00:00105, I'm Brown, Detroit. Still back for your poppin' R&B. It's your boy, Showtime Dazar.
00:04I got a very special guest in studio with me today.
00:07First of all, he's one of the reasons why I do radio, okay?
00:11I don't know if I ever told him that, but this is one of the reasons why I do radio.
00:14Also, when we talk about radio in Detroit, got to talk about this guy because he's had his hand on the culture.
00:20He's just been involved in so much in and outside of just like bringing 313 Day,
00:25which we'll talk about in just a little bit from some of your favorite,
00:27interviewing with some of your favorite artists. There's a ton of stuff, man.
00:31The one and only doctor!
00:33What up, man?
00:34What up, man? I influenced you to do this. What you doing now?
00:38Yeah, I feel like I meant to tell you that.
00:41But yeah, I used to listen to you all the time growing up, so this right here was a full circle moment.
00:45Man, I appreciate it.
00:46First of all, thank you.
00:47I appreciate you having me on, man.
00:50And how are you?
00:51I'm great, man. Feeling great.
00:52You know, it's football season, so, you know, I'm excited about that.
00:57You know, my son is a senior right now at Cass Tech, so...
00:59Nice.
01:00And this is last year, which is bittersweet. He graduates in December.
01:05So, man, I've just been kind of wrapping my head around him being out the house.
01:08I mean, the grocery bill is going to go down a little bit, but just wrapping my head with him being out the house in a few months, man,
01:14is bittersweet. I'm not going to even lie, but that's all I've been doing, man.
01:17Just kind of, you know, spending more time with family lately.
01:20Nice.
01:20Is this weird being on the other side of the mic?
01:22Well, you know I'm interviewing people, man, so now you get to be in the hot seat.
01:27Not lately, though, because, you know, I've been doing a lot of podcasting, you know, a lot of questions that have been coming up.
01:33So it's cool to kind of, you know, tell different stories that I've already been previewed to hear.
01:41So it's actually kind of cool. It was weird when I interviewed with Mason back in March, because, you know, me coming up under him
01:52and watching him do his thing and me learning from him and then him interviewing me was kind of like, wow, this is crazy.
01:59So, yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:01You talked about this before, but just in case people don't know, where'd you get the name Dr. Derry?
02:06How did that come from?
02:07Man, it was weird. Like, I couldn't, I didn't know. First of all, I didn't like my government name, you know, so I didn't go with that.
02:17My government name is Darius Summers. I tried to go with Darius, and then I got thrown into, like, my first ever shift was The Quiet Storm.
02:28So literally, I'm on here trying to sound sexy and it's Darius said, here's your next song type.
02:35And then, you know, one day I just came up with Dr. Darius. I was kind of, you know, Dr. Dre, Dr. Darius, Dr. Doolittle, Dr. I'm going to roll with that.
02:47I had a weekend shift, and I just rolled it, and I stuck with it ever since. So it was like a roll the bowling ball.
02:56It wasn't a strike, but, you know, it was enough pins for me to just keep the name around.
02:59Yeah, yeah, and it, you know, it stuck around. How did you get into doing the radio things? I remember you saying something about you was doing the sports first, right?
03:08Yeah.
03:08So then how did you get into the actual hip-hop radio? How did that go?
03:11Well, in high school, I hooped. I went to CMA, Communication, Media Arts High School. Go Pharoahs.
03:19And, you know, we just got a basketball team. We weren't that good at the time.
03:26And I was on JV about to move with the varsity, and it was one of those moments where I felt like,
03:32man, do I want to just play and practice and then sit on the bench during a game?
03:39And I think it was a senior night one night, and I was like, well, let me just play the music and, you know, announce the players.
03:46So I did that, and then—
03:48Oh, so you was doing the Mason before.
03:50Yeah, I was the PA announcer in high school.
03:52And, man, like, we almost won that game. Like, we was getting smacked, you know, by other schools.
03:58And we almost won that game.
04:00And people used to come to our schools because CMA had, like—I mean, it was like 96% girls and 4% guys.
04:07So all the guys played all the sports.
04:09But anyway, long story short, I stopped hooping, became the PA announcer.
04:13Then I took some extra classes where I was actually out learning how to be a play-by-play commentator for football games.
04:20And I actually won broadcast over the year—well, sportscaster over the year.
04:23And Mason was the keynote speaker.
04:26So Mason kind of tell a different story, but what happened was he was the keynote speaker.
04:31And I always wonder, like, bro, like, who is—you know, his morning show, like, who is Ducey and Granny?
04:36And, like, are you—like, do you have a safe in there because you give away $98 every morning?
04:42He was like, if you ever want to see how it goes down, just kind of pull up.
04:45I'm like, how am I going to pull up? I'm in high school.
04:47Like, I can't just skip school, but we had senior skip day.
04:50So I didn't go to Bell Island with everybody else.
04:52I went to the radio station.
04:53I saw—you know, I'm thinking, Tune Up Man is atop of the Panosco building doing traffic.
04:59This man is sitting in the studio on the phone with a music band behind him.
05:02And then, you know, as far as, like, the money, he took, like, a newspaper and just put it up to the mic.
05:07It was like, 10, 20, 30—I'm like, this dude, nothing that I thought is happening.
05:12So it was the theater of the mind that really got me into it.
05:14And after that, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.
05:17I went straight to Specs Howard, got an internship with Mason at the time, and stuck with it 25 years.
05:23Nice.
05:24So you never decided to go back to, like, doing the sports thing until, like, later on in your career,
05:29which we'll get to about the Piston thing.
05:31But you was like, okay, this is it.
05:32The hip-hop radio is where I'm going to stick with it.
05:34I still stuck with sports, but no, not as much as I, you know, delved into the hip-hop and R&B radio world.
05:42And, you know, I was coming up the ranks, you know what I mean?
05:45So I started, you know, part-time.
05:48Then I was working overnights, so that was 2A.
05:52What was that, like, man?
05:52Because overnights, that's not a thing no more, for real, in radio.
05:56But, like, did you have listeners for overnight?
05:59Absolutely.
06:00You did?
06:00Plant workers overnight, I'm talking to them all the time.
06:03What?
06:03Plant workers calling in, like, yeah, this such-and-such shift.
06:06We at JNAP.
06:07We at SHAP.
06:08We at, you know, so, you know, it was cool to talk to.
06:12I mean, I thought the same thing, but the phone lines did light up when I asked them to call, for sure.
06:17That's what's up.
06:18Something that people don't know that you created in the city of Detroit is not a huge thing.
06:23Okay?
06:24313.
06:25You are the creator, the originator, the person who is the reason why,
06:29we got 313 Day shirts.
06:30Talk about that, man.
06:31What made you come up with 313 Day?
06:34At that time at radio, I felt like the city just wasn't together, you know, on so many fronts.
06:41Business-wise, we weren't kind of supporting each other.
06:44Music at the time, definitely not.
06:47And I just wanted to see a day that we all just collectively came together and supported each other, you know,
06:54just to have that Detroit unity.
06:56That was the goal.
06:57And I opened up the conversations.
06:59That's the one beautiful thing about radio that I love is that you can open the phone lines and have a community conversation.
07:05And, you know, off that one topic, hey, if we had a day, a 313 Day, what would it look like?
07:10And people was calling in and saying, you know, let's support local businesses, black businesses.
07:14Let's support our sports teams.
07:16Let's support our music artists.
07:17And I was just thinking off the top of my mind.
07:19I was like, man, it would be dope if we had, like, an all Detroit show with all Detroit artists.
07:25And a few years ago, I got a chance to see that on 313 Day, man.
07:29And it literally gave me goosebumps, bro.
07:32I was just sitting there.
07:33I ain't going to lie, bro.
07:34I wanted to cry.
07:35I ain't going to even lie.
07:36But I had to be tough around them rappers.
07:38Right, right, right.
07:39Yeah, you can't cry.
07:39I got the goosebumps, man.
07:41And it was one of those moments like, wow, like, we really did this.
07:45You know, we really came together as a city.
07:48And we support each other.
07:48We love each other's music.
07:49Look where our music scene is right now.
07:51So it's good to see, you know, even the hospitals have the born on 313 Day.
07:58The Pistons played a game.
08:00The start time was at 313 on 313 Day.
08:04So it's good.
08:06And it just let me understand that the power of radio still work.
08:09You know what I mean?
08:10You did so well with the 313 Day and still continuing to do things with 313 Day.
08:15That other city started to do their own thing.
08:17You got Flint doing the 810 Day.
08:19And I think St. Louis got a 314 Day.
08:21Yeah.
08:22Did you feel a ways when you saw that, man?
08:23Like, ah, now y'all biting off what we doing?
08:26Not that one.
08:27Not that one.
08:27Like, music, you know, when y'all still love music or a vibe or a wave,
08:31then yeah, that kind of, yeah, that was low.
08:34That rubbed me the wrong way.
08:35But no, it was good.
08:36But it was, again, it was one of those moments where I saw the power of radio,
08:41you know, and the ability to be a change agent in your market, which was cool.
08:46But no, I didn't look at it as, you know, they stole it.
08:50They bit it from us now.
08:51Music-wise, swag-wise, I'm like, hey, y'all don't wear minks down there like that now.
08:56Come on now.
08:56It ain't that hot.
08:57But you know what I'm saying?
08:58Right.
08:58Do you feel like you get enough credit for creating 313 there or does that not, you don't care about that at all?
09:03I don't really care about that.
09:04You know, some people recognize, you know, I'm like this, you know, I don't mind new cars driving on a road that was paved.
09:17You know what I'm saying?
09:18Like, if that makes sense.
09:19You know, it was a dirt road.
09:21We paved it.
09:22And now people are.
09:24And at the end of the day, you want to see your community come together.
09:27And that was it.
09:28You know, I go to Atlanta.
09:29I know I'm in Atlanta because when I hear the radio and I go to L.A., I know I'm in L.A.
09:33Houston, same thing.
09:34Sometimes I didn't get that in Detroit sometimes.
09:36So I just wanted to kind of bring that vibe and that energy back to the city for the city.
09:42So I'm cool with it.
09:44You do a podcast talking about Detroit Pistons.
09:48Now, before we get into Detroit Pistons and everything, what is the biggest difference in your opinion from doing a podcast and in the radio?
09:56Because there are two different vibes for people who don't know.
09:58They do have two different.
09:59Or maybe they don't to you.
10:01No, they do.
10:02Yeah.
10:02In my opinion, I feel like radio is like in and out, different messages.
10:06You know, you're selling products, pushing concerts, tickets, and you're in and out the song.
10:15Podcasts, you can literally, you have to pace the conversation.
10:19Yeah.
10:19And you can talk about a lot.
10:22And you're not just rushing in.
10:24Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:25And you out.
10:26you know you literally can have a genuine conversation uh with folks instead of just
10:32kind of getting in and out that's what i love about the podcasting world for sure which one
10:36you like better or is there better for you um i like both but i like podcasting more
10:43you know i i understand what radio does i understand the business um but podcasting is
10:52is a lot more funner in my opinion okay two more things man and i'm gonna let you get up out of
10:58here um let's talk about your piston podcast how did first of all how did you get involved with the
11:03detroit pistons doing all the things that you do with them how did that start um just being like
11:08an ambassador community partner uh at first um i know that i used to um help out rick mahorn with
11:17this uh know your black history uh thing i think he's going on 20 years with that but he gave away
11:22money scholarships um just being around the team community wise uh just being that face of the
11:28city and being able to you know take different players to different schools and you know even
11:34they might not have known the player but they know me or just to kind of bridge that gap just being a
11:40community um and then uh develop some really good friendships uh rasheed wallace is like
11:47my brother from another mother we you know kind of clicked when he first got here hung out ever
11:53since um and then just being around the team uh over the years just supporting them ambassador wise
12:00uh i had a conversation with um with some people in the front office and um we were talking about
12:06doing a podcast for a couple of seasons and um i really had time this past season and uh we just
12:14kind of got into it and it's one of those things where we just do behind the scenes interview uh
12:18ask the players different questions which is cool uh because you see the players on court but there's
12:23some different questions that you might want to ask off um that you see that you know that they're
12:29into off the court or um no that was cool um just interviewing the players um we do it in season
12:36and uh it's on youtube who was one of the most interesting that you interviewed so far
12:41you interviewed i see uh i think it was stew i seen uh beasley um was ron holland was he one of
12:48them yeah yeah so who did you talk to that you kind of surprised you or it was like he's a very
12:53interesting person i would say ron and bees you know i learned a lot from bees uh bees was probably
13:02my favorite one that you did because i didn't know he had ties to the city so that one yeah i didn't
13:05know neither yeah and i'm sitting there like i did all my homework but i didn't catch that part i'm
13:10like what and i feel like that's why he played so well here man so like i hate the situation that
13:15he in but i was like okay yeah and i was watching your interview i'm like yeah that's like that was
13:19a good one yeah that's gonna blow over hopefully hopefully he'll be back with the team uh and
13:23shooting them threes and and celebrating with a shimmy right right you know uh but he was probably
13:27the most interesting and ron holland i mean i feel like anybody that i don't know it's always my
13:32best interviews like i you know anybody out in radio land you do an interview with an artist and
13:37they send you this sheet it's like a one sheet of i don't need none of that if i don't know you
13:42those are my best interviews like ever right yeah i agree with that because then it's like when you
13:47gave me stuff it's too easy um last thing well kind of um predictions for the pistons now season
13:56about to get ready starting like what two weeks yep a couple weeks uh we got media day next week
14:02preseason uh i think a week after that my prediction is that the pistons will do well i i
14:08can't i don't know what all the injuries in the east i think the team is gonna be good so
14:13how you what i know team gonna be good but how do you feel like i feel like we have a good core
14:20i'm glad treason uh he he bought the core back added some different pieces but i think we're gonna
14:26be pretty good this year yeah the playoffs yes second round yes we stay healthy i'm i'm going
14:34second and and above um can we win nba chip of course we can just got to get it done so i normally
14:41like to do my assessment after the first 25 games yeah me too because i like i like jb bickerstaff as a
14:51coach i actually i'll take that back i love jb bickerstaff as a coach i got a chance to see him
14:55behind the scenes talking to some of the players you know it's x's and o's but at the same time he's
15:01the type of coach where he pull you to the side say hey how you doing today how your family doing
15:06today what you working on personally yada yada just having those conversations and people in the
15:10front office as well so you know once you get that and you feel like it's not a lot of pressure
15:16but in the locker room is fun you got a k a a player like k cunningham um all-star who's going
15:23to come down and give you his best every night offensively and defensively passing the ball so
15:27i like our chances i'm not gonna even lie were you there for the playoff game i was i was sick for
15:34the first uh two home games i scheduled something out of town but man it was electric oh my gosh i've
15:41never heard the pizza box aka little season's arena it was so loud and rock that loud like ever
15:49for a concert a red wings game a piston game like ever never heard it that loud bro it was amazing
15:56bro that was electric fun i can't wait till we had that back man all right tell everybody when they
16:00could find the podcast set and everything you got going on now here's a real last question real real
16:04quick look young jiji was here two weeks ago yep your son he was at your son high school talk about
16:10that real quick man before i let you get up out of here how what was that experience like i think
16:13you've met jeezy a couple times right so i got it oh yeah first time you know no no i didn't think so
16:18but i just yeah no me and jeezy go back to like
16:20mix your power summit if y'all ever looked at a mix your power summit in the bahamas is when i first
16:32met jeezy and i reminded him that i reminded him of that uh when he came in and did an interview for a
16:39book i said bro i done been with you for your whole career from mix your power summit he said oh
16:45you met young jeezy at the time yeah so um you know to me young jeezy and to jeezy to j jenkins the
16:55author you know it was cool to kind of be on that journey with bro you know from uh and he genuinely
17:02loves the city so for him to come back and it's not just he's coming in to do a concert he's coming in
17:08to touch the city you know so for him to come in it wasn't just a school visit it was really a henry
17:13ford health fair where we got a lot of men to come in and get tested for various things that we normally
17:18to just don't get tested for and then they actually gave away trips i don't know somebody won a
17:24um uh trip anywhere in the u.s with southwest airlines it was all types of stuff that they was
17:31giving away and you know jeezy was just there to support you know the health initiative talk to the
17:35kids and let them know that they can make it in life no matter where you are in life you know
17:39your current situation is not your only situation type stuff um and that was it so it was good to
17:46for those young adults to get that experience to see somebody that they can kind of touch reach out
17:52and touch high five and not just see him on tv all the time and you know jeezy down to earth so he
17:56ain't gonna just tell you nothing crazy he gonna give you the real so that was that was a great
17:59experience for the for the for the youth it looked and for henry ford health to come out and do what
18:04they did dope man one of the goats in radio man um i feel like people don't give him enough credit
18:09so i feel like i had to give him his flowers man because like i said man he was person that i was
18:13like he's dope and every time i hear him on the radio use the shazam that was a thing yeah i heard
18:19that so much man i wanted to steal i ain't gonna cap to you but tell people where they can find your uh
18:24the podcast what you got going on your instagram all that stuff man uh instagram you go there you find
18:29everything else uh dr detroit radio dr detroit radio thought about changing it a few times but
18:35i'm gonna keep it the same um you can find uh the youtube the podcast on youtube uh you can go to
18:41detroit pistons tv and then my podcast is launching it's the uh people mover podcast you can find out
18:47on youtube as well in a few weeks dr dairies is 105 when the bounce peace yeah yeah yeah
