00:00I
00:18Hi, I
00:22Know today's gonna be difficult so I won't ask you how you're doing
00:26Just just doesn't see real
00:33Yeah, I know I
00:38Got here early in case
00:40You've needed help with anything before the service. I
00:44Think I think we're good. Michael's here somewhere. He's handing all logistics today. Okay. Yeah, of course. Yes, I'm I'm glad
00:51We have him to lean on
00:53Knowing that Sonny and Carly won't be here today. No
00:58No, Monica blames Sonny for a lot
01:03Taking me away from the family
01:06Just
01:07Took Monica so long to realize that it was my fault
01:12And it was my choice
01:14By keeping my distance from the quarter means I know I caused my mom a lot of me. I
01:19think
01:21What happened in the past
01:23Only made you living at that house for the past year
01:27That much sweeter for your mom
01:31She was beyond happy to have her son back under her roof
01:34Why do you understand that and he doesn't and what does that say about my marriage I?
02:00I can't answer that.
02:03But I also know it is a lot easier to be brilliant
02:06when it's not your marriage on the block.
02:10You are a very insightful man.
02:14And an irreplaceable friend.
02:21That's a great picture of her.
02:26She didn't really take any bad ones, did she?
02:29She didn't believe in them.
02:30It's just another reason I respect that woman.
02:37How are you holding up?
02:39I don't know.
02:42I know I have to say goodbye to Monica today,
02:44but there's some part of me that just...
02:49doesn't believe that it's possible.
02:52I mean, none of this is happening.
02:55And even when she was sick,
02:57she still had such a presence in this house.
02:59And this family,
03:00whether she's physically here or not,
03:04it doesn't really matter.
03:09This will always be Monica's help.
03:11I'm so glad we're all heading over to the church together.
03:24That makes it seem like this day might be bearable.
03:29Yeah, it does.
03:31Actually, I gotta head over right now and check on something for Michael.
03:34But I'll see you at the church.
03:35Okay.
03:36Love you.
03:37Love you, too.
03:40Sweetheart, are you ready to go?
03:42I don't know if I'll ever be ready.
03:44But I'm gonna stay strong.
03:48Keep it together.
03:50For Monica.
03:52You got the letter?
03:55Right here.
03:56What are you all standing around for?
04:00Let's go say goodbye to Monica.
04:01Oh, good.
04:06I was just about to call the nurse,
04:08but maybe you could help me?
04:11Hmm.
04:13What's going on?
04:16You can't possibly be ready for release yet,
04:19so why are you out of bed, huh?
04:23Much less all dressed up.
04:25I'm going to my mother's memorial.
04:33Jason.
04:35I am so sorry for your loss.
04:44Thank you for coming.
04:45Oh, of course.
04:47Now, speaking as the mayor,
04:49it's impossible to overstate
04:52how important a pillar
04:54of this community your mother was.
04:57She was right at the heart of it all,
05:00and I respected her
05:02more than I can possibly say.
05:05Thank you for saying that.
05:07She's also a friend of mine,
05:09and I'll miss her a lot.
05:11Yeah, me too.
05:12Yes, I'm sure.
05:15I want you to know
05:16that my mother was planning on coming today,
05:18but at the last minute,
05:19she came down with a bug,
05:20and she wasn't able to travel.
05:21Well, she's okay, right?
05:23Oh, yes, she's okay.
05:24She'll be fine.
05:26You know, it's funny.
05:27I can still remember the day
05:29that my mother and Monica
05:31made peace with each other,
05:32but in the end,
05:34my mother thought of Monica as a friend,
05:38despite all their past differences.
05:44Thank you for coming.
05:47It's the least I can do.
05:48Your grandmother was an extraordinary woman.
05:53I'm just glad that I got a little time with her
05:55since I...
05:58Got back.
05:59Yeah.
06:00Yeah.
06:00Let's go with it.
06:02I'll always be grateful
06:03that she let me live at the Quartermains
06:05when my dad was married to Tracy,
06:07and even when Monica threatened
06:09to throw out my dad and Tracy,
06:11she made sure to tell me that I could stay.
06:15Yeah, that doesn't surprise me.
06:16Yeah, my grandmother's toughness
06:18was how she protected her.
06:20It's all dark.
06:22I think that runs in the family.
06:33Dr. Quartermain was one of a kind.
06:36I admire her so much.
06:38Everyone at the hospital did.
06:40It's true.
06:41We were all so honored
06:42to walk the halls with her.
06:45I'm a little surprised
06:46that Jason, of all people,
06:48was playing the role of host today.
06:50Yeah, you know,
06:51the family was supposed to be here by now,
06:53but...
06:54Looks like he's handling pretty well.
06:57Excuse me.
07:01Michael,
07:02I'm so sorry for your loss.
07:05Your grandmother was a remarkable woman.
07:08And thank you both for being here.
07:10It's our honor to be here.
07:13We should go get us.
07:14Yes.
07:14All this small talk
07:21must be torture for you.
07:23I can take it from here.
07:25It is, but it's okay.
07:29I want to thank everyone
07:30who's coming today.
07:33Thank them for honoring my mother.
07:36Are you sure
07:36that this is really, you know,
07:38a good idea?
07:39Yeah, because from what I was told,
07:40Monica's memorial is, um,
07:43private service.
07:45I'm her son.
07:46Yeah.
07:47The son is still recovering
07:48from gunshot wounds,
07:49and she should still be
07:50in a hospital bed.
07:52Drew, nobody humanly expects you
07:54to attend this.
07:55Go ahead and say it, Martin.
07:56The family doesn't want me there.
07:59Well, I don't care about them.
08:01I don't care about what they think of me.
08:04I have every right to be there.
08:07Yeah, maybe so.
08:09But things between you and Monica...
08:11This is not about how...
08:13how Monica and I ended up, okay?
08:14She's my mother.
08:16She loved me,
08:17and she accepted me
08:19the second that she found out
08:20that I was Alan's son,
08:21and that meant something to us,
08:24even with the way things were lately, okay?
08:26She still...
08:28She reached out to me.
08:30What'd you say?
08:35I never returned her call.
08:37I just...
08:39I...
08:39I thought that she was calling
08:41because of the steps
08:42that I'd taken to...
08:43to protect Scal.
08:45You mean the restraining orders
08:46you've taken out
08:47of members of her family?
08:48I thought that she was gonna side
08:50with the rest of the family
08:51against me, and...
08:54And I'll never know
08:56if I was right.
08:57I just never...
08:58I never imagined
08:59that it would be the last time
09:00I ever got a chance
09:01to talk to her.
09:01No.
09:02No, how could you?
09:04I think with everything going on,
09:05I just, um...
09:07I lost sight
09:10of how important she was to me.
09:12And I'm always gonna regret that.
09:16But I'm not gonna let my anger
09:18against the rest of the family
09:21stop me from saying goodbye
09:23to my mom.
09:29Thank you both
09:30for coming today.
09:31Of course.
09:34You know, my mom,
09:35um, she always told me
09:37how much she liked it
09:37when you dropped by.
09:39I loved hanging out
09:40with Monica.
09:41She was always
09:42such a good friend to me.
09:44And when Maxie
09:45had her heart surgery,
09:47it was Monica's hands
09:48that gave my daughter
09:49new life.
09:51She was a brilliant surgeon.
09:53In fact, she was just
09:54brilliant, period, you know.
09:56It used to drive me
09:57a little bit crazy
09:58when everybody always talked
09:59about the amazing
10:00Dr. Monica Quartermain.
10:02But truth be told,
10:03I was jealous.
10:05But, you know,
10:07the truth really be told,
10:08Monica was no saint, actually.
10:10I'm...
10:10Stop it.
10:11She was a brilliant doctor,
10:15and, um,
10:17her family mattered
10:18more to her than anything.
10:23It's nice that the Quartermains
10:24asked you to speak.
10:26Do you know what
10:27you're going to say?
10:28I've got a pretty good idea.
10:30It's actually kind of
10:31hard to narrow it down
10:32because Monica and I
10:33have been through
10:33so much together.
10:37I've been hearing great things
10:39about the wellness group.
10:41Saved my life.
10:42So I've heard.
10:43The one here at GH
10:44is almost up and running.
10:45I'm thinking maybe
10:46that's something that
10:46I'd like to get involved in.
10:48Well, that's right.
10:49You're going after your degree.
10:50Trying.
10:51It's not easy.
10:53Oh, but look who
10:54I'm talking to.
10:55The woman who has
10:56a full-time career
10:57and a family
10:58and battles
10:59a life-threatening disease
11:00and wins
11:01and still has time
11:03to launch
11:04a major support group.
11:05Please, you are exhausting me
11:08and I will take
11:09all the help I can give.
11:11I think I will just
11:13speak from the heart
11:14and hope that I can
11:15find the words
11:16to express
11:17what Monica meant to me.
11:19I hope it's okay
11:24that I'm here.
11:26I'm glad you came.
11:28I know it probably
11:29wasn't an easy decision.
11:30I'm not
11:32here as a member
11:34of the family.
11:35I'm here for Monica.
11:37She didn't even know
11:37we were related
11:38and she welcomed me
11:39into her home.
11:41I wanted to honor her memory.
11:42I just hope other people
11:43don't get the wrong idea.
11:46You can't control
11:47what other people think.
11:50I appreciate you being here.
12:00Monica would have been
12:05so touched
12:05that you came.
12:07I didn't know Monica long
12:09but she couldn't
12:10have been better than me.
12:11Wanted to pay my respects.
12:13She loved hearing you play.
12:15She always talked about
12:16how talented you are.
12:17True.
12:20Better go find my seat now.
12:22Yeah.
12:23I mean,
12:24you're welcome
12:25to sit with us
12:26if you'd like.
12:27Oh, thanks.
12:29I'm okay.
12:30I'll see you all in there.
12:32Yeah.
12:46Well,
12:46I mean,
12:47he's here, right?
12:48So,
12:49that's a good thing.
12:50Yeah,
12:50it's progress.
12:53Gio's here.
12:55He wanted to honor Monica.
12:58Baby steps.
13:00Sorry we're a little late.
13:23Thank you for welcoming everyone.
13:25Uh,
13:25actually,
13:27Jason took care of that.
13:29That would have made
13:30your mother very happy.
13:34It's time to get this started.
13:35front of the car.
13:44Oh,
13:45I got it.
13:46Bye.
13:46Bye.
13:47Bye.
13:47Bye.
13:48Bye.
13:49Good.
13:49Bye.
14:02Bye.
14:02Bye.
14:02Bye.
14:03Bye.
14:03Bye.
14:03Bye.
14:04Bye.
14:04Bye.
14:04Bye.
14:04Bye.
14:04Drew, I'm not questioning your right to be there.
14:21I'm just wondering if it's what Monica would have wanted.
14:26I know it is.
14:28Just like I know that we would have reconciled if we had more time.
14:35She wouldn't have called me if she'd given up on me.
14:40Look, we loved each other.
14:42She's the only mother I've ever known.
14:49Hi.
14:51I rolled the dice.
14:53I brought some with me.
14:54I'll sign.
14:55And I'm not going to let the quarter mains keep me from Monica's celebration of life.
15:09They've already kept me from her actual life.
15:11And I'm certainly not going to let Jason pretend like he's Monica's only son.
15:16You know, you already sound angry and you haven't even left the room.
15:22Yeah, well, I am angry.
15:24Exactly.
15:25And pardon me, but you just got finished saying you didn't want that anger to stand in the way of your ability to mourn for your mother.
15:31So I think you should be honest and ask yourself, are you showing up at that church really about Monica?
15:38Or is it just another way for you to screw with your family?
15:41On behalf of my family, I want to thank you all for coming today.
15:49We're here to honor Monica Bard Quartermain.
15:54Now, I'm sure none of you will be surprised to know that Monica had some very strong opinions about how this memorial should go.
16:04She was very clear that she did not want this to be a sad occasion.
16:09Rather, she wanted us to have a gathering of friends and family to remember her and to celebrate her life.
16:20And I think Monica was right.
16:21As usual, this is a celebration because we were all lucky to have known Monica and to have spent quality time with her, whether it was personally or professionally.
16:42Finally, I cherish the years that I had with Monica.
16:53She was the anchor of our family.
16:56And she was always ready to welcome people into her house.
17:02Oh, come on, Tracy.
17:06Let's not argue.
17:07We're going to be welcoming a new baby into my house.
17:11The house that Alan gave me.
17:13Good Monica!
17:15Can you let one day go by without...
17:18Why are you laughing?
17:20Because it gets you every time.
17:23I have to be honest with you.
17:25Our house just feels very empty without her.
17:33And I think we're all a little lost without Monica.
17:38When you stood up for Drew as being part of this family, that's really when you became Isis in my book.
17:47You know, it's not going to be easy for him.
17:49People are tough.
17:50Well, he is.
17:52He's tough.
17:53But so are you, Olivia.
17:57And this place wouldn't really be a home without you being here.
18:04I want you to think of this as your house, Olivia.
18:09It's going to take us some time to figure out how to...
18:13...live our lives without our love and our guidance.
18:20But at least for today, we don't have to do that.
18:26Because Monica has left one final message for all of us.
18:33To my dear friends and family, thank you for being a part of my life.
18:46I have so many beautiful memories of all of you that I hope you do too.
18:52Please share them with each other and be happy.
19:01I'm sorry to leave you, but I've had a wonderful life that I truly loved.
19:09Just as I love all of you.
19:12I've known Monica almost my entire life because my grandmother, Audrey Hardy, considered her to be one of her closest friends.
19:32And they worked together at General Hospital.
19:36And my grandmother, who's not easily impressed, used to tell me that she had the utmost respect for Monica as a doctor.
19:47So when I started working at GH, you can imagine I was pretty intimidated to work with the Dr. Quartermain, chief of staff.
19:59But it turns out I didn't need to be intimidated because Monica was so patient and so willing to teach anyone who was willing to learn, no matter their position.
20:16When she looked at all of us, she saw people.
20:21She didn't see titles.
20:22She saw people.
20:24And that's exactly how she saw her patients too.
20:28You know, they were people that she spent time with and connected with, and she treated them with honesty and compassion, and they loved her for it.
20:43And it was the same for all of us, all the staff at GH.
20:49We were her second family, and she took care of us.
20:55Just like she took care of the Quartermains.
20:58And she encouraged us every single day to be the best version of ourselves, and we loved her for that.
21:09She also inspired me to be the best version of myself.
21:15And on the days that I just couldn't, she forgave me.
21:23And I loved her for that.
21:29I wish I'd gotten to know my grandchild.
21:32I know.
21:34It doesn't matter how I know.
21:36I just do.
21:37Dr. Quartermain.
21:38Elizabeth, Elizabeth, I am a widow, and I've lost Emily.
21:43I've lost AJ.
21:45Jason is my only surviving child.
21:49You tell me, if you were me, wouldn't you want to know if you had another grandchild?
21:56I was really lucky to be a part of both of Monica's families.
22:04And my son, Jake, was really lucky to be her grandson.
22:09Good morning.
22:15First of all, I have to say that I was truly honored when the Quartermains asked me to speak here this morning.
22:21Like Elizabeth, I, too, knew Monica for most of my life.
22:29As a matter of fact, some of you may know this.
22:31When I was a young teenager, 15 years old, I volunteered at General Hospital as a candy striper.
22:39And that's when I met Monica.
22:45And I was just so impressed with how poised she was, you know?
22:50And then as the years went on, I watched her navigate her way around the Quartermain family.
22:59Something that I think even the Quartermains themselves might say is not such an easy task.
23:06But then again, every family has their own unique way of expressing their love.
23:14And even though Monica married into the Quartermains, she was a Quartermain.
23:20Through and through.
23:23As a matter of fact, another job that I had when I was a young woman was working for Monica's father-in-law,
23:30Edward Quartermain, who was a formidable and intimidating man.
23:35But even at my tender age, I could see how much Edward truly loved and respected Monica.
23:46For your father's sake, I hope that we can all live happy lives from now on.
23:51You do love him as much as I do, don't you?
23:57Yes, I do.
23:59And I know the reason that he is feeling as well as he is.
24:04Because you've taken such good care of him since he's had his heart attack.
24:08You know, I think I could go to like you, little by little.
24:11Now, now, don't get carried away.
24:13I know that Monica saw caring for her patients as an act of reverence.
24:37The only people she loved more were her own family.
24:43And I know she loved them very much.
24:45And she treasured what time she had with them.
24:51Sadly, Monica's life also saw an awful lot of loss.
24:56She lost her son, AJ, and her two daughters, Emily and Don.
25:02And then finally, her husband, Alan.
25:05But those losses, along with her battles against breast cancer and alcoholism,
25:14only served to deepen her compassion for others.
25:20This is from Maxie.
25:22She heard you were in the hospital.
25:24She tells everybody you're the person who saved her life.
25:28She knows you're going to be okay because you're a general hospital.
25:31And it's the best hospital in the whole wide world, and it has the best doctors and nurses.
25:36And she's right.
25:37You thank Maxie for me, and I will all write her a note.
25:51Monica's generosity, her philanthropy, are two of the biggest reasons that General Hospital,
26:01and even the city of Port Charles itself, are the amazing places that they are today.
26:07I will miss Monica with all of my heart.
26:14But I know that she lives on in her family
26:18and in her legacy at General Hospital.
26:23What?
26:38Mother, that's your cute.
26:46Are you really not going to say anything about Monica?
26:50I can't.
26:51Tracy has to speak.
26:56If she doesn't, she's going to regret it for the rest of her life.
26:59I agree, but it's not our call to make.
27:03You know what?
27:04Maybe she just needs someone to buy her a little more time.
27:09Lucy?
27:09Lucy?
27:10Lucy?
27:10Lucy?
27:10Lucy?
27:11Lucy?
27:11Lucy?
27:11Lucy?
27:17Um, good morning.
27:20Everybody.
27:21Um, I was not asked to speak or scheduled to speak.
27:26Um, why would I be, really?
27:29You know, uh, I am not part of Monica's family, and, uh, we weren't really friends, per se.
27:37But over the years, we have been called acquaintances, rivals, and, yes, most probably enemies.
27:45But I happen to have a very unique perspective on Monica Quartermain, and I think you all should know it.
27:56Like Laura, I, too, shared a passion with Monica.
28:11Everyone knows what I shared with Monica.
28:13The nurses' ball.
28:17As the founder and organizing the ball from the beginning, I worked very, very closely with Monica.
28:24She was chief of staff, and she was chairman of the board, and I could not have asked for a better partner.
28:31As a doctor, she saw the, um, devastating consequences of AIDS and HIV up close, firsthand, and it was so wonderful to know that Monica was as every bit devoted to that cause as I am.
28:48And Monica performed at Minnie Balls, which I'm sure you remember.
28:51She was amazing, and she was also so amazingly generous with her time and her money, and I, I could not ever have done it without her.
29:01You know, I'm going to really miss having somebody that, uh, cared as much about our very special event.
29:10Like me, she cared like I did.
29:14And, of course, we also shared a husband.
29:21The dearly departed Alan.
29:24And I know what you're all thinking.
29:26I can see it on your faces.
29:27This is a bit unorthodox.
29:29The other woman speaking at the memorial, but, um, Monica believed in facing things head-on, so that's what I'm doing.
29:38Head-on.
29:39We hated each other.
29:41I mean, through the years, because of Alan, we really, really hated each other.
29:47I want you to stop seeing my husband.
29:52Because if you don't, Lucy, I will make sure that the hospital knows exactly what a cheap little tramp they have running the daycares.
30:01Oh, wait a minute, Monica.
30:02What?
30:03You know, you really shouldn't make such high-handed threats.
30:05What's that old saying they say?
30:07You know that old adage?
30:08People who live in glass houses.
30:10What exactly are you implying?
30:13And, boy, Alan and Monica could fight.
30:18You know, on separate occasions, sometimes they would just leave.
30:21But they always came back because they were the loves of each other's lives.
30:28Always.
30:28So I guess what we can learn from Alan and Monica is that love doesn't look the same to every couple, but a true love, well, we all know it when we see it.
30:41You know, over the years, we did make our peace, and, um, I'm going to miss her, and I'm sorry she's gone.
30:50But I'm just so happy to know that she and Alan, they're back together again.
31:13Is no one else going to speak from our family?
31:20Um, Lucy was right.
31:45Monica loved Alan.
31:47She loved him so much that she took me in when I was a baby.
31:55She, um, she chose to be my mother.
32:00And from that moment on, she, she was my mom.
32:05No matter how much I try to distance myself, no matter how much I try to push her away, she,
32:10she let me be my own person, and go my own way, and she just had faith and trust that I would find my way back to her.
32:23And eventually, I did.
32:30Jason.
32:31No matter what has been said in anger,
32:35you are my son.
32:41And I love you.
32:44I wasted so much time.
32:52It took me so long to figure out that Monica wasn't trying to make me something I wasn't.
32:57It was that she really...
33:00just, just loved who I was.
33:03You know, the same way, she, um...
33:09she loved everybody
33:10and her family unconditionally.
33:15She told me once that I, I wouldn't be able to see all
33:19the forms love could take
33:22until I had a child of my own.
33:25And she was right.
33:29It wasn't until I had a son
33:32that I realized
33:34what I saw on her face every day
33:39was love.
33:46You know, sometimes it would come out as laughter,
33:48sometimes frustration, but behind it
33:50there was always love.
33:55And it was that kind of love
33:57that made her the best mom
34:01to Emily
34:05and AJ
34:08and to me.
34:11So,
34:12speaking for
34:14all her kids,
34:19I just, I just really want to say thank you.
34:25Thank you for being here.
34:46I don't think I said it enough.
34:48But I love you, mom.
35:00I love you.
35:01What are you waiting for?
35:18What are you waiting for?
35:25Tracy, are you sure you don't want it?
35:28The family decided you would be the last one to speak.
35:31Get up there. People are waiting.
35:32Mother, everyone will be happy to wait if you need a minute to collect your thoughts.
35:36I don't. He's the one that's holding things up.
35:43Okay.
35:48Hi.
35:54I'd like to thank you all for coming out today.
35:58It means a lot to me and my family to see you all here.
36:02I grew up hearing stories about the legendary Dr. Monica Cordomay.
36:09You know, people, they talked about what a brilliant surgeon she was and how much they respected her.
36:15But to me, she was just grandma.
36:21It wasn't until later that I found out that she was this powerful woman, busy saving lives.
36:30And while I understood that intellectually, it didn't feel that way.
36:38She always made time to sit with me and ask me about my day.
36:42And it didn't matter if I was in elementary school or at an office at ELQ.
36:52She, uh, she made the time.
36:56And I had kids of my own.
36:57She made time for them, too.
36:59I consider myself very, very lucky to have gotten to spend the time that I did with my grandmother over these past few years.
37:10And there's some consolation in knowing that I shall never really be gone.
37:18And not as long as we remember her.
37:21So I hope that you all help us in remembering and celebrating the incredible life that she lived
37:28by joining us back at...
37:32at Monica's house.
37:34So, unless there's anyone else who would like to say something...
37:46Next, General Hospital.
38:10She wasn't just one of us.
38:11Monica was the best of us.
38:13I'll help you remember.
38:14Deal.
38:14He shows up at the house.
38:16I think that'll say even more.
38:17I will stop.
38:18Nothing.
38:19Well, don't leave us in suspense.
38:21It's here.
38:21Why the hell are you trespassing?
