00:00Hi.
00:17Hey.
00:21I know today's going to be difficult, so I won't ask you how you're doing.
00:27It just doesn't seem real.
00:31Yeah, I know.
00:35I got here early in case you needed help with anything before the service.
00:41I think we're good. Michael's here somewhere. He's handing all the logistics today.
00:45Okay. Of course he is. I'm glad we have him to lean on, knowing that Sonny and Carly won't be here today.
00:53No. No, Monica blamed Sonny for a lot.
00:59Taking me away from the family.
01:01It just took Monica so long to realize that it was my fault.
01:07And it was my choice.
01:09By keeping my distance from the quarter means I know I caused my mom a lot of rain.
01:13I think what happened in the past only made you living at that house for the past year that much sweeter for your mom.
01:23She was beyond happy to have her son back under her roof.
01:33Why do you understand that and he doesn't?
01:49And what does that say about my marriage?
01:52I can't answer that.
01:54But I also know that it is a lot easier to be brilliant when it's not your marriage on the block.
02:00You are a very insightful man.
02:04And an irreplaceable friend.
02:10That's a great picture of her.
02:12But she didn't really take any bad ones, did she?
02:18She didn't believe in them.
02:20Just another reason I respect that woman.
02:26How are you holding up?
02:28I don't know.
02:30I know I have to say goodbye to Monica today, but there's some part of me that just doesn't believe that it's possible.
02:40I know.
02:41I mean, none of this is happening.
02:43And even when she was sick, she still had such a presence in this house.
02:47In this family.
02:49Whether she's physically here or not, it doesn't really matter.
02:55This will always be Monica's house.
02:58I'm so glad we're all heading over to the church together.
03:11That makes it seem like this day might be, uh, bearable.
03:15Yeah, it does.
03:16Actually, I gotta head over right now and check on something for Michael.
03:19But I'll see you at the church.
03:20Okay.
03:21Love you.
03:22Love you, too.
03:23Sweetheart, are you ready to go?
03:26I don't know if I'll ever be ready.
03:29But I'm gonna stay strong, keep it together for Monica.
03:36You got the letter?
03:38Right here.
03:39What are you all standing around for?
03:43Let's go say goodbye to Monica.
03:45Oh, good.
03:46I was just about to call the nurse, but maybe you could help me?
03:52Hmm.
03:54What's going on?
03:57You can't possibly be ready for release yet, so why are you out of bed, huh?
04:04Much less all dressed up.
04:06I'm going to my mother's memorial.
04:07Jason.
04:08I am so sorry for your loss.
04:23Thank you for coming.
04:25Oh, of course.
04:26Now, speaking as the mayor, it's, uh, it's impossible to overstate how important a pillar of this community your mother was.
04:36She was right at the heart of it all, and I respected her more than I can possibly say.
04:42Thank you for saying that.
04:44She's also a friend of mine, and I'll miss her a lot.
04:49Yeah, me too.
04:50Yes, I'm sure.
04:53I want you to know that my mother was planning on coming today, but at the last minute she came down with a bug and she wasn't able to travel.
04:59Well, she's okay, right?
05:00Oh, yes.
05:01She's okay.
05:02She'll be fine.
05:03You know, it's funny.
05:04I can still remember the day that my mother and Monica made peace with each other.
05:09But in the end, my mother thought of Monica as a friend, despite all their past differences.
05:18Oh.
05:19Thank you for coming.
05:22It's the least I can do.
05:25Your grandmother was an extraordinary woman.
05:28I'm just glad that I got a little time with her since I, uh, got back.
05:34Yeah.
05:35Yeah.
05:36Let's go with that.
05:37I'll always be grateful that she let me live at the Quartermains when my dad was married to Tracy.
05:42And even when Monica threatened to throw out my dad and Tracy, she made sure to tell me that I could stay.
05:48Yeah, that doesn't surprise me.
05:50Yeah, my grandmother's toughness is how she protected her, soft heart.
05:55I think that runs in the family.
05:58Dr. Quartermain was one of a kind.
06:09I admire her so much.
06:10Everyone at the hospital did.
06:12It's true.
06:13We were all so honored to walk the halls with her.
06:16I'm a little surprised that Jason, of all people, is playing the role of host today.
06:21Yeah, you know, the family was supposed to be here by now, but it looks like he's handling pretty well.
06:27Excuse me.
06:29Michael, I'm so sorry for your loss.
06:34Your grandmother was a remarkable woman.
06:38And thank you both for being here.
06:40It's our honor to be here.
06:42We should go get us.
06:43Yes.
06:44Oh, the small talk must be torture for you.
06:52I could take it from here.
06:54It is, but it's okay.
06:56I want to thank everyone who's coming today.
07:00Thank them for honoring my mother.
07:03Are you sure that this is really, you know, a good idea?
07:07Because from what I was told, Monica's memorial is, um, private service.
07:13I'm her son.
07:14Yeah.
07:15Her son is still recovering from gunshot wounds.
07:17And she should still be in a hospital bed.
07:19Drew, nobody humanly expects you to...
07:22Go ahead and say it, Martin.
07:23The family doesn't want me there.
07:25Well, I don't care about them.
07:27I don't care about what they think of me.
07:30I have every right to be there.
07:33Yeah, maybe so.
07:35But things between you and Monica...
07:36This is not about how Monica and I ended up, okay?
07:40She's my mother.
07:42She loved me and she accepted me
07:44the second that she found out that I was Alan's son.
07:46And that meant something to us,
07:48even with the way things were lately, okay?
07:50She still...
07:52She reached out to me.
07:54What'd you say?
07:59I never returned her call.
08:01I just, I...
08:03I thought that she was calling because of the steps
08:05that I'd taken to, to protect Scal.
08:08You mean the restraining orders you've taken out
08:10of members of her family?
08:11I thought that she was gonna side with the rest of the family
08:14against me and...
08:15And I'll never know if I was right.
08:19I just never, I never imagined that it would be the last time
08:22I ever got a chance to talk to her.
08:23No.
08:24No.
08:25How could you?
08:26I think with everything going on, I just, um...
08:30I lost sight of how important she was to me.
08:33And I'm always gonna regret that.
08:36But I'm not gonna let my anger against the rest of the family
08:42stop me from saying goodbye to my mom.
08:49Thank you both for coming today.
08:51Of course.
08:54You know, my mom, um, she always told me how much she liked it
08:57when you dropped by.
08:58I loved hanging out with Monica.
09:01She was always such a good friend to me.
09:03And when Maxie had her heart surgery,
09:06it was Monica's hands that gave my daughter new life.
09:09She was a brilliant surgeon.
09:11In fact, she was just brilliant, period, you know?
09:14Used to drive me a little bit crazy when everybody always talked
09:16about the amazing Dr. Monica Quartermain,
09:19but truth be told, I was jealous.
09:22But, you know, the truth really be told,
09:25Monica was no saint, actually.
09:27Stop it.
09:28She was a brilliant doctor,
09:31and, um, her family mattered more to her than anything.
09:39It's nice that the Quartermain's asked you to speak.
09:41Do you know what you're gonna say?
09:43I've got a pretty good idea.
09:45It's actually kind of hard to narrow it down,
09:47because Monica and I have been through so much together.
09:52I've been hearing great things about the wellness group.
09:55Saved my life.
09:56So I've heard.
09:57The one here at GH is almost up and running.
09:59I'm thinking maybe that's something that I'd like to get involved in.
10:02Well, that's right. You're going after your degree.
10:04Trying. It's not easy.
10:06Yeah.
10:07Oh, but look who I'm talking to.
10:09The woman who has a full-time career and a family
10:11and battles a life-threatening disease and wins,
10:15and still has time to launch a major support group.
10:18Please, you are exhausting me,
10:21and I will take all the help I can get.
10:24I think I will just speak from the heart
10:27and hope that I can find the words to express what Monica meant to me.
10:31I hope it's okay that I'm here.
10:38I'm glad you came.
10:40I know it probably wasn't an easy decision.
10:43I'm not here as a member of the family.
10:46I'm here for Monica.
10:48She didn't even know we were related,
10:49and she welcomed me into her home.
10:52I wanted to honor her memory.
10:53I just hope other people don't get the wrong idea.
10:56You can't control what other people think.
11:00I appreciate you being here.
11:13Monica would have been so touched that you came.
11:16I didn't know Monica long, but she couldn't have been better than me.
11:20I wanted to pay my respects.
11:22She loved hearing you play.
11:24She always talked about how talented you are.
11:26True.
11:28Better go find my seat now.
11:30Yeah.
11:31Yeah, I mean, you're welcome to sit with us if you'd like.
11:35Oh, thanks.
11:37I'm okay. I'll see you all in there.
11:40Yeah.
11:52Well, uh, I mean, he's here, right?
11:54So that's a good thing.
11:55Yeah, it's progress.
11:59Gio's here.
12:00He wanted to honor Monica.
12:03Baby steps.
12:22I'm sorry we're a little late.
12:27Thank you for welcoming everyone.
12:29Uh, actually, Jason took care of that.
12:32That would have made your mother very happy.
12:37It's time to get this started.
12:52Drew, I'm not questioning your right to be there.
13:20right to be there. I'm just wondering if it's what Monica would have wanted. I know it is.
13:27Just like I know that we would have reconciled if we had more time.
13:33She wouldn't have called me if she'd given up on me.
13:39Look, we loved each other. She's...
13:42She's the only mother I've ever known.
13:47Hi.
13:47Hi. I rolled the dice. I brought some with me.
13:52I'll say it.
13:59And I'm not going to let the quarter mains keep me from Monica's celebration of life.
14:05They've already kept me from her actual life, and I'm certainly not going to let Jason pretend
14:10like he's Monica's only son.
14:12You know, you already sound angry, and you haven't even left the room.
14:17Yeah, well, I am angry.
14:19Exactly. And pardon me, but you just got finished saying you didn't want that anger to stand
14:23in the way of your ability to mourn for your mother. So I think you should be honest and
14:27ask yourself, you're showing up at that church really about Monica? Or is it just another way
14:33for you to screw with your family?
14:36On behalf of my family, I want to thank you all for coming today.
14:41We're here to honor Monica Bard Quartermain.
14:47Now, I'm sure none of you will be surprised to know that Monica had some very strong opinions
14:53about how this memorial should go. She was very clear that she did not want this to be
14:59a sad occasion. Rather, she wanted us to have a gathering of friends and family to remember
15:08her and to celebrate her and to celebrate her life. And I think Monica was right.
15:13As usual, this is a celebration. Because we were all lucky to have known Monica and to have
15:27spent quality time with her, whether it was personally or professionally. I cherish the years
15:37experience that I had with Monica. She was the anchor of our family. And she was always ready to
15:47welcome people into her house.
15:52Oh, come on, Tracy. Let's not argue. We're going to be welcoming a new baby into my house.
15:58The house that Alan gave me.
16:01Oh, God, Monica! Can you let one day go by without...
16:06Why are you laughing?
16:07Because it gets you every time.
16:10I have to be honest with you. Our house is... just feels very empty without her.
16:19And I think we're all a little lost without Monica.
16:24When you stood up for Drew as being part of this family, that's really when you became Asus in my book.
16:32You know, it's not going to be easy for him.
16:33People are tough.
16:34People are tough.
16:35Well, he is. He's tough. And so are you, Olivia.
16:42And this place wouldn't really be a home without you being here.
16:46I want you to think of this as your house, Olivia.
16:52It's going to take us some time to figure out how to live our lives without our love and our guidance.
17:03But at least for today, we don't have to do that because Monica has left one final message for all of us.
17:15To my dear friends and family, thank you for being a part of my life.
17:26I have so many beautiful memories of all of you that I hope you do, too.
17:34Please share them with each other and be happy.
17:41I'm sorry to leave you, but I've had a wonderful life that I truly loved.
17:47Just as I love all of you.
18:00I've known Monica almost my entire life because my grandmother, Audrey Hardy, considered her to be one of her closest friends.
18:10And they worked together at General Hospital.
18:14And my grandmother, who's not easily impressed, used to tell me that she had the utmost respect for Monica as a doctor.
18:25So when I started working at GH, you can imagine I was pretty intimidated to work with the Dr. Quartermain, chief of staff.
18:35But it turns out I didn't need to be intimidated because Monica was so patient and so willing to teach anyone who was willing to learn, no matter their position.
18:51When she looked at all of us, she saw people.
18:55She didn't see titles.
18:56She saw people.
18:58And that's exactly how she saw her patients, too.
19:02You know, they were people that she spent time with and connected with.
19:07And she treated them with honesty and compassion.
19:13And they loved her for it.
19:16And it was the same for all of us, all the staff at GH.
19:22We were her second family, and she took care of us.
19:26And she encouraged us every single day to be the best version of ourselves.
19:36And we loved her for that.
19:40She also inspired me to be the best version of myself.
19:46And on the days that I just couldn't, she forgave me.
19:56And I loved her for that.
19:59I wish I'd gotten to know my grandchild.
20:02I know.
20:03It doesn't matter how I know.
20:05I just do.
20:06Dr. Quartermain.
20:07Elizabeth, I am a widow.
20:10And I've lost Emily.
20:11I've lost AJ.
20:13Jason is my only surviving child.
20:17You tell me, if you were me, wouldn't you want to know if you had another grandchild?
20:26I was really lucky to be a part of both of Monica's families.
20:31And my son, Jake, was really lucky to be her grandson.
20:40Good morning.
20:41First of all, I have to say that I was truly honored when the Quartermains asked me to speak here this morning.
20:49Like Elizabeth, I, too, knew Monica for most of my life.
20:54As a matter of fact, some of you may know this.
20:57When I was a young teenager, 15 years old, I volunteered at General Hospital as a candy striper.
21:04And that's when I met Monica.
21:09And I was just so impressed with how poised she was, you know?
21:14And then as the years went on, I watched her navigate her way around the Quartermain family.
21:21Something that I think even the Quartermains themselves might say is not such an easy task.
21:29But then again, every family has their own unique way of expressing their love.
21:36And even though Monica married into the Quartermains, she was a Quartermain.
21:42Through and through.
21:45As a matter of fact, another job that I had when I was a young woman was working for Monica's father-in-law,
21:51Edward Quartermain, who was a formidable and intimidating man.
21:57But even at my tender age, I could see how much Edward truly loved and respected Monica.
22:06For your father's sake, I hope that we can all live happy lives from now on.
22:11You do love him as much as I do, don't you?
22:17Yes, I do.
22:19And I know the reason that he is feeling as well as he is.
22:23Because you've taken such good care of him since he's had his heart attack.
22:26You know, I think I could grow to like you, little by little.
22:30Now, now, don't get carried away.
22:32I know that Monica saw caring for her patients as an act of reverence.
22:54The only people she loved more were her own family.
22:59And I know she loved them very much.
23:01And she treasured what time she had with them.
23:06Sadly, Monica's life also saw an awful lot of loss.
23:11She lost her son, AJ,
23:13and her two daughters, Emily and Dawn,
23:17and then finally, her husband, Alan.
23:20But those losses,
23:22along with her battles against
23:25breast cancer and alcoholism,
23:29only served to deepen her compassion for others.
23:34This is from Maxie.
23:35She heard you were in the hospital.
23:37She tells everybody you're the person who saved her life.
23:41She knows you're going to be okay
23:42because you're a general hospital.
23:44And it's the best hospital in the whole wide world.
23:47And it has the best doctors and nurses.
23:49And she's right.
23:58You thank Maxie for me,
24:00and I will, uh, I'll write her a note.
24:04Monica's generosity, her philanthropy,
24:06are two of the biggest reasons
24:10that General Hospital
24:11and even the city of Port Charles itself
24:14are the amazing places that they are today.
24:18I will miss Monica with all of my heart.
24:24But I know that she lives on in her family
24:27and in her legacy at General Hospital.
24:32What?
24:46Mother, that's your cute.
24:54Are you really not going to say anything about Monica?
24:58I can't.
24:58Tracy has to speak.
25:02If she doesn't,
25:03she's going to regret it for the rest of her life.
25:05I agree, but it's not our call to make.
25:09You know what?
25:10Maybe, maybe she just needs someone
25:12to buy her a little more time.
25:15Lucy?
25:15Lucy?
25:16Lucy?
25:16Um, good morning, everybody.
25:27Um, I was not asked to speak
25:29or scheduled to speak.
25:31Um, why would I be, really?
25:34You know, uh, I am not part of Monica's family,
25:37and, uh, we weren't really friends, per se.
25:41But over the years, we have been called acquaintances, rivals,
25:45and, yes, most probably enemies.
25:49But I happen to have a very unique perspective
25:52on Monica Quartermain.
25:55And I think you all should know it.
25:58Like Laura, I, too, shared a passion with Monica.
26:13Everyone knows what I shared with Monica.
26:15The Nurses' Ball.
26:18As the founder and organizing the ball from the beginning,
26:22I worked very, very closely with Monica.
26:25She was chief of staff,
26:26and she was chairman of the board,
26:28and I could not have asked for a better partner.
26:32As a doctor, she saw the, um,
26:34devastating consequences of AIDS and HIV
26:37up close, firsthand.
26:39And it was so wonderful to know that Monica
26:42was as every bit devoted to that cause.
26:44as I am.
26:47And Monica performed at Minnie Balls,
26:49which I'm sure you remember.
26:50She was amazing,
26:51and she was also so amazingly generous
26:53with her time and her money,
26:56and I could not ever have done it without her.
26:59You know, I'm gonna really miss having somebody
27:01that, uh, cared as much about our very special event.
27:07Like me, she cared like I did.
27:09And, uh, of course,
27:13we also shared
27:14a husband,
27:17the dearly departed Alan.
27:20And I know what you're all thinking.
27:22I can see it on your faces.
27:23This is a bit
27:24unorthodox,
27:26the other woman speaking at the memorial,
27:29but, um,
27:31Monica believed in facing things head-on,
27:32so that's what I'm doing.
27:33Head-on.
27:34Alan, we hated each other.
27:36I mean,
27:38through the years,
27:39because of Alan,
27:40we really, really hated each other.
27:43I want you to stop seeing my husband.
27:46Because if you don't, Lucy,
27:48I will make sure that the hospital
27:50knows exactly what a cheap little tramp
27:52they have running the daycares.
27:54Oh, wait a minute, Monica.
27:56What?
27:56You know, you really shouldn't make
27:58such high-handed threats.
27:59What's that old saying?
28:00They say, you know,
28:00that old adage,
28:01people who live in glass houses.
28:04What exactly are you implying?
28:06And boy,
28:07Alan and Monica could fight.
28:10You know,
28:11on separate occasions,
28:12sometimes they would just leave,
28:13but they always came back
28:15because they were the loves
28:17of each other's lives.
28:20Always.
28:20Always.
28:21So I guess what we can learn
28:23from Alan and Monica
28:24is that love doesn't look the same
28:26to every couple,
28:27but a true love,
28:29well, we all know it when we see it.
28:32You know, over the years,
28:34we did make our peace,
28:36and I'm going to miss her,
28:39and I'm sorry she's gone,
28:41but I'm just so happy
28:44to know that she and Alan,
28:47they're back together again.
28:51There's no one else
29:03going to speak from our family.
29:04Lucy was right.
29:32Monica loved Alan.
29:34She loved him so much
29:36that she took me in
29:38when I was a baby.
29:41She, um,
29:42she chose to be my mother,
29:44and from that moment on,
29:47she, she was my mom.
29:51No matter how much
29:51I try to distance myself,
29:53no matter how much
29:53I try to push her away,
29:54she,
29:55she let me be my own person
29:58and go my own way,
30:01and she just had
30:02faith and trust
30:05that I would find my way
30:06back to her.
30:10And eventually, I did.
30:13Jason,
30:14no matter what has been said
30:16in anger,
30:17you are my son.
30:23And I love you.
30:25Baby,
30:26thank you.
30:26I wasted so much time.
30:33It took me so long
30:35to figure out
30:35that Monica wasn't trying
30:36to make me something
30:37I wasn't.
30:38It was that she really
30:39just,
30:42just loved who I was.
30:46You know,
30:46the same way,
30:47she, um,
30:49she loved everybody
30:51in her family
30:53unconditionally.
30:56She told me once
30:57that I,
30:57I wouldn't be able
30:58to see all
30:59the forms love
31:01could take
31:01until I had
31:04a child of my own.
31:06And she was right.
31:07It wasn't until
31:10I had a son
31:11that I realized
31:13what I saw
31:16on her face
31:17every day
31:18was love.
31:24You know,
31:25sometimes it would
31:25come out as laughter,
31:26sometimes frustration,
31:28but behind it,
31:30there was always love.
31:32And it was
31:33that kind of love
31:34that made her
31:37the best mom
31:38to Emily
31:41and AJ
31:44and to me.
31:47So,
31:48speaking for
31:50all her kids,
31:53I just,
31:56I just really want
31:57to say thank you.
32:00Thank you for being here.
32:04I don't think
32:20I said it enough.
32:25But I love you, Mom.
32:27I love you.
32:50Psst.
32:52What are you waiting for?
32:53Tracy,
32:57are you sure
32:57you don't want it?
32:59The family decided
33:00you would be
33:00the last one to speak.
33:01Get up there.
33:02People are waiting.
33:03Mother,
33:04everyone will be
33:04happy to wait
33:05if you need a minute
33:06to collect your thoughts.
33:07I don't.
33:08He's the one
33:08that's holding things up.
33:13Okay.
33:21Hi.
33:22I'd like to thank you all
33:24for coming out today.
33:27That means a lot to me
33:28and my family
33:29to see you all here.
33:31I grew up
33:32hearing stories
33:33about the legendary
33:35Dr. Monica Cortemain.
33:37You know,
33:38people,
33:38they talked about
33:39what a brilliant surgeon
33:40she was
33:41and how much
33:42they respected her.
33:44But to me,
33:45she was just grandma.
33:48It wasn't until later
33:52that I found out
33:53that she was
33:54this powerful woman
33:55busy saving lives.
33:58And while I understood
33:59that intellectually,
34:01it didn't feel that way.
34:04She always made time
34:05to sit with me
34:07and ask me about my day.
34:08And it didn't matter
34:11if I was
34:12in elementary school
34:14or at an office
34:15at ELQ.
34:17She, uh,
34:18she made the time.
34:21And I had kids
34:21of my own.
34:22She made time
34:23for them, too.
34:23I consider myself
34:26very,
34:27very lucky
34:28to have gotten
34:30to spend
34:31the time that I did
34:32with my grandmother
34:33over these past few years.
34:35And there's some
34:36consolation in knowing
34:37that
34:37I shall never
34:39really be gone.
34:41And not as long
34:42as we remember her.
34:44So I hope
34:45that you all help us
34:46in remembering
34:47and celebrating
34:49the incredible life
34:50that she lived
34:50by joining us
34:52back at
34:53at Monica's house.
34:59So,
35:00unless
35:01there's anyone else
35:02who would like
35:03to say something...
35:23I can go!
35:33I can go!
35:33I can go!
35:34I can go!
