01:19denis is the goal of vfx producer supervisors intelligent literate smart an ally of the
01:26filmmaker and there's nothing he cannot solve and i've never seen him lose his count
01:32et justement le voici denis thank you for having us collaboration with guillermo how many movies now
01:38about a 20-year collaboration i think the first one i did i was a technician on on mimic wow which was
01:4597 98 but in terms of our recent history we did crimson peak which was a lot of fun shape of
01:53water nightmare alley we did four seasons of the strain with him obviously and and and now
02:00frankenstein so it's been quite a journey and all this in all of it in toronto yeah the ecosystem is
02:08really developed we have all levels of government involved municipally provincially federally we're all
02:14rolling rowing in the same direct direction they really support the arts and the technology but most
02:19importantly it's about the human talent that's here over decades it's been developed and in my area of
02:24expertise with digital art artistry and visual effects in the technology i mean it's it's probably
02:32one of the best places in the world for me as a business owner to be in business
03:11des effets visuels it's not just about you know us blindly working behind a computer we really make
03:17a science of it we study it understand the physics work with the cinematographer to give us elements
03:22you know then start playing with the animation looking at reference reference reference and the
03:27idea is to try and get to a point where we haven't broken the audience's suspension of disbelief the moment
03:33you see the visual effects we failed we failed and that's and and something i've always said over
03:39years with my team my artists and when i'm on set i mean you're only judged by your worst work which
03:45which leads me to one thing you know i mean it's it's visual storytelling your visuals tell a story
03:51if we take the shape of water and we see you know this sequence where sally hawkins goes with her
03:56fingers you know on these little bubbles of water it tells a story and i don't see the effects
04:02it all starts with guillermo where you know he had a vision for it and the thing about working
04:09with guillermo is that a shot has to earn its way into the movie and the moment he says it's not going
04:15to work he'll cut it how do you find the balance between you know i would call you know mechanical
04:23effects and and digital effects you know and how it blends together in the guillermo philosophy of
04:30filmmaking we we do it in camera we get it practically and then we enhance we enhance we
04:35enhance and we take over reluctantly and also you know he's he's such a an inspiration also he's got
04:41great instincts for what's working what's not you know dennis the lighting's not working there let's
04:46fix that you know he's his notes are you know he's a craftsman he's a master at this medium and he comes
04:52some special effects and he comes absolutely the premiere of frankenstein you know you were in
05:01the public right i mean the audience was watching and everything honestly can you take a step back
05:06and watch the movie without seeing the special effects or no no no i can't i can't anymore i can't
05:12anymore you have to all i do is i see all the all all the mistakes but no no i mean we're really proud
05:17of of the work of all the guillermo work and and everything else we've done as well but but in
05:24frankenstein we're really proud of it for sure i mean and also i speak for over 300 artists i mean
05:29you're talking about a very large effort and really talented hard-working artists and they're digital
05:34filmmakers you know they aspire to work on a film like this
