00:01:00I know it's not conventional, but Halloween always brought my family together growing up, more so than any other holiday.
00:01:08It was a father-son thing especially, and even though we haven't been together for many Halloweens, I still think of my dad each year.
00:01:15Between starting a family, moving away, and my career taking over, life just kind of happened.
00:01:22Hi, Daddy!
00:01:23Hi, sweetheart.
00:01:25Hi.
00:01:26Oh, my God, you're so big.
00:01:28Hi, buddy.
00:01:29Hi, JJ.
00:01:34What was that for?
00:01:37Just getting ready for Halloween, bud.
00:01:38Ah, my queen!
00:01:40I'm humbled by your presence, oh great beauty.
00:01:44Well, I just washed those pants.
00:01:46Oh, aye, aye.
00:01:47Oh, now you're interested in the real world.
00:01:59We've been at it all day.
00:02:01Well, you can't play just one game of Skelly.
00:02:03I don't really understand how it's played.
00:02:07What?
00:02:08Becca, come on.
00:02:09You're missing out.
00:02:11Okay, each player takes their cap and they place it on the starting point and it flips.
00:02:15All right, now the goal is to lay on each number in order, one, two, three, and so on,
00:02:20eventually getting on the 13th box with the skull mark.
00:02:24I didn't realize it was so simple.
00:02:26Well, I mean, more or less.
00:02:27There are, you know, other roles you can play by if you want.
00:02:30Grandpa would be pretty proud.
00:02:33Papa Dave, not so much.
00:02:38Did you check the mail today?
00:02:40Uh, yeah, something came.
00:02:42Something came?
00:02:44Yes.
00:02:44Is it red oak?
00:02:46Well, I don't know.
00:02:47I haven't opened it.
00:02:48Did you send your dad a copy?
00:02:49Yeah, I think it's supposed to arrive today.
00:02:53Are you ready to read it to them?
00:02:56Yeah, yeah.
00:02:57I mean, I put so much into this.
00:02:58I think it's time.
00:03:01Kids.
00:03:02Lucy.
00:03:03JJ.
00:03:04JJ.
00:03:05Charlie, let's go inside.
00:03:09Come on, buddy.
00:03:10There you go.
00:03:10Peppin' you step.
00:03:11That's a boy.
00:03:12Wait, is that it?
00:03:25Mm-hmm.
00:03:25You're...
00:03:26Wait, wait.
00:03:30Good.
00:03:32Kids, come downstairs when you're done.
00:03:34Your dad has a surprise for you.
00:03:36Hey, when are we going to put up the Halloween decorations?
00:03:39Well, is it a little too early for that?
00:03:41Never.
00:03:43Okay, we'll go get them.

00:04:08Can we see the surprise now?
00:04:18Oh, yeah.
00:04:20Gather round, children.
00:04:21Your father has accomplished a great feat,
00:04:24and now you must be subjected to the fruits of his labor.
00:04:28Wait, what kind of fruits? Apples?
00:04:30Obviously grapes.
00:04:31But I don't like grapes.
00:04:33Okay, just forget about the fruits, okay?
00:04:35So, what's the surprise?
00:04:37Well, it's a book that I wrote just for you guys and Papa Dave.
00:04:44We haven't seen Papa Dave in so long.
00:04:46Yeah, since last Christmas.
00:04:48Yeah, it has been a while.
00:04:50Well, maybe before this Christmas arrives,
00:04:52we can actually start reading the book.
00:04:55All right, all right.
00:05:00Many years ago, a boy named Jonah was getting excited for Halloween.
00:05:04Who's Jonah?
00:05:06Jonah is me.
00:05:08I thought your name was Daddy.
00:05:10Yeah, well, before I was called Daddy, I was mostly known as Jonah.
00:05:14Oh.
00:05:15Every year, Jonah, his dad, and his grandpa would make a haunted house
00:05:20with all the neighborhood kids for Halloween.
00:05:22This year would be their biggest build yet,
00:05:25so plans started early in the spring over breakfast.
00:05:27First, you break the egg for the omelet.
00:05:33First, you break the egg for the omelet.
00:05:38Cheese and peppers, peppers and onions.
00:05:41Jonah, Jonah, here is your omelet.
00:06:01Jonah, Jonah, here is your omelet.
00:06:04Eat very slowly, not too fast.
00:06:07Come on.
00:06:09Jonah, Jonah, here is your omelet.
00:06:13Enough about omelets.
00:06:14Just talk about the haunted house.
00:06:16Okay, okay.
00:06:19Later that year, those haunted house plans
00:06:21were being put into action by Jonah and his friends,
00:06:24with curly-haired Nate taking the lead.
00:06:26Let's get started.
00:06:56Let's get started.
00:07:26Let's get started.
00:07:27Let's get started.
00:07:28Let's get started.
00:07:29Let's get started.
00:07:30It won't turn!
00:07:31Oh, no way.
00:07:32This is not going to go up, bro.
00:07:33Leave it alone.
00:07:34Hold on.
00:07:35Kyle, it's going towards you.
00:07:37It's going towards you.
00:07:40Should we begin?
00:07:45So first, I just want to say that I'm really glad we're doing The Haunted House again this year.
00:07:50The Haunted House is seriously, like, my favorite part of last year.
00:07:54But that being said, I feel like we just need to make it a goal to outdo last year.
00:08:00That's going to be pretty hard. I mean, remember the car scene?
00:08:03Is your guys' dad going to be helping again?
00:08:06I think so.
00:08:07Because that would be a lot of help.
00:08:09All right, assuming their dad is on board, we got one idea so far.
00:08:13The guillotine.
00:08:14What's a guillotine?
00:08:15This machine is designed to cut.
00:08:17We'll get to that later.
00:08:21Which was actually a pretty good idea.
00:08:24Naturally.
00:08:25But that still leaves us with one idea, so we need to think of some more.
00:08:29Well, look who it is.
00:08:45How'd they ever let that guy be an exchange student?
00:09:05He probably lied on his application somehow.
00:09:08He had to have.
00:09:09There's no way he's a good student.
00:09:11The other day he asked me what state were we in.
00:09:14What's the foreign exchange student's name?
00:09:16Um, hmm.
00:09:17To be honest, I don't know.
00:09:19I don't think any of us knew how to pronounce it.
00:09:22Vlad.
00:09:23Vlad's.
00:09:24V-Laz.
00:09:24I don't know.
00:09:26It doesn't matter.
00:09:27What's he doing?
00:09:29Is he gonna smoke a cigarette?
00:09:32Of course.
00:09:33Whoa.
00:09:40Wait a second.
00:09:46Vlad's in the haunted house.
00:09:51He is terrifying in real life.
00:09:53All we would have to do is put a mask on him and just let him be a scary Danish self.
00:09:58I don't know.
00:09:58What if he beats up a kid?
00:10:00Because he would do that?
00:10:03True.
00:10:03He might beat up a kid in the heat of a moment.
00:10:06I think that's a risk we're gonna have to take.
00:10:10Okay.
00:10:11Everyone in favor for having the lads in the haunted house.
00:10:16Alright.
00:10:16Well, it's official.
00:10:18Some little kid's gonna have a heart attack this year.
00:10:23Hey, Vlad's.
00:10:29Yes, Dave?
00:10:33You got Halloween in Denmark?
00:10:35We do.
00:10:36But, um, we have Halloween.
00:10:39We celebrate that.
00:10:41You know, your traditions build over to my traditions.
00:10:44But we also have festive flower.
00:10:47Festive flower?
00:10:48Nope.
00:10:49Festive flower.
00:10:50Festive flower.
00:10:51Festive.
00:10:52I'll get it.
00:10:59What do you do for a festive lawn?
00:11:01You have bobbing for apples.
00:11:02We have sort of like bobbing for, it's called festive pollen.
00:11:06Bob down, you eat it without your hands, and if you win, you get money, you get candy.
00:11:10You get money?
00:11:11That sounds pretty American.
00:11:13You don't get much.
00:11:14It's not like big prize game, like, you know, $100,000, like all your game shows, but we have fun.
00:11:23It's a good time.
00:11:24Give me a favor.
00:11:25Hold that.
00:11:27Now follow me.
00:11:29Where are we going?
00:11:30We're gonna do some work.
00:11:32But I'm smoking.
00:11:33Bill-a-lots?
00:11:46Huh.
00:11:47Well, you left his door open, so he can't really blame us if we look around.
00:11:51Okay, back in Denmark, I'm sure these posters meant something.
00:12:00Oh.
00:12:02Are you Finnish?
00:12:04No, I'm Danish.
00:12:06I don't get it.
00:12:07I don't get it.
00:12:20Oh.
00:12:25Whoa.
00:12:26That looks pretty realistic.
00:12:31And I bet you they mulled it from someone's actual face.
00:12:36Probably.
00:12:37Hey.
00:12:40We could use this for the haunted house.
00:12:44Hmm.
00:12:46Aw, dude, we could use it for, like, a guillotine scene.
00:12:51That'd be awesome.
00:12:53And, I mean, it looks so real.
00:12:56Should we ask Bill-a-lots if we can use it?
00:12:59Well, then he'll know we were in his room.
00:13:02I wonder if he can get big blood.
00:13:04I'm working here, guys.
00:13:06Do you need something?
00:13:07We had an idea for the haunted house.
00:13:08We were in Vlad's room.
00:13:10He let us go in.
00:13:10Well, he didn't say we couldn't be there.
00:13:13Anyway, he gave us this.
00:13:14We were thinking we could use her for, like, a guillotine scene.
00:13:20You guys are crazy.
00:13:21You know that?
00:13:22Could you help us make it?
00:13:25I don't know.
00:13:26Jonah, I'm going to be really busy this fall.
00:13:31We'll see, okay?
00:13:32Jonah, I'm going to take this.
00:13:37Hello?
00:13:38The garage was cold and empty.
00:14:00Young Jonah had a lot of work to do without his dad or his grandpa.
00:14:04Why did Papa D not want to help?
00:14:08Well, he hadn't built anything for a while.
00:14:11Not since his last project.
00:14:13What was his last project?
00:14:15You guys obviously know the game Skelly, right?
00:14:18Yeah.
00:14:19My favorite game!
00:14:20That was a game that my grandpa, your great-grandpa, taught me and your uncle when we were young.
00:14:27Now, you have to use a little imagination here.
00:14:31Picture that you're in the middle of a narrow Brooklyn street.
00:14:34Cars parked on either side, surrounded by huge tenement buildings.
00:14:37Yeah, in the years 1930, newspaper costs a nickel,
00:14:41and there's a crazy new dance called the Foxtrot sweeping the nation.
00:14:44I do not need your sarcasm.
00:14:46Grandpa, what would you do when a car came down the street?
00:14:48Well, we'd pause the game, of course, and hope that the car hadn't hit anyone's pieces.
00:14:55What's in them?
00:14:56Wax and a penny.
00:14:59Those are regulation, Dad?
00:15:01Enough of you.
00:15:03Right.
00:15:04Let me show you how they work, okay?
00:15:10Not quite like that, but nearly like that.
00:15:12So, let me tell you about the time we was playing the game,
00:15:19and Dutch Schultz came down the street.
00:15:23You'll never guess how nimble his fingers were.
00:15:28Give me the pieces.
00:15:29Jesus Christ.
00:15:37I'm sorry.
00:15:42I don't even know.
00:15:50I don't know.
00:18:36Well, first of all, Dad, it's not my dorm room. I live in a house.
00:18:40But, yes, actually, I did think that something smoother would work a little bit better, so I made those.
00:18:46Mm-hmm.
00:18:47Mm-hmm.
00:18:48You want to see?
00:18:50Mm-hmm.
00:18:51Sure.
00:18:52It's round. It's all wrong. It's round. It shouldn't be round.
00:18:59Well, I mean, that's the part of the problem we ran into with the first prototype. The pieces were getting stuck in the corners. But now, look, you can do this.
00:19:08Oh. Oh, that's neat. So what do you think, Jonah? Would you play this game?
00:19:16Yeah, it's pretty fun.
00:19:17Yeah, it's pretty fun.
00:19:18Well, my grandson likes it, and then clearly it has potential.
00:19:25You okay, Dad? Are you sure? I even made another set of legs for it. You can take them off, and they're shorter. You can sit on a table.
00:19:48It's wonderful, David.
00:19:54I made it for you, Dad.
00:19:58Is that the last time you saw your grandpa?
00:20:02Yeah, it was.
00:20:04That's why my dad, Papa Dave, had such a hard time building things.
00:20:11It only reminded him of his last gift to Grandpa.
00:20:18Without the help of his dad, Jonah and his friends started visiting other haunted houses to get ideas for their own.
00:20:27Let's see you on this, coach.
00:20:32Super excited.
00:20:34But...
00:20:37Alright.
00:20:39Remember, guys, this is reconnaissance, so we want to see what works and what doesn't in the haunted house.
00:20:43First mistake? Fake skeleton missing its head.
00:20:46I thought it was supposed to be like that.
00:20:48Oh, like, uh...
00:20:50Ichabod Crane.
00:20:51Right.
00:20:52But then, why would it be a skeleton? It's like mixing two different things.
00:20:55Maybe the wind blew it off or somebody bumped into it.
00:21:00I think the fact that we don't know if it's supposed to be that way or not says it all.
00:21:04True.
00:21:10Halloween was only a few weeks away, so Jonah got to building on his own.
00:21:15He couldn't help but worry that without the help of his dad, the haunted house would be a dud.
00:21:19After all, everyone was having a hard time without Grandpa.
00:21:30Mom was a preacher, and the stories she told always gave a way of giving us the comfort and guidance we needed.
00:21:36In spiritual experiences in many religions, the revelation that sweetens life, that brings peace, is surely that despite our fully recognized limitations, brokenness, sinfulness, culpability, suffering, we are yet one, beloved, belonging, at one with the universe.
00:21:57Whether we experience this bliss as redemption, salvation, or as the unifying spirit of life, or as nirvana, or however, this experience of oneness is joyful transformations that reconnect us with our spiritual path.
00:22:12Now we extinguish this flame, but not the light of truth, the warmth of community, or the fire of commitment.
00:22:23These we carry in our hearts until we are together again.
00:22:30That was nice.
00:22:32Now, you know, me, I never smoke cigarettes.
00:22:36You know, I mean, think about it.
00:22:38Cigar-ettes.
00:22:39It's the feminine egg.
00:22:41I'm just going to smoke cigars.
00:22:45Now that is pizza dough.
00:22:48How are we looking? Is the sauce ready?
00:22:50Just about.
00:22:52Oh, oh, no, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:22:54Not so much.
00:22:55A little.
00:22:56I only put a little.
00:22:58You always put too much. Here.
00:22:59No, I don't.
00:23:00Okay, come on.
00:23:01Here we go.
00:23:05That, that's something.
00:23:07Alright, here we go.
00:23:09Pizza time.
00:23:10Ready?
00:23:11Mm-hmm.
00:23:12Let's do this.
00:23:14Okay.
00:23:15Start with the sauce.
00:23:17You do that.
00:23:18Yeah.
00:23:19Go ahead.
00:23:20Alright, get the toppings.
00:23:21Start with the cheese.
00:23:23Look at this.
00:23:24Here you go.
00:23:25Oh, wait, hold on.
00:23:26Wait.
00:23:27Don't put the cheese on yet.
00:23:28Let me do this.
00:23:29Let me do my sauce work.
00:23:30Let me do my sauce work really quick.
00:23:32Alright.
00:23:33Oh, cheese.
00:23:34Wait for the cheese.
00:23:35You're the cheese man.
00:23:36Crazy for cheese.
00:23:37Hold on for a second.
00:23:38Let me get this going.
00:23:39Alright?
00:23:40I know what I'm doing.
00:23:41I've made, I've done this before.
00:23:42You're, you're a little rookie-ish if I do say so myself.
00:23:47Alright.
00:23:48Hold on.
00:23:49You know just on one, you, one half.
00:23:51One half.
00:23:52Okay?
00:23:53Sausage freak.
00:23:54This is, it's gonna get crazy up in here.
00:23:56So.
00:23:57This is sausage?
00:23:58That is sausage.
00:23:59And you know that I don't like sausage.
00:24:00So, let's, let's be easy with it.
00:24:03Do you ever wonder what it would be like to just live in the woods?
00:24:19You know, like, if you didn't have a house to stay in or anything, and you had to survive
00:24:26on your own in the wilderness.
00:24:27Do you ever wonder stuff like that?
00:24:30Yeah.
00:24:31Like, we're so used to living in houses and getting our food from the grocery store that
00:24:37you never even think about it, but you know, it could happen.
00:24:40You'd have to catch your own food for one thing.
00:24:43Yeah.
00:24:44Exactly.
00:24:45So, it'd probably be important not to accidentally step on your sister's fishing pole ruining
00:24:52your only chance of survival.
00:24:53That was you.
00:24:54How many times have we been through this?
00:24:56I was 15 feet away when I heard that snap.
00:24:58I was 15 feet away when I heard it.
00:25:00I was untangling my line from the tree.
00:25:01I remember.
00:25:02Oh, wow.
00:25:03You heard it because it was right under your feet.
00:25:05Think about it.
00:25:06How could you have heard it if you were 15 feet away?
00:25:08Yes, and that's what you said too.
00:25:10Fine.
00:25:11Fine.
00:25:12It's clear that we're not going to settle this tonight, so let's just agree to disagree.
00:25:16Fine.
00:25:23You broke a sister's fishing pole.
00:25:27Oh!
00:25:28Oh, no!
00:25:29Please!
00:25:30Stop!
00:25:31Fine!
00:25:32Fine!
00:25:33Fine!
00:25:34Truce!
00:25:35Truce!
00:25:36Truce!
00:25:37You know, 25 years from now, we're still going to be arguing about this.
00:25:52Yep.
00:25:55Goodnight.
00:25:56Goodnight.
00:25:57Do you ever think about death?
00:26:13Kids!
00:26:14Dinner's ready.
00:26:15Dinner's ready!
00:26:16Dinner's ready!
00:26:17Dinner's ready!
00:26:18What?
00:26:19I'll get them.
00:26:20I'll get them.
00:26:21I don't know, Jonah.
00:26:22Do you think this is all a little...
00:26:23I don't know, Jonah.
00:26:24Do you think this is all a little...
00:26:25I don't know, Jonah.
00:26:26Do you think this is all a little heavy for them?
00:26:27Hmm.
00:26:28Kids are smart.
00:26:29You'd be surprised what they pick up on.
00:26:30I don't know, Jonah.
00:26:31Do you think this is all a little heavy for them?
00:26:32Hmm.
00:26:33Kids are smart.
00:26:34You'd be surprised what they pick up on.
00:26:35After all, I learned my mother's teachings.
00:26:37I don't know, Jonah.
00:26:38Do you think this is all a little heavy for them?
00:26:41Hmm.
00:26:42Kids are smart.
00:26:43You'd be surprised what they pick up on.
00:26:44After all, I learned my mother's teachings.
00:26:47And even if they don't, the doctor said that I need this.
00:26:51Your doctor?
00:26:52You've only seen a dermatologist this year.
00:26:54The largest organ in your body and mine was calling for help.
00:26:56Yeah.
00:26:57Yeah.
00:26:58Yeah.
00:26:59Yeah.
00:27:00Yeah.
00:27:01Yeah.
00:27:02Yeah.
00:27:03Yeah.
00:27:04Yeah.
00:27:05Yeah.
00:27:06Yeah.
00:27:07Yeah.
00:27:08Yeah.
00:27:09Yeah.
00:27:10Yeah.
00:27:11Yeah.
00:27:12Yeah.
00:27:13Yeah.
00:27:14Yeah.
00:27:15Yeah.
00:27:16Hey.
00:27:17Hey.
00:27:18Long day?
00:27:19Yeah.
00:27:20Just, uh, this project deadline.
00:27:21There was a miscommunication early on and now we're all scrambling to find out where
00:27:38it started.
00:27:39But, uh, that's life.
00:27:42How's the sermon?
00:27:43It's coming along.
00:27:44Okay.
00:27:45Yeah.
00:27:46Remind me what it's about again?
00:27:47Grief.
00:27:48But it's gonna be uplifting.
00:27:49Sounds like a real crowd pleaser.
00:27:50Well, I think the mistake that people make is thinking that we get through grief.
00:27:51Right?
00:27:52Like we, we move beyond it and it's behind us.
00:27:55When really we're always kind of going through grief.
00:27:57I already feel uplifted.
00:27:58It doesn't have to be so depressing.
00:27:59You know?
00:28:00It's like, yes, we are always experiencing loss from the day we're born.
00:28:04And at times, that loss can feel greater than others.
00:28:05As you're experiencing right now with your father's passing.
00:28:11And though we can't.
00:28:12And though we can't.
00:28:13avoid loss.
00:28:14And though we can't.
00:28:15avoid loss.
00:28:16Or the pain in our face.
00:28:17It's okay.
00:28:18It's okay.
00:28:19We don't have to be so depressing.
00:28:20You know?
00:28:21It's like, yes, we are always experiencing loss from the day we're born.
00:28:23And at times, that loss can feel greater than others.
00:28:26As you're experiencing right now with your father's passing.
00:28:30And though we can't avoid loss or the pain it causes, you know, if we're open to the
00:28:50possibility, we can experience an equally strong, though more elusive, emotion, catharsis.
00:29:00Unfortunately, one cannot be experienced without the other.
00:29:08Oh, Dave.
00:29:12Dad?
00:29:30I thought you said this was a Halloween story about haunted house.
00:29:33Well, don't forget, it's about love and loss, too.
00:29:39Mom's next sermon was very special.
00:29:42A man is on his deathbed, and his family is gathered around.
00:29:46His son says, Papa, is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable?
00:29:51I stole this from Billy Crystal, by the way.
00:29:53I want to taste Mom's chopped liver just once more before I die, the father replies.
00:29:58Please, some chopped liver.
00:30:00Okay, Pop, the son says, and he goes into the kitchen.
00:30:03A few moments later, he comes back.
00:30:05Do you have the liver?
00:30:06The dad asks.
00:30:07Death and life, so intertwined in our experience.
00:30:18But the good stuff doesn't have to only be for after.
00:30:21In Ecclesiastes, Solomon asks the big question.
00:30:25What is the point of life under the sun?
00:30:27Now, he was kind of in an existential funk at the time.
00:30:31In fact, he begins Ecclesiastes by repeating the word meaningless over and over.
00:30:35Everything is meaningless.
00:30:37What is the point of life, he wonders, when we are at the mercy of circumstance?
00:30:42When tragedy and hardship can come unexpectedly?
00:30:46When so much of what we do seems so futile?
00:30:49Solomon did not shy away from asking these challenging questions, and he urged others
00:30:55not to shy away from them either, but instead to embrace the fact that life can be frustrating
00:31:01at times, confusing, unfair, and downright painful.
00:31:06He was a realist.
00:31:08But in the face of this chaos, what does he suggest?
00:31:14To enjoy life.
00:31:16Yes, Solomon said, and he's said it many times,
00:31:19enjoy life.
00:31:22What an audacious suggestion.
00:31:24Have that chopped liver now.
00:31:26Don't save it for later.
00:31:27Enjoy that sunset instead of continuing to work into the evening.
00:31:32Go out dancing.
00:31:33Laugh.
00:31:33Eat good food.
00:31:35All within moderation, of course.
00:31:36He wasn't advocating gluttony or hedonism or laziness or anything like that.
00:31:41Just enjoyment.
00:31:43Now, he does acknowledge that this way of living, holding such a large contradiction, can pose
00:31:52as a challenge to know that you will face tragedy in your life, that you will lose loved
00:31:59ones, that everything you create will one day be destroyed.
00:32:02To accept all of this and still choose simply to enjoy life, it is a challenge.
00:32:11But in the end, it's a challenge worth taking.
00:32:16Is this where the story gets happier?
00:32:18Although the kids were still missing Dad's help and advice, they could always count on
00:32:26Uncle Glenn's quirky philosophies.
00:32:28Well, maybe if we, I don't know, I don't know.
00:32:34This is impossible.
00:32:36It's just, if, I got nothing.
00:32:39How, it's, yeah, it's impossible.
00:32:41Hello, boys.
00:32:43What's going on?
00:32:45A little meeting of the minds?
00:32:47We're trying to hit the hoop so the marker cap falls in the bottle.
00:32:51That's impossible.
00:32:52I don't know how we did it.
00:32:53V-Lad showed it to us.
00:32:55Can I see?
00:32:58Can I try?
00:33:01Sure.
00:33:04So, what are you guys doing up so late on a school night?
00:33:09Is this a little late?
00:33:11Well, we have tomorrow off for parent meetings.
00:33:14Parent meetings?
00:33:16What's that about?
00:33:17It sounds lame.
00:33:18Where the teachers all go to Six Flags?
00:33:20I mean, I ain't complaining.
00:33:22Yeah?
00:33:23I wouldn't complain either.
00:33:25Now, you've got to understand about this.
00:33:28Is that you're being deceived by your own perceptions.
00:33:33Okay?
00:33:34Your mind is telling you one thing.
00:33:36But reality is slightly different.
00:33:40What you need to do
00:33:41is turn off your caveman brain.
00:33:47Huh?
00:33:48And start to see what is actually in front of you.
00:33:52Good day, gentlemen.
00:34:02Oh, Uncle Glenn.
00:34:04He's always giving the most interesting, yet random advice.
00:34:09He is known for that.
00:34:11Uncle Glenn is so smart.
00:34:13Do you even understand what he meant?
00:34:14Yeah.
00:34:15He meant that you can't view your life and the universe through a narrow lens.
00:34:19To accomplish your goals, you have to think outside of the box,
00:34:21rather than being clouded into superficiality.
00:34:24At least that's what he told me on Fourth of July
00:34:26before you lose pants on fire on fireworks.
00:34:31That's Uncle Glenn for you.
00:34:32Anyways, although Jonah appreciated his uncle's insight,
00:34:38it still couldn't replace his dad's guidance.
00:34:41No offense to Uncle Glenn,
00:34:42but Jonah needed more than bottle tricks to lift up his spirits.
00:34:46Meanwhile, Dad was starting to realize
00:34:51that it's important to cherish the time you have with the people you love,
00:34:55especially in difficult times.
00:35:01So, Dad got to work once again.
00:35:03I personally think it should be Ned's head.
00:35:21Looks the most like the dummies.
00:35:23Oh, thanks.
00:35:25Let's see.
00:35:29I can see it.
00:35:31The only problem is the hair.
00:35:33Could you shake your head, dude?
00:35:35Oh, what if they were both wearing a bandana?
00:35:40Hey, Dave.
00:35:41Hey, Dave.
00:35:41Hey, guys.
00:35:42Oh, how's the board working?
00:35:43It's really nice.
00:35:44Really smooth.
00:35:45Good, yeah.
00:35:46I put an extra layer of oil on it.
00:35:47I think that really helped.
00:35:49Definitely.
00:35:51So, I was, uh, you know,
00:35:52I was thinking last night about that guillotine scene,
00:35:55how you guys could do it.
00:35:55Hey, we were just talking about that.
00:35:57Oh.
00:35:58Oh, okay.
00:35:59I mean, if you guys already have an idea, that's...
00:36:00No, no, no.
00:36:01We want to hear your idea.
00:36:03Can I draw here?
00:36:04Go ahead.
00:36:04Okay.
00:36:05So, what I was thinking is,
00:36:06we're going to make a guillotine, right?
00:36:09It's going to look just like any other guillotine, right?
00:36:12But then, what we're going to do is we're going to take a door.
00:36:15We're going to put six inches in front of the guillotine.
00:36:17That way, whoever's head is actually sticking out of the guillotine...
00:36:21Ned.
00:36:22Ned.
00:36:22Ned can pull his head out before the blade falls.
00:36:26And there's going to be an actual blade?
00:36:28Well, it's going to be Luan.
00:36:29But we're going to spray paint it.
00:36:30I mean, this will look just like real metal.
00:36:32So, we actually want to show the blade falling.
00:36:35Yeah, right.
00:36:35But you are going to hear it.
00:36:36I mean, it's going to be loud.
00:36:37Like, really loud.
00:36:39And then, what I was thinking is, you know,
00:36:41when the door opens and closes,
00:36:42when we open it,
00:36:43the head's going to fall out.
00:36:45So, what I'm going to do
00:36:45is I'm going to take that head you guys stole from Vlad's.
00:36:48I'm going to hollow it out,
00:36:49fill it up with concrete.
00:36:51That way, when it hits the ground,
00:36:52it's going to make a huge thud.
00:36:56Yeah.
00:36:56Yes.
00:36:57That's pretty good.
00:36:58Only your dad would think about
00:36:59filling a fake head with concrete for a haunted house.
00:37:02Yeah.
00:37:02Now, I can't start it, like, right away,
00:37:04but I think I should get some time next week.
00:37:06In the meantime,
00:37:08we've got to start thinking of some other ideas.
00:37:10We should start meeting at least twice a week going forward now.
00:37:12I'll make a schedule.
00:37:13Oh, you guys are crazy.
00:37:14You know that?
00:37:15Yeah, but you love it.
00:37:16I think this is going to work.
00:37:18I can see it.
00:37:20I can see it.
00:37:50I can see it.
00:37:51I can see it.
00:37:52I can see it.
00:37:53I can see it.
00:37:54I can see it.
00:37:55I can see it.
00:37:56I can see it.
00:37:57I can see it.
00:37:58I can see it.
00:37:59I can see it.
00:38:00I can see it.
00:38:01I can see it.
00:38:02I can see it.
00:38:03I can see it.
00:38:04I can see it.
00:38:05I can see it.
00:38:06I can see it.
00:38:07I can see it.
00:38:08I can see it.
00:38:09I can see it.
00:38:10I can see it.
00:38:11I can see it.
00:38:12I can see it.
00:38:13I can see it.
00:38:14I can see it.
00:38:15I can see it.
00:38:16I can see it.
00:38:17Oh
00:38:47Oh
00:39:17Oh
00:39:42Well, where were you guys while he was building?
00:39:45We were busy brainstorming
00:39:47What's a brainstorm?
00:39:48It's when brains fall from the sky
00:39:50No, no, it's not
00:39:52It's Charlie, it is not
00:39:54Yes, it is
00:39:55Brainstorming is when
00:39:57is when you think really hard with a group of people
00:40:02using your brains
00:40:04Oh, okay
00:40:06Anyways, while dad was outside building things
00:40:10the kids were inside brainstorming after visiting other haunted houses
00:40:15I just feel like
00:40:18Yes
00:40:20We could create the same illusions that that haunted house had if we had hundreds of dollars to work with
00:40:24But we don't, so it's not a fair comparison
00:40:26Whatever, I'm glad we don't
00:40:28I'm glad we don't
00:40:29Everything in theirs was so store-bought, it wasn't even original
00:40:33Exactly, we're building our scenes from scratch
00:40:35Well, Dave's doing a lot of the actual building
00:40:38Yeah, but we're coming up with the ideas and making them unique
00:40:43But true, we owe a lot to Dave
00:40:47I just feel like
00:40:48There's so many haunted houses out there that aren't even worth the price of admission
00:40:52You know what I mean?
00:40:53They're not scary, they're not original
00:40:56They're just this cliche experience and we just accept that
00:40:59No one questions it
00:41:02Oh, another haunted house
00:41:04I wonder what's gonna happen when they pop open the crypt
00:41:06Is a dummy gonna pop out?
00:41:08Oh, didn't see that one coming
00:41:10They're all made by adults
00:41:12Exactly, and who should be making the haunted houses?
00:41:17Guys, this is the perfect opportunity to do something that hasn't been done before
00:41:22Build a haunted house that's actually scary
00:41:26That's actually gonna make kids pee their pants
00:41:31We can't mess this up
00:41:34Have you guys ever thought about doing something with snakes?
00:41:36I always thought that would make a good scene, you know?
00:41:40I don't know how it would work really
00:41:42Maybe you could like have the snakes fall down from the ceiling on top of everyone
00:41:46It's actually a good idea, Suzanne
00:41:49Hey, I got ideas
00:41:53Hey guys, you guys want to see something?
00:41:56Come on, I want to show you something
00:41:57Come on, let's go
00:41:58All right, that's gonna be good
00:42:00Hey, what are you doing?
00:42:01In there?
00:42:02It has to be crazy
00:42:04Oh, this has to be crazy
00:42:08Come on
00:42:11Check out
00:42:14Whoa
00:42:14Hey
00:42:16The plate looks awesome
00:42:17Oh, thanks, yeah
00:42:17It's got a nice metallic sheen to it
00:42:20Oh, but check this out
00:42:22Now, it was a little touch and go at first
00:42:26But I was able to hollow out this head
00:42:28Fill it with concrete
00:42:28Here, be careful
00:42:33Whoa
00:42:33Yeah, pass it around
00:42:38Geez
00:42:38That's awesome
00:42:45Wow
00:42:47Yeah
00:42:50What do you think?
00:42:51That's got some weight to it
00:42:53Yeah
00:42:54Try dropping it
00:42:55Not too high
00:42:58Oh
00:43:02That's crazy
00:43:03Yeah
00:43:03So you guys, uh
00:43:05You want to see the gear thing?
00:43:07Yeah
00:43:07All right, come on
00:43:21All right, all right, listen up
00:43:23I want you guys to understand something
00:43:25If you are not very careful with this thing
00:43:29It can actually hurt you
00:43:31Got it?
00:43:31Mm-hmm
00:43:33Okay
00:43:34Now, obviously, I haven't put the door on yet
00:43:36And I'm thinking we're going to get a basket down there to catch the head
00:43:40But this is the basic structure
00:43:42How long did this take you?
00:43:45I don't know
00:43:47Most of the time was spent up here
00:43:49I'd say about four or five hours actually building
00:43:52Plus getting materials
00:43:55Where'd you get the wood?
00:43:57Don't worry about that, Nate
00:44:00Now I was having a lot of trouble with this blade
00:44:02It wasn't falling straight because Luan likes to warp
00:44:05Especially this time of year
00:44:06So I was able to offset that by attaching this strip here
00:44:09Plus
00:44:09It gives us a nice ledge to lift it
00:44:15When we reset it
00:44:18This is the safety
00:44:19Okay
00:44:19You have to engage this when we're resetting
00:44:22Got it?
00:44:23Safety's on
00:44:24Now the blade actually gets held in place by a peg that's in the back
00:44:28That's uh
00:44:31If it lines up
00:44:32Got it
00:44:33Now turn the safety off
00:44:38Now this thing is live
00:44:40Okay
00:44:47You guys ready?
00:44:49Yeah
00:44:49It's so cool, bro
00:44:57Now I was thinking it'd be awesome if we could actually show that
00:44:59But I don't think it's possible with somebody's head actually sticking out
00:45:03Right?
00:45:04That is where the door comes in
00:45:07I have a question
00:45:08Yeah
00:45:09And this
00:45:11This is awesome
00:45:12This is so much cooler than I was even picturing
00:45:14Thank you
00:45:16But why is the hole in the middle shaped like a puzzle piece?
00:45:19Yeah, I was wondering about that too
00:45:22Oh
00:45:23Oh, you guys want to know how it's actually going to work?
00:45:26Okay
00:45:27That's a fair question
00:45:29Let me get the collar and I'll show you
00:45:31Dad's insane
00:45:33Yeah
00:45:35This is going to be cool though
00:45:37Yep
00:45:39Yes, I'm in
00:45:40I'm totally in
00:45:41I'm honored they thought of me at all
00:45:43It's exactly the kind of thing I used to be in when I was a little kid
00:45:48Eat it
00:45:49Yeah
00:45:53All right
00:45:57Yeah, I'll see what I have lying around
00:46:00Actually, you know what?
00:46:02I got a costume designer friend at Shakespeare and Company
00:46:04I'm just going to
00:46:07Oh no
00:46:09The executioner has got to have the right costume
00:46:15All right
00:46:18Okay, Bubba
00:46:20Yeah, yeah, yeah
00:46:21I look forward to it
00:46:23See you then
00:46:25Bye
00:46:26Push, push, push
00:46:29Good job, boys
00:46:30Yeah, I'll get the top of the bar
00:46:31All right
00:46:31Hold it there
00:46:38Dude, that's enough
00:46:40So wait, the dummy's going to be wearing the same outfit as Valad's
00:46:50Yeah, then it's like which one's the real one
00:46:52Got it now
00:46:59Push, push, push, push, push
00:47:00What do you see?
00:47:03Blood
00:47:06Oh, blood, blood
00:47:08Come here
00:47:12Is that a realistic amount of blood?
00:47:14Um, you know, I could bring it out a little bit more
00:47:28All right, what is this thing being used for again?
00:47:30We didn't exactly think of a specific idea
00:47:36After the group sees the snakes, they're still going to get by, right?
00:47:38So
00:47:42And that screw stops it falling off
00:47:43That's pretty cool
00:47:44Yeah, yeah, now we just need to get some snakes
00:47:47Oh, and a branch
00:47:49And a branch
00:47:58That's the one
00:47:59Yeah, but how are we going to get to it?
00:48:03What are you talking about?
00:48:04I thought there's only one thing to do
00:48:07You're not going to sweat, right?
00:48:09We should have just brought bathing suits
00:48:11It would be so much easier
00:48:12No, we don't need bathing suits
00:48:18I don't know
00:48:21It's going to be easy
00:48:29Oh, yeah
00:48:36Woo!
00:48:36Yeah
00:48:37Come on in, guys
00:48:38The water's nice
00:48:39No way
00:48:40That's cold
00:48:41Woo!
00:48:42Woo!
00:48:50Come on, get in the water.
00:49:01Okay, well, one of you guys can cut this.
00:49:07Cut that part.
00:49:08There we go.
00:49:11Nice.
00:49:16Okay, uh, staple gun.
00:49:35Okay, let me go through here.
00:49:38All right.
00:49:39I think we're ready for a test drive.
00:49:51Oh, man.
00:49:52That's so cool.
00:49:53Yeah, does it look good?
00:49:54Yeah.
00:49:55It looks really good.
00:49:56Yeah.
00:49:57It looks really good.
00:49:59Good.
00:50:00Okay, so then what we would do is we would turn the lights off and then we will...
00:50:02Oh, that's so good.
00:50:03Oh, wait, it moves?
00:50:04Yeah, yeah, I put it in the track.
00:50:05I actually got an idea.
00:50:06What if something happens after the lights go out?
00:50:07Like what?
00:50:08Like what?
00:50:09Like what?
00:50:10Like, oh, I don't know.
00:50:11Maybe if there was some way to make it feel like there were snakes on the floor, for instance.
00:50:13Oh, my God.
00:50:14Oh, my God.
00:50:15Yeah.
00:50:16If I felt snakes on the floor at the scene, I would piss my pants.
00:50:17No, that'd be awesome, though, because it's like they see the branch and then the lights
00:50:18go out and then they think it's over.
00:50:19And then that's when we hit them with...
00:50:20Real snakes.
00:50:21Yeah.
00:50:22Oh, wow.
00:50:23Wow.
00:50:24Wow.
00:50:25Wow.
00:50:26Wow.
00:50:27Wow.
00:50:28Wow.
00:50:29Wow.
00:50:30Wow.
00:50:31Wow.
00:50:32Wow.
00:50:33Wow.
00:50:34Wow.
00:50:35Wow.
00:50:36Wow.
00:50:37Wow.
00:50:38Wow.
00:50:39Wow.
00:50:40Wow.
00:50:41Wow.
00:50:42Wow.
00:50:43Wow.
00:50:44Wow.
00:50:45Wow.
00:50:46Wow.
00:50:47But no, they're not bringing real snakes in here.
00:50:49Come on.
00:50:50Just like gardener snakes.
00:50:52No chance.
00:50:54Fine.
00:50:55But we still need something to happen after the lights go out.
00:50:59Why isn't the branch enough on its own?
00:51:01You gotta hit them when they're most vulnerable.
00:51:03Yeah.
00:51:04Yeah.
00:51:05Yeah.
00:51:06Oh, Spud, so your plan is just to torture your audience to death?
00:51:10Yeah.
00:51:11Yeah.
00:51:12That's good.
00:51:13Yeah.
00:51:14We're gonna have to put up a disclaimer or I'm going to get sued.
00:51:16to get sued. It's pretty good though. Alright? I want a pet snake. You'll have to ask your
00:51:26mother about that one. Oh no. No, no. No snakes. Alright buddy, we're gonna go to four and a
00:51:36half. Jonah and his dad were finally spending time together again. Okay, good enough. You're
00:51:43welcome. Nice line buddy. Okay, now we can talk about making another one of those. Well
00:52:05hold on, let's think about this. People have been coming in what groups of like five or
00:52:09six, right? Yeah, that's what they were last year. Okay. Five or six people in a narrow
00:52:14hallway. They're gonna be grouped in twos, but they're gonna be bunched together
00:52:18because they're gonna be scared, right? So, maybe we'll do two dowels and we'll just
00:52:24put them this far apart. Let's do it. Alright. In the air to Cruyff. He chests it down. He
00:52:30shoots. Goal! Grab it. Pass. Nice one. He goes to the forward. The forward passes back. Come on.
00:52:42He gets it. Oh. Are you right bud? We're out. Huh. We can take a break.
00:52:48Oh. Oh. You know, you played a really good game on Sunday. You, uh, I think you're really
00:52:56coming into your own in the midfield. Thanks. No, in midfield's not an easy position, buddy. I mean,
00:53:01you gotta see the whole field at the same time. How can I see behind me? That's a good point.
00:53:07No, it's just, you know, your team's, they're really thrilling to watch. I mean, you guys are
00:53:11playing like a, like a much older team. Like 14 year olds? Yeah, I guess so. If you need me to put a
00:53:18number on it, 14 year olds. No, but it's just that you know what makes soccer such a beautiful game
00:53:23is that it doesn't matter. If you have a team that plays together and they play in sync and they play
00:53:30intelligently the way you guys are playing, then they're going to beat a team with better
00:53:33individuals hands down. I mean, that's what makes it so beautiful. It's just such a, such a collective
00:53:38sport. Teamwork really does make the dream work. And if this haunted house was to be a success,
00:53:44they need a lot of it. Wait, when is this haunted house going to be? We decided on next Thursday.
00:53:52You mean Halloween? Yeah, Halloween. It starts at eight, but there's probably going to be a line,
00:53:57so you might want to get here a little early. Is this like actually going to be scary? Yep.
00:54:03We're actually thinking and putting a disclaimer. Oh, is that right? In the end, it's all about the
00:54:08kids having a good time and we just want to make sure everyone feels safe. All right. Thanks,
00:54:12man. I'll get it back to you after school tomorrow. Yeah, no problem. So you think you guys can make
00:54:17it? We'll see. Remember, next Thursday. Eight o'clock.
00:54:23It's the kids. Did you guys make announcements in your classes yet? Yeah. Man, everybody's talking
00:54:44about it. It's going to be a really big turnout. Dude, it's definitely going to be a big turnout.
00:54:48Is it just me or does the haunted house feel so much more substantial this year?
00:54:53No, I know what you mean. We made a real haunted house.
00:54:59Time flies when you're building a haunted house and quicker than a game of Scully.
00:55:04Halloween was just one day away.
00:55:06Oh, you know, this is the easy part. Getting Nate up in that thing tomorrow, that's going
00:55:12to be a challenge. Yeah.
00:55:16All right. We should test it, huh?
00:55:19Yeah. I think that's going to hold him.
00:55:28What do you think? You think we're ready?
00:55:30Yep. That pretty much says it. Well, you can't reschedule Halloween's tomorrow.
00:55:39It'll be good. Yeah, I think so, too. As long as nobody loses their head.
00:55:45Well, also, that kind of needs to happen.
00:55:48You're right. You're right. We are kind of depending on that, aren't we?
00:55:53No, it's going to be good. You guys came up with a lot of good illusions this year.
00:55:56Oh, I wish your grandpa was here to see it.
00:56:01You always love these haunted houses.
00:56:07You coming?
00:56:12Yeah, I'll be in soon.
00:56:14Okay.
00:56:16The haunted house had come a long way from the cold, empty garage it was just a few weeks ago,
00:56:20but it still wasn't done yet.
00:56:23Part of Jonah was a bit worried they wouldn't finish on time.
00:56:27Either way, he still wished Grandpa was there to see it.
00:56:30After all, it was impressive what the group had accomplished.
00:56:34Well, would you guys be able to finish?
00:56:37Be patient and you'll find out.
00:56:42It was the day of Halloween.
00:56:45Dude, this has to be perfect. You don't understand.
00:56:58Look, if we think of a plan, everything should be okay. I'm not...
00:57:01Listen, everybody should just be on their P's and Q's and...
00:57:04Hi, girls.
00:57:05You ready for the night, Villats?
00:57:10Uh, yeah.
00:57:11But I think I lost my crown.
00:57:13Seriously?
00:57:14I'll look for it. Don't worry.
00:57:16All right, well, can you be ready in the barn in an hour for rehearsal?
00:57:19Sure, sure.
00:57:21Hey.
00:57:26Pretty good, right?
00:57:26All right, let's head inside, guys.
00:57:30All right.
00:57:30Let's go.
00:57:35All right, guys. This is it.
00:57:40We only have a few hours until trick-or-treating begins, and we have a lot of work to do.
00:57:46First and foremost, we need to...
00:57:51We decided you guys probably need our help.
00:57:56Yeah.
00:57:57They'll definitely need our help.
00:57:59Oh, I hope you don't mind.
00:58:00I bought some of my mom's paramedic supplies.
00:58:03I don't mind.
00:58:05I don't mind either.
00:58:07Where have you guys been?
00:58:09We've been here.
00:58:10All right.
00:58:11Well, welcome aboard.
00:58:20All right.
00:58:21We only have an hour, and we still have a lot of things to do.
00:58:25Ned, you and Ian are practicing the guillotine scene.
00:58:28Fine.
00:58:28Just do it as many times as possible.
00:58:31You want it to be like second nature by tonight.
00:58:34Jonah and Kelvin, you guys are recording the snake sounds.
00:58:37Nice.
00:58:38Make sure the audio sounds good.
00:58:39Not like the tape we recorded last year.
00:58:42Right.
00:58:43Brendan and Alex, you guys are setting up the torture room.
00:58:46Affirmative.
00:58:47And then Kyle and Asher, Liza, Caitlin, and Abby, you guys are going to set up the hospital scene.
00:58:53Got it.
00:58:54The challenge is ours.
00:58:56The way I see it, this is going to be a pretty cool haunted house no matter what.
00:59:03But I'm not satisfied with pretty cool.
00:59:06We stand together on the precipice.
00:59:09Now, if you're not up for the challenge, speak up now.
00:59:11No one will think any less of you.
00:59:17All right.
00:59:19Let's be ready in an hour.
00:59:23Hey, Dave.
00:59:24Oh, just a sec, guys.
00:59:27Oh, my God.
00:59:30Yeah, you like it?
00:59:30Come together, right?
00:59:44This looks great.
00:59:45Yeah, we'll see if it actually works tonight.
00:59:47Um, I was just going to see about...
00:59:50Oh, yeah, the collar.
00:59:51So I put a hinge in the collar and it opens and closes.
00:59:54And I even dadoed in a biscuit so that it locks.
00:59:56Check it out.
00:59:58What?
01:00:04Okay, so let me get this straight.
01:00:06This is a surgery scene.
01:00:08The surgeons are aliens.
01:00:11Who are eviscerating their patient.
01:00:14Eviscerating sounds so harsh.
01:00:16That's the actual term for taking organs out of someone's body.
01:00:20Shouldn't there at least be some blood on the walls, then?
01:00:24Check this out.
01:00:28Oh, my God.
01:00:29That's so creepy.
01:00:30That's going to be awesome.
01:00:32It's all about the details.
01:00:34Speaking of which,
01:00:35has anybody seen the butcher knife?
01:00:37Butcher's knife?
01:00:46So I pull my head out.
01:00:57Yeah.
01:00:58Then the executioner closes the door,
01:01:00and then I drop the blade?
01:01:02You're going to pull your head out
01:01:03as the executioner closes the door.
01:01:05You guys want to try it?
01:01:08It's really finicky.
01:01:09All right.
01:01:10Good.
01:01:10Perfect.
01:01:11Okay.
01:01:11Now,
01:01:13as he closes the door,
01:01:14pull your head.
01:01:17Good.
01:01:18He's going to lock the door.
01:01:20Then I guess you guys are going to want to go
01:01:21one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand,
01:01:23three-one-thousand in your head.
01:01:24You're going to close that.
01:01:28Lock it.
01:01:30That's awesome.
01:01:32When did you do the neck?
01:01:33Yeah, you like that?
01:01:35I just did it the other day.
01:01:37I cut the bottom off of another head.
01:01:39Oh, you bought another head?
01:01:40Yeah.
01:01:40Two heads are better than one.
01:01:43Hey, guys.
01:01:44That's awesome.
01:01:46Man, oh, man.
01:01:47So what's going on, guys?
01:01:49Right.
01:01:50So we were thinking,
01:01:51since the hospital scene is so bright,
01:01:53do you think it'll affect the snake scene,
01:01:55which needs to be really dark?
01:01:57That is a good point.
01:02:01Let me just take the collar off of Ned,
01:02:02and I'll come help you out.
01:02:04That's right.
01:02:14Get down on the other side.
01:02:17Oh!
01:02:20Oh, that's so cool, dude.
01:02:23Oh, I would be scared to death.
01:02:27I would be scared to death.
01:02:28Wait, does it come back in?
01:02:29Oh, that's so cool,
01:02:30how it just goes back in the wall like that.
01:02:33Wait, what are these for?
01:02:36Let me show you.
01:02:38So when this is out...
01:02:39Okay.
01:02:42...and it comes back out...
01:02:43All right.
01:02:44...they think the scene is over,
01:02:46but it's not.
01:02:47All right.
01:02:49So they're here,
01:02:50and then the lights go out.
01:02:52Oh.
01:02:55Wow, your dad really has thought of everything.
01:03:00Dave, it's Allison on the phone.
01:03:02She wants to know how you're going to make sure
01:03:03that the guillotine doesn't accidentally fall
01:03:05on her son's neck.
01:03:07I'll be right there.
01:03:08That sounds like a lot of work.
01:03:13Did you guys even get to go trick-or-treating?
01:03:15You can't have a Halloween without candy.
01:03:18As a matter of fact,
01:03:20we did go trick-or-treating.
01:03:23All right.
01:03:24Lake, then up to Magnolia?
01:03:25As long as we stop by the house
01:03:26with the three chimneys first.
01:03:28The one down somewhere?
01:03:29Yep.
01:03:30But there aren't as many houses down there.
01:03:33Yeah, but that house gives a ton of candy.
01:03:36Yeah, but we lose time walking there.
01:03:39But, you know,
01:03:41we might give us candy elsewhere,
01:03:44but we make better use of our time.
01:03:47That actually makes sense.
01:03:50Hey, guys.
01:03:51Are we getting too old for trick-or-treating?
01:03:55Nope.
01:03:56I'm V-Lance.
01:03:58You want to see my pumpkin?
01:04:00Very nice.
01:04:01Very nice, yeah.
01:04:03I mean, this is like a woodworking marvel, you know?
01:04:06Oh, thanks.
01:04:08I, uh...
01:04:09I certainly spend enough time on it.
01:04:12Yeah, you're not even a woodworker.
01:04:13No, no, not by trade.
01:04:15Right.
01:04:17Now you've got something to fall back on.
01:04:20Yeah, we'll see.
01:04:21What inspired you?
01:04:23Oh, uh...
01:04:25It was a gift from my dad.
01:04:27Nice.
01:04:27Actually, yeah, I, uh...
01:04:29You know, when he got sick, I just, I wanted to make him something, and, you know, Skelly was a game that he'd grown up playing in the Bronx, and, you know, he made a version of it for the kids last year, and we talked about making a tabletop version of it, but then, uh...
01:04:43And then he got sick, and...
01:04:44And you did it.
01:04:46And I did it, yeah.
01:04:47Did he like it?
01:04:48Yeah, he saw it.
01:04:54It's funny, I...
01:04:55I spent all this time making this for him, and now I just, I kind of wish I would have spent that time with him, you know?
01:05:07Well, I'm sure he'd, uh, really appreciated it.
01:05:15Yeah, I think so.
01:05:18Oh.
01:05:18An army descends.
01:05:21Yeah, we'd better not help him.
01:05:28Uh, you guys want to, uh, bring it in?
01:05:30Yeah, let's bring it in just for, for a second.
01:05:33Um, I just want to say, it's, it's, it's been so fun working on this with you guys.
01:05:39I mean, you guys have, you, you've done amazing work, and it's...
01:05:43You too, Dave?
01:05:45Yeah, Dave!
01:05:48Okay, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right!
01:05:52Okay, okay, look, no, okay, okay, look, it wasn't just me, guys, it, it, it really, it was all of us.
01:05:59Let's make this something to remember, guys!
01:06:01Yeah!
01:06:02Yeah, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go!
01:06:05Let's go!
01:06:14Through!
01:06:15Perfect!
01:06:16Good, okay.
01:06:17All right, now, you just want to get your arms through.
01:06:21Uh, great.
01:06:23All right, alright.
01:06:24Nice!
01:06:25That's great.
01:06:25Here we go!
01:06:26Woo!
01:06:26Let's do it, ready?
01:06:27Yeah!
01:06:28Let's go!
01:06:43Chains.
01:06:44Uh, since...
01:06:45Just move them over.
01:06:46Yeah.
01:06:47She'll come and she'll see them, so we have to move them.
01:06:48Uh, all right.
01:06:49Let me move the access.
01:06:50Okay.
01:06:51Yeah.
01:06:52Anything in the middle.
01:06:53Anything that she can see while coming through the door.
01:06:56Okay.
01:06:57Now, should that one go on there or there?
01:06:59Uh...
01:07:00What was it like when it was over...
01:07:01Okay.
01:07:02Um...
01:07:03Yeah, yeah.
01:07:04Okay.
01:07:05Into that.
01:07:06Okay.
01:07:07Um...
01:07:08Yeah.
01:07:09Okay.
01:07:10Um...
01:07:11Yeah.
01:07:12Okay.
01:07:13All right.
01:07:14So, you're gonna drop the blade.
01:07:15Right?
01:07:16No, I dropped the head and flipped the trap door.
01:07:19Oh, so I dropped the blade.
01:07:20No, I dropped the blade.
01:07:21You dropped the blade.
01:07:22Yeah.
01:07:23That makes sense.
01:07:24Cause...
01:07:25Yeah.
01:07:26So, do you remember your lines?
01:07:29I don't say anything.
01:07:31You don't?
01:07:32I wonder if I should say something.
01:07:35Um...
01:07:36Maybe?
01:07:37I know a guillotine joke.
01:07:39Uh...
01:07:40Uh...
01:07:41A priest, a vagabond, and an engineer were gonna go to the guillotine.
01:07:46And they all get led to the public square.
01:07:47And the priest goes first.
01:07:49And...
01:07:50He lays down.
01:07:51And he looks up at the sky.
01:07:52And he says, God, please save me.
01:07:54Please.
01:07:55And the executioner says, is that all you gotta say?
01:07:57And he goes, yes.
01:07:58And he pulls the cord.
01:07:59And the blade comes down.
01:08:01And it stops just an inch away from his neck.
01:08:03And the crowd goes crazy.
01:08:05He says, that's a miracle.
01:08:06You gotta let him go.
01:08:07They get up.
01:08:08And he walks away.
01:08:09And then the vagabond comes in.
01:08:11The vagabond lays down.
01:08:12He looks up.
01:08:13The executioner goes, you got any last words?
01:08:16He's a vagabond.
01:08:17He's like...
01:08:18He's like you guys.
01:08:19He didn't go to school or anything like that.
01:08:20So he doesn't have any words.
01:08:21And he pulls the cord, and the blade comes down.
01:08:24And it stops just like an inch away from his neck.
01:08:27And the crowd's like, apoplectic.
01:08:29They're like, this is a day of miracles.
01:08:31You gotta let him go.
01:08:33And so he goes away.
01:08:34And the engineer comes.
01:08:35And he lays down, very stoic.
01:08:37And he looks up.
01:08:38And the engineer says, you got any last words?
01:08:41The engineer goes, I think I see what the problem is.
01:08:46Oh, maybe don't say that.
01:08:48Maybe don't.
01:08:49I could sell it.
01:08:50Yeah.
01:08:51Well, I like it.
01:08:52It's scary.
01:08:53I don't know.
01:08:54A little long.
01:08:56Well, no one's come running out screaming yet.
01:08:59Give it time.
01:09:00The night he's young.
01:09:03You think you'll miss these haunted houses when they're grown up and actually celebrating
01:09:07your birthday on this date?
01:09:09You know, who knows?
01:09:10I mean, with Dave, he might be doing these for years to come.
01:09:14So be honest.
01:09:15Who comes up with the ideas?
01:09:17Um, it's a mix.
01:09:19You know, the boys normally come with this idea that's not yet fully formed.
01:09:22To say it politely.
01:09:23And, um, Dave then takes the idea a step further.
01:09:26And then the boys take it another step further.
01:09:28And then, before you know it, you've got...
01:09:30A live guillotine.
01:09:31Exactly.
01:09:32I'll never forget that car scene last year.
01:09:36I'll never figure out how we got it to stop it in exactly the same spot in front of the
01:09:40group each time.
01:09:41Bungies.
01:09:42And the sound effects.
01:09:43Everything was timed just right.
01:09:45I'll never forget the year they had Jonah under the candy bowl at the end.
01:09:50Kids would reach in to get candy thinking it was over and then my hand would grab them
01:09:54from inside the candy bowl.
01:09:55I thought we were going to have to call an ambulance.
01:09:58Right?
01:09:59And when Alex came out of the refrigerator, who puts a ten-year-old in a refrigerator for
01:10:03a haunted house?
01:10:04Your husband.
01:10:05Hey, at least it was unplugged.
01:10:07You know, he's done some amazing work on these things.
01:10:10Yeah, he really does.
01:10:12And I think, um, you know, especially this year, he really needed to be doing this during
01:10:17this time, you know?
01:10:22Should we get the next group ready?
01:10:24Sounds like they're wrapping up.
01:10:25Let's go.
01:10:28Let's go.
01:10:29Let's go.
01:10:30Let's go.
01:10:31Let's go.
01:10:32Let's go.
01:10:33Let's go.
01:10:34Let's go.
01:10:35Let's go.
01:10:36Let's go.
01:10:37Let's go.
01:10:38Let's go.
01:10:39Let's go.
01:10:40Let's go.
01:10:41Let's go.
01:10:42Let's go.
01:10:43Let's go.
01:10:44Let's go.
01:10:45Let's go.
01:10:46Let's go.
01:10:47Let's go.
01:10:48Let's go.
01:10:49Let's go.
01:10:50Let's go.
01:10:51Let's go.
01:10:52Let's go.
01:10:53Let's go.
01:10:54Let's go.
01:10:55Let's go.
01:10:56Hey, don't forget to shut this door.

01:11:56Things were going wrong, but it wasn't over just yet.
01:12:26Did you hear that?
01:12:30The tape?
01:12:31I had no idea it was taped over something.
01:12:33Yeah, we had a few troubles of our own.
01:12:37It's okay.
01:12:38It's the first run, there's always kinks to be worked out.
01:12:42How'd it go?
01:12:45There were a few glitches.
01:12:48I think the guillotine was alright.
01:12:53Tough crowd though.
01:12:54Yeah.
01:12:55The night is young, let's consider it a practice run, huh?
01:13:00Yeah.
01:13:03Okay.
01:13:09Young Jonah was overcome with so many bottled up emotions about the haunted house, about
01:13:16his dad, about grandpa.
01:13:20That's when he realized he needed to let it all out.
01:13:29Shona?
01:13:30Shona?
01:13:31Shona?
01:13:35Yeah, let's go!

01:16:44Are you ready for blood?
01:16:48Huh?
01:16:51Oh, I love blood.
01:16:54Here we go.
01:16:57Oh, this is so much blood.
01:17:09Hey, guys.
01:17:11What?
01:17:12We did it.
01:17:12That was great.
01:17:13That was great.
01:17:15Hey, how'd it go?
01:17:16It was terrifying.
01:17:18Great.
01:17:19I think we're in our groove now.

01:18:45We did it.
01:18:46Good job, guys.
01:18:48That snake scene?
01:19:02When the ropes fell?
01:19:05Got them every time.
01:19:08Come on, man.
01:19:11How did your team go?
01:19:19It went well.

01:19:54Woo!
01:19:57Oh!
01:19:58Whoa!
01:20:15Success felt great.
01:20:17But what was even greater was the warmth of friends, family, and the beauty of teamwork.
01:20:23Jonah and his dad especially learned that when life gets tough,
01:20:29the most important thing is cherishing the time you have with the ones you love.
01:20:36I love you guys.
01:20:41What was that?
01:20:46I love you guys.
01:20:52What was that?
01:20:53I'm letting out all my bottled up emotions like Daddy did.
01:20:56That's a really good idea.
01:20:59Yeah?
01:21:00Get up.

01:21:33Get ready for bed.
01:21:34No Xbox, okay?
01:21:35Sorry, buddy.
01:21:37I think they understood.
01:21:38Told you they would.
01:21:40And you know who's gonna love that book?
01:21:43Papa Dave.
01:21:44Uh, Mom and Dad, sorry to interrupt.
01:21:48What is it, JJ?
01:21:50I was just thinking maybe we could build a haunted house this Halloween.
01:21:54That would be a good way to keep the family tradition going.
01:21:57I think that's a great idea, son.
01:22:01Honey house!
01:22:02Honey house!
01:22:03Honey house!

01:22:18I don't know if he'll be able to come all this way, but, you know.
01:22:21But, you know, um...
01:22:29Yeah, I think you should answer that.
01:22:34Dad?
01:22:37Did you read the book?
01:22:40What'd you think?
01:22:47Yeah, yeah, I think the kids will love that.
01:22:52Okay, yeah, spreece soon.
