00:00i am recording this fair warning that really necessary look joe 63
00:11hello sir how you doing good how are you great great it's i'm so happy to be finally talking to
00:22you it feels weird to say that this is a period piece but it is what part of this time piece
00:27were you adamant in incorporating into the story i wanted to have the film be inflected by
00:35a truly modern realism which is another way of saying that all the characters in the movie are
00:41living in the internet it's about a bunch of people who are living in different realities
00:45and reachable to each other and that and that was the thing that was the most important to me i loved
00:51it this is what happens to a western if you dip it into the social media culture the fact that these
00:56people are siloed off and that they uh don't have access to each other and that they're living
01:02in totally different realities and the film is about what happens when people who have totally
01:08different information and they're they're stuck in a feedback loop the movie is about what happens when
01:14those people start bumping up against each other and what is the logic that comes out of that
01:19that that comes to grip them all yeah you know there's a saying in latin america it goes
01:24pueblo chico infierno grande which translates to small town big hell you know and i love it how
01:30this town is permeated by everything that afflicts a big city scaled down in numbers but the stakes
01:37are really higher because it's more personal wow what kind of research goes into building a world like
01:42that i think you you uh you hit on something there because it is about how the personal and the
01:49political get complicated how they merge especially in a small town where everybody is sort of plugged
01:55into global issues the world around them by the internet they're also living in a small world with
02:02each other and it's about a community of people that aren't a community at all and uh and so how did i do
02:08the research i actually started experimenting on twitter with starting different profiles burner
02:14profiles and i got myself into different algorithms and i saw what that attracted what kind of posts i was
02:20getting and then i tried to get out of the algorithm and i found that i couldn't no matter which
02:25algorithm i was in i couldn't escape from it i was stuck i scouted for locations with my team
02:32my crew and then i did a separate uh trip around new mexico where i was meeting with a bunch of
02:39sheriffs mayors police chiefs public officials all over new mexico in small towns uh interviewing them
02:46talking to them about their convictions their beliefs uh about their experience during covid and then
02:52certain people i found really really interesting and i went back out with joaquin and i introduced him
02:59to people that i found especially interesting now talking about your leading men uh please award on
03:05on both of them because i find both their characters and their acting styles are like really
03:11different and and they clash and merge and work it's like pedro glides and joaquin bites i don't know
03:18it's like very different it was great working with them they're both great actors very different
03:22actors but both obviously very talented i found that even though they were different and they have
03:27different methods they ended up really liking each other which isn't always the case you know and
03:32there's a real chemistry and rapport there joaquin is a very very committed actor who spends a lot of
03:39time in advance thinking about what he's doing finding what he's doing talking to me asking me
03:44questions and i've found that you know in that process it's it's more important to keep those
03:49questions alive than to answer them and then with pedro he's also very serious and really wants to talk
03:55about everything in advance but he's also he likes to not overthink things too much and to sort of just
04:01be in the be in the moment but he's great i i loved them both have you seen how some films big huge
04:08budget action films get turned into a ride at some amusement parks if there was to be an eddington
04:15ride how would it be like uh probably just be a giant phone
04:19and you'd have to scroll adrenaline filled
04:25and you wouldn't be able to get out the doors would be locked
04:31wow okay there's an idea for you thank you very much for your time i really enjoyed the film
04:38thank you thank you we need to free each other's hearts
