Construction on a new 10-million-dollar tennis facility in Canberra’s north has begun five years after a funding pledge from the act government. The new Gungahlin tennis facility in Amaroo will feature 10 full-size courts, a hitting wall for practice, and a pavilion with change rooms, amenities, and a community space.

00:00Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios lending his star power to a different sort of grass event.
00:09Just to see more tennis courts being built in Canberra for me.
00:13I'm still here, I've travelled the world, played in all the best tournaments
00:16and somehow I still end up in Canberra, which I don't know why, but I just love it here.
00:20ACT Labor first recruited the Canberra-born athlete in September 2020
00:25to help promote its commitment to build a multi-million dollar gun garland tennis facility within three years if elected.
00:32Community concerns ranging from noise, light and flood risk to traffic, parking and court surface
00:39emerged during consultation in 2022 and pushed back the delivery date,
00:44with development applications only approved last year.
00:48But now, with $200,000 contributions each from Tennis ACT and Tennis Australia,
00:55construction of a ten-court facility with hotshot courts, a pavilion and car parking is finally underway.
01:02We've gotten through all the sort of due diligence
01:05and now we're at the point where we can, you know, start moving dirt around and build the facility.
01:11Though Mother Nature may prove a lasting challenge.
01:14What are we going to do about the wind? Because we know this park is notoriously quite windy.
01:18We'll have to adjust. We might get some tips off Nick.
01:21I think that just will provide some challenges and perhaps that winning edge for people who play here.
01:28Kyrgios's attention is on a winning edge in his Battle of the Sexes exhibition match in January
01:34against four-time Grand Slam champion, Irina Sabalenka.
01:39I did start here. We played in the wind too. We did. Like, you've got to start somewhere and it's a leveller.
01:44So like, you know, Sabalenka wants to play me out here, maybe she's got a chance, but anywhere else, I don't think so.
01:50Construction's expected to finish in September 2026.
01:54What we got quite a lot.
02:01In the morning of these things more venues-
02:05Like this, there was a side Kyrgios on TV speakers.
02:07I left делать together in September 2026,
02:10Tell me what we are doing here with the talk.
02:13There was a historic counter.
02:16Whatever coming out for me is there was a chance now for your act.
