Please Follow Me! Thank's for watching...
Transcript
00:00Across Yorkshire's Moors and Dales, the world's most famous vets set the benchmark for animal care.
00:08And James Herriot's legacy lives on.
00:14His former trainee, Peter Wright...
00:16All my life, I've enjoyed doing this.
00:18...has been a Yorkshire vet for over 40 years.
00:22There we are. How are you doing, my old mate?
00:25Peter's old partner, Julian Norton...
00:28Not quite the same as operated in theatre, is it?
00:30I know.
00:31Now has two practices.
00:33I don't want to let him go.
00:35One of them in the town where Herriot worked, surrounded by the North Yorkshire landscape he loved.
00:41Everything that you can see all across there is Yorkshire.
00:44And in the foothills of the Pennines...
00:47That's a Hollywood smile.
00:49...a new generation of town and country vets also uphold the Herriot ethos.
00:54I'm just going to have a feel a bit deeper inside to see what we've got.
00:57The teams are united.
00:59We can probably knock this off ourselves, do you think?
01:01Never taking their eyes off the ball...
01:06...has there help animals of all shapes...
01:09It's trying to grow an extra pair of legs.
01:11...sizes...
01:12Tendo gorgeous.
01:13...types...
01:14...and temperaments.
01:17No, don't be nasty.
01:18It's definitely not glamorous.
01:20Cut that mucus out.
01:22But it's varied.
01:23So we've actually found gold, literally found gold.
01:26It's rarely easy.
01:27You've won Mr. Wet t-shirt.
01:29But they continue the Herriot tradition.
01:31It's alive.
01:32Treating all creatures...
01:34It's moving.
01:35I can't believe it.
01:36...great...
01:37You're all right little bird.
01:40...and small.
01:41There we are.
01:42In.
01:43Yay!
01:44Many a famous battle has taken place in Yorkshire.
01:58The 30-year War of the Roses.
02:02Victory over the Vikings at Stamford Bridge in 1066.
02:06Shortly before King Harold's infamous demise...
02:09...down south in Hastings.
02:12Just as Edward II's triumph at Burrowbridge in the 14th century...
02:17...was quickly followed by the less successful Battle of Byland...
02:22...when Edward deployed troops to the top of Sutton Bank...
02:26...hoping in vain...
02:28...that guarding the high ground would halt the advancing army...
02:32...of Scottish King Robert the Bruce.
02:35Here and across the land...
02:40...tributes are paid to all of history's brave soldiers.
02:47The animal kingdom isn't without its own battles.
02:51And in West Yorkshire...
02:53...Matt's on his way to see Lucy.
02:56She keeps two South American rears...
02:59...distant relatives of the emu and the ostrich...
03:02...who ward off prowling foxes.
03:05So this is Mister.
03:06We've had him for about two years.
03:09He looks after our hens, protects them...
03:11...and he's got his girlfriend which is Missy.
03:13I've seen the fox take the hens away physically...
03:15...in the mouse during the daytime.
03:17And then since we've had the rears...
03:18...we've never ever lost a hen.
03:19Such would.
03:20But Mister has just had more than a fox to contend with.
03:26I came out to check on my hens...
03:27...and he was being attacked by two hunting dogs.
03:30He was really, really badly injured.
03:32I caught them chasing them.
03:36So I've actually chased the dogs off.
03:38I was joined by four gentlemen...
03:40...all dressed in camouflage gear...
03:42...who denied all knowledge that they were their dogs.
03:44But they were shouting...
03:45...get in, kill it, kill it, kill it.
03:49The female didn't do too bad...
03:52...but she's just pacing the land because of her nerves.
03:58I'm still shaking.
03:59I've not slept.
04:00We've been up out in the field at two, three o'clock in the morning...
04:03...checking on them just in case they come back.
04:07Hi there, Lucy.
04:08Hi, you all right?
04:09This is Maz, a student with you.
04:10Hello.
04:11So, what's the story?
04:14When I got to him, he was covered in blood.
04:15There were feathers everywhere.
04:17You can see he shook up.
04:18Yep.
04:19Poor lad.
04:20Now, I don't know the injuries...
04:21...because he's been hunkered down ever since the attack.
04:23Right, what I think we'll do...
04:25...and we've got a towel there to cover his head...
04:27...and then I'll get you to wrap a towel around his body...
04:29...so it feels nice and secure.
04:30And then we can put him onto his side...
04:32...and I'll look at those legs...
04:33...and work our way from there.
04:34All right.
04:35Yeah.
04:36Right, let's gently see if he'll just roll him over to this side.
04:39There we go.
04:40That's it, that's it.
04:41Goodbye.
04:42That's it. Good boy. Relax.
04:43Good lad.
04:44Right then.
04:45Good lad.
04:46Oof.
04:51Ugh.
04:52They have a fair gone at him, haven't they?
04:55You can see where the dogs have got mr real good...
04:57...and they've caused some really nasty lacerations around this back end.
05:01around this back end so no wonder it feels horrible because infection can
05:06set in quite quickly obviously there's a lot of inflammation present as well
05:11got a wound there as well but i'm more concerned at this area here
05:19so i'm just gonna have a look underneath you're out there lucia yeah let's see what we've got
05:24going on here
05:24okay relax relax relax relax relax relax that's it not really gone for his right leg have they
05:35that's all clear we need to have a look at see what's going on with that leg because the last
05:39thing i want to see is if they're going to that joint because that's obviously bad news
05:54after practice in thirst wendy and her son craig have brought their 12 year old basset hound
06:01thelma to see julian thelma's coming today with a problem with her left eye she's got a condition
06:09called glaucoma where the pressure builds up we've got thelma when she was about six or seven
06:15adopted that just just brilliant we've been checking the eye pressure every couple of months and it's
06:21been really well controlled but it's suddenly started to become problematic
06:28it's keeping her awake at night and she's on painkillers so i'm just hoping julian can sort
06:33something else out for her as long as she's not even peeing anymore that's the biggest thing
06:38is it still quite bad yeah i have yeah i've been given our pain relief still putting the drops in but
06:53i don't think it's doing any good no it's suddenly swollen up i'm gonna check the pressure again just
06:58now but it's looking like we're going to need to do something altogether more dramatic um good girl
07:06this is called a tonometer it basically measures the pressure in the eyeball and um it tells us
07:13how bad the glaucoma is and in thelma's case at the moment it's really bad i've never seen one as high
07:19that 99 is yeah it's really high that's going to be a very painful situation the only option is to
07:27remove the eyeball it's um fairly kind of horrible surgery but it will be curative so i think it's the
07:36right thing to do and then she'll look a bit funny but she'll feel a lot more comfortable yeah
07:41oh before surgery begins robin and kelly oh darling are making sure felma is as comfortable as possible
07:58so routinely dogs temperatures can drop through an anesthetic so we do everything we can to keep
08:03them warm so we always put socks on them and they get a blanket when they go in theater as well
08:08fashion accessory i'm hoping that she's going to be okay um but she's an old girl so we'll keep
08:16monitoring her closely are you ready whenever we take away part of the body it's the last thing we want
08:27to do but in these cases glaucoma that's unresponsive to treatment is really painful
08:33and this is as bad a case as i've seen i think all right are we ready
08:42coming up oh you can just see the holes where the teeth have gone in matt needs a big birdhouse
08:48right and we'll go head to the top left can david help a unique lamb it was born with five legs and
08:56six feet i've never seen one quite like that and when work friends are reunited skeletal reunion i know
09:02it is it's never too late for an old grievance you must be the only person that asks you for an
09:09interview and then you get thrown in on reception the second day so we're meeting you
09:26in west yorkshire matt's on one of his more shocking emergency calls
09:31godly hell it's uh taking a beating he's helping lucy's rear mr after the big bird suffered a vicious
09:40dog attack my concern is it's a bit too cold out here for him yeah is there any way that you could
09:47we could get a few pallets across the front of that and put him in there yeah because at least in there
09:51he's going to be sheltered how do we get him there i think we'll just carry him you know so we'll get him
09:57all treated and cleaned up and stuff like that while we're here with mr's partner missy still on
10:02high alert the attack's been traumatic for all involved i did think it was irreparable i didn't
10:08think he was going to make it at all because there was that much blood but he's very strong
10:15the wounds are really quite nasty but thankfully there's no penetration to any deeper or more vital
10:20structures so we're going to give all of that a clean and give it a flush out get him started on
10:24some serious therapy and hopefully we'll start to make progress i know i know it's uh it's uh
10:33it must have put up some fight to have only those scabs and scratches here and there what kind of dogs
10:39were they like hunting dogs you can just see the holes where the teeth have gone in so what i'm doing
10:44is i'm flushing this out to clean out any nastiness that's knocking around there and the body can start
10:50to have a chance at healing right then so i'm just going to find a bit of muscle to put this in goodbye
10:59so that there's an antibiotic injection
11:03all right anti-inflammatories now
11:06vet student malissa is shadowing matt it's really sad to see such cases but it's a very good
11:12opportunity for me to learn and proving to be extremely useful so you just sit him up you just
11:17sit him up there right me and you'll go back miss has got a lot of strength there which is good but
11:27the wind and the weather over here is just nasty and we're going to get him into this little shed so
11:32it's nice and warm and we can be sure that he's not at risk of hypothermia this is missy and she's come
11:38to see what's going on she's been really really upset about it all because they're always together
11:44they've been brought up together and that's all they know is each other right and we'll go head to
11:49the top left oh no gym tonight for me so while he's in here and he's nice and calm i'm just looking
11:59underneath all his wings some nasty gashes around but i think the deepest wounds we've treated
12:05right let's leave him to it extra pair of hands has been very welcome today so thank you very much
12:16all right right after you it's definitely an exhilarating experience i think it went pretty
12:23well and got the medicine so hopefully fingers crossed he's gonna go grand
12:29i've nearly stopped shaking obviously it was just terrifying to witness it all and see it first
12:35hand one of the your animals the your pets a bite a few inches further down you know it might have even
12:41been a put-to-sleep case the nasty wounds but i'm really pleased that they're in a place where i think
12:46the body can heal right fingers crossed keep it posted yeah see you next time right mouse let's
12:53bounce right see you later see you bye bye nice to meet you
13:00near thirst peter's quite excited about his next job even if it sounds pretty routine
13:17just on a way now to castrate a shetland pony called reggie he's starting to get a little bit nippy
13:24and the owner nicola thinks it's time that he was separated from his testicles what he's especially
13:32looking forward to is an emotional reunion it's going to be a bit of a blast from the past because
13:39nicola the owner's mother sandra worked with me at scaldale she was a fantastic receptionist and
13:47secretary good afternoon scaldale veterinary center incredibly reliable and one of the nicest people
13:56you could have to work with you used to shout at me well you used to shout at me she used to shout at me
14:05peter's head nurse in kirby moorside rachel also worked with sandra at scaldale
14:10well hello stranger hello how are you well i'm very well how are you it's like a i'm fine
14:17scaldale reunion i know it is yeah very well thank you and what we have we here three generations
14:23three generations yeah i know when i was at scaldale you always kept me in my place didn't you
14:27you were a model vet you didn't say that at the time did you well here we are nicola we've got uh
14:35ready to deal with today yeah yeah so it's full of the joys of spring it really is oh crikey what
14:42we'll do i think we'll take him into the box and we'll give him a sedative and then hopefully remove
14:48those bits those annoying little bits that are making him a little bit nippy right mister here goes
14:56what do we'll give me sedative first looks like you've got the neck there peter hey we haven't started yet
15:02come on you know you really want to go on reg now he might wobble a bit on here
15:13can we turn left here please nick
15:17right lovely i'm going to inject him now then he's going to jerk a bit and then he's going to go down
15:22onto his side that's lovely have a little sleep edge just for a short time that's it my old friend
15:35that's grand
15:40you'll be testicles veggie you'll be testicles
15:43it's looking good so far oh bless him you know when you're working with another vet or a nurse
15:55you become very much a team and when rachel came to scaldale right from the word go i just knew she was
16:03perfect and i've got to say exactly the same about sandra no you must be the only person that asks you for
16:09an interview and then you get thrown in on reception the same day well you were just nice and you were
16:18there and we needed you
16:22that's looking absolutely fine we will get a little bit of oozing and that's why we leave these incisions
16:27open so that that can just drain nicely now
16:31that's it oh good job well done there look yeah he's happy now good boy let's go steady reg
16:46well i've got to say it is lovely to catch up maybe we should do it more often we maybe
16:51should we should yeah we should definitely and i think if i remember right um you know if we do meet
16:57up in a hostel or so it's your round i think um well that does not surprise me one piece
17:04on that note lovely seeing you peter i knew yeah see you later bye bye
17:14reggie's recovery now should be pretty uneventful really yes he's a youngster but relatively is nice
17:20and calm and once we got to work i couldn't have had a better patient
17:26i want to say i did find it quite nostalgic to see sandra again and to see her daughter
17:31nicola and her granddaughter she was quite special really it took me back in time
17:36over at thirst's newest vet practice julian is performing delicate surgery
17:49sure right with the help of robin and kelly he's removing the felma the basset hounds damaged eye
17:56so the first bit is cutting through the skin around the eye it's more difficult in the basset because
18:03there's so much skin and so much spare tissue really everywhere so taking quite a bit away
18:14i've done this in a all sorts of animals mainly dogs i suppose but i took an eye out of a dagu
18:21most recently wow two cows they were not easy and cracky yeah you think there's a lot of blood
18:27with this kind of thing but with a cow it's four it's fairly slow and steady at the moment never
18:37quite as easy as you think it's going to be it's a question of dissecting around inside the orbit to
18:45get the eyeball sort of loosened off and then um final bit is coming getting it out
18:53so yeah so yeah out now so it's just closing the um the gaping hole back together
19:08considering how much extra skin there is that's sort of flopping in the way looks reasonably neat that
19:15ready yeah can she say goodbye to her socks yeah she can
19:23all right you're ready one two three i'm ready we hope that them was going to stay
19:30quite sleepy for the next hour or so and then all being well home home later on this evening
19:42and a few hours later
19:44we rang up at lunch time and we heard all had gone well i'm scared because i don't know what
19:56she's going to look like i'll probably start crying but i'm just dying to get her home
20:00go on tell me this way that's it hey there we are she looks happier already the surgery went fine
20:10off the plan i can see there's quite a big wound but if they heal up nicely now the eyes out the pain
20:17is pretty much gone so she'll be happier and brighter and sometimes it almost instantly better it's
20:24not very nice to look after i'm sure look better once it's healed she seems okay a little bit subdued
20:30just hope she's not in any more pain that's the main thing that was the right thing to do so
20:35happy with that get you home
20:37oh elm has recovered really well the site where we remove the eye looks great see you bye she needs
20:48to take it quite steadily for the next few weeks things can go wrong in terms of dislodging blood
20:53clots and that sort of thing but it's a question of keeping calm and letting nature do its uh healing
20:59thing now after they met on a rural dating site amanda recently moved up from cornwall to live with
21:16paul near huddersfield and she's quickly learned that life as a yorkshire sheep farmer is never dull
21:24but even paul was shocked by one of their newest arrivals
21:32it was born with five legs and six feet
21:37it was a big big surprise seeing it uh when it first land coming up at five o'clock in morning
21:43when we've said every day is a circus up here but this has taken it to the extreme
21:48i didn't expect the leg to grow in proportion to the sheep but it has
21:52i think that's the most weirdest thing about it that it looks been growing more than what the lamb
21:57is the bone and everything the farm animal team in huddersfield have been monitoring the situation
22:05and david's just arrived with concern growing as lambs walking now swinging away and it's catching
22:11between its two legs and it's getting big it's getting ever weight swinging it's just bothering it a bit
22:15now i think hello hi there so it's still been growing this fifth leg then yes yeah yeah it's
22:22now dragging on the ground is it it's going to become a real real problem for it right i'll just
22:27get my boots on and then we'll have a look at the size of it it's dirty mate it's dirty i've never seen
22:37one quite like that you get all sorts of sort of bits i've seen some that have been stillborn but i've
22:42never seen one that's just lived and grown like that that'll be a birth defect so when it's sort
22:48of cells were multiplying as it was growing in the womb some of them went to the wrong place or
22:53doubled when they shouldn't have and it's trying to grow an extra pair of legs it's going to be pretty
22:57painful and uncomfortable go on then little man poor thing it's getting in the way of it moving around
23:03yeah david's made the decision that successful surgery is possible i'm pretty optimistic we can
23:14get that off it's going to be an interesting one certainly let's hope there's no uh unexpected
23:20surprises in there you never really know what you're going to get with these kind of things
23:23because they're so unusual to help him with the extra leg david has an extra pair of hands
23:32here we got a little bit of sedation that belonged to vet student izzy and then now if you hang on to
23:39the foot is it while i scrub it please yeah i've got a limited amount of time so i need to crack on
23:44coming up january 1982 green stony buff farm from memory lane to the modern day they're good calves
23:55they can't falter good well that's fair praise indeed coming from mrs green yeah will there be high
24:03fives after david's lamb limb removal what we can't have is too much blood loss because she's not big
24:09enough to sustain a massive bleed that's the bleeder head to yorkshire the home of our vets with this
24:18chance to win a three-night stay for two at the mill new york located in the heart of the city with
24:23views of the minster daily breakfast is included as well as dinner on one evening at peach's bar and
24:28grill and a prosecco afternoon tea for two in the garden room and that's not all you'll also head out on
24:34a full day's tour through yorkshire's stunning coast and country including a ride on the north
24:39york moore's steam railway to enter text vet to six double five double five texts cost two pounds
24:46plus one message at standard network rate or post your name and phone number to vet po box seven double
24:53five seven derby de one zero np lines close at midday on the date shown on screen and three working
25:01days later for postal entries to refuse marketing texts and sms with stop rules winners privacy policy
25:09and customer care at winon5.com good luck
25:25in west yorkshire matt's client lucy was left shocked
25:29when one of her rears suffered a violent dog attack so that night when matt left we'd managed
25:35to get mr into the field shelter and that was fine i laid in the field shelter with him and we
25:40stroked him and it was lovely all the treatment was in place done everything that we should have done
25:45but unfortunately he just didn't pull through
25:47we still live with missus and missus did not cope well on her own at all without him she just was so
25:59upset and it was just awful to see because she was looking for him all the time
26:03so the new arrival has been absolutely amazing for her she's come around a million times because
26:11she was so lonely before on her own so she's back to herself again now
26:17matt's come back to see how the new bird is settling in
26:21hi lissy all right good to see you again how's things yeah good thank you good good good
26:26so sad to hear about mr and it sounds like he just deteriorated since we saw him did it
26:31so we kept him sheltered all night and he was totally fine and then we came to the surgery to
26:34pick up the medication that we needed to pick up yeah and um unfortunately when we got back he'd
26:39already gone really that quick yeah so quick he was fine in the morning yeah and seeing his perk
26:45yourself and then yeah it just gone by the time we got back i mean the thing is with birds it's
26:49something that no matter how big they are they are so so stressy maybe uh cows such like that can
26:56you know can survive through and handle that degree of stress whereas birds are just so fractious no
27:01matter what the size and i mean it was a long shot but we did what we could definitely oh definitely
27:09well i understand miss has got a new partner now yeah yeah when we got the new one then they were like
27:14a long-lost couple they just ran towards each other in the field and they've been inseparable
27:18ever since oh fab how old is her new boyfriend two yeah and she's three oh brilliant what we're
27:25calling him uh maverick for now maverick oh right okay yeah right i'm about to feed them don't you
27:30oh i'd love to help you feed them yeah let's feed the dinosaurs
27:33hey which is the favorite bread or lettuce do you want your fingers no i don't value them
27:40not only they look like dinosaurs when they're running towards you
27:43i think they eat like dinosaurs as well so uh breakfast time and if any rear deserves a special
27:49treat it's missy look at this oh new person there you go missy she took it very gently too
27:58right come on maverick whoa tasty and it's better for you than white bread as well
28:05there you go down the hatch oh thanks so much for having me over for breakfast and it's so good to see
28:11them looking so well yeah it's obviously still so sad that we lost mister but when you look at the
28:19amount of trauma that had gone through and from such a horrific dog attack as well it was always going
28:25to be a long shot and unfortunately it's a reality that as vets we have to deal with and it's horrible
28:32not just for the owners but it's horrible for the animals that are often partners with them
28:39at least miss is still here and it's good to see that she's back on her feet now and she's got a good
28:44bond with maverick
28:44one of peter's newest farming friends is abby up on the north york moors
28:57if you just open that rope that might work i'll do my girl power
29:03good to know you now and he's introduced her to some old friends
29:08hey abby hello you all right which meant abby could provide gene and steve green with some new
29:15four-legged friends oh the two bunny and steve oh grand beautiful just what i wanted
29:26to give abby an even better feel for thirst farming history today peter's meeting her at the original
29:32harriet practice where he worked until 1996 alongside the great vet himself now then peter how are you
29:40doing i'm good thank you how are you i'm very well thanks because he's promised to give a guided tour
29:46to the whole family hello hello nice to see you well this was the dispenser here is this where you used
29:55to keep all your lotions and portions peter well it was i mean a lot of these hark back to before my time
30:01you know they have colorings in to make them look more potent and useful than they actually were
30:06and i think in those days you know animals either survived or they didn't
30:13it's quite special because i've got abby here and a family who to me are traditional family farmers
30:20this was a consulting room so we had a table in there we would stand here and see dogs when they came in
30:25but going back to be before my time you know you wouldn't see a dog and a cat was even rarer
30:31and it's lovely to welcome them and show them what my life used to be like to some extent going back
30:36to the 80s when i came back to work here as a veterinary surgeon and certainly whenever i step in here
30:41it brings back lots of memories
30:46this was the office a couple of telephones on here this is where all the visits would come in you
30:52would then write it in the day book to use the words of donald sinclair and alf white us young
30:57fit lads would be out doing work donald didn't like us sitting out in the office because we weren't
31:02earning any money it's really interesting to see what it was like when peter was here
31:10so i'm really enjoying my doubt and it gives us a break from the farm and there's many farmers names
31:17i recognize here january 1982 green stony roof farm visit heifer if that was nowadays you'd be going to
31:28see one of our heifers what we dropped off for them well i would wouldn't have and i've got to say i
31:34don't go so much now because they're very healthy
31:41but seeing as abby's in firsk they decided to pay a visit to the latest of her calves
31:47to be rehomed at stony broth farm yeah we brought frosty the calf down hello frosty so we better go
31:56see how she is doing that oh you buggery bit bloody yeah you've got some teeth hello anybody about yes sir
32:09well i've got a visitor with me yeah all right how are you good yeah how are you so you delivered this
32:15car fairly recently i believe didn't you yeah yeah let's have a look looks a nice calf it's a good
32:22long cough it is a good long car steve yeah it has a good frame how's she settling in it's settling in
32:29not too bad good but you make a lot of noise for a human ah have you trained it well it might take
32:37off to me and watch for all fun oh you're one of them are you oh they're good calves they can't fall
32:48good i'm pleased she's settling in well for you and that's fair praise indeed coming from mrs green
32:58today has been a good day and to top it off we've come to see the calves was delivered here
33:04just looking happy and content and it's nice to see that they're doing well and we know that stevie and
33:11genie look after them very well you take care abby yeah you too bye yeah bye love
33:21it's been lovely to see abby and her family here in thirsk and i thoroughly enjoyed taking
33:26the trip down memory lane back at my old practice so uh all in all a very good day
33:40near huddersfield david's performing one of his most unusual operations on paul and amanda's lamb
33:47so i've been through the skin and i am doing a mixture of sharp and blunt dissection because
33:58you don't know exactly what's underneath he's removing her fifth leg which has two feet what i'm
34:03worried about is that somewhere in here is a big honking artery what we can't have is too much blood loss
34:13because she's not big enough to sustain a massive bleed
34:23it's fiddly even if you're doing a dog in the surgery with normal legs and you know exactly where everything
34:29is
34:33it's connected way more than i thought
34:35there's a lot of muscle there and that's the bleeder
34:45i knew there would be a big blood vessel in there somewhere
34:50she's doing all right isn't she just keep your hands on it was a major arterial blood supply didn't
34:56last little bit so it's always gonna bleed a little bit just don't relax too much paul and amanda just in case
35:05the
35:08excellent and although the lamb now has the right number of legs feels weird
35:14david can't relax yet either
35:18the problem is because the anatomy is so abnormal it's not like you can predict where
35:25the artery was going to be i've just got a big leg then with blood supply going yeah
35:29it's like growing crops you know they're not going to grow us there's no water
35:35it's weird it's just uh i don't know it's intriguing innit all stitched up and closed
35:42certainly was a tricky one we're just gonna i'll take a gaslight
35:48she's still going to be pretty sleepy for a little while she needs some time to to come
35:52around from all the anesthetic and the trauma and the surgery
35:54she thinks she'll be better with mum yeah yeah we'll get mum in this one
36:02this one here it was fascinating something i don't think i'll ever see again hopefully
36:07great that it's all gone well too much of a blood loss and dave had it all under control excellent
36:15amazes me that she's up and about already yeah yeah she's just as if nothing's happened
36:23cheers david thanks very much brilliant i'll be back here hopefully in a couple of weeks
36:27yeah take the stitches out see how she's doing obviously keep a close eye on and let me know if
36:31there are any concerns in the meantime certainly was an interesting one but she's doing really
36:37well she's back in the pen with mum just don't want to charging around and banging that wound now
36:42so we're going to keep a close eye on her not let her do too much exercise keep it nice and clean
36:47and then hopefully in a couple of weeks i can come back get the stitches out and let them get on with it
36:51still to come come on thelma this way when thelma returns julian's weight lifting
37:01one less high but no less heavy and checking on reggie the pony i saw his little step over there
37:07like ronaldo makes peter want a kickabout i like a bit of football reggie

37:50in thirst wendy's brought thelma back to the practice three weeks after julian had to remove
38:01the 12-year-old bassett hounds eye it's healed lovely she's much happier she's sleeping better
38:08she doesn't seem like she's in pain anymore at all and i think it just sounds awful getting the dog's eye
38:14removed but it's it's like it's the best thing we did for her
38:19thelma hi yeah hello thelma how are you come on thelma this way
38:23so i'll take the front and you'll take oh thank you thank you there you go one less side but no less
38:34heavy so she's been doing all right i guess brilliant absolutely brilliant to me it's how
38:41i imagine having a chronic bad headache will be constantly when you take it away very often within
38:47a matter of a few hours you've got dogs that are really really happy it looks like it's here look
38:52very well a little bit scabby but you always get a little bit of scabbiness there because um
38:59there's quite a big hole that needs to fill in
39:02she's braver than me i think i'd have to be sedated to have that done
39:05well she can't see what i'm doing yeah true she's been a really brilliant patient actually right from the
39:10beginning and you're done all done this is good she's doing really well now she's clearly a lot
39:18happier and brighter the tail hasn't really stopped wagging all the time she's been here
39:22and now those stitches are out that's the start of her next chapter
39:28and the next chapter contains lots of love and attention back at home
39:33oh yeah she likes that oh yeah yeah she does you good girl i'm just so happy i mean obviously she's
39:43getting old and i was really worried about the operation with that age but she's just a happy
39:48little old lady you coming up oh man there's a good girl there she is ah yes a good girl
39:58oh i'm just so happy she's out of pain she's gone into a bit of a settee slog now
40:07i wouldn't have her any other way
40:15near thirsk peter recently enjoyed a work reunion when he castrated shetland pony reggie
40:22and although his former colleague sandra isn't here today he's looking forward to seeing her daughter
40:27nicola and granddaughter holly it's my last call of the day and it's rather a nice one be interesting
40:34to see if reggie's calmed down a bit from when we had to castrate him good afternoon afternoon peter
40:42how are you okay i can see that you're busy well we're trying to keep him right peter look at him
40:49he's a little stunner he looks absolutely magnificent doesn't he i'm pleased with him
40:54he's come on a treat i think having his bits off was the best thing that could have happened absolutely
41:00we've had very little biting yep um he's not stroppy so proud of absolutely let's have a look at you reggie
41:09it's all right oh reg well reggie reggie we'll give you your vaccination shall we
41:16good boy there's a good lad nearly done it's all right good lad
41:24do you want to go for a canter round yeah i said i'm not quite as keyed on him now
41:30look at that he's just giving him a kiss on his nose that's lovely what's two-year-old settling does
41:36that i know lets a dog kiss i know doesn't go kiss him on the door yeah i don't think reggie
41:42could look better really because uh nickel and holly are on the ball and they aren't the only ones
41:49he plays football in his stable with his treat football
41:56i could see him doing an amazing run down the wing you know
41:59well i saw a little stuff over there like ronaldo
42:06fantastic it's interesting to see how his characters developed since i saw him last
42:12he's now what you'll call a real sweetie his best mates are the dogs he's obviously a budding
42:18footballer as well but when peter tries to get a game with reg aldo i don't like him with a football
42:24reggie so as far as football's concerned i think uh reggie thinks it's full time now yeah
42:42near huddersfield it's a couple of weeks since one of david's most fascinating cases
42:48saw him perform surgery at paul and amanda's farm i've come back to see the lamb which had five
42:54legs i made it four it's not every day you get a lamb with five legs and actually six feet there's
43:00always a risk of the wound opening as it runs around after or infection so those were big concerns for
43:06me after the surgery hi guys hello hi david here we are still with her well how's it been she's been
43:15absolutely fine she's got out a couple of times and did mama merry dance around i did worry that
43:21with all that running around it might burst open right should we have a closer look yep let's see
43:25if i can get hold of her ready darling
43:33so i'm really pleased with it the ends are healed really well there's a tiny little gap in the middle
43:38where that stitch is but i think that's going to close no problem you've really well past the danger
43:42zone so i'm absolutely chuffed with that so i've removed the stitches i'm just going to give it a
43:49nice clean up and keep it covered and that tiny patch in the middle will heal up in no time at all
43:57here we go then there you go she's off
44:01all right yeah let's get mother go on definitely worth doing it and you see she can run properly now
44:08oh she compared to the legs mixing yeah fantastic she looks fabulous she's pinging around you think
44:15nothing had ever happened to her right i'll get going thanks very much cheers thank you very much
44:19david enjoy the sunshine thank you for once i'm pleased with that i thought there might be some
44:25complications after the surgery but no issues at all really she's running around happily in the field
44:30with mum which is something she couldn't do before she can enjoy grazing in the field for the rest of the
44:35she it's a gorgeous sunny day for them so it's a win all around
44:46and there's more yorkshire vets next tuesday at eight a slip of the tongue sees rachel shenton descend
44:52into a world of paranoia and fear in the rumor five's brand new thriller starting tomorrow at nine
44:59next one youngster is going to need an x-ray and what better place to be looked after than barnsley's
45:03casualty every second counts new in just a moment
