00:00Hey guys and welcome to cool vision and this video will travel to Chicago the third largest city in America behind New York and Los Angeles that is home to 2.7 million people. It's the epicenter of Midwest a region in the US known for its farming and manufacturing. They call it America's heartland. Chicago is located in the state of Illinois at the southwestern tip of freshwater lake Michigan. It has the third largest economy in the US with gross metropolitan product of
00:29770 billion dollars which is more than that of Switzerland. The city is known for its bald architecture, diverse economy, universities and urban beaches along the shores of Lake Michigan. But let's talk about its history first. Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837 and grew rapidly throughout the 19th century becoming an important center of commerce and a transportation hub between the eastern and western United States. A flourishing economy brought residents from rural communities and immigrants from abroad.
00:59The great Chicago fire of 1871 destroyed much of the business district and left more than 100,000 people homeless. But despite that the city continued to grow rapidly and by 1900 Chicago was already the fifth largest city in the world.
01:15Today the Chicago metropolitan area also known as Chicagoland is home to 10 million people. It's an international hub for finance, culture, industry and technology. It's home to the Chicago Stock Exchange now called NYSE Chicago where the first standardized futures contracts were created.
01:33There are four major sections of the city. The loop, the north side, the west side and the south side. Let's start with the loop. If you come here for business or as a tourist, this is where you'll be staying. It's a beautiful Sunday night and we're cruising down Michigan Avenue. Let's go, let's go, let's go.
01:51This is the second largest central business district in the United States and the most Manhattan-like place in the US outside of Manhattan itself. The good part is Chicago is much cleaner than New York City because garbage goes out for pickup in the back alleys, not on the sidewalks in front of stores and restaurants as is common in New York.
02:10Chicago's Loop is home to the best entertainment in the city, first-rate hotels and world-class shopping. My first impression was, wow.
02:17The Chicago River and its Riverwalk are just fantastic. You can take an architecture boat cruise up Chicago River and you can gaze up at a lot of cool buildings like Chicago's famous Marina City Towers, AKA the corn cobs.
02:33It was an urban experiment by architect Bertrand Goldberg designed to draw middle-class Chicagoans back to the city after more than a decade of suburban migration because downtown living hasn't always been so trendy.
02:45The Loop architecture has been dominated by skyscrapers and high rises since early in its history. The home insurance building built in 1885 was the world's first skyscraper.
02:56Willis Tower, the third tallest building in the US currently, formerly known as the Sears Tower, was the world's tallest building for nearly 25 years. It has an observation deck, but it was closed at the time of our visit.
03:09Trump International Hotel and Tower is the seventh tallest building in the country.
03:13And here is the tower of the most favorite politician in Chicago, Donald Trump.
03:17The Loop is a first-rate shopping destination. North Michigan Avenue features a lot of boutiques, restaurants and high rise malls.
03:26And a section of it called the Magnificent Mile is an upscale shopping street, home to restaurants, luxury retailers and hotels.
03:33It's the fourth most expensive shopping street in the US, behind 5th Avenue in New York, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and Union Square in San Francisco.
03:42Here you will find such historic landmarks as Chicago Water Tower, the Terracotta Wrigley Building skyscraper and the 100-story John Hancock Center, which is now called 875 North Michigan Avenue.
03:54It's got 360 Chicago observation deck where you can ride Tilt, Chicago's highest thrill ride.
04:00It's an enclosed moving platform that literally tilts you over Michigan Avenue from the 94th floor.
04:05The Magnificent Mile serves as the main thoroughfare between Chicago's Loop District and its Gold Coast, which ranks as the seventh richest urban neighborhood in the US and consists of luxury high-rise apartment towers and stone mansions.
04:19But Chicago is not a concrete jungle. There are plenty of parks like Grand Park. It's a huge urban park which is sometimes called Chicago's Front Yard.
04:29It's home to the Buckingham Fountain and the Pritzker Pavilion, where free concerts and festivals can be a joy throughout the summer.
04:36Another recent addition to the city is Millennium Park, built in 2004 and it features Crowd Fountain, an interactive work of public art and video sculpture.
04:46Lurie Garden, a beautiful and serene park that many people don't even notice because it's tucked away behind the tall hedges.
04:56And the Bean, of course. Cloud Gate is the official name. It's one of the modern masterpieces in the heart of Chicago.
05:02Its design was inspired by the liquid mercury and the sculpture surface distorts the reflection of the city skyline.
05:08It's a great spot for taking pictures.
05:11We are in the Millennium Park and it has a lot of cool installations and art objects, the coolest of which I think is a Cloud Gate.
05:20Right next door is the Art Institute of Chicago.
05:23It's hands down one of the best art museums in the country and one of the largest collections of Impressionist art outside the Louvre.
05:30You can spend days walking around the museum. They had the Obama Portraits exhibition in the summer of 2021.
05:37I could tell there's a little bit of an obsession with Barack Obama in Chicago.
05:41So there's a special gallery of Barack and Michelle Obama's portraits and in order to go there, we had to get a line.
05:48I got 108 people in front of me. That's how popular there are.
05:52If you didn't know this, Barack Obama was a professor at the University of Chicago Law School.
05:57But I was just wondering, can you imagine Donald Trump portrait exhibition in Chicago?
06:02I didn't think so. If you're into museums, then come to Chicago's Museum Campus.
06:07It's a wonderful 57-acre park that sits alongside Lake Michigan and houses several of the city's leading institutions all in one place,
06:15like Soldier Field Stadium and American Football and Soccer Stadium.
06:19The Shedd Aquarium, where you can explore underwater worlds and watch rare and local aquatic creatures.
06:25Field Museum, where you can spend a day exploring natural history and world cultures.
06:31As you enter, you'll be greeted by Maximo the Titanosaur, the largest dinosaur to ever walk the Earth. Amazing!
06:38You're looking at the largest mammal to ever walk the Earth.
06:42But fortunately, he lived 101 million years ago. So he's not a threat anymore.
06:50Here I am!
06:51And don't forget to say hi to Sue, the most complete and best preserved T-Rex ever discovered.
06:56Just the kind of stuff that I enjoy.
06:58And finally, the Adler Planetarium, where you can marvel at the wonders of the universe.
07:04The Chicago Theatre District is a hub for world-class productions, with many theatres like the Chicago Theatre, CIBC Theatre, James Netterlander Theatre and many others.
07:14By the way, this Biograph Theatre on Lincoln Avenue, which was once a movie theatre, was the location where notorious bank robber John Dillinger was shut down by FBI agents after he watched a gangster movie there in 1934.
07:28On a warm sunny day, you can visit Navy Pier, which was opened to the public in 1916.
07:34We are at the Navy Pier. Let's go have some fun. There's the ferry's wheel. There's the carousel.
07:40It extends 3300 feet into the water and offers over 50 acres of parks, shops, restaurants and a 150-foot ferry's wheel.
07:49From here, you can also catch a boat tour or just enjoy some tasty food and views of downtown.
07:58Now, let's take a look at North Chicago.
08:00The northern neighborhoods are desirable for their waterfront location and nightlife, like Lincoln Park, one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Chicago.
08:07Just two miles from downtown, the community is named for the 1200-acre park, which includes beaches, gardens, a zoo, a museum and more.
08:16This is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city.
08:19My friend Chris lives here, so let's talk to him.
08:21People, like, they move here when they're just out of college, right?
08:24They get a good job in the city that pays decently well.
08:26They want to live in this neighborhood because there's a lot to do here.
08:29Then they get married. Then they have their first kid.
08:32Then when they have their first kid, they buy a two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo.
08:35And you can get those for about half a million to $600,000.
08:40From once they have their second kid, though, is when they leave the neighborhood.
08:44Three-bedroom places are typically where things start getting north of a million dollars.
08:48And it gets really hard to, like, juggle having a family and making enough money to support that kind of lifestyle.
08:56Yeah, I would say that the people that you see living in this neighborhood are young professionals.
09:00And they're living in multi-unit built, you know, high-rises like me.
09:04One-bedroom apartment, $1,700, $1,800, $1,900 a month.
09:07Studio is going to be in a range of, like, $1,100 to $1,300 a month.
09:11Two-bedroom is going to be about $2,000 to $2,500 a month.
09:15Next to it is one of the oldest zoos in the U.S., Lincoln Park Zoo.
09:19And it's one of the last remaining free zoos in the country.
09:22And I have to come all the way from Russia to see a polar bear.
09:25But he doesn't want to see me because I can't, I can't, I can't find him.
09:2935 acres of animal farm.
09:31Another nice neighborhood in the north is Lakeview.
09:38Popular neighborhood for young professionals and it has access to three train lines.
09:42This is the home of Wrigley Field Stadium, established in 1914.
09:46This area swells with activity during Chicago Cubs home games.
09:50It's densely packed with lively sports bars and cool pubs.
09:54If you drive even further up north, you're going to end up on Northwestern University Campus.
09:59This university is known as the Ivy of the Midwest.
10:02We are walking on the campus of Northwestern University.
10:05Nice and peaceful.
10:06I'm not a student, but we're certainly enjoying it.
10:08From what I've heard, this university is really famous for its journalism department.
10:12Its campus is sitting on a really nice beachfront area along the shores of Lake Michigan.
10:16Michael, do you swim in the Michigan Lake?
10:19Not anymore.
10:20It's a very cold lake.
10:21And I used to when I was young, we used to dive off of rocks like these into Lake Michigan.
10:28But I think these days I wouldn't get into Lake Michigan anymore.
10:31It's too cold for me.
10:43The west side of Chicago is famous for cool artsy neighborhoods like Wicker Park and Bucktown.
10:47There's always something interesting going on.
10:50These areas draw shoppers hunting for unique finds, foodies looking for the triniest eats and bar hoppers searching for late night buzz.
10:58Westtown is another neighborhood on Chicago's west side and it's home to large Polish and Ukrainian communities like the Ukrainian village.
11:06I've always wanted to visit it and luckily I found some guys to talk to.
11:10So are you Ukrainian?
11:11I'm Ukrainian.
11:12I was born and raised in Ukraine until I was 15 and then my whole family moved here.
11:16My sister is getting married in two weeks and this was like a wedding shower so me and my brother we dressed in Ukrainian clothing.
11:22As far as Ukrainian diaspora, I would say the biggest one is here than Philadelphia, California.
11:30It's a comfortable place to live, right?
11:31Yeah.
11:32This area.
11:33It's a nice area.
11:34Plus, you know, losing like your national identity.
11:36If I'm not mistaken, in some journal or some magazine, Ukrainian village was voted number one either safest or like one of those shiki-piki stuff.
11:44Yeah.
11:45Most comfortable to live in.
11:46Yeah.
11:47Which restaurant would you recommend?
11:48Trizup.
11:49Trizup.
11:50Trizup.
11:51Trizup restaurant.
11:52Try that.
11:53If you guys want to try Ukrainian cuisine.
11:54You're doing Trizup restaurant.
11:55Do you guys have Instagram?
11:56Yeah, I do.
11:57It's called keep it Russian.
11:58Keep it Russian.
11:59Keep it Russian.
12:00Okay.
12:01Now the south side of Chicago.
12:03It's got some nice neighborhoods like Hyde Park and Kenwood, the home of former US President Barack Obama.
12:08Do you want to see the actual home Mr. Obama used to live in?
12:11We are in Barack Obama's neighborhood and this is the house he lived in when he became Senator of the state of Illinois.
12:17He also lived here when he was president and every once in a while he would come into town.
12:22And at this time in my life I was working in the John Hancock building and my office was looking out towards Lake Michigan.
12:32And every once in a while I would see these crazy things kind of happen out the window like a Chinook helicopter flying across the water.
12:38Or I think one time too I even saw Marine Force One which is the, you know, Air Force One is the president's airplane.
12:45Marine Force One is the president's helicopter.
12:47And so you would know he was coming to town when you started seeing kind of, you know, abnormal aircraft flying along Lake Michigan.
12:57And now somebody bought his house.
12:59I believe so.
13:00I don't think they've turned it into a museum yet.
13:02You can see on the sign it says this area is protected by the United States Secret Service.
13:07When Barack Obama was president you couldn't even walk up or down these streets.
13:11There were police on both sides of the street in addition to all these barricades.
13:16I guess.
13:17Do you live here now?
13:18No.
13:19Yeah.
13:20The University of Chicago, ranked one of the world's top ten universities, is also located in Hyde Park neighborhood.
13:26Barack Obama was teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004.
13:33Its campus is nice and one of a kind.
13:35It has its own university police and emergency buttons throughout the campus.
13:40If you're on the campus and something bad happens, what you want to do, smash that button, bam, and the police car is going to be there in a second.
13:51Yeah.
13:52There it is.
13:53Yeah.
13:54While the campus is safe, the university is located in South Chicago.
13:57And as you may know, the south side has a lot of crime.
14:00So students and staff members alike can get robbed and sometimes even killed if they walk in the wrong direction.
14:06Like this poor Chinese international student.
14:09He got shot to death in November.
14:11Riverdale and West Inglewood are some of the most dangerous neighborhoods.
14:15For most Chicagoans, they're like no-go zones.
14:20Chicago's Chinatown is also on the south side, but a lot closer to the loop.
14:24If you enjoy Chinese cuisine, you're going to find a lot of cafes, dim sum pods, and tea houses.
14:30Also on the south side, you can catch a baseball game at guaranteed rate field.
14:35Going to a baseball game is part of the Chicago experience.
14:38This is the home ballpark for Chicago White Sox.
14:41And you've got to try some amazing game food.
14:44I'm going to try a Chicago hot dog.
14:46And it's a foot long.
14:48I don't really know much about baseball, and it's a long game.
14:53But it was fun nonetheless.
14:55We had a blast.
14:56Go White Sox!
14:57And don't forget to visit the Museum of Science and Industry.
15:01You'll get to see German submarine U-505, models of cities and trains, and even the Marvel exhibit.
15:09Chicago is a popular tourist destination.
15:1158 million people visited the city in 2018.
15:14In 2020, Chicago was ranked the sixth most walkable city in the United States after New York, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, and Miami.
15:24It has the second largest public transportation system in the U.S.
15:32The Chicago Transit Authority operates the L trains, L stands for Elevator, Buses, and the Metro train for transportation between Chicago and the rest of the suburbs.
15:45The L provides 24 hours service on the red and blue lines.
15:51In 2016, 27.5% of Chicago households did not have a car, while the national average was 8.7.
16:00You can do without a car, but if you prefer to drive like me, just remember that traffic gets really bad during rush hour.
16:06It's one of those things you'll have to get used to.
16:10Chicago has the third worst traffic in America behind New York and Philadelphia.
16:14However, when it's not rush hour, driving in Chicago is a breeze, and it's a lot of fun.
16:20Take Lake Shore Drive, which is a multi-level expressway that runs alongside the shoreline of Lake Michigan, and enjoy the view.
16:27You may, however, have a hard time finding a place to park.
16:30Residents of Chicago spend 56 hours per year looking for a parking spot.
16:35That's triple the American average.
16:37Chicago has also one of the most expensive on-street parking in the country, with some spots costing $6.5 per hour.
16:44The city also offers bicycle and scooter sharing systems, and cycling is really popular here.
16:50Lake Michigan is one of the five great lakes of North America.
16:53This region is often referred to as the Third Coast.
16:56Let's try the water.
16:57It's so chilly.
16:58After Florida.
16:59No comparison.
17:00The water is so clear.
17:01It's impressive.
17:02Love it.
17:03If there's ever a situation when you get extremely unlucky with the weather, that's going to be me and Chicago.
17:19And you see, it's the fourth day, and it's been raining constantly.
17:22I mean, look at the skyline.
17:24Oh boy.
17:26The water is so surprisingly blue, that you might think you are in the Caribbean.
17:30The Chicago lakefront trail is an 18.5 mile lawn, path for walking, jogging, skateboarding, and cycling.
17:47The city is a popular choice for students as well as graduates looking to start a career.
17:51Chicago has a very diversified economy.
17:53Chase Bank has its U.S. and Canada commercial and retail banking headquarters here.
17:58McDonald's moved its global headquarters to Chicago in 2018.
18:02United Airlines and Boeing are both headquarters in Chicago also.
18:06The Chicago Board of Trade opened in 1848 as one of the world's oldest futures and options exchanges.
18:13The minimum wage in the city is one of the highest in the nation, $15 an hour.
18:17And the average monthly net salary is $66,000, according to Numbeo.
18:24Living in Chicago is cheaper than in New York or Los Angeles.
18:27Consumer prices are 23% lower than in New York.
18:31Compared to the East Coast and the West Coast, Chicago's housing market is probably the best bargain.
18:36For example, the median house value in Chicago is $330,000, according to Zillow.
18:41But in New York it's $705,000, and in L.A. it's $883,000.
18:49The average monthly rent here is $1,600, in New York it's $28,000, and in L.A. it's $2,600.
18:56If you're looking for a big city life, Chicago might give you more city for your dollar.
19:03Hey, what's your name?
19:04Sam.
19:05And you come from Northern Ireland?
19:06Yeah.
19:07Oh, cool. How long have you lived in Chicago?
19:08Twelve months.
19:09Oh, that's good.
19:10What makes Chicago better than other places?
19:13I'd say Chicago is very welcoming for me.
19:16Like, it's somewhere that it's always felt like I've been part of my whole life since I arrived here.
19:20Everyone just kind of extended their gratitude, thanks, and anything they could do to kind of help me and get me set up here.
19:27To me, I've been welcomed as though I was part of the city from my arrive, so I always thought that was pretty special for such a big place.
19:33Very nice. Are you studying? Are you working?
19:35I work as a software engineer.
19:37Any downsides to the city?
19:39Uh, the cold weather maybe in the winter.
19:42Colder than Northern Ireland?
19:43Uh, definitely.
19:45Similar type of seasons, but much colder.
19:47Thanks, man. I love your dog too.
19:49This is Russell.
19:50How you doing, buddy?
19:51Chicago is a fun city for those who love the visual arts, literature, theater, comedy and music, particularly jazz, blues, soul, hip hop, and electronic dance music.
20:01Chicago has the third largest LGBTQ population in the United States.
20:06The Chicago Department of Health estimated that 7.5% of the adult population were LGBTQ.
20:13The Chicago Pride Parade, held the last Sunday in June, is one of the world's largest with over a million people in attendance, and that happened to be in the city right at the time of the parade.
20:27Chicago is a cultural melting pot with huge ethnic communities.
20:30Whatever cuisine you can think of, you can find it here.
20:33The window city has three signature food groups.
20:36Italian beef sandwich, deep dish pizza, and the Chicago style hot dog.
20:40Deep dish?
20:41Deep dish pizza uses a thick layer of toppings and resembles a pie more than a flat bread.
20:46How often do you eat dip dish pizza versus thin crust?
20:49Chicago tends to be known for its deep dish pizza, but to be honest with you, I think it's more of a tourist thing than an ex-old resident thing.
20:58The Chicago style hot dog is an all beef frankfurter, on a poppy seed with an array of toppings.
21:03And the Italian beef sandwich has thin slices of seasoned roast beef.
21:07Trying an Italian beef sandwich here at Portillo's, down on Ontario street, here in downtown Chicago.
21:15And you can have a spicy or unspicy, we got peppers.
21:20Yes.
21:21I chose hot and sweet at the same time, so.
21:23But if you're looking for fine dining, Chicago has 24 Michelin stars restaurants.
21:28In Chicago, you can find cuisines from all over the world.
21:31We stopped at a Portuguese restaurant, and got half a chicken.
21:35Man, looks delicious.
21:36Well, we're sitting at a Georgian restaurant, and I got cachapuli lamb, which is like a stew.
21:42Cachapuri.
21:43And of course, you gotta try some Georgian soda.
21:49Green.
21:50When it comes to nightlife, the city has a great party scene, which you would expect in the big city.
21:56Lots of options from classy rooftop patios overlooking the skyline, to packed nightclubs blasting dance music.
22:02There are tons of late night restaurants, live music venues, and comedy clubs.
22:15But let me tell you, nightclubs and bars are expensive.
22:18We went to this one nightclub, and the entrance was $60 a person.
22:22And the cheapest beer they had was $12 a bottle.
22:27There are a lot of hidden gems, like the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge.
22:31This is the Green Mill Lounge, and the Green Mill Lounge is famous in Chicago because it was a hangout for the infamous Al Capone.
22:39This place offers great live music, especially if you're a jazz fan, and fascinating stories about Al Capone and his legendary booze runs.
22:46This was a popular hangout for the Italian mobsters back in the day.
22:49There are just people here.
22:54So this is the table.
22:56This table is ready.
22:58This table is ready.
22:59This table is ready.
23:00This table is ready.
23:01This table is ready.
23:02This table is ready.
23:03This table has some fun but weird traditions.
23:05Like every year on St. Patrick's Day, they dye the Chicago River green, and thousands of spectators crowd the banks to take pictures of this emerald green water.
23:13Chicago is also known for different festivals and Chicago Marathon, one of the six world marathon majors.
23:20The city is very liberal.
23:22For much of the 20th century, Chicago has been among the most reliable democratic strongholds in the US.
23:27They have not elected a Republican mayor since 1927.
23:32What are the downsides of the city?
23:34The weather.
23:35Chicago winters can be notoriously brutal.
23:37The city's coldest month is January, when temperatures can dip to zero degree average.
23:42To me, as a Russian, it's like, what are they complaining about?
23:45But I understand.
23:46The US has a lot of warring places to choose from.
23:49Not everyone's ready to make such a sacrifice.
23:51The city has some of the highest taxes in the US.
23:54The combined sales tax of 10.25% is the highest in the nation.
23:58Also, the state of Illinois has the second highest property tax in America.
24:02You know, here in the city, we have got like 10 to 12% sales tax.
24:05Plus, you know, you want to live in one of these nice condos over here, two bedroom.
24:09You know, that might be $6,000 to $9,000 a year in property tax.
24:14That's not $6,000 to $9,000 a year, including your mortgage.
24:17Your mortgage is separate from that.
24:18So that's going to be another couple thousand a month.
24:21And then on top of that, you might have homeowners association fees of $500 to $800 a month on top of that.
24:28So it's all paid for.
24:29But the biggest downside, of course, is crime.
24:32That city has a reputation of being the nation's murder capital.
24:35She Rock, they call it.
24:37Chicago's homicide rate rose to 28 per 100,000 people in 2021.
24:42That makes it six times more dangerous than New York City or Austin, Texas.
24:47And a hundred times more dangerous than Tokyo, Japan.
24:50And it's not just numbers.
24:52Look at this map.
24:53These are all the murders that happened over the past 12 months.
24:56These are real people whose lives were cut short by some criminals.
25:00As you can see, most homicides happen on the west and the south sides.
25:03You'll see things in the news like 20 murders over the weekend and things like that.
25:09And yes, those are happening in the city of Chicago.
25:12They're happening here.
25:13What they don't typically say, or they sometimes say, is they're confined to a few areas on the south side and on the west side of the city.
25:22The far west side.
25:23So pretty far out of downtown.
25:25That's been a really serious problem in the city.
25:28But it's one that people like myself feel like we don't even experience.
25:33It feels very far away from us.
25:35I'm actually on the, I'm an officer on a nonprofit board here where we try to take those kids.
25:40A lot of them have a really difficult school situation.
25:43The public, the government schools that they have access to are really terrible.
25:47And we, we basically pay to send them to really good private schools where they can get a really good education.
25:53And so that's one of the things I do.
25:55But then other things I've done too are actually to go out and mentor and, and, and help the kids as well.
26:01Chicago is also the city with the highest number of carjackings.
26:04At least 1,400 carjackings took place in 2020.
26:07It's like Grand Theft Auto game in real life.
26:10That's why a lot of people here are hesitant to buy nice cars.
26:13No wonder residents are growing unhappy with mayor, lower lights, food performance and office.
26:18Well, let's sum it up.
26:21As the third largest city in the US, Chicago is ideal for those who want to live in a world class metropolitan area.
26:27From towering skyscrapers to the rich cultural landscape, it's easy to fall in love with the Windy City.
26:33It's cleaner and cheaper than New York.
26:35And it has a lot to offer as far as entertainment, job opportunities, a variety of restaurants and the world class central business district.
26:42At the same time, you gotta keep in mind that traffic is bad, crime levels are outrageous, and the tough winters make it a tough choice for anyone who can tolerate winter's hardships.
26:52And the high taxes is another tough pill to swallow.
