:22And, of course, me.
00:24Again.
00:26I'm done with the attic!
00:29It's the most frightful time of the year,
00:30and I'm traveling across the country
00:32in search of the 15 scariest homes we could find.
00:35Oh, my God.
00:37Whether they're petrifyingly paranormal.
00:40Are you a witch?
00:41Maybe.
00:42Or horrifically hideous.
00:44This channel is where they would pump the blood and wash it out.
00:49Sure, sure, sure, you can cover it.
00:50These are houses that will come back to haunt me in my dreams.
00:54I hang the people here.
00:55As if I'm ever going to be able to sleep again.
00:59Do you go down there?
01:00Do you want to go down there?
01:01No, I do not. No, no, no, no.
01:02We've already seen the eeriest in the eerie east.
01:05I guess we're going into the jail, Max.
01:08I thought I was inhaling tetanus.
01:12Haunted heartland, here I come.
01:18America's heartland may seem like it's all quaint towns
01:22and serene farmlands.
01:25But there are homes here scary enough to send shivers down your spine.
01:32And my first stop is in St. Louis, Missouri.
01:36This city is where the real-life exorcism that inspired The Exorcist
01:44allegedly took place.
01:49So, the bar is high.
01:51I'm here to meet Jane and Kyle.
01:54And I'm just going to say that if anyone's head spins around today,
01:57this is the last episode of this show that I am doing.
01:59And here it is.
02:05Oh, boy.
02:09It ain't new.
02:11I'll tell you that.
02:17Hi, Retta.
02:19Jane.
02:20Yes.
02:20Kyle.
02:21Yes, how you doing?
02:22I have a question.
02:23Yes.
02:24Why does that look like it's slipping?
02:27Yeah.
02:27A pear tree actually fell down and did some damage.
02:31So, it's fine.
02:32Who said it's fine?
02:35I'm Jane.
02:35This is my husband, Kyle.
02:36And we live in St. Louis, Missouri, in the haunted Bissell Mansion.
02:40It's the oldest brick home in St. Louis City.
02:43We both love history, so I was like, we have to buy it.
02:47Captain Louis Bissell fought in the War of 1812,
02:50and after the war, he built this mansion.
02:54So many people have died here.
02:56There have been apparitions.
02:58I feel like I'm being followed sometimes, like I'm being watched.
03:03It's a lot of history there.
03:05I know people that have been contacted by the spirits.
03:09They've seen two female silhouettes in the window.
03:12My extended family think we're a little nuts for buying a haunted place that needs so much work.
03:19I'm okay with it being haunted.
03:21I want to put a nursery in here.
03:23Yeah.
03:27You know, I'm scared.
03:29All right.
03:32This is a big house.
03:34We recently bought the house, but we have to do some repairs before we move in.
03:38You think?
03:39That pole outside, my friend.
03:41Probably the first thing we're going to repair.
03:44Yeah.
03:45Yeah, let's just go this way.
03:49Wow, this is an old room.
03:52Restaurant and dinner theater.
03:54So this home was a murder mystery dinner theater.
03:57Oh, okay.
03:58But Captain Louis Bissell, the one that built this home,
04:01died in one of these rooms in 1868.
04:05Oh boy, this is where it starts to get scary.
04:07Within the home, there's exactly 10 people that died.
04:11That's been recorded.
04:12There was actually one murder on the property.
04:15What the f***?
04:15What's going on in here?
04:17When it comes to buying a house, I limit the death toll to zero.
04:24So is it supposed to be haunted?
04:26Since we've owned it, we will turn the lights off, come back, and the lights will be on.
04:31Well, the door to the attic, it would just open on its own.
04:35I'm just trying to see my heart rate.
04:37I can feel it going on.
04:38Okay.
04:39Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool.
04:41Where to next?
04:43This way.
04:48Okay.
04:49The gentleman that sold us the home, apparently, this door locked behind him.
04:54It doesn't have a lock, but something trapped him in the room.
04:58What is that room?
04:59That is the kitchen.
05:01He was trapped in the kitchen with the food.
05:05Yeah.
05:06If he had to pee, he could pee in the sink.
05:09I don't know what's going on.
05:14Are we going into that kitchen?
05:15Yeah, would you like to check it out?
05:17Well, no, no, but that's what the show is.
05:27Oh, okay.
05:28It's not the room you want to be trapped in.
05:32What's that space?
05:33That's where the dumb waiter is.
05:35We've never actually opened it.
05:37And we are not opening it today.
05:38No, we're not going to open it.
05:40Do you want to go down to the basement?
05:41I don't, but I will.
05:44Get me out of this kitchen.
05:48Oh, boy.
05:49Oh, God.
05:52I need the handle, but it's dusty.
05:55Oh, my God.
05:56It's so cold.
05:57I know.
05:57It's so cold.
06:01Jane, what is going on?
06:03I know.
06:04They are rough.
06:07Oh, God.
06:08We need a flashlight.
06:09So, I guess you could just head straight.
06:11You guys, I don't like that.
06:13Okay.
06:14So, what's the story back here?
06:15You see how it's kind of bricked up?
06:17Yeah.
06:17So, that's where the cave entrance is?
06:20The what?
06:20The cave.
06:21There's a cave somewhere?
06:22There's a cave entrance.
06:24We're not sure what's down there, but we know it used to lead to the Mississippi River.
06:29You're telling me there is a tunnel from this house to God knows where?
06:36Because, again, we can't see it.
06:40Can we get out of here?
06:42Yes.
06:42Let's leave.
06:49So, this goes to the attic?
06:50Yes.
06:52When we leave, we turn the lights off, and we come back, and the lights will be on in the attic and in the basement.
06:57And sometimes this door will be open.
07:00Yeah, we're not going up there.
07:03So, I just want to show you my favorite room.
07:05Okay.
07:07Favorite room?
07:08Yes.
07:09This room gives me really good vibes.
07:11Well, it's a good light.
07:12There's actually a ghost story.
07:14In this window right here, the restaurant staff, they would see who they believe is Captain Lewis Bissell looking out the window.
07:21Way to ruin it, Kyle.
07:23So, you are one of three semifinalists in the haunted heartland.
07:31If you move to the finals, you'll be that much closer to getting a renovation by Allison Vittoria.
07:37It's perfection.
07:39So, I wish you luck.
07:41I'm out.
07:42That was the cave captain's crumbling murder mystery mansion.
07:49It's a mouthful, but did you see it?
07:51Appearance-wise, it is a big, old building.
07:57Everything looks old.
07:59Livable?
08:00It's unlivable.
08:02I don't want to be anywhere that has a mysterious cave in the basement.
08:05And who can live with a kitchen like that?
08:08Who?
08:09The Fright Factor.
08:12Ten deaths in one building?
08:14It's creeping me out.
08:16Next on my tour of the haunted heartland, I'm going to see if the Sunflower State can grow some scares.
08:23I'm on my way to Hartford, Kansas.
08:28There's nothing here.
08:31Oh, God.
08:33This is crazy.
08:35Not far from here is Rocky Ford Bridge, where, legend has it, a preacher and his mistress pushed his wife's car into the river.
08:46They say if you're there at night, you can still hear the screams.
08:51I'm here to meet Jenny and Jason, who think their house tops them all.
08:57Why do they have this particular fencing?
09:07I'm not excited.
09:20Is this the way to get in?
09:22I feel like it's not.
09:24Oh.
09:25Hi.
09:26Hey, Rita.
09:27Am I allowed to touch this electric fence?
09:29Oh, did I shut off the park?
09:31I sure hope so.
09:33I'm Jenny.
09:34Jenny.
09:34Mm-hmm.
09:35How are you?
09:36Nice to meet you.
09:36Hi, Jason.
09:36Jason, how are you?
09:37Nice to meet you.
09:38Hi.
09:38What do you think?
09:39I am anxiety-ridden.
09:43Why do you have fencing?
09:44What are we keeping out?
09:46Maybe deer.
09:47Maybe deer.
09:48Maybe zombies.
09:49Maybe zombies.
09:51Okay.
09:52My name is Jason, and this is Jenny, and we are on the outskirts of Hartford, Kansas,
09:57at our ramshackle compound.
09:59The previous owner was an off-grid individual.
10:02And he built this home himself.
10:04There are so many unique features.
10:06There are animal bones mortared into its foundation.
10:10There is no running water.
10:12There is no sewer.
10:13It's a little intimidating, I guess you could say.
10:16I'm not scared out here.
10:19What was that?
10:20It's a hummingbird.
10:22Oh, cool.
10:24So we're going to head in.
10:29Am I seeing bones?
10:31What's going on?
10:32You are seeing bones.
10:35You guys.
10:37Go ahead and open the store.
10:39This is not a home.
10:42What is this?
10:43We've kind of pieced together this might have been an animal dismembering area,
10:47because the guy who lived here before was a big-time hunter.
10:50You're not planning on living here?
10:52Very.
10:54Really?
10:55Yeah.
10:55Doing a lot of work to it.
10:56Yeah.
10:58Oh, we're going even further back.
11:02Ah!
11:02So many antlers.
11:04What was being grown in here?
11:06All sorts of vegetables.
11:07You may want to watch your head.
11:09The last time we were in here, there was a snake.
11:11Oh, no.
11:14He takes care of the rat problem.
11:18Let me tell you something.
11:20If we see it, just know that's why I left.
11:23Without saying a word.
11:25So the next room is this way.
11:27Mm-hmm.
11:27Straight ahead.
11:28Ah!
11:29This the bathroom?
11:30This is our septic system.
11:39Using that term real freely.
11:42System.
11:43Okay.
11:45This is the kitchen.
11:47This is where we make our meals.
11:48There's too much to say here.
11:51I know.
11:51First of all, there's not a lot of room.
11:54You guys!
11:55How is this life?
11:58All right.
11:58Let's make our way into here.
12:00It's the living room.
12:02We went from the death room to the living room.
12:08Oh, yeah.
12:09Let's stick a skull in there.
12:10I see the bones already.
12:12What's that?
12:13It's a deer jaw.
12:15What were all of these?
12:17Oh, my God.
12:19That was all turkey beards.
12:21The gobble-gobble?
12:23The gobble-gobble.
12:25You know, they're, like, just dried out.
12:29Hairy bags.
12:30I'm going to thank the snake for not coming out.
12:35And I'm going to wish you good luck.
12:37We appreciate your bravery.
12:38Okay, I'm going to take my way out without getting bitten by a snake.
12:41So I just left the wildlife mausoleum.
12:46For appearance, we have bones of dead animals,
12:50random decor made out of dead animals,
12:53and cleaning stations for, guess what?
12:55Dead animals.
12:56This is not a home.
12:58This is a resting place.
12:59The space is not livable.
13:02As far as I'm concerned, if there's no plumbing, there's no bathroom.
13:07Fright factor?
13:08I don't know where that snake is.
13:10It's still in there.
13:12I'm actually scared.
13:16One last spooky house for me to see.
13:18So I'm headed to Liberty, Missouri,
13:20where there's no need to say,
13:22give me liberty or give me death,
13:24because apparently, you can just have both.
13:28Welcome to Liberty, Missouri,
13:29a town whose name sounds cheerful,
13:33but I've seen enough scary movies to know better.
13:37I'm here to meet Sarah.
13:38She thinks she has the scariest house in America.
13:44There's a sudden chill in the air.
13:55Hi.
13:56Hello.
13:57Hello.
13:58Yes, welcome to our haunted home.
14:01Did you see our phantom horse rider when he walked up?
14:04No.
14:07So Jesse James' family farm is a little bit north of here,
14:11and we are told that he used to ride his horses on our property
14:14and water them in the creek behind our house.
14:17Oh!
14:18Let's see what's inside.
14:20All right.
14:20Come on in.
14:21I'm Sarah.
14:22I live in Liberty, Missouri with my family,
14:30and I know I have the scariest house in America.
14:34The house was built in 1854.
14:36Me and my husband started getting a sense
14:38of other things going on in our house
14:40pretty soon after we moved in.
14:42We have seen multiple figures and apparitions.
14:46The lights can go on and off.
14:48We hear the piano playing by itself at night.
14:51I am very into scary movies, very into Halloween.
14:54So this is all right up our alley.
14:56Let's see what's inside.
14:58All right.
14:59Come on in.
15:01Oh, there's a little slant on the floor here.
15:03Yes, yes.
15:04The floor slants a little bit.
15:05Kind of got to watch out for it.
15:07Actually, when you walk in here,
15:09you sometimes will smell like an older woman's perfume.
15:12I smell like, like freesia, like a flower.
15:17Well, there are flowers behind you.
15:20Oh, okay.
15:21So those are probably the flowers you're smelling.
15:23I was like, this is real.
15:25That's the bellies.
15:28Where am I going to be going to next?
15:29We're going to step into the formal parlor area.
15:32The wallpaper.
15:35But this room does have some activity.
15:38We keep this piano closed
15:40because we do hear it playing by itself sometimes.
15:45Also, I guess you're not supposed to stack Bibles on each other.
15:49So when we moved in, I did.
15:51And I woke up the next morning
15:54and they were in the middle of the floor.
15:57There was a preacher that once lived in the house.
15:59Maybe that was his way of telling us, you know,
16:01we shouldn't be doing that.
16:03So we have Jesse James outside.
16:07Madam Freesia.
16:09And Father, don't stack.
16:11Three ghosts.
16:13I'm nervous about how many more.
16:15I'm going to have you go into the kitchen.
16:20More wallpaper.
16:21More wallpaper.
16:22For the kitchen.
16:24All right.
16:24Tell me about this room.
16:26I was FaceTiming my dad showing in the house.
16:28And I came in the kitchen.
16:30He kind of stopped for a second.
16:32And I was like, what?
16:33And he said,
16:34I saw a Confederate soldier walk behind you
16:37and go toward your basement steps.
16:41Ghost number four.
16:42The FaceTime Confederate.
16:43That also leads me to the basement.
16:51I'll get the flashlight here.
16:53Oh, boy.
16:53Yes, we need a flashlight.
16:59Do you go down there?
17:00Do you want to go down there?
17:01No, I do not.
17:02No, no, no, no.
17:03I've only been down there twice.
17:04Twice.
17:05Yeah.
17:05Six years.
17:06You see why.
17:08I didn't go down there,
17:09so I can't confirm if it's a kill room.
17:11But from what I saw,
17:13it's not a living room.
17:14We are going to head upstairs.
17:18Careful there.
17:19I feel like this floor is falling away from this wall.
17:23I feel like a little bit of vertigo.
17:24I know, yeah.
17:25It's a lot.
17:28This is our guest bedroom.
17:30Okay.
17:30When we were staying in here,
17:32I woke up in the middle of the night
17:33and actually saw a woman sitting on the bed.
17:37And it was just a quick moment.
17:39The only way I could describe it is like...
17:40I'm sorry.
17:41I need to stop for a second.
17:42Am I hearing screaming outside?
17:45You're probably hearing the rooster.
17:46It sounds like screaming.
17:50That's what I heard.
17:51It's huge.
17:55We're going to go into the bedroom
17:57on the right-hand side.
18:03I mean, it's sexy in here.
18:07The main bedroom has a sexy spook about it.
18:11It's not as freaky.
18:19I would wish you good luck.
18:21We appreciate you coming here
18:22and hopefully you'll smell her perfume on the way down.
18:25Maybe I'll just smell the flowers.
18:27She doesn't have to make an appearance.
18:30So that was Freisha Fright Night.
18:32Appearance-wise,
18:33they have a lot of wallpaper in there.
18:35It's like the ghosts were ripping the wallpaper off the wall.
18:38As far as unlivability,
18:40these floors,
18:42the fact that I get vertigo just standing,
18:45it's not livable for me.
18:46Fright factor.
18:47You lived in the house for six years.
18:49You've been in the basement twice.
18:51Hard pass.
18:52Haunted heartland.
18:54Get me out of here.
18:59And so,
18:59the only thing left for the heartland to haunt now
19:02is my dreams.
19:03And I depart with three very strong
19:05and terrifying contenders.
19:08But only one house
19:09will move on to the finals
19:10for a chance at a renovation
19:12by Allison Victoria.
19:15Haunted heartland,
19:17you gave me haunted heart palpitations
19:19with the amount of scary you had on display.
19:22Ah!
19:22Okay.
19:23Am I hearing screaming?
19:25It's between a former mystery dinner theater
19:27that's more like a horror show.
19:29Within the home,
19:30there's exactly ten people that died.
19:33What's going on in here?
19:35An off-the-grid home
19:37that makes no bones about how scary it is.
19:39You may want to watch your head.
19:41The last time we were in here,
19:42there was a snake.
19:43Oh!
19:44He takes care of the rat problem.
19:45And a wallpapered nightmare
19:49where the mysterious basement
19:51will remain a mystery.
19:53Do you go down there?
19:54Do you want to go down there?
19:55No, I do not.
19:56No.
19:57And while all three contenders
19:58were a seriously spooky sight,
20:01only one scary house can move on.
20:04Lives may change.
20:15Jane, Kyle,
20:17you are the scariest house
20:20in the haunted heartland.
20:22No way!
20:24Yes!
20:24That's a trick?
20:26Wow!
20:27So, you're one step closer.
20:30I can't really believe it.
20:31No words.
20:32Congratulations,
20:34Cave Captain's Crumbling Murder Mystery Mansion.
20:36Your death toll was high
20:38and your scary toll was even higher.
20:41The questions remain.
20:42Are you scary enough to take it all?
20:44Well, there's still more scary houses to see.
20:49Don't mess with me.
20:51I'm talking to your spirits.
20:53We're not going down there, are we?
20:54You guys are in the cemetery.
20:57Oh boy.
20:58Oh boy.
20:59Snakes.
21:00Boop!
21:01We out!
21:01We out!
