00:00Hello?
00:12Hello, Retta. Do you still like scary houses?
00:16Hell no, homie.
00:21Boop!
00:25Yikes.
00:27Nope.
00:30Retta?
00:34Retta?
00:38Retta?
00:40Oh, s***.
00:46Houses that go bump in the night.
00:48Creepy quarters.
00:50Devilish domiciles.
00:52And of course, me.
00:54Again.
00:56I'm done with the attic!
00:58It's the most frightful time of the year, and I'm traveling across the country in search of the 15 scariest homes we could find.
01:05Whether they're petrifyingly paranormal.
01:10Are you a witch?
01:11Maybe.
01:12Or horrifically hideous.
01:15This channel.
01:16This is where they would pump the blood and wash it out.
01:19Sure, sure, sure. You can cover it.
01:21These are houses that will come back to haunt me in my dreams.
01:24They hanged people here.
01:27As if I'm ever going to be able to sleep again.
01:29Do you go down there?
01:30Do you want to go down there?
01:31No, I do not.
01:32No, no, no, no.
01:33We've already seen the eeriest in the eerie east.
01:36I guess we're going into the jail next.
01:38I thought I was inhaling tetanus.
01:41Haunted heartland, here I come.
01:45America's heartland may seem like it's all quaint towns and serene farmlands, but there are homes here scary enough to send shivers down your spine.
02:00And my first stop is in St. Louis, Missouri.
02:07This city is where the real life exorcism that inspired the exorcist allegedly took place.
02:19So the bar is high.
02:21I'm here to meet Jane and Kyle.
02:23And I'm just going to say that if anyone's head spins around today, this is the last episode of this show that I am doing.
02:29And here it is.
02:35Ooh.
02:37Oh boy.
02:40It ain't new.
02:41I'll tell you that.
02:47Hi.
02:48Hi, Retta.
02:49Jane.
02:50Yes.
02:51Kyle.
02:52Yes, how you doing?
02:53I have a question.
02:54Yes?
02:55Why does that look like it's slipping?
02:57Yeah.
02:58A pear tree actually fell down and did some damage.
03:00Oh.
03:01So it's fine.
03:02He said it's fine.
03:05I'm Jane.
03:06This is my husband, Kyle.
03:07And we live in St. Louis, Missouri, in the haunted Bissell Mansion.
03:11It's the oldest brick home in St. Louis City.
03:14We both love history, so it's like we have to buy it.
03:17Captain Louis Bissell fought in the War of 1812.
03:20And after the war, he built this mansion.
03:24So many people have died here.
03:26There have been apparitions.
03:28I feel like I'm being followed sometimes, like I'm being watched.
03:31It's a lot of history there.
03:35I know people that have been contacted by the spirits.
03:39They've seen two female silhouettes in the window.
03:43My extended family think we're a little nuts for buying a haunted place that needs so much work.
03:49I'm okay with it being haunted. I want to put a nursery in here.
03:53Yeah.
03:54You know I'm scared.
03:59All right.
04:03This is a big house.
04:05We recently bought the house, but we have to do some repairs before we move in.
04:08You think?
04:10That pole outside.
04:11Start.
04:12Probably the first thing we're going to repair.
04:14Yeah.
04:16Yeah, let's just go this way.
04:19Wow, this is an old room.
04:21Restaurant and dinner theater.
04:25So this home was a murder mystery dinner theater.
04:28Oh, okay.
04:29But Captain Lewis Bissell, the one that built this home, died in one of these rooms in 1868.
04:35Oh boy, this is where it starts to get scary.
04:38Within the home, there's exactly 10 people that died.
04:41That's been recorded.
04:43There was actually one murder on the property.
04:46What the what's going on in here?
04:47When it comes to buying a house, I limit the death toll to zero.
04:54So is it supposed to be haunted?
04:56Since we've owned it, we will turn the lights off, come back, and the lights will be on.
05:02Well, the door to the attic, it would just open on its own.
05:06I'm just trying to see my heart rate. I can feel it going on.
05:09Okay.
05:10Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool.
05:12Where to next?
05:13This way.
05:14Okay.
05:19The gentleman that sold us the home, apparently, this door locked behind him.
05:25It doesn't have a lock, but something trapped him in the room.
05:28What is that room?
05:29That is the kitchen.
05:31He was trapped in the kitchen?
05:33With the food?
05:35Yeah.
05:36If he had to pee, he could pee in the sink.
05:37Uh-oh, what's going on?
05:43Are we going into that kitchen?
05:45Yeah, would you like to check it out?
05:47Well, no, no, but that's what the show is.
05:51Oh, okay.
05:52This is not the room you want to be trapped in.
06:02What's that space?
06:04That's where the dumb waiter is.
06:06We've never actually opened it.
06:08And we are not opening it today.
06:09No, we're not going to open it.
06:11Do you want to go down to the basement?
06:12I don't.
06:13But I will.
06:15Get me out of this kitchen.
06:19Oh, boy.
06:21Oh, God.
06:23I need the handle, but it's dusty.
06:26Oh, my God.
06:27It's so cold down here.
06:28I know, it's so cold.
06:31Jane, what is going on in there?
06:34I know.
06:37Oh, God.
06:38We need a flashlight.
06:39So I guess you could just head straight.
06:41You guys, I don't like you.
06:43Oh, okay.
06:44So what's the story back here?
06:46You see how it's kind of bricked up?
06:47Yeah.
06:48So that's where the cave entrance is?
06:50The what?
06:51The cave.
06:52There's a cave somewhere?
06:53There's a cave entrance.
06:55We're not sure what's down there,
06:56but we know it used to lead to the Mississippi River.
07:00You're telling me there is a tunnel
07:03from this house to God knows where?
07:06Because, again, we can't see it.
07:10Can we get out of here?
07:12Yeah, let's leave.
07:19So this goes to the attic?
07:20Yes.
07:22When we leave, we turn the lights off,
07:24and we come back,
07:25and the lights will be on in the attic
07:27and in the basement.
07:28And sometimes this door will be open.
07:30Yeah, we're not going up there.
07:33So I just want to show you my favorite room.
07:35Okay.
07:38Favorite room?
07:39Yes.
07:40This room gives me really good vibes.
07:41Well, it's a good light.
07:42There's actually a ghost story.
07:45In this window right here,
07:46the restaurant staff,
07:47they would see who they believe is Captain Lewis Bissell
07:50looking out the window.
07:52Way to ruin it, Kyle.
07:53So you are one of three semifinalists
07:58in the haunted heartland.
08:00If you move to the finals,
08:02you'll be that much closer to getting a renovation
08:05by Alice and Victoria.
08:06It's perfection.
08:07So I wish you luck.
08:11I'm out.
08:13That was the cave captain's crumbling murder mystery mansion.
08:19It's a mouthful, but did you see it?
08:21Appearance wise, it is a big, old building.
08:26Everything looks old.
08:29Livable?
08:30It's unlivable.
08:31I don't want to be anywhere that has a mysterious cave
08:34in the basement.
08:36And who can live with a kitchen like that?
08:38Who?
08:39The Fright Factor.
08:41Ten deaths in one building?
08:44It's creeping me out.
08:46Next on my tour of the haunted heartland,
08:49I'm going to see if the sunflower state
08:51can grow some scares.
08:53I'm on my way to Hartford, Kansas.
08:56There's nothing here.
09:01Oh, God.
09:03This is crazy.
09:05Not far from here is Rocky Ford Bridge,
09:09where legend has it a preacher and his mistress
09:13pushed his wife's car into the river.
09:15They say if you're there at night,
09:17you can still hear the screams.
09:19I'm here to meet Jenny and Jason,
09:24who think their house tops them all.
09:35Why do they have this particular fencing?
09:38I'm not excited.
09:50Is this the way to get in?
09:52I feel like it's not.
09:54Oh.
09:55Hi, Reda.
09:56Hey, Reda.
09:57Am I allowed to touch this electric fence?
09:59Oh, did I shut off the power?
10:01I sure hope so.
10:03I'm Jenny.
10:04Jenny, how are you?
10:05Nice to meet you.
10:06Hi, Jason.
10:07How are you?
10:08Nice to meet you.
10:09What do you think?
10:10I am anxiety-ridden.
10:13Why do you have fencing?
10:15What are we keeping out?
10:16Maybe deer.
10:17Maybe deer.
10:18Maybe zombies.
10:19Maybe zombies.
10:20Okay.
10:22My name is Jason, and this is Jenny,
10:24and we are on the outskirts of Hartford, Kansas,
10:27at our ramshackle compound.
10:29The previous owner was an off-grid individual.
10:32And he built this home himself.
10:34There are so many unique features.
10:36There are animal bones mortared into its foundation.
10:40There is no running water.
10:42There's no sewer.
10:43It's a little intimidating, I guess you could say.
10:46I'm not scared out here.
10:49What was that?
10:50It's a hummingbird.
10:52Oh, cool.
10:53So we're going to head in.
10:59Am I seeing bones?
11:01What's going on?
11:02You are seeing bones.
11:05You guys.
11:06Go ahead and open this door.
11:08This is not a home.
11:10What is this?
11:11We've kind of pieced together this might have been an animal dismembering area,
11:17because the guy who lived here before was a big-time hunter.
11:20You're not planning on living here?
11:22Very.
11:23Eventually.
11:24Really?
11:25Yeah.
11:26Doing a lot of work to it.
11:27Yeah.
11:28Oh, we're going even further back.
11:30Oh, so many antlers.
11:34What was being grown in here?
11:36All sorts of vegetables.
11:37You may want to watch your head.
11:39The last time we were in here, there was a snake.
11:41Oh, no.
11:44He takes care of the rat problem.
11:49Let me tell you something.
11:50If we see it, just know that's why I left, without saying a word.
11:55So, next room is this way.
11:57Mm-hmm.
11:58Straight ahead.
11:59Oh!
12:00This is the bathroom.
12:06This is our septic system.
12:10Using that term real freely.
12:12System.
12:14Okay.
12:15This is the kitchen.
12:17This is where we make our meals.
12:19There's too much to say here.
12:21I know.
12:22First of all, there's not a lot of room.
12:24You guys!
12:26How is this life?
12:28All right.
12:29Let's make our way into here.
12:31To the living room.
12:33We went from the death room to the living room.
12:38Oh, yeah.
12:39Let's stick a skull in there.
12:41I see the bones already.
12:43What's that?
12:44It's a deer jaw.
12:46What were all of these?
12:48Oh, my God.
12:49That was all turkey beards.
12:52The gobble gobble?
12:53The gobble gobble.
12:56You know, they're like just dried out hairy bags.
13:02I'm going to thank the snake for not coming out.
13:05And I'm going to wish you good luck.
13:07We appreciate your bravery.
13:08Okay, I'm going to make my way out without getting bitten by a snake.
13:14So I just left the wildlife mausoleum.
13:17For appearance, we have bones of dead animals, random decor made out of dead animals, and cleaning stations for guess what? Dead animals.
13:26This is not a home.
13:28This is a resting place.
13:30The space is not livable.
13:33As far as I'm concerned, if there's no plumbing, there's no bathroom.
13:37Fright factor?
13:38I don't know where that snake is.
13:40It's still in there.
13:42I'm actually scared.
13:46One last spooky house for me to see.
13:49So I'm headed to Liberty, Missouri, where there's no need to say give me liberty or give me death because apparently you can just have both.
13:57Welcome to Liberty, Missouri, a town whose name sounds cheerful, but I've seen enough scary movies to know better.
14:07I'm here to meet Sarah.
14:09She thinks she has the scariest house in America.
14:14There's a sudden chill in the air.
14:16Hi.
14:26Hello.
14:28Sarah.
14:29Yes, welcome to our haunted home.
14:31Did you see our phantom horse rider when you walked up?
14:34No.
14:38So Jesse James' family farm is a little bit north of here.
14:41Mm-hmm.
14:42And we are told that he used to ride his horses on our property and water them in the creek behind our house.
14:47Oh!
14:49Let's see what's inside.
14:50All right.
14:51Come on in.
14:58I'm Sarah.
14:59I live in Liberty, Missouri with my family, and I know I have the scariest house in America.
15:04The house was built in 1854.
15:05Me and my husband started getting a sense of other things going on in our house pretty soon after we moved in.
15:13We have seen multiple figures and apparitions.
15:16Lights can go on and off.
15:18We hear the piano playing by itself at night.
15:21I am very into scary movies, very into Halloween.
15:24So this is all right up our alley.
15:27Let's see what's inside.
15:28All right.
15:29Come on in.
15:31Oh, there's a little slant on the floor here.
15:33Yes.
15:34Yes.
15:35The floor slants a little bit.
15:36Kind of got to watch out for it.
15:38Actually, when you walk in here, you sometimes will smell like an older woman's perfume.
15:43I smell like, like freesia.
15:46Like a flower.
15:48Well, there are flowers behind you.
15:50Oh, okay.
15:52Those are probably the flowers you're smelling.
15:54I was like, this is real.
15:56Because I smell it.
15:58Where am I going to be going to next?
16:00We're going to step into the formal parlor area.
16:03The wallpaper.
16:06But this room does have some activity.
16:09We keep this piano closed because we do hear it playing by itself sometimes.
16:15Also, I guess you're not supposed to stack Bibles on each other.
16:19Huh.
16:20So, when we moved in, I did.
16:22And, um, I woke up the next morning and they were in the middle of the floor.
16:27There was a preacher that once lived in the house.
16:29So, maybe that was his way of telling us, you know, we shouldn't be doing that.
16:33So, we have Jesse James outside.
16:37Madam Freesha.
16:39And Father, don't stack.
16:41Three ghosts.
16:42Three ghosts.
16:44I'm nervous about how many more.
16:45I'm going to have you go into the kitchen.
16:51More wallpaper.
16:52More wallpaper.
16:53For the kitchen.
16:54All right.
16:55Tell me about this room.
16:56I was FaceTiming my dad showing him the house and I came in the kitchen.
17:01He kind of stopped for a second and I was like, what?
17:03And he said, I saw a Confederate soldier walk behind you and go toward your basement steps.
17:11Ghost number four.
17:12The FaceTime Confederate.
17:16That also leads me to the basement.
17:21I'll get the flashlight here.
17:23Oh, boy.
17:24Yes, we need a flashlight.
17:29Do you go down there?
17:30Do you want to go down there?
17:31No, I do not.
17:32No, no, no, no, no.
17:33I've only been down there twice.
17:34Twice.
17:35Yes.
17:36In six years.
17:37You see why.
17:38I didn't go down there, so I can't confirm if it's a kill room.
17:41But from what I saw, it's not a living room.
17:47We are going to head upstairs.
17:48Careful there.
17:49I feel like this floor is falling away from this wall.
17:53I feel like a little bit of vertigo.
17:54I know, yeah.
17:55It's a lot.
17:58This is our guest bedroom.
18:00Okay.
18:01When we were staying in here, I woke up in the middle of the night and actually saw a woman
18:05sitting on the bed.
18:07Then it was just a quick moment.
18:09The only way I could describe it is like...
18:10I'm sorry.
18:11I need to stop for a second.
18:13Am I hearing screaming outside?
18:15You're probably hearing the rooster.
18:16It sounds like screaming.
18:20That's what I heard.
18:22It's huge.
18:24We're going to go into the bedroom on the right-hand side.
18:34I mean, it's sexy in here.
18:38The main bedroom has a sexy spook about it.
18:41It's not as creepy.
18:50I would wish you good luck.
18:52We appreciate you coming here and hopefully you'll smell her perfume on the way down.
18:55Maybe I'll just smell the flowers.
18:57She doesn't have to make an appearance.
19:00So that was Frisha Fright Night.
19:03Appearance-wise, they have a lot of wallpaper in there.
19:06Looks like the ghosts are ripping the wallpaper off the wall.
19:09As far as unlivability, these floors...
19:12The fact that I get vertigo just standing, it's not livable for me.
19:17Fright factor.
19:18You lived in the house for six years.
19:19You've been in the basement twice.
19:21Hard pass.
19:23Haunted heartland.
19:25Get me out of here.
19:28And so, the only thing left for the heartland to haunt now is my dreams.
19:33And I depart with three very strong and terrifying contenders.
19:38But only one house will move on to the finals for a chance at a renovation by Allison Victoria.
19:46Haunted Heartland, you gave me haunted heart palpitations with the amount of scary you had on display.
19:52Oh, okay.
19:53Am I hearing screaming?
19:55It's between a former mystery dinner theater that's more like a horror show.
20:00Within the home, there's exactly ten people that died.
20:03What's going on in here?
20:05An off-the-grid home that makes no bones about how scary it is.
20:10You may want to watch your head.
20:11The last time we were in here, there was a snake.
20:14Oh!
20:15He takes care of the rat problem.
20:17And a wallpapered nightmare where the mysterious basement will remain a mystery.
20:23Do you go down there?
20:25Do you want to go down there?
20:26No, I do not. No.
20:27And while all three contenders were a seriously spooky sight, only one scary house can move on.
20:34Lives may change.
20:36Jane, Kyle, you are the scariest house in the haunted heartland.
20:52No way!
20:53Yes!
20:54Is that the trick?
20:56Wow!
20:57So you're one step closer.
21:00I can't really believe it.
21:01I have no word.
21:03Congratulations, Cave Captain's Crumbling Murder Mystery Mansion.
21:07Your death toll was high and your scary toll was even higher.
21:10The questions remain.
21:12Are you scary enough to take it all?
21:14There's still more scary houses to see.
21:19Don't mess with me.
21:21I'm talking to your spirits.
21:23We're not going down there, are we?
21:25You guys are in the cemetery.
21:28Oh, boy. Oh, boy.
21:29Snakes.
21:31We out!
