00:01:00I know it's not conventional, but Halloween always brought my family together growing up, more so than any other holiday.
00:01:08It was a father-son thing especially, and even though we haven't been together for many Halloweens, I still think of my dad each year.
00:01:15Between starting a family, moving away, and my career taking over, life just kind of happened.
00:01:22Hi, Daddy!
00:01:23Hi, sweetheart.
00:01:25Hi.
00:01:26Oh, my God, you're so big.
00:01:28Hi, buddy.
00:01:29Hi, JJ.
00:01:34What was that for?
00:01:37Just getting ready for Halloween, bud.
00:01:38Ah, my queen!
00:01:40I'm humbled by your presence, oh great beauty.
00:01:44Well, I just washed those pants.
00:01:46Oh, aye, aye.
00:01:47Oh, now you're interested in the real world.
00:01:59We've been at it all day.
00:02:01Well, you can't play just one game of Skelly.
00:02:03I don't really understand how it's played.
00:02:07What?
00:02:08Becca, come on.
00:02:09You're missing out.
00:02:11Okay, each player takes their cap and they place it on the starting point and it flips.
00:02:15All right, now the goal is to lay on each number in order, one, two, three, and so on,
00:02:20eventually getting on the 13th box with the skull mark.
00:02:24I didn't realize it was so simple.
00:02:26Well, I mean, more or less.
00:02:27There are, you know, other roles you can play by if you want.
00:02:30Grandpa would be pretty proud.
00:02:33Papa Dave, not so much.
00:02:38Did you check the mail today?
00:02:40Uh, yeah, something came.
00:02:42Something came?
00:02:44Yes.
00:02:44Is it red oak?
00:02:46Well, I don't know.
00:02:47I haven't opened it.
00:02:48Did you send your dad a copy?
00:02:49Yeah, I think it's supposed to arrive today.
00:02:53Are you ready to read it to them?
00:02:56Yeah, yeah.
00:02:57I mean, I put so much into this.
00:02:58I think it's time.
00:03:01Kids.
00:03:02Lucy.
00:03:03JJ.
00:03:04JJ.
00:03:05Charlie, let's go inside.
00:03:09Come on, buddy.
00:03:10There you go.
00:03:10Peppin' you step.
00:03:11That's a boy.
00:03:12Wait, is that it?
00:03:25Mm-hmm.
00:03:25You're...
00:03:26Wait, wait.
00:03:30Good.
00:03:32Kids, come downstairs when you're done.
00:03:34Your dad has a surprise for you.
00:03:36Hey, when are we going to put up the Halloween decorations?
00:03:39Well, is it a little too early for that?
00:03:41Never.
00:03:43Okay, we'll go get them.
00:03:44All right.
00:03:51Okay.
00:03:53Oh my God.
00:04:05All right.
00:04:05All right.
00:04:05Okay.
00:04:06Can we see the surprise now?
00:04:18Oh, yeah.
00:04:20Gather round, children.
00:04:21Your father has accomplished a great feat,
00:04:24and now you must be subjected to the fruits of his labor.
00:04:28Wait, what kind of fruits?
00:04:29Apples?
00:04:30Obviously grapes.
00:04:31But I don't like grapes.
00:04:33Okay, just forget about the fruits, okay?
00:04:34So, what's the surprise?
00:04:37Well, it's a book that I wrote just for you guys and Papa Dave.
00:04:44We haven't seen Papa Dave in so long.
00:04:46Yeah, since last Christmas.
00:04:48Yeah, it has been a while.
00:04:50Well, maybe before this Christmas arrives,
00:04:52we can actually start reading the book.
00:04:55All right, all right.
00:05:00Many years ago, a boy named Jonah was getting excited for Halloween.
00:05:04Who's Jonah?
00:05:06Jonah is me.
00:05:08I thought your name was Daddy.
00:05:10Yeah, well, before I was called Daddy, I was mostly known as Jonah.
00:05:14Oh.
00:05:16Every year, Jonah, his dad, and his grandpa would make a haunted house
00:05:20with all the neighborhood kids for Halloween.
00:05:22This year would be their biggest build yet,
00:05:24so plans started early in the spring over breakfast.
00:05:30First you break the egg for the omelet.
00:05:33First you break the egg for the omelet.
00:05:36Cheese and peppers, peppers and onions.
00:05:41Onions...
00:05:42Jonah, Jonah, here is your omelet.
00:06:01Jonah, Jonah, here is your omelet.
00:06:04Eat very slowly, not too fast.
00:06:07Come on.
00:06:09Jonah, Jonah, here is your omelet.
00:06:13Enough about omelets.
00:06:14Just talk about the haunted house.
00:06:16Okay, okay.
00:06:19Later that year,
00:06:20those haunted house plans were being put into action
00:06:23by Jonah and his friends
00:06:24with curly-haired Nate taking the lead.
00:06:26The haunted house plans were being put into action
00:06:56high- laissez-chill.
00:06:57The haunted house plans were being put into action
00:07:02with a tent at night,
00:07:03and taken care of the outside.
00:07:03You would be able to close it,
00:07:04and even if you walk into action.
00:07:05Whatever your hope was.
00:07:06In a short time,
00:07:07you will be able to knit the same place.
00:07:09The haunted house plans were being put in.
00:07:10Again, on the outside site,
00:07:14you will be able to
00:07:14get the same place.
00:07:15How can you not feel?
00:07:16How do you manage the dungeon?"
00:07:17ΠΈΠ»ΠΈ even a full time at night.
00:07:18Instead of the haunted house plans
00:07:20are not having to cut the things
00:07:21but as You can sleep at night before.
00:07:25It won't turn!
00:07:30Oh, no way.
00:07:31This is not gonna go, bro.
00:07:32Just leave it alone.
00:07:33No, hold on.
00:07:34Kyle, it's going towards you.
00:07:36It's going towards you.
00:07:38Ha ha ha.
00:07:40Should we begin?
00:07:45So first, I just want to say that I'm really glad we're doing The Haunted House again this
00:07:49year.
00:07:50The Haunted House is seriously, like, my favorite part of last year.
00:07:54But that being said, I feel like we just need to make it a goal to outdo last year.
00:07:59That's going to be pretty hard.
00:08:01I mean, remember the car scene?
00:08:03Is your guys' dad going to be helping again?
00:08:05I think so.
00:08:06Because that would be a lot of help.
00:08:08Alright, assuming their dad is on board, we got one idea so far.
00:08:12The guillotine.
00:08:13What's a guillotine?
00:08:14It's a machine that's designed to cut.
00:08:16We'll get to that later.
00:08:20Which was actually a pretty good idea.
00:08:23Naturally.
00:08:24But that still leaves us with one idea.
00:08:27So we need to think of some more.
00:08:29Well look who it is.
00:08:41Well, look who it is.
00:09:03Had they ever let that guy be an exchange student?
00:09:06He probably lied on his application somehow.
00:09:08He had to have.
00:09:09There's no way he's a good student.
00:09:11The other day, he asked me what state were we in.
00:09:14What's the foreign exchange student's name?
00:09:16Um, hmm.
00:09:17To be honest, I don't know.
00:09:19I don't think any of us knew how to pronounce it.
00:09:22Vlad.
00:09:23Vlad's.
00:09:24V-Laz.
00:09:25I don't know.
00:09:26It doesn't matter.
00:09:27What's he doing?
00:09:29Is he gonna smoke a cigarette?
00:09:32Of course.
00:09:39Whoa.
00:09:39Whoa.
00:09:40Wait a second.
00:09:41Vlad's in the haunted house.
00:09:51He is terrifying in real life.
00:09:53All we would have to do is put a mask on him and just let him be a scary Danish self.
00:09:58I don't know.
00:09:58What if he beats up a kid?
00:10:00Because he would do that?
00:10:03True.
00:10:03He might beat up a kid in the heat of a moment.
00:10:06But I think that's a risk we're gonna have to take.
00:10:08Okay.
00:10:10Everyone in favor for having the lads in the haunted house.
00:10:13All right.
00:10:16Well, it's official.
00:10:18Some little kid's gonna have a heart attack this year.
00:10:20Hey, Vlad's.
00:10:25Hey, Vlad's.
00:10:26I don't know.
00:10:27I don't know.
00:10:27Come on.
00:10:28No.
00:10:28I don't know.
00:10:29I don't know.
00:10:30Do you have Halloween in Denmark?
00:10:35We do.
00:10:36But we have Halloween, we celebrate that, you know, your traditions build over to my traditions.
00:10:44But we also have Festiflauen.
00:10:46Festiflauen?
00:10:47Nope.
00:10:48Festiflauen.
00:10:49Festiflauen.
00:10:50Festiflauen.
00:10:51Festiflauen.
00:10:52Festiflauen.
00:10:53Festiflauen.
00:10:54Festiflauen.
00:10:55Festiflauen.
00:10:56I'll get it.
00:10:58What do you do for a Festiflauen?
00:11:01You have bobbing for apples.
00:11:02We have sort of like bobbing for, it's called Festiflauen.
00:11:07Bob down, you eat it without your hands, and if you win, you get money, you get candy.
00:11:10You get money?
00:11:11That sounds pretty American.
00:11:13You don't get much.
00:11:14It's not like a big prize game like, you know, $100,000 like all your game shows, but we have
00:11:23fun.
00:11:24It's a good time.
00:11:25Give me a favor.
00:11:26Hold that.
00:11:27Hold that.
00:11:28Now follow me.
00:11:29Where are we going?
00:11:30We're going to do some work.
00:11:32But I'm smoking.
00:11:44Bela?
00:11:45Huh.
00:11:46Well, he left his door open, so he can't really blame us if we look around.
00:11:52Okay, back in Denmark, I'm sure these posters meant something.
00:11:59Ooh.
00:12:00Are you Finnish?
00:12:01No.
00:12:02I'm Danish.
00:12:03Finnish?
00:12:04No.
00:12:05I'm Danish.
00:12:06I don't get it.
00:12:10Uh-huh.
00:12:11Oh.
00:12:12Uh-huh.
00:12:13Whoa.
00:12:14That.
00:12:15Look's pretty realistic.
00:12:17And I bet you they mulled it from someone's actual face.
00:12:34face probably hey we could use this for the haunted house dude we could use it
00:12:48for like a guillotine scene that'd be awesome and I mean it looks so real
00:12:56should we ask if we can use it well then he'll know we were in his room I'm working here guys do you need something we had an idea for the haunted house we were in Vlad's room he let us go in well he didn't say we couldn't be there anyway he gave us this we're thinking we could use her for like a guillotine scene you guys are crazy you know that could you help us make it
00:13:24I don't know Jonah I'm gonna be really busy this fall we'll see you okay I gotta take this hello
00:13:54the garage was cold and empty young Jonah had a lot of work to do without his dad or his grandpa
00:14:06why did Papa Dean not want to help well he hadn't built anything for a while not since his last project
00:14:12what was his last project you guys obviously know the game Scully right yeah
00:14:18my favorite game that was a game that my grandpa your great grandpa taught me and your uncle when we were young now you have to use a little imagination
00:14:30here picture that you're in the middle of a narrow Brooklyn street cars parked on either side surrounded by huge tenement buildings yeah in the
00:14:38years 1930 newspaper costs a nickel and there's a crazy new dance called the foxtrot sweeping the nation I do not need your sarcasm
00:14:46grandpa what would you do when a car came down the street well we pause the game of course and hope that the car hadn't
00:14:53hit anyone's pieces what's in them wax and a penny those are regulation that enough of you right let me show you how
00:15:05let me show you how they work okay not quite like that but nearly like that so let me tell you about the time we
00:15:17was playing the game and Dutch Schultz came down the street you'll never guess how nimble his fingers were
00:15:25give me the pieces
00:15:55I'm

00:18:05I
00:18:07I
00:18:09I
00:18:11I
00:18:13I know, not like foosball, but just a similar genre of game, Dad.
00:18:21Oh, similar genre, yeah.
00:18:24And what about the bottle caps, huh?
00:18:27I mean, they'd scuff any smooth surface you got.
00:18:30But I suppose you're going to have them replaced with something more suitable to your dorm, huh?
00:18:36Well, first of all, Dad, it's not my dorm room.
00:18:38I live in a house.
00:18:39Yeah, but yes, actually, I did think that something smoother would work a little bit better, so I made those.
00:18:46Huh?
00:18:48You want to see?
00:18:51Sure.
00:18:55It's round.
00:18:57It's all wrong.
00:18:58It's round.
00:18:59It shouldn't be round.
00:18:59Well, I mean, that's the part of the problem we ran into with the first prototype.
00:19:03The pieces were getting stuck in the corners.
00:19:05But now, look, you can do this.
00:19:07Oh.
00:19:10Oh, that's neat.
00:19:14So what do you think, Jonah?
00:19:15Would you play this game?
00:19:17Yeah, it's pretty fun.
00:19:18Well, my grandson likes it, and then clearly it has potential.
00:19:29You okay, Dad?
00:19:32Are you sure?
00:19:33Are you sure?
00:19:37I, um, I even made another set of legs for it.
00:19:44You can take them off, and they're shorter.
00:19:46You can sit on a table.
00:19:48It's wonderful, David.
00:19:54I made it for you, Dad.
00:19:57Is that the last time you saw your grandpa?
00:20:03Yeah, it was.
00:20:05That's why my dad, Papa Dave, had such a hard time building things.
00:20:11It only reminded him of his last gift to grandpa.
00:20:13Without the help of his dad, Jonah and his friends started visiting other haunted houses to get ideas for their own.
00:20:27Let's see you on this, coach.
00:20:32Super excited.
00:20:34But...
00:20:35All right.
00:20:39Remember, guys, this is reconnaissance, so we want to see what works and what doesn't in the haunted house.
00:20:43First mistake?
00:20:44Fake skeleton missing its head.
00:20:46I thought it was supposed to be like that.
00:20:49Oh, like, uh...
00:20:51Ichabod Crane.
00:20:52Right.
00:20:53But then, why would it be a skeleton?
00:20:54It's like mixing two different things.
00:20:55Maybe the wind blew it off, or somebody bumped into it.
00:21:01I think the fact that we don't know if it's supposed to be that way or not says it all.
00:21:05True.
00:21:11Halloween was only a few weeks away, so Jonah got to building on his own.
00:21:15He couldn't help but worry that without the help of his dad, the haunted house would be a dud.
00:21:20After all, everyone was having a hard time without Grandpa.
00:21:31Mom was a preacher, and the stories she told always gave a way of giving us the comfort and guidance we needed.
00:21:37In spiritual experiences in many religions, the revelation that sweetens life, that brings peace, is surely that, despite our fully recognized limitations, brokenness, sinfulness, culpability, suffering, we are yet one, beloved, belonging, at one with the universe.
00:21:57Whether we experience this bliss as redemption, salvation, or as the unifying spirit of life, or as nirvana, or however, this experience of oneness is joyful transformations that reconnect us with our spiritual path.
00:22:12Now we extinguish this flame, but not the light of truth, the warmth of community, or the fire of commitment.
00:22:23These we carry in our hearts until we are together again.
00:22:30That was nice.
00:22:32Now, you know, me, I never smoke cigarettes.
00:22:36You know, I mean, think about it.
00:22:39Cigar-ettes.
00:22:40It's the feminine ending.
00:22:41I'm just going to smoke cigars.
00:22:45Now that is pizza dough.
00:22:48How are we looking?
00:22:49Is the sauce ready?
00:22:50Just about.
00:22:52Oh, oh, no, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:22:54Not so much.
00:22:55A little.
00:22:56I only put a little.
00:22:57You always put too much.
00:22:58Here.
00:22:59No, it don't.
00:22:59Sorry.
00:23:00Okay.
00:23:00Come on.
00:23:01Here we go.
00:23:06That...
00:23:06That's something.
00:23:07All right, here we go.
00:23:09Pizza time.
00:23:10Ready?
00:23:11Mm-hmm.
00:23:12Let's do this.
00:23:14Okay.
00:23:15Start with the sauce.
00:23:17You do that.
00:23:18Yeah.
00:23:18Go ahead.
00:23:19All right.
00:23:19Get the toppings.
00:23:20Start with the cheese.
00:23:22Look at this.
00:23:24Here you go.
00:23:25Oh, wait.
00:23:25Hold on.
00:23:25Wait.
00:23:26Don't put the cheese on yet.
00:23:27Let me do this.
00:23:28Let me do my sauce work.
00:23:30Let me do my sauce work really quick.
00:23:32All right.
00:23:33Oh, cheese.
00:23:34Wait for the cheese.
00:23:34You're the cheese man.
00:23:36Crazy for cheese.
00:23:37You got to hold on for a second.
00:23:38Let me get this going.
00:23:40All right?
00:23:40I know what I'm doing.
00:23:41I've done this before.
00:23:43You're a little rookie-ish, if I do say so myself.
00:23:47All right.
00:23:48Hold on.
00:23:49You know just on one half.
00:23:51One half.
00:23:52Okay?
00:23:53Sausage freak.
00:23:54It's going to get crazy up in here.
00:23:56This is sausage?
00:23:57Yes.
00:23:58That is sausage.
00:23:59And you know that I don't like sausage.
00:24:01So let's be easy with it.
00:24:16Do you ever wonder what it would be like to just live in the woods?
00:24:20You know, like if you didn't have a house to stay in or anything and you had to survive
00:24:25on your own in the wilderness.
00:24:28Do you ever wonder stuff like that?
00:24:30Yeah.
00:24:32Like, we're so used to living in houses and getting our food from the grocery store that
00:24:37you never even think about it, but, you know, it could happen.
00:24:41You'd have to catch your own food for one thing.
00:24:44Yeah.
00:24:44Exactly.
00:24:46So, it'd probably be important not to accidentally step on your sister's fishing pole, ruining
00:24:52your only chance of survival.
00:24:53That was you.
00:24:54Oh, how many times have we been through this?
00:24:56I was 15 feet away when I heard that snap.
00:24:58I was 15 feet away when I heard it.
00:25:00I was untangling my line from the tree.
00:25:02I remember.
00:25:02Oh, wow.
00:25:04You heard it because it was right under your feet.
00:25:06Think about it.
00:25:06How could you have heard it if you were 15 feet away?
00:25:09Yes, and that's what you said too.
00:25:10Fine.
00:25:11Fine.
00:25:12It's clear that we're not going to settle this tonight, so let's just agree to disagree.
00:25:16Fine.
00:25:17You broke a sister's fishing pole.
00:25:25Oh!
00:25:26Oh!
00:25:27Oh!
00:25:28No!
00:25:29Please!
00:25:30Stop!
00:25:31Fine!
00:25:32Fine!
00:25:33Fine!
00:25:34Truce!
00:25:35Truce!
00:25:36Truce!
00:25:37You know, 25 years from now, we're still going to be arguing about this.
00:25:52Yep.
00:25:53Good night.
00:25:56Good night.
00:25:56Do you ever think about death?
00:26:14Do you ever think about death?
00:26:26Kids!
00:26:27Dinner's ready.
00:26:29Dinamidees!
00:26:29What?
00:26:30I'll get them.
00:26:31I don't know, Jonah.
00:26:32Do you think this is all a little heavy for them?
00:26:49Kids are smart.
00:26:50Maybe you're surprised what they are doing.
00:26:53But I am joking.
00:26:54You'd be surprised what they pick up on.
00:26:57After all, I learned my mother's teachings.
00:27:01And even if they don't, the doctor said that I need this.
00:27:05Your doctor?
00:27:07You've only seen a dermatologist this year.
00:27:10The largest organ in your body and mine was calling for help.
00:27:13Oh, yeah? Yeah?
00:27:18I think it'll be fine.
00:27:24Hey.
00:27:26Hey. Long day?
00:27:29Yeah. Just, uh, this project deadline.
00:27:33There was a miscommunication early on and now we're all scrambling to find out where it started.
00:27:39But, uh, that's life.
00:27:43How's the sermon?
00:27:45It's coming along.
00:27:46Okay. Yeah.
00:27:49Remind me what it's about again?
00:27:51Grief. But it's gonna be uplifting.
00:27:55Sounds like a real crowd pleaser.
00:27:58Well, I think the mistake that people make is thinking that we get through grief.
00:28:04Right? Like we move beyond it and it's behind us.
00:28:08When really we're always kind of going through grief.
00:28:12I already feel uplifted.
00:28:14It doesn't have to be so depressing.
00:28:17You know? It's like, yes, we are always experiencing loss from the day we're born.
00:28:22And at times, that loss can feel greater than others.
00:28:26As you're experiencing right now with your father's passing.
00:28:29And though we can't avoid loss or the pain it causes, you know, if we're open to the possibility, we can experience an equally strong, though more elusive emotion.
00:28:56Catharsis.
00:29:05Unfortunately, one cannot be experienced without the other.
00:29:09Aw.
00:29:11Dave.
00:29:26Dad, I thought you said this was a Halloween story about a haunted house.
00:29:33Well, don't forget, it's about love and loss, too.
00:29:39Mom's next sermon was very special.
00:29:42A man is on his deathbed, and his family is gathered around.
00:29:45His son says, Papa, is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable?
00:29:49I stole this from Billy Crystal, by the way.
00:29:53I want to taste Mom's chopped liver just once more before I die, the father replies.
00:29:58Please, some chopped liver.
00:29:59Okay, Pop, the son says, and he goes into the kitchen.
00:30:02A few moments later, he comes back.
00:30:04Do you have the liver?
00:30:05The dad asks.
00:30:06No, Mom said it's for after.
00:30:08Death and life are so intertwined in our experience, but the good stuff doesn't have to only be for after.
00:30:21In Ecclesiastes, Solomon asks the big question, what is the point of life under the sun?
00:30:27Now, he was kind of in an existential funk at the time.
00:30:29In fact, he begins Ecclesiastes by repeating the word meaningless over and over.
00:30:34Everything is meaningless.
00:30:36What is the point of life, he wonders, when we are at the mercy of circumstance?
00:30:42When tragedy and hardship can come unexpectedly?
00:30:45When so much of what we do seems so futile?
00:30:50Solomon did not shy away from asking these challenging questions,
00:30:53and he urged others not to shy away from them either,
00:30:56but instead to embrace the fact that life can be frustrating at times,
00:31:01confusing, unfair, and downright painful.
00:31:06He was a realist.
00:31:08But in the face of this chaos, what does he suggest?
00:31:14To enjoy life.
00:31:16Yes, Solomon said, and he said it many times, enjoy life.
00:31:21What an audacious suggestion.
00:31:23Have that chopped liver now.
00:31:25Don't save it for later.
00:31:27Enjoy that sunset instead of continuing to work into the evening.
00:31:31Go out dancing.
00:31:32Laugh.
00:31:33Eat good food.
00:31:35All within moderation, of course.
00:31:36He wasn't advocating gluttony or hedonism or laziness or anything like that.
00:31:41Just... enjoyment.
00:31:43Now, he does acknowledge that this way of living, holding such a large contradiction,
00:31:51can pose as a challenge.
00:31:53To know that you will face tragedy in your life.
00:31:57That you will lose loved ones.
00:31:59That everything you create will one day be destroyed.
00:32:02To accept all of this and still choose simply to enjoy life.
00:32:09It is a challenge.
00:32:12But in the end, it's a challenge worth taking.
00:32:16Is this where the story gets happier?
00:32:21Although the kids were still missing Dad's help and advice,
00:32:24they could always count on Uncle Glenn's quirky philosophies.
00:32:29Well, maybe if we...
00:32:32I don't know.
00:32:33I don't know.
00:32:34This is impossible.
00:32:35It's just... if...
00:32:37I got nothing.
00:32:39It's... yeah, it's impossible.
00:32:41Hello, boys.
00:32:43What's going on?
00:32:45A little meeting of the minds?
00:32:46We're trying to hit the hoop so the marker cap falls in the bottle.
00:32:50It's impossible.
00:32:51I don't know how we did it.
00:32:53Villad showed it to us.
00:32:55Can I see?
00:32:59Can I try?
00:33:01Sure.
00:33:03So...
00:33:05What are you guys doing up so late on a school night?
00:33:08Is this a little late?
00:33:11Well, we have tomorrow off for parent meetings.
00:33:14Parent meetings?
00:33:15What's that about?
00:33:16It sounds lame.
00:33:18Where the teachers all go to Six Flags?
00:33:20I...
00:33:21I didn't complain.
00:33:22Yeah?
00:33:23I wouldn't complain either.
00:33:25Now, what you gotta understand about this
00:33:28is that you're being deceived by your own perceptions.
00:33:33Okay?
00:33:34Your mind is telling you one thing,
00:33:36but reality is slightly different.
00:33:39What you need to do
00:33:40is turn off your caveman brain.
00:33:46Huh?
00:33:48And start to see what is actually in front of you.
00:33:57Good day, gentlemen.
00:33:58Oh, Uncle Glen.
00:33:59He's always giving the most interesting, yet random advice.
00:34:08He is known for that.
00:34:11Uncle Glen is so smart.
00:34:13Do you even understand what he meant?
00:34:14Yeah.
00:34:15He meant that you can't view your life and the universe through a narrow lens.
00:34:19To accomplish your goals, you have to think outside of the box,
00:34:21rather than being clouded into superficiality.
00:34:24At least that's what he told me on 4th of July,
00:34:26before you lose pants on fire with fireworks.
00:34:29That's Uncle Glen for ya.
00:34:33Anyways.
00:34:35Although Jonah appreciated his uncle's insight,
00:34:38it still couldn't replace his dad's guidance.
00:34:41No offense to Uncle Glen,
00:34:43but Jonah needed more than bottle tricks to lift up his spirits.
00:34:48Meanwhile,
00:34:50Dad was starting to realize that it's important to cherish the time you have with the people you love,
00:34:54especially in difficult times.
00:34:58So, Dad got to work once again.
00:35:07You in the big leagues now.
00:35:11You in the big leagues now.
00:35:14You in the big leagues now.
00:35:16You in the big leagues now.
00:35:18You in the big leagues now.
00:35:20I personally think it should be Ned's head.
00:35:21Looks the most like the dummies.
00:35:23Oh, thanks.
00:35:25Let's see.
00:35:28I can see it.
00:35:31You know, the only problem is the hair.
00:35:33Could you shake your head, dude?
00:35:35Oh, what if they were both wearing a bandana?
00:35:39Hey, Dave.
00:35:40Hey, Dave.
00:35:41Hey, guys.
00:35:42Oh, how's the board working?
00:35:43It's really nice.
00:35:44Really smooth.
00:35:45Good. Yeah, I put an extra layer of oil on it.
00:35:47I think that really helped.
00:35:49Definitely.
00:35:51So, I was, you know, I was thinking last night about that guillotine scene, how you guys could do it.
00:35:55Hey, we were just talking about that.
00:35:57Oh.
00:35:58Oh, okay.
00:35:59I mean, if you guys already have an idea, that's...
00:36:00No, no, no.
00:36:01We want to hear your idea.
00:36:02Can I draw here?
00:36:03Go ahead.
00:36:04Okay.
00:36:05What I was thinking is, we're going to make a guillotine, right?
00:36:08It's going to look just like any other guillotine, right?
00:36:12But then, what we're going to do is we're going to take a door.
00:36:15We're going to put six inches in front of the guillotine.
00:36:17That way, whoever's head is actually sticking out of the guillotine...
00:36:21Ned.
00:36:22Ned can pull his head out before the blade falls.
00:36:26And there's going to be an actual blade?
00:36:27Well, it's going to be Luan.
00:36:29But we're going to spray paint them.
00:36:30This will look just like real metal.
00:36:32So, we actually want to show the blade falling?
00:36:34Yeah, right.
00:36:35But you are going to hear it.
00:36:36I mean, it's going to be loud.
00:36:37Like, really loud.
00:36:39And then, what I was thinking is, you know, when the door opens and closes,
00:36:42when we open it, the head's going to fall out.
00:36:44So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to take that head you guys stole from Vlad's,
00:36:47I'm going to hollow it out, fill it up with concrete.
00:36:50That way, when it hits the ground, it's going to make a huge thud.
00:36:55Yes.
00:36:56That's pretty good.
00:36:57Only your dad would think about filling a fake head with concrete for a haunted house.
00:37:01Yeah.
00:37:02Now, I can't start it, like, right away, but I think I should get some time next week.
00:37:06In the meantime, we've got to start thinking of some other ideas.
00:37:09We should start meeting at least twice a week going forward now.
00:37:11I'll make a schedule.
00:37:13Oh, you guys are crazy, you know that?
00:37:14Yeah, but you love it.
00:37:16I think this is going to work.
00:37:17I can see it.
00:37:18I'm going to work.
00:37:19I'm going to work.
00:37:20I'm going to work.
00:37:21So I'm going to work.
00:37:22And I'll do it.
00:37:24You can see it.
00:37:25Okay.
00:37:26Let's go.
00:37:27Hopefully, everybody is going.
00:37:28I'm going to work.
00:37:29Thank you very much.
00:40:33Exactly.
00:40:34We're building our scenes from scratch.
00:40:35Well, Dave's doing a lot of the actual building.
00:40:38Yeah, but we're coming up with the ideas and making them unique.
00:40:43But true.
00:40:44We owe a lot to Dave.
00:40:45I just feel like there's so many haunted houses out there that aren't even worth the price
00:40:51of admission.
00:40:52You know what I mean?
00:40:53They're not scary.
00:40:55They're not original.
00:40:56They're just this cliche experience.
00:40:58And we just accept that.
00:40:59No one questions it.
00:41:01Oh, another haunted house.
00:41:02Oh, another haunted house.
00:41:04I wonder what's going to happen when they pop open the crypt.
00:41:06Is a dummy going to pop out?
00:41:07Oh, didn't see that one coming.
00:41:10They're all made by adults.
00:41:12Exactly.
00:41:13And who should be making the haunted houses?
00:41:15Guys, this is the perfect opportunity to do something that hasn't been done before.
00:41:22Build a haunted house that's actually scary.
00:41:26That's actually going to make kids pee their pants.
00:41:29We can't mess this up.
00:41:34Have you guys ever thought about doing something with snakes?
00:41:37I always thought that would make a good scene.
00:41:39You know?
00:41:40I don't know how it would work, really.
00:41:42Maybe you could, like, have the snakes fall down from the ceiling on top of everyone.
00:41:46It's actually a good idea, Suzanne.
00:41:49Hey, I got ideas.
00:41:53Hey, guys.
00:41:54You guys want to see something?
00:41:56Come on.
00:41:56I want to show you something.
00:41:57Come on.
00:41:58Let's go.
00:41:58Let's go.
00:41:58Let's go.
00:41:58Let's go.
00:41:59All right, let's go.
00:42:00Let's go.
00:42:00Hey, what are you doing?
00:42:01In there?
00:42:03It has to be crazy.
00:42:04It has to be crazy.
00:42:13Check out.
00:42:14Whoa.
00:42:14Hey.
00:42:15The plate looks awesome.
00:42:17Oh, thanks.
00:42:17Yeah, it's got a nice metallic sheen to it.
00:42:20Oh, but check this out.
00:42:22Now, it was a little touch and go at first, but I was able to hollow out this head, fill it
00:42:28with concrete.
00:42:29Here.
00:42:30Careful.
00:42:31Oh.
00:42:32Whoa.
00:42:33Yeah, pass it around.
00:42:36Ah, jeez.
00:42:38That's awesome.
00:42:40Here.
00:42:40Oh, wow.
00:42:45What do you think?
00:42:50I just got some weight to it.
00:42:53Yeah.
00:42:53Try dropping it.
00:42:55Not too high.
00:42:56Yeah.
00:42:57Oh.
00:42:58That's crazy.
00:42:58Yeah.
00:42:59So, you guys, uh, you want to see the gear thing?
00:43:05Yeah.
00:43:06All right, come on.
00:43:07All right, all right.
00:43:08Listen up.
00:43:09I want you guys to understand something.
00:43:11If you are not very careful with this thing, it can actually hurt you.
00:43:30Got it?
00:43:31Mm-hmm.
00:43:32Okay.
00:43:33Now, obviously, I haven't put the door on yet.
00:43:35And I'm thinking we're going to get a basket down there to catch the head.
00:43:39But this is the basic structure.
00:43:41How long did this take you?
00:43:44I don't know.
00:43:46Most of the time was spent up here.
00:43:48I'd say about four or five hours actually building, plus getting materials.
00:43:53Where did you get the wood?
00:43:56Don't worry about that, Nate.
00:43:58Okay.
00:43:59Now, I was having a lot of trouble with this blade.
00:44:02It wasn't falling straight because Luan likes to warp, especially this time of year.
00:44:06So, I was able to offset that by attaching this strip here.
00:44:09Plus, it gives us a nice ledge to lift it when we reset it.
00:44:17This is the safety.
00:44:18Okay?
00:44:19You have to engage this when we're resetting.
00:44:21Got it?
00:44:22Safety's on.
00:44:23Now, the blade actually gets held in place by a peg that's in the back.
00:44:27That's, uh, if it lines up.
00:44:31Got it.
00:44:33Now, turn the safety off.
00:44:36Now this thing is live.
00:44:39Okay?
00:44:46You guys ready?
00:44:47Yeah.
00:44:52Oh!
00:44:53This is so cool, bro.
00:44:55What?
00:44:56Now, I was thinking it would be awesome if we could actually show that, but I don't think it's possible with somebody's head actually sticking out.
00:45:02Right?
00:45:03That is where the door comes in.
00:45:05I have a question.
00:45:07Yeah?
00:45:08And this?
00:45:09This is awesome.
00:45:11This is so much cooler than I was even picturing.
00:45:14But why is the hole in the middle shaped like a puzzle piece?
00:45:18Thanks.
00:45:19Yeah, I was wondering about that too.
00:45:20Oh.
00:45:21Oh.
00:45:22Oh, you guys want to know how it's actually going to work?
00:45:25Okay.
00:45:26That's a fair question.
00:45:27Let me get the collar and I'll show you.
00:45:30Dad's insane.
00:45:31Yeah.
00:45:32Yeah.
00:45:33It's going to be cool though.
00:45:35Yup.
00:45:36Yes, I'm in.
00:45:37I'm totally in.
00:45:38I'm honored they thought of me at all.
00:45:40It's exactly the kind of thing I used to be in when I was a little kid.
00:45:45Eat it.
00:45:46Yeah.
00:45:47All right.
00:45:48Yeah, I'll see what I have lying around.
00:45:51Actually, you know what?
00:45:52I got a costume designer friend at Shakespeare and Company.
00:45:55I'm just going to.
00:45:56Oh no.
00:45:57The executioner has got to have the right costume.
00:46:00Oh no.
00:46:01Oh no.
00:46:02The executioner has got to have the right costume.
00:46:05Oh no.
00:46:06Oh no.
00:46:07Oh no.
00:46:08Oh no.
00:46:09Oh no.
00:46:10Oh no.
00:46:11Oh no.
00:46:12Oh no.
00:46:13All right.
00:46:15Okay, Bubba.
00:46:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:46:20I look forward to it.
00:46:22See you then.
00:46:24Bye.
00:46:26Push, push, push.
00:46:28Good job, boys.
00:46:29Hold it there.
00:46:31I know.
00:46:32You don't get the time for me.
00:46:34I'll get the time for you.
00:46:35I'll get the time for you.
00:46:36I'll get the time for you.
00:46:37Dude, that's enough.
00:46:39So wait, the dummy's going to be wearing the same outfit as Valad's?
00:46:50Yeah, then it's like, which one's the real one?
00:46:52Got it now.
00:46:58Push, push, push, push, push.
00:47:02Oh, Valad's, Valad's, come here.
00:47:09Is that a realistic amount of blood?
00:47:14Um, you know, I think we can add a little bit more.
00:47:27Alright, what is this thing being used for again?
00:47:30We didn't exactly think of a specific idea.
00:47:33Ooh, Nate.
00:47:35After the group sees the snakes, they're still going to get by, right?
00:47:38So...
00:47:41And that screw stops it falling off.
00:47:43That's pretty cool.
00:47:44Yeah, now we just need to get some snakes.
00:47:46Oh, and a branch.
00:47:48And a branch.
00:47:50That's the one.
00:47:51Yeah, but how are we going to get to it?
00:47:52What are you talking about?
00:47:53I thought there was only one thing to do.
00:47:54You're not going to sweat, are you?
00:47:55Yeah, I'm not going to sweat.
00:47:56We should have just brought bathing suits.
00:47:57It would be so much easier.
00:47:58No, we don't need bathing suits.
00:47:59It's going to be fun.
00:48:00It's going to be fun.
00:48:01I don't know.
00:48:02I don't know.
00:48:03It's going to be easy.
00:48:05That looks so cold.
00:48:06Yeah.
00:48:07Woo!
00:48:08Yeah!
00:48:09Woo!
00:48:10Yeah!
00:48:11Come on in, guys.
00:48:12The water's nice.
00:48:13No way.
00:48:14That's cold.
00:48:15Woo!
00:48:16I don't know.
00:48:17I don't know.
00:48:18It's going to be easy.
00:48:31Ha!
00:48:34Woo!
00:48:35Yeah!
00:48:36Come on in, guys.
00:48:38The water's nice.
00:48:39No way.
00:48:40That's cold.
00:48:41Woo!
00:48:42Woo!
00:48:43Come on, get in the water!
00:48:50Okay, well, one of you guys can cut this.
00:48:58Cut that part.
00:49:03Go.
00:49:06Nice.
00:49:16Okay, uh, staple gun.
00:49:23Okay, I'm going to get this here.
00:49:42All right, I think we're ready for a test drive.
00:50:04Wow.
00:50:05Oh, man.
00:50:06That's so cool.
00:50:07Yeah, does it look good?
00:50:08Yeah.
00:50:09It looks really good.
00:50:10Good.
00:50:11Okay, so then what we would do is we would turn the lights off, and then we will...
00:50:15Oh, that's so good.
00:50:16Wow, wait, it moves?
00:50:17Yeah, yeah, I put it in a track.
00:50:19I actually got an idea.
00:50:21What if something happens after the lights go out?
00:50:24Like what?
00:50:25Like, oh, I don't know.
00:50:27Maybe if there was some way to make it feel like there were snakes on the floor, for instance.
00:50:31Oh, my God.
00:50:32If I felt snakes on the floor at the scene, I would piss my pants.
00:50:36No, that'd be awesome, though, because it's like they see the branch.
00:50:39Uh-huh.
00:50:40And then the lights go out.
00:50:41And then they think it's over.
00:50:42Uh-huh.
00:50:43And then that's when we hit them with real snakes.
00:50:46Yeah.
00:50:47What?
00:50:48No, they're not bringing real snakes in here.
00:50:49Come on, just like gardener snakes.
00:50:52No chance.
00:50:53Fine.
00:50:54Fine.
00:50:55But we still need something to happen after the lights go out.
00:50:59Why isn't the branch enough on its own?
00:51:01You gotta hit them when they're most vulnerable.
00:51:03Yeah.
00:51:04Yeah.
00:51:05Yeah.
00:51:06Oh, Spud, so your plan is just to torture your audience to death?
00:51:10Yeah.
00:51:11Yeah.
00:51:12Yeah.
00:51:13Face.
00:51:14That sounds good.
00:51:15Yeah.
00:51:16We're gonna have to put up a disclaimer.
00:51:17I'm gonna get sued.
00:51:19It's pretty good, though.
00:51:20Right?
00:51:21I want a pet snake.
00:51:22You'll have to ask your mother about that one.
00:51:28Oh, no.
00:51:29No, no.
00:51:30No snakes.
00:51:31All right, buddy.
00:51:32We're gonna go to four and a half.
00:51:36Jonah and his dad were finally spending time together again.
00:51:39Okay.
00:51:40Good luck.
00:51:41You're nuts.
00:51:42All right.
00:51:46Nice line, buddy.
00:51:56Okay.
00:51:57Now we can talk about making another one of those.
00:52:03Well, hold on.
00:52:04Let's think about this.
00:52:06People are gonna be coming in, what, groups of, like, five or six, right?
00:52:09Yeah, that's what they were last year.
00:52:11Okay.
00:52:12Five or six people in a narrow hallway.
00:52:14They're gonna be grouped in twos, but they're gonna be bunched together because they're
00:52:18gonna be scared, right?
00:52:20So, maybe we'll do two dowels and we'll just put them this far apart.
00:52:25Let's do it.
00:52:26All right.
00:52:27In the air to Cruyff.
00:52:28He chest it down.
00:52:29He shoots.
00:52:30Goal!
00:52:32Grab it.
00:52:35Pass.
00:52:36Nice one.
00:52:38Goes to the forward.
00:52:39The forward passes back.
00:52:40Come on.
00:52:41He gets it.
00:52:42Oh.
00:52:43Oh, you all right, bud?
00:52:44Yeah.
00:52:45I'm worn out.
00:52:46Huh.
00:52:47We can take a break.
00:52:48Oh.
00:52:49Oh.
00:52:50Oh.
00:52:51You know, you played a really good game on Sunday.
00:52:54You, uh, I think you're really coming into your own in the midfield.
00:52:57Thanks.
00:52:58No, and midfield's not an easy position, buddy.
00:53:00I mean, you gotta see the whole field at the same time.
00:53:03How can I see behind me?
00:53:04That's a good point.
00:53:05No, it's just, you know, your teams, they're really thrilling to watch me.
00:53:10You guys are playing like a, like a much older team.
00:53:12Like 14 year olds?
00:53:14Yeah, I guess so.
00:53:16If you need me to put a number on it, 14 year olds.
00:53:19No, but it's just that, you know what makes soccer such a beautiful game.
00:53:24Is that it doesn't matter if you have a team that plays together, and they play in sync,
00:53:29and they play intelligently the way you guys are playing, and they're gonna beat a team
00:53:32with better individuals hands down.
00:53:34I mean, that's what makes it so beautiful.
00:53:35It's just such a, such a collective sport.
00:53:39Teamwork really does make the dream work.
00:53:42And if this haunted house was to be a success, they'd need a lot of it.
00:53:47Wait, when is this haunted house gonna be?
00:53:49We decided on next Thursday.
00:53:51You mean Halloween?
00:53:52Yeah, Halloween.
00:53:54It starts at 8, but there's probably gonna be a line, so you might wanna get here a little early.
00:53:59Is this, like, actually gonna be scary?
00:54:01Yep.
00:54:02We're actually thinking and putting a disclaimer.
00:54:05Oh, is that right?
00:54:06In the end, it's all about the kids having a good time,
00:54:08and we just wanna make sure everyone feels safe.
00:54:11Alright, thanks, man. I'll get it back to you after school tomorrow.
00:54:13Yeah, no problem.
00:54:15So you think you guys can make it?
00:54:17We'll see.
00:54:21Remember, next Thursday.
00:54:228 o'clock.
00:54:32It's just me to keep starting.
00:54:33It's better than there's a line.
00:54:34Yes.
00:54:35They'll be there early.
00:54:36Yes.
00:54:37They'll be fine.
00:54:38It's the kids.
00:54:39Did you guys make announcements in your classes yet?
00:54:41Yeah.
00:54:42Man, everybody's talking about it.
00:54:43It's gonna be a really big turnout.
00:54:45Dude, it's definitely gonna be a big turnout.
00:54:47Is it just me, or does the haunted house feel so much more substantial this year?
00:54:52No.
00:54:53I know what you mean.
00:54:54We made a real haunted house.
00:54:59Time flies when you're building a haunted house,
00:55:01and quicker than a game of Scully,
00:55:03Halloween was just one day away.
00:55:08You know, this is the easy part.
00:55:10Getting Nate up in that thing tomorrow, that's gonna be a challenge.
00:55:13Yeah.
00:55:15Alright.
00:55:16We should test it, huh?
00:55:19Yeah.
00:55:20I think that's gonna hold him.
00:55:28What do you think?
00:55:29You think we're ready?
00:55:32Yep.
00:55:33That pretty much says it.
00:55:35Well, we can't reschedule Halloween's tomorrow.
00:55:39It'll be good.
00:55:41Yeah, I think so too.
00:55:42As long as nobody loses their head.
00:55:45Well, also that kinda needs to happen.
00:55:48You're right.
00:55:49We are kinda depending on it, aren't we?
00:55:52No, it's gonna be good.
00:55:53You guys came up with a lot of good illusions this year.
00:55:58I wish your grandpa was here to see it.
00:56:00You always love these haunted houses.
00:56:02You coming?
00:56:03Yeah, I'll be in soon.
00:56:04Okay.
00:56:05The haunted house had come a long way from the cold, empty garage it was just a few weeks ago.
00:56:19But it still wasn't done yet.
00:56:21But it still wasn't done yet.
00:56:23Part of Jonah was a bit worried they wouldn't finish on time.
00:56:26Either way, he still wished grandpa was there to see it.
00:56:30After all, it was impressive what the group had accomplished.
00:56:33Well, were you guys able to finish?
00:56:37Well, be patient and you'll find out.
00:56:42It was the day of Halloween.
00:56:44Dude, this has to be perfect.
00:56:56You don't understand.
00:56:58If we fix the plan, everything should be okay.
00:57:00I'm not-
00:57:01Listen, everybody should just be on their P's and Q's and-
00:57:04Hi, girls.
00:57:07You ready for the night, Villats?
00:57:10Uh, yeah.
00:57:11But I think I lost my crown.
00:57:13Seriously?
00:57:14I'll look for it, don't worry.
00:57:16Alright, well, can you be ready in the barnet in an hour for rehearsal?
00:57:18Sure, sure.
00:57:21Hey.
00:57:25Pretty good, right?
00:57:28Alright, let's head inside, guys.
00:57:29Alright.
00:57:30Let's go.
00:57:38Alright, guys.
00:57:39This is it.
00:57:41We only have a few hours until trick-or-treating begins, and we have a lot of work to do.
00:57:45First and foremost, we need to-
00:57:52We decided you guys probably need our help.
00:57:55Yeah.
00:57:56They'll definitely need our help.
00:57:59Oh, I hope you don't mind.
00:58:00I bought some of my mom's paramedic supplies.
00:58:04I don't mind.
00:58:05I don't mind, either.
00:58:07Where have you guys been?
00:58:08We've been here.
00:58:10Alright, well, welcome aboard.
00:58:19Alright.
00:58:21We only have an hour, and we still have a lot of things to do.
00:58:24Ned, you and Ian are practicing the guillotine scene.
00:58:27Fine.
00:58:28Just do it as many times as possible.
00:58:31You want it to be like second nature by tonight.
00:58:33Jonah and Kelvin, you guys are recording the snake sounds.
00:58:36Nice.
00:58:37Make sure the audio sounds good.
00:58:39Not like the tape we recorded last year.
00:58:41Right.
00:58:43Brendan and Alex, you guys are setting up the torture room.
00:58:46Affirmative.
00:58:47And then Kyle and Asher, Liza, Caitlin and Abby, you guys are going to set up the hospital scene.
00:58:53Got it.
00:58:55The challenge is ours.
00:58:58The way I see it, this is going to be a pretty cool haunted house no matter what.
00:59:02But I'm not satisfied with pretty cool.
00:59:05We stand together on the precipice.
00:59:08Now, if you're not up for the challenge, speak up now.
00:59:11No one will think any less of you.
00:59:17Alright.
00:59:19Let's be ready in an hour.
00:59:23Hey, Dave.
00:59:24Oh, just a sec, guys.
00:59:26Oh, my God.
00:59:29Yeah, you like it?
00:59:32Oh.
00:59:34Alright.
00:59:42Come together, right?
00:59:43This looks great.
00:59:45Yeah, we'll see if it actually works tonight.
00:59:47Um, I was just going to see about...
00:59:49Oh, oh, yeah.
00:59:50The collar.
00:59:51So I put a hinge in the collar, it opens and closes, and I even dadoed in a biscuit so that it locks.
00:59:56Check it out.
00:59:58What?
01:00:01Okay, so let me get this straight. This is a surgery scene.
01:00:07The surgeons are aliens who are eviscerating their patient.
01:00:12Eviscerating sounds so... harsh.
01:00:16That's the actual term for taking organs out of someone's body.
01:00:19Shouldn't there at least be some blood on the walls, then?
01:00:24Check this out.
01:00:25Oh, my God.
01:00:28That's so creepy.
01:00:29That's going to be awesome.
01:00:31It's all about the details.
01:00:33Speaking of which...
01:00:35Has anybody seen the butcher knife?
01:00:37Butcher's knife?
01:00:38Yeah.
01:00:39So I pull my head out.
01:00:40Yeah.
01:00:41Then the executioner closes the door, and then I drop the blade?
01:00:48You're going to pull your head out as the executioner closes the door.
01:00:49You guys want to try?
01:00:50It's really finicky.
01:00:51All right.
01:00:52Good.
01:00:53Perfect.
01:00:54Okay.
01:00:55Now, as he closes the door, pull your head.
01:00:56Good.
01:00:57He's going to lock the door.
01:00:58Then I guess you guys are going to want to go one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand
01:00:59in your head.
01:01:00You're going to close that.
01:01:01Lock it.
01:01:02And then I drop the blade.
01:01:03You're going to pull your head out as the executioner closes the door.
01:01:07You guys want to try?
01:01:08It's really finicky.
01:01:09All right.
01:01:10Good.
01:01:11Perfect.
01:01:12Okay.
01:01:13Now, as he closes the door, pull your head.
01:01:17Good.
01:01:18He's going to lock the door.
01:01:19Then I guess you guys are going to want to go one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand
01:01:23in your head.
01:01:25You're going to close that.
01:01:28Lock it.
01:01:30That's awesome.
01:01:32When did you do the neck?
01:01:33Yeah?
01:01:34You like that?
01:01:35I just did it the other day.
01:01:36I cut the bottom off of another head.
01:01:38Oh, you bought another head?
01:01:39Yeah.
01:01:40Two heads are better than one.
01:01:43Hey, guys.
01:01:44That's awesome.
01:01:45Oh, man.
01:01:46Oh, man.
01:01:47So what's going on, guys?
01:01:48Right.
01:01:49So we were thinking, since the hospital scene is so bright, do you think it'll affect the
01:01:54snake scene, which needs to be really dark?
01:01:56That is a good point.
01:01:59Um, let me just take the collar off of Ned and I'll come help you out.
01:02:02Get down the other side.
01:02:03Oh!
01:02:04Oh, that's so cool, dude.
01:02:07Oh, I would be scared to death.
01:02:09I would be scared to death.
01:02:10I would be scared to death.
01:02:11Wait, does it come back in?
01:02:12Oh, that's so cool how it just goes back in the wall like that.
01:02:16Wait, what are these for?
01:02:17Let me show you.
01:02:18So when this is out.
01:02:19Okay.
01:02:20And it comes back out.
01:02:21All right.
01:02:22They think the scene is over.
01:02:23Let me show you.
01:02:24So when this is out.
01:02:25Okay.
01:02:26And it comes back out.
01:02:27All right.
01:02:28They think the scene is over, but it's not.
01:02:29Okay.
01:02:30All right.
01:02:31So they're here and then the lights go out.
01:02:36Oh.
01:02:37Oh, wow.
01:02:38Your dad really has thought of everything.
01:02:40Dave, it's out of the wall.
01:02:42I love him.
01:02:43I love him.
01:02:44What?
01:02:45Shock.
01:02:46I love him!
01:02:47Okay.
01:02:48Hey, get them out.
01:02:49Wait, what are these?
01:02:51Let me show you.
01:02:52So when this is out.
01:02:54Oh! Wow, your dad really has thought of everything.
01:02:59Dave, is Allison on the phone?
01:03:01She wants to know how you're going to make sure that the guillotine doesn't accidentally fall on her son's neck.
01:03:06I'll be right there.
01:03:11That sounds like a lot of work. Did you guys even get to go trick-or-treating?
01:03:14You can't have a Halloween without candy.
01:03:17As a matter of fact, we did go trick-or-treating.
01:03:22All right. Lake, then up to Magnolia?
01:03:25As long as we stop by the house with the three chimneys first.
01:03:28The one down somewhere?
01:03:29Yep.
01:03:30But there aren't as many houses down there.
01:03:32Yeah, but that house gives a ton of candy.
01:03:35Yeah, but we lose time walking there.
01:03:38But, you know, we might give us candy elsewhere, but we make better use of our time.
01:03:46That actually makes sense.
01:03:49Hey, guys. Are we getting too old for trick-or-treating?
01:03:55Nope.
01:03:56I'm V-Lance. You want to see my pumpkin?
01:04:00Very nice. Very nice, yeah.
01:04:02I mean, this is like a woodworking marvel, you know?
01:04:06Oh, thanks. I, uh...
01:04:09Well, I certainly spend enough time on it.
01:04:11Yeah, you're not even a woodworker.
01:04:12No, no, not by trade.
01:04:14Right.
01:04:16Well, now you've got something to fall back on, right?
01:04:19Yeah, we'll see.
01:04:21What inspired you?
01:04:22Oh, uh...
01:04:24It was a gift from my dad.
01:04:26Nice.
01:04:27Actually, yeah.
01:04:28I, uh...
01:04:29You know, when he got sick, I just wanted to make him something.
01:04:32Nice.
01:04:33And, you know, Skelly was a game that he had grown up playing in the Bronx.
01:04:35And, you know, he made a version of it for the kids last year.
01:04:38And we talked about making a tabletop version of it, but then, uh...
01:04:42And then he got sick, and...
01:04:44And you did it.
01:04:45And I did it, yeah.
01:04:46Did he like it?
01:04:47Yeah, he saw it.
01:04:54It's funny, I...
01:04:55I spent all this time making this for him, and now I just...
01:05:02I kind of wish I would have spent that time with him, you know?
01:05:07Well...
01:05:09I'm sure he'd have really appreciated it.
01:05:14Yeah, I think so.
01:05:18Oh.
01:05:20An army descends.
01:05:21Yeah, we'd better not help him.
01:05:28You guys wanna bring it in?
01:05:30Yeah, let's bring it in just for a second.
01:05:33Um...
01:05:34I just wanna say, it's...
01:05:36It's been so fun working on this with you guys.
01:05:39I mean, you guys have...
01:05:41You've done amazing work, and it's...
01:05:43You too, Dave.
01:05:44Yeah, Dave!
01:05:45Yeah!
01:05:46Yeah!
01:05:47Yeah!
01:05:48Yeah!
01:05:49Yeah!
01:05:50Okay, all right, all right, all right, all right!
01:05:52Okay, okay, look.
01:05:53No.
01:05:54Okay, okay, look.
01:05:55It wasn't just me, guys.
01:05:56It...
01:05:57It really...
01:05:58Let's make this something to remember, guys!
01:06:00Yeah!
01:06:01Yeah!
01:06:02Yeah, let's go!
01:06:03Let's go!
01:06:04Let's go!
01:06:05Let's go!
01:06:06Let's go!
01:06:07Let's go!
01:06:14Through!
01:06:15Perfect!
01:06:16Good!
01:06:17Okay!
01:06:18All right, now...
01:06:19You just wanna get your arms through.
01:06:21Great!
01:06:23All right!
01:06:24Nice!
01:06:25That's great!
01:06:26Here we go!
01:06:27Woo!
01:06:28Let's do it!
01:06:29Chains!
01:06:30Uh, since...
01:06:31Just move them over!
01:06:32Yeah, she'll come in, she'll see them, so we have to move them.
01:06:35Uh, all right, let me move the access.
01:06:36Okay, yeah.
01:06:37Anything in the middle.
01:06:38Anything that she can see when coming through the door.
01:06:42Okay.
01:06:43Um...
01:06:44Okay.
01:06:45Now, should that one go on there or there?
01:06:47Uh...
01:06:48What was it like when it was over?
01:06:49Okay.
01:06:50Um...
01:06:51Yeah, yeah.
01:06:52Okay.
01:06:53Okay.
01:06:54Um...
01:06:55Yeah.
01:06:56That should work.
01:06:57Okay.
01:06:58Um...
01:06:59Yeah.
01:07:00That should be it.
01:07:01Okay.
01:07:02Um...
01:07:03Yeah, yeah.
01:07:04Okay.
01:07:05Add to that.
01:07:06Okay.
01:07:07Um...
01:07:08Yeah, okay.
01:07:09Um...
01:07:10Yeah.
01:07:11That should be it.
01:07:12Okay, all right, so you're gonna drop the blade, right?
01:07:16No, I dropped the head and flipped the trap door.
01:07:19Oh, so I dropped the blade.
01:07:20No, I dropped the blade.
01:07:22You dropped the blade.
01:07:23Yeah, that makes sense, because...
01:07:25So, do you remember your lines?
01:07:30I don't say anything.
01:07:32You don't?
01:07:34What if I should say something?
01:07:36Um, maybe?
01:07:38I know a guillotine joke.
01:07:39Like, uh, a priest, a vagabond, and an engineer were gonna go to the guillotine, and they
01:07:46all get led to the public square, and the priest goes first, and he lays down, and he looks
01:07:51up at the sky, and he says, God, please save me, please.
01:07:55And the executioner says, is that all you gotta say?
01:07:57And he goes, yes.
01:07:58He pulls the cord, and the blade comes down, and it stops just an inch away from his neck.
01:08:04And the crowd goes crazy.
01:08:05He says, that's a miracle.
01:08:06You gotta let him go.
01:08:07They get up, and he walks away.
01:08:10And then the vagabond comes in, and the vagabond lays down, and he looks up.
01:08:14The executioner goes, you got any last words?
01:08:16He's a vagabond.
01:08:17He's like you guys.
01:08:19He didn't go to school or anything like that, so he doesn't have any words.
01:08:21And he pulls the cord, and the blade comes down, and it stops just like an inch away
01:08:26from his neck.
01:08:27And the crowd's like, apoplectic.
01:08:29They're like, this is a day of miracles.
01:08:32You gotta let him go.
01:08:32And so he goes away, and the engineer comes, and he lays down, very stoic, and he looks
01:08:38up, and the engineer says, you got any last words?
01:08:41The engineer goes, I think I see what the problem is.
01:08:46Maybe don't say that, though.
01:08:48Maybe don't.
01:08:49I could tell it.
01:08:50Yeah?
01:08:51Well, I like it, but it's scary.
01:08:54I don't know.
01:08:54A little long.
01:08:55Well, no one's come running out screaming yet.
01:08:59Give it time.
01:09:00The night he's young.
01:09:03You think you'll miss these haunted houses when they're grown up and actually celebrating
01:09:08your birthday on this date?
01:09:09You know, who knows?
01:09:11I mean, with Dave, he might be doing these for years to come.
01:09:14So be honest.
01:09:15Who comes up with the ideas?
01:09:17Um, it's a mix.
01:09:19You know, the boys normally come with this idea that's not yet fully formed.
01:09:23To say it politely.
01:09:24And, um, Dave then takes the idea a step further, and then the boys take it another
01:09:28step further, and then before you know it, you've got...
01:09:31A live guillotine.
01:09:32Exactly.
01:09:33I'll never forget that car scene last year.
01:09:36I'll never figure out how he got it to stop it in exactly the same spot in front of the
01:09:40group each time.
01:09:41Bungies.
01:09:42And the sound effects.
01:09:43Everything was timed just right.
01:09:46I'll never forget the year they had Jonah under the candy bowl at the end.
01:09:50Kids would reach in to get candy, thinking it was over, and then a hand would grab
01:09:54them from inside the candy bowl.
01:09:56I thought we were going to have to call an ambulance.
01:09:59Right?
01:09:59And when Alex came out of the refrigerator, who puts a 10-year-old in a refrigerator for
01:10:03a haunted house?
01:10:05Your husband.
01:10:06Hey, at least it was unplugged.
01:10:08You know, he's done some amazing work on these things.
01:10:11Yeah, he really does.
01:10:12And I think, you know, especially this year, he really needed to be doing this during this
01:10:17time, you know?
01:10:22Should we get the next group ready?
01:10:24Sounds like they're wrapping up.
01:10:25Let's go.
01:10:26Let's go.
01:10:44Let's go.
01:10:46Let's go.
01:10:48Let's go.
01:10:48Let's go.
01:10:49Hey, don't forget to shut this door.
01:11:10Everyone ready?
01:11:12Yeah.
01:11:12Ready.
01:11:13Yeah.
01:11:14Ready.
01:11:14Ready, Suzanne.
01:11:15Let's go.
01:11:45Let's go.
01:11:46Let's go.
01:11:47Let's go.
01:11:48Let's go.
01:11:49Let's go.
01:11:50Let's go.
01:11:51Let's go.
01:11:52Let's go.
01:11:53Let's go.
01:11:54Let's go.
01:11:55Let's go.
01:11:56Let's go.
01:11:57Let's go.
01:11:58Let's go.
01:11:59Let's go.
01:12:00Let's go.
01:12:01Let's go.
01:12:02Let's go.
01:12:03Let's go.
01:12:04Let's go.
01:12:05Let's go.
01:12:06Let's go.
01:12:07Let's go.
01:12:08Let's go.
01:12:09Let's go.
01:12:10Let's go.
01:12:11Let's go.
01:12:12Let's go.
01:12:13Let's go.
01:12:14Things were going wrong, but it wasn't over just yet.
01:12:29Did you hear that?
01:12:30The tape?
01:12:31I had no idea it was taped over something.
01:12:33Yeah, we had a few troubles of our own.
01:12:36It's okay. It's first run, there's always kinks to be worked out.
01:12:44How'd it go?
01:12:45There were a few, um, glitches.
01:12:48I think the guillotine was alright. Tough crowd though.
01:12:54Yeah.
01:12:55The night is young. Let's consider it a practice run, huh?
01:13:00Yeah.
01:13:02Okay.
01:13:09Young Jonah was overcome with so many bottled up emotions.
01:13:13About the haunted house.
01:13:15About his dad.
01:13:16About grandpa.
01:13:19That's when he realized
01:13:21he needed to let it all out.
01:13:32Jonah?
01:13:33Yeah!
01:13:35Let's go!
01:13:39Yeah, let's go!
01:13:49Woo!
01:13:51Yeah!
01:13:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:13:56Let's go!
01:13:57Yeah!
01:13:58Oh, my God.
01:14:28Oh, my God.
01:14:58Oh, my God.
01:15:28Speak to me.
01:15:29Oh, my God.
01:15:59Oh, my God.
01:16:29Oh, my God.
01:16:39Someone hold my blade.
01:16:41Are you ready for blood?
01:16:48Huh?
01:16:49Oh, I love blood.
01:16:54There we go.
01:16:56Oh, this is so much love.
01:17:09Hey, guys.
01:17:10Hey, how'd it go?
01:17:16It was terrifying.
01:17:18Great.
01:17:18I think we're in our groove now.
01:17:20Yeah, it's going to be a great night.
01:17:22Great work, guys.
01:17:22Oh, my God.
01:17:30Oh, my God.
01:17:32Oh, my God.
01:17:35Help me, please!
01:17:51Please help me!
01:18:05All right, that was the last one.
01:18:24All right, good job, guys.
01:18:35That snake scene, when the ropes fell, that snake scene, when the ropes fell, it was
01:19:05fun.
01:19:06Got them every time.
01:19:07Come on.
01:19:12How did your team go?
01:19:19It went well.
01:19:20It went really well.
01:19:21Yeah, it went well.
01:19:23Oh, man, that was...
01:19:28Yeah.
01:19:30You guys did it.
01:19:31Yeah.
01:19:32Well, we all did it.
01:19:37Come on.

01:19:58Whoa.
01:19:59Oh, yeah.
01:20:00Success felt great, but what was even greater was the warmth of friends, family, and the
01:20:22beauty of teamwork.
01:20:26Jonah and his dad especially learned that when life gets tough, the most important thing
01:20:31is cherishing the time you have with the ones you love.
01:20:40I love you guys.
01:20:46What was that?
01:20:50I love you guys.
01:20:57What was that?
01:21:02I'm letting out all my bottled up emotions like daddy did.
01:21:07That's a really good idea.
01:21:09Yeah?
01:21:10Get up.
01:21:11Get up.
01:21:12Ready?
01:21:13Oh my gosh, look at the time.
01:21:27Lucy, Charlie, JJ.
01:21:29Go brush your teeth.
01:21:30Get ready for bed.
01:21:31No Xbox, okay?
01:21:32Sorry buddy.
01:21:33I think they understood.
01:21:38Told you they would.
01:21:40And you know who's gonna love that book?
01:21:44Papa Dave.
01:21:45Uh, Mom and Dad, sorry to interrupt.
01:21:48What is it, JJ?
01:21:50I was just thinking maybe we could build a haunted house this Halloween.
01:21:54That would be a good way to keep the family tradition going.
01:21:58I think that's a great idea, son.
01:22:02We should ask Papa Dave if he wants to join.
01:22:18I don't know if he'll be able to come all this way, but you know.
01:22:26Yeah, I think you should answer that.
01:22:34Dad?
01:22:37Did you read the book?
01:22:40What'd you think?
01:22:47Yeah, yeah, I think the kids will love that.
01:22:52Okay, yeah, speak soon.
01:22:56All right, yeah, I think it might work.
01:22:58Honey house, honey house, honey house, honey house, honey house, honey house, honey house.
