On this week’s show, the YP’s football writing team of Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Phil Harrison to salute the gallant efforts of our League One clubs as they took on Premier League opposition in the third round of the League Cup.

Barnsley, Huddersfield Town, Doncaster Rovers and Bradford City all had giant-killing opportunities but, ultimately, it proved beyond them, despite some impressive performances.

It is in League One where Yorkshire continues to thrive, though, Bradford City going top of the table after beating leaders Cardiff City, while Barnsley, Huddersfield Town and Doncaster Rovers remain close behind.

At the other end of the table, we ask whether there is cause for concern at the New York Stadium after Rotherham United’s 1-0 defeat at home to Stockport saw the Millers drop into the bottom three.

We salutes Leeds United’s first away win of their Premier League season and their first goals from open play since their return to the top-flight.

In the Championship Middlesbrough moved four points, while Hull City – at home to Southampton – and Sheffield Wednesday – on the road at Portsmouth – recorded impressive wins. But there are still major causes for concern at Bramall Lane after Chris Wilder’s first game in charge saw the Blades extend their losing start to the season to six games, conceding late on to lose 1-0 at home to Charlton.

00:00Hello and welcome to Football Talk from the Yorkshire Post. I'm your host Phil Harrison
00:19and as ever I'm going to be joined by the Yorkshire Post football writing team of Stuart
00:23Rayner and Leon Wobshaw. On this week's show we salute the gallant efforts of our League
00:281 clubs as they succumbed to Premier League opposition in the third round of the League
00:32Cup. Barnsley, Huddersfield Town, Doncaster Rovers and Bradford City all had giant killing opportunities
00:37but ultimately it proved it beyond them despite some impressive performances. We move back into
00:43league action starting with Leeds United's first away win of their Premier League season
00:47and their first goal from open play since their return to the top flight. In the championship
00:52middle removed four points clear at the top maintaining one of just two unbeaten remaining
00:56records in the second tier. Hall City got back on track with an impressive 3-1 win over
01:00Southampton while Sheffield Wednesday produced one of the performances of the weekend with
01:04a 2-0 win at Portsmouth. Sheffield United however remained without a point as Chris Wilders returned
01:10to Bramble Lane resulting in an agonising late 1-0 defeat at home to Charlton Athletic.
01:16In League 1 Bradford City moved up to the top after a stunning 3-1 win at former leaders
01:20Cardiff City. Huddersfield were booed off the pitch following a goalless draw at home to bottom
01:25club Burton Albion while Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers suffered narrow defeats as did
01:29Rotherham United whose 1-0 home loss to Stockport saw them dropping to the bottom three. In League
01:352 Harrogate Town rediscovered the art of winning with a 2-1 victory at home to Shrewsbury. You're
01:40listening to Football Talk from the Yorkshire Post. Yorkshirepost.co.uk
01:46As mentioned we're joined by Stuart Rayner and Liam Wabshaw once again plenty to discuss this week.
01:51Chaps as highlighted in the intro we're going to start with the most recent action involving our
01:56clubs and that being in the League Cup during the midweek. Sadly no giant killing wins for us to
02:01cheer about but still plenty to discuss and plenty of positives. Leon you were down at Tottenham
02:08Wattsburgh Stadium to see Doncaster take on Spurs. A 3-0 defeat for Grant McCann's team but I presume
02:14you know judging by what was written and what's been I've seen elsewhere there was still plenty of
02:18reasons for them to be proud yeah? Yeah it was that said Phil it was it was a little bit worrying
02:25sort of 20 minutes in. It was funny sort of all the three Yorkshire teams on the night seemed to sort of
02:30roughly concede around the same time. Obviously Tottenham got the first one and then they got the second in
02:36in quick success and you sort of did start to fear a little bit for Rovers. The previous visit
02:43funnily enough in the mid-70s they got beaten 7-2 and given that sort of start I was sort of thinking
02:51about is it going to be another one of those another sort of cricket score but yeah in fairness
02:57I think the disappointing thing in the first time I mean I did the Brighton game at Barnsley as well
03:05it's so difficult to live with these top Premier League sides even when they switch it around a little bit
03:11they've got so much pace and power and I don't think it's just clubs in League One but I think
03:17across the EFL even the Championship they just don't play against those sorts of oppositions and it's just so
03:24difficult to handle them in in transition so there was there was that aspect of it but
03:29Doncaster was sloppy at set pieces and Grant McCann remarked on it afterwards both in terms of
03:36their own set pieces and and and defending them as well and it was a it was a poor first goal
03:42Ian Lawler it was it was a weak punch and it was a good finish from Paulinho but it was an avoidable goal
03:48and and the set pieces from Simon's caused them quite a bit of problems was a bit of a lack of
03:53organisation so that that was disappointing and Tottenham got to turn the look and they were
03:58looking every time they sort of counted on the transition they look they look like they could
04:03score but thankfully the Doncasters say they didn't and the second half was a different story they
04:09I think they got a bit more confidence and Spurs maybe psychologically eased off I mean the tie was
04:17barring something absolutely spectacular it was all but over so they sort of I think they eased
04:22off a bit subconsciously and it was played on on the terms that Rob was probably wanted in in the first
04:28half and just a little bit disappointing the kid conceded with the last kick of the game because
04:33I think they actually deserved to nil Spurs which would have been in the second half which would
04:40have been no mean fee you know going to a Premier League side and doing that and you're a League One
04:44club you're nearly 50 places below them in the pyramid but yeah there was there was plenty of I think
04:51positives in the round and yeah I think like like all the sort of Bradford as well it's you know it's a
04:58good good news story Don because they're getting this far and getting a real plum tie I mean I remember
05:04you know a quarter of a century before they were in they were in the National League and you know
05:08some of the destinations they were going to around London were you know teams like Hayes and and
05:14Kingstonian so it just shows how far they've come on on that level it would it would have just been nice
05:19to see them get a goal for the support because it was a big traveling support there were almost 4,000 and
05:26no mean fee that isn't it on a school night and um and people having to get back back to work I
05:33actually knew quite a few of them who were going down as well some of my uh some of my friends and
05:38it was a feral commitment but yeah I think more more positives than negatives and and certainly
05:44positive in the respect that it looked like it could be a good hiding after 15 minutes and
05:49thankfully uh thankfully it wasn't I think as well good for you know Ajayi played uh played uh
05:56played for Doncaster on the 19th good good for some of the young lads who really do aspire to play
06:01he made a lot of changes he made he made nine changes again as well so yeah he was constant with that
06:06yeah yeah I mean I think I think for both both Doncaster and Bradford were in a similar boat in that
06:11they've got such big games coming up on the Saturday I mean you know for Doncaster on the back of back-to-back
06:16league defeats you know looting away becomes a you know big game for them doesn't it so um it's a
06:22shame really to see teams water water down for that reason particularly when it's the underdog but
06:27it just happens and and you know sometimes it works well as it did for Doncaster at Middlesbrough so
06:33you know there's there's an element of you saying well those lads have actually earned the right to
06:37to go and to go and play at Spurs and uh yeah I I don't think I don't think for for those two off
06:44or for Huddersfield really much that happened last night could really have punctured the the feel
06:50good spirit around those clubs they've they've had really good starts as you say Doncaster have wobbled
06:55the last couple of games but it's been a really positive um you know uh positive season and so long
07:02as long as it wasn't a repeat of that last trip to Spurs to Spurs for Doncaster nothing is really
07:06going to ruin that yeah I think I think really sort of thinking about it would have been handy for
07:11for all three of them really if they'd have played played on Tuesday night really they gave them an
07:16extra that extra day and maybe they could um it'd be a bit more a few more sort of senior players
07:24yeah I mean don't obviously don't I think it was just two for Doncaster it was Owen Bailey and um
07:31I can't remember the other one off the top of my head but just thinking with Bailey it would have
07:35been a big decision because he's such an important player and he's all action he's energetic and
07:40I think they're gonna have to sort of um ask him to go easy in training I think because he'll
07:45obviously be needed at Luton so I think there was that aspect of it as well wasn't there just sort of
07:49and and as Stuart rightly said big games they've got to go to Luton and see town have got a long
07:55trip haven't they to is it Exeter and um obviously uh City as well at home to to Blackpool so I think
08:02that came into the equation as well it's just a juror cell bully though uh bunny though Bailey isn't
08:07he yeah 100 league games on the trot Grant McCann saying he never misses a trading session it's it's
08:12remarkable his yes stamina his flexibility but as Leon says you don't want to you don't want to push it too
08:18far because if he if he was to get an injury now he's such a blow he's been terrific and he nearly
08:22scored as well that was probably arguably because his best moment a really good sort of shot just
08:27before half time a brilliant save from the from the ladding goal for Tottenham I was on on his debut
08:32so uh I suppose his father at least he's uh did a story about his father being a a boy of Spurs
08:38fan so uh at least he'll have a team to follow for the rest of the uh for the rest of Tottenham's run
08:43but I guess the hope for Doncaster is just that they're you know it's the change of scenery
08:48just gives them a bit of a lift going going into the next game sometimes that can just be a bit
08:52refreshing and say particularly when you've had a couple of uh a couple of disappointing games but
08:57Doncaster's week will be almost entirely framed by what happens at Luton and and very little to do
09:03with what happened this person in terms of Bradford Stuart um special night for Randy Cook by the sounds of
09:10it as well and one which his manager says he'll he'll probably not stop talking about or something
09:15he said he'll be talking about it for the next 50 years
09:20exactly well I mean it's funny because Leon and I were texting earlier this morning about
09:25something different and and mentioned it it's it's the hope that kills you and really when
09:30when Newcastle's team sheet came out kind of all hope was not not abandoned because this is the
09:35Bradford team that beat Bradford club that beat Chelsea uh not that long ago but Newcastle didn't
09:41really play fair you know they rotated their team but they still have Bruno Gamarish playing who's just
09:46on another level Anthony Gordon Joe Linton Anthony Ilanga you know they put even even with you know a
09:54fair bit rotation they put out a serious team uh and Bradford like Doncaster rested players too
10:01Josh Nofill who we've raved about on this podcast on the bench Will Swan wasn't in the squad Sarsevich on
10:06the bench Tyreek Wright on the bench so I think as soon as they saw that team sheet I think it almost
10:12conditioned the Bradford fans not to not to build up too much hope about the result itself
10:17and then from that point on I mean really from the point the draw was made
10:22you just wanted Andy Cook to score a goal because you know he did his cruciate ligaments on New Year's Day
10:28he's been through absolute hell um this was only his third appearance all of them from all of them
10:34from the bench I think Leon was there when he came off the bench and scored two yeah being the trophy
10:39sort of fairytale moment and you think well part of you think surely you can't have another one but
10:46a big part of you thought yeah I think he'll I think he'll do this because there's just something
10:51about it and you know being a boyhood Newcastle fan he absolutely adored Alan Shearer who did his
10:57cruciate ligaments as a Blackburn player came back and scored at St James's Park on his return
11:02and it was a really Shearer-esque finish in the way he absolutely thumped the ball into the net
11:09um it was it was a it was a really good finish and it it just I wouldn't say it lifted everybody because
11:15um even though Bradford were 3-0 down at the time the fans didn't need lifting you know they were there
11:20to enjoy themselves to enjoy being top of league one but it just made it a really special night
11:25and and I think you know in terms of the game I think there's elements of what Leon talked about
11:30with Doncaster again Bradford conceded twice in two minutes bang bang 2-0 down midway through the
11:36first half and you worry that the roof's going to come in but I think they managed to hold tight for
11:41another what was it 50 55 minutes something like that a bit more um to keep it at 2-0 sounds a bit
11:49defeatist but that was a that was an achievement in itself you know to show that to show that spirit
11:54and that and that togetherness to just to just not cave in in the wake of a really good side and
11:59Anthony Gordon looked absolutely desperate to score he never managed in the end but you know he was
12:04he was really buzzing away he was on it I say Gamarish was was brilliant in some of the some of
12:09the balls he played so it wasn't like it wasn't like Newcastle were going through the motions
12:13and got a really competitive squad at the moment and and lads looked like they were
12:17competing for a place so as as we said before really a game where despite the result it could
12:24take a lot of positives from it and and cook such a popular person on the terraces and in the dressing
12:30room that I genuinely think his goal will will have lifted all of his teammates and make them all feel
12:36better about themselves going into this big game against Blackpool yeah I'll be maybe interested
12:42to see what how the handle cut with the with the league games now won't it I think he he came off
12:47right at the end uh I'm sorry he came on right at the end against Huddersfield but it was an unused sub
12:53wasn't he in the uh in the game at uh Cardiff and sort of look at Bradford's features I think they've got
12:59um they've got the obviously the game at Rotherham next Thursday then they've got sort of 10 days
13:06roughly before the next in action in the league it's wondering if sort of Alexander's thinking
13:11we boost his fitness further he might be in in with a real shout for some good good game time in in the
13:17in the Lincoln game on the 11th I mean who's to say we'll have to see but no it's been it's been
13:22certainly he's he's come back with a bang hasn't he with the two goals in the in the cup game against
13:27Grimsby and um a goal that'll tell his grandkids about at St James's Park so you know he's he he
13:35a lot of sentiment with his goal at Newcastle but he's he's certainly done plenty to suggest that he
13:40can uh he can be uh an important uh as you knew he might be really in in league one this season for
13:46Bradford and I think the thing is I it will be made to earn it I mean Leon spoke to Graham Alexander
13:52before the game and he said you know emotion wouldn't come into the selection you know if it
13:58was if it had been emotional at all he would have started him and he didn't you know right I asked
14:02him about it afterwards and he said he said well we brought him on because we needed him we were 2-0
14:07down and we needed a goal you know so with the way Will Swann started the season in particular
14:14Cook will have to earn his place it won't it won't be given three minutes but you know he gives
14:20he gives Bradford an extra dimension he's an extremely good player first and foremost so I
14:26expect him to you know to break into the side on merit but it will have it will have to be on merit
14:31I don't think he's going to be going to be given any any gifts uh to get along the way so so to to take
14:39his moment when he got it was just absolutely fantastic for him I think it's important time I
14:45think for Bradford until the next international break and then following that on to the next one
14:50you know that's when tables are starting to take take shape when teams have really been started to
14:56be to be taken seriously and you know but a terrific start for for Bradford on the back of the promotion
15:01last year and if they can sort of be in that um you know firmly in that top six mix by these after
15:07the after the uh the last international break in in autumn they're going to start to think hey we can
15:12have another really good season here and then the next bit is keeping you know trying to maintain
15:18that for the for the January window and then seeing um seeing what they can potentially bring in to
15:24to improve them further but uh yeah it's I think I just think it's a it's been a strong start by
15:30Bradford but you know I think they've got the capacity to sustain it and you know that's why
15:35Stuart's right to say this it was a bonus against against Newcastle but the big game this week is
15:40is against Blackpool that's the sort of that's the sort of game that if you say this you've got
15:45to be winning yeah and and I think I think they are makes a very good point it's it's about the
15:49Bradford fan sorry players believing that they can do it uh I don't think they're sure to believe at
15:55the moment but you need you need that reinforcement and as as you say as you tick off the international
16:00breaks and the milestones like Christmas and what have you if you're in the mix then you really believe it
16:05you know hopefully the board believes it when it comes to January we'll get ahead of ourselves there but
16:10but really the players the players need to believe they they can uh you know they belong in this uh in
16:16this division and they can get out of it you know the right way I think all the ties as quickly as a
16:22broader one it's just it should just show the sort of the big gulf really hasn't it between you know
16:29good league one sides and uh premier league sides even when they freshen it up I think all of them I did
16:34did the game on Tuesday at Barnsley there was a real element of a just in case on the bench wasn't
16:40there there probably was at Newcastle and there certainly was at at Spurs and um yeah Newcastle
16:45and Tripp here and people like that Walter Marder who they paid 69 million quid for yeah it's just
16:52levels isn't I mean obviously uh Goma Goma's got all the the headlines at um at Barnsley and you know
17:00they were really ruthless Brighton at at Barnsley and and they're a side who you know they don't
17:05have any European distractions you suspect they've probably targeted this and even Thomas Frank was
17:11talking about you know Spurs being in the mix for you know for four competitions this um this season so
17:18it does get derided a bit the league cup but I think it still has a fair degree of of importance for
17:24quite a few uh premier league teams and see you look at Brighton I don't think Spurs have won a
17:28domestic cup have they since 2008 or something like that last time wasn't it yeah so yeah it was a
17:36good day good days out for the for the Yorkshire teams but they were up against some uh some serious
17:42teams and not half I mean when when Leon talked about levels earlier on I couldn't help but thinking
17:46about leads at Arsenal I mean even some premier league clubs are not they're not on the same level so
17:50yeah there's no there's no disgrace and and certainly I I assume the Doncaster fans were the
17:55same at Spurs but certainly there was there was a realism from the the Bradford fans about what
17:59what they expected and and and I say it was just good that they were able to take some some positives
18:05out of what was you know a comfortable defeat obviously in terms of Bradford if ever there was a
18:11statement win Stuart uh that 3-1 victory at Cardiff on Saturday was it presumably yeah I mean to be honest
18:18a statement a couple of performances from my perspective because when they lost
18:233-1 at uh Doncaster we said on the podcast then it would be interesting to see how they react and
18:29the fact that they they bounced back straight away by beating Huddersfield and then to go you know one
18:34better by beating Cardiff who were top of the league at the time yeah it was a real it was a real show of
18:39force and you know um they've had a couple of injuries and things things to deal with um they've not
18:46they've not been sidetracked by that they've just they've just kept the ball rolling it's been
18:50it's been really good to see that that mental strength and that belief I was I was talking about
18:55really really coming to the fore because you know I think I think most people listening to this will
18:59know what a slim time it's been for Bradford for the last particularly the last six years they've been
19:04stuck in league two all that pent-up frustration and that that potential that you you feel is just waiting to
19:11be uncorked you know it's good it's good to see it finally coming out yeah I mean looking at um but
19:18I mean I think obviously a massive win for them against Huddersfield the first time in I think it's
19:24about 20 20 years or something that they've beaten them at home they've had all the sort of pats on the
19:28back and the the adulation about about that and it was a really really big moment and but can you back
19:35it up can you raise the bar further and they've done that and that suggests to me that the you know there is
19:41a real potentially a really serious element about about Bradford season that they're sort of sharing
19:47the load around the swan's got a few goals but quite a few others are chipping in they're getting
19:52one or two injuries they're not particularly worrying about it they they're using it's a real you know
19:57squad situation there and you know you look at some of the teams they've beaten as well not just
20:02Huddersfield and Cardiff they've beaten they've beaten Stockport they've beaten Luton they've beaten Wickham
20:09so quite a lot of the teams that people were talking about before the ball was kicked Bradford have
20:13turned them over so you know factoring in they've coping with injuries they've got momentum it feels
20:19like a club on the up they've got a lot of ingredients there that suggest that if they can just maintain
20:26uh their form you know until the sort of end of autumn winter when the winter winter when the tables take
20:34shape they're going to have uh a bit of a chance um Graham Alexander probably won't say as much but
20:39i think he'll know he's been in football a long time and um yeah i mean the ball's in their court isn't it
20:46absolutely yeah uh we've mentioned Huddersfield briefly obviously Nick was over there on when
20:52Nick Westbrook was over there on Wednesday night to see them lose 2-0 to Man City um i think there was
20:57mention made at the weekend they drew obviously they drew 0-0 at home against bottom club Burton
21:02Albion on um on Saturday uh obviously you know Leon the fans are entitled to have their say they pay
21:09their money etc etc but um Huddersfield have had a decent start under Ligue 1 i know there's a lot of
21:14a lot of expectation but but perhaps some of the fans have been a little bit too quick a little bit
21:19too harsh with their criticism maybe yeah i i do think so but i think it's the nature i don't think
21:25it's specific to Huddersfield i think most sets of football supporters sort of do that and you know
21:30in fairness to town you look at them you know the previous sort of probably three seasons really i mean
21:36they had the great escape and it obviously it was brilliant at the end but it was a pretty loud
21:40season until then and obviously the season after was a complete just you know three or four managers
21:47and just never got going at all and obviously last season as well i mean there was in the first part
21:53of last season it looked like things were coming together a little bit certainly at home and um but
21:58then it just just fell away really badly in the second half of the season there's not been much joy at
22:03at Huddersfield and that's not just specific to lee grant you know in under under you know the
22:09previous man managers i mean in the championship it was just a grim attritional fight to try and
22:14nick results and uh and yeah i think there was a just hope at the start of the season it was a great
22:20start against against orient that not really not a lot of talk about a new door and this that and the
22:25other but you know it is going to take time and teams are going to go like burn and they're going to
22:29they're going to they're going to drop in a low block effectively five at the back and say come
22:34and come and break us down so yeah it's they're just having a little bit of a little bit of a stumble
22:41i think i think the concerning thing for me is is is the sort of first half statistics they
22:47i think they've only scored three goals in the first half and they haven't scored one since i think it's
22:53mid-august so that is it is early season still obviously but that would that's a little bit of
22:59a cause for alarm just whether they can are they getting that intensity right from the off um you
23:06know other sort of just trying to control to just be a bit too methodical can they get it teams a little
23:12bit you know quicker from the off but yeah i do think it's still a little bit harsh i mean it's
23:19you look at league one and who's to say how it turns out but i i do think there's a potential for
23:24for it to be reasonably open this year and there's not going to be too much between the teams and
23:30others feel they're still in a you know it's early days but they're in a handy pretty handy position
23:34still aren't they just obviously next today next to the playoff so yeah you would like to see a
23:40a bit of patience but i i think it is it's just the modern day or quite a few of the modern day
23:45supporters at the minute and i think there is context at huddersfield given that it's been
23:49pretty lousy there in in the previous sort of two or three years at home and i think that i think
23:54that's been exacerbated this isn't to criticize what they've done at all but the way they've gone
23:58about things they've they've put themselves up there to be sure you know with all the signings
24:02they've made with lee grant and all his players been very vocal about no we you know we're we're
24:08we're reaching for the stars we're going for the title for automatic promotion sort of thing
24:13it's raised expectations among the supporters it it also encourages teams like burton to to go there
24:20and play very kick very cagey stuff you know whereas you know doncaster have been quite vocal as well but
24:26i don't get the sense that that's resonated too far beyond south yorkshire you know bradford um
24:34you feel like it's a sort of a little bit of a quieter confidence about them huddersfield
24:39because you couldn't you just couldn't avoid as a league one fan noticing what huddersfield had done
24:45um they've kind of embraced it and that's fine i said there's nothing wrong with doing that but it
24:50it does mean that you know when you're at nil nil after 50 minutes of a game sort of thing things can
24:57get a bit bit nervy and a bit twitchy but you know i didn't didn't see the burton game but you know lee grant
25:05was very much of the opinion that they did a lot of things right in that game um and there isn't too
25:11too too much cause to panic and you know we talk about this with with some of our other clubs as
25:16well sometimes you just need to keep a bit of context and and not get too too carried away good
25:21or bad and i think i think huddersfields you know have made themselves one of that one of those clubs
25:26this season with with all the ambition they've shown i think they were i mean i caught the highlights of
25:31the burton game they were a little bit unlucky weren't they i think as well the second half
25:34there was there was a few cleared off off the line and one of the interesting things is this obviously
25:40both radulovic came on didn't he against against burn and he obviously played in the in the city
25:45game and just wondering if he has a little i'm not sure about his long-term future but in the short
25:49term up until january will they have a little bit of a part to play i mean they haven't really
25:53he's he's possibly the nearest thing they've got to a to a target man even though he's not that
25:59physical but you he offers a bit of a different dynamic doesn't he i suppose he's got a bit of
26:05technique about him as well he's not just a lump who you bounce the ball off which he'll appeal to
26:09lee grant so he's possibly a good mix for that for that yeah yeah i just wonder in this yeah in the
26:15short term he might have a bit of a role to play money you know you know what i mean so and until
26:21charles is the interesting one as well he played as well against against city as well and you know can
26:26he he's obviously desperate for a goal and something to drop for him at huddersfield
26:31now could it be if he does get one i'll just feel like uh you know millstones come off him
26:37won't it really so and that you know that that could come into play for huddersfield as well so
26:43i'll i'll be fascinated to see how that how that one works out but one another little bit of a
26:48concern as well his injuries isn't it they're not nothing like that they were having sort of last winter
26:54when you you had to really feel desperately sorry for michael duff but they have got a decent squad
26:59but they they are getting a few you know a few untimely injuries herby kane the ball player midfielder
27:07who offers something he's going to be out for a good while with a with a groin issue i think the
27:11miss miller as well i mean when he played last season he was certainly one of the one of the better
27:16players so i think for all the decent squad strength they've got lee grant will be keeping his fingers
27:22crossed that there's not not too many uh others at the minute yeah it's it's less about lack of
27:27options it's more about what leon talked about a week or two ago about lack of stability really they
27:32need to they need to hit on the core of the core of the side and uh and get some stability and
27:37particularly up front it just feels like it's waiting for somebody to to grasp it really and and and
27:42demand to be that that main man do they have that 15 20 goal scorer in their ranks at the minute or is
27:50that a thing that will be resolved in january perhaps well alfie may's got got the record of
27:55one he's only got two goals this season you know charles and taylor have both got pedigree in terms
28:01of scoring goals but you know the history counts for nothing if you're not delivering uh if you're not
28:07delivering this year but you do feel like there's players there who can do it as leon says it just
28:11needs somebody to to get couple under their belt and get on a roll really and it's it's kind of up in
28:17the air as to who who that will be out of them he seems at the minute it just it's stuck on this
28:22playing this sort of soul front man with people around him to to support them isn't it so yeah it
28:27looks looks like he's gonna gonna stick that way i mean he has played sort of may on he's played him
28:32in a wide position as well he can play there but yeah so call me call me a little bit old-fashioned
28:38but i'd like i'd like to just see him through that through the middle um yeah you know especially in
28:43these sort of tight games where you just you just need the goal keeping through the middle but
28:48obviously the league around this is a lot more of them than i do
28:51it's so old-fashioned it's so old-fashioned it's dead right
28:57you mentioned earlier about keeping perspective fans keeping perspective um another of our teams
29:01which perhaps that can be uh addressed to is rotherham obviously um it was all case of narrow
29:06defeats apart from bradford and huddersfield being on hand by burton it was narrow defeats for the rest of
29:10our teams barnes obviously losing at blackpool uh and donny uh doncaster slip into a 2-1 defeat at
29:16home um in terms of rotherham they lost 1-0 at home to stockport and it saw them drop into bottom uh
29:23three um is there any reason to be concerned about matt hamshaw's future at this stage or are we
29:29are we worrying over nothing well there's definitely reason to to be concerned when they're dropping in
29:35the relegation zone because there's that i say that the expectation at rotherham comes from their
29:40recent record in league one but you know when leon talks about injuries at huddersfield i mean
29:44rather probably another level again you know that there's there's reasons for it but we all know in
29:51in football there can be reasons for it but they they only take you so far and at some point matt
29:57hamshaw is as aware if not more aware than anybody they they just they just have to start delivering
30:03and it it feels like at rotherham for probably since the start probably for the last 12 months
30:11it feels like it's constantly oh we'll be a really good team when we get these players fit and it's it's
30:17it's like the tax is just around the corner and it's never coming you know we we've never got to that
30:22point um where they've managed to get everyone everyone fit they they just need they just need
30:28a bit of a break really they just need a a lucky win somewhere and then and then to be able to back
30:34it up but um i do i do feel for him at the moment with um with the injuries they're having but he know
30:41every football manager knows when they step into the job you you know you've got to deliver results and
30:46and i say you can have all the reasons in the world for it uh it'll buy you time but it won't
30:52buy you endless time so i really hope for for matt hamshaw's sake because he's clearly is a good
30:56coach with a good coaching staff around it that that he can turn this around but more than anything
31:02i just hope he gets some luck with injuries so that he can actually live and die by by his own
31:07team rather than a sort of patched up version of it yeah there's a lot there's a lot of pressure on
31:12on the home form i think at the minute you know historically not just in the championship but
31:18last season as well they really have struggled struggled away from home and some of the numbers
31:23are just they're staggering aren't they really i think they've only won six or seven in about
31:2970 or something like that so yeah there's all sorts of issues away from home it's probably
31:34psychological as well isn't it with a fair few of the of the players and if you're not if you're not
31:39winning away and you're sort of not just chipping away at home getting a sort of decent quote of wins it
31:45really does intensify the pressure and you know as stewart said the the injuries as well that's
31:51that's compounding things and a lot of other things it's a transitional season for rotherham isn't it
31:57everyone knows last season they sort of went for it in the the sort of summer window of 2024
32:03under steve evans he gave he gave it the big salesman to the chairman and they brought a lot
32:07a lot of players in and it just didn't work did it let's be quite honest but but you still sort of
32:12stuck with a lot of these players who were on two three-year deals at 28 29 difficult to shift
32:18them if they're on decent money so and it's obviously impacted on the on the budget that
32:23i'm sure had in in the summer so there's there's a lot that he's had to contend with but you know
32:28stewart said he's he's been around the block he knows he knows the game he'll know that he'll
32:33just need regardless of these problems you've got to chip away and get and get you know and get your
32:40homies i mean they got one the other week against against exeter then but rotten fortune then
32:45obviously the man of the match in in homes who they've been desperate to bring in at the end of
32:49the window big strong center half bang he he does his knee and he's out for six seven weeks whatever
32:55it is so they've had no luck whatsoever but he's still just got to keep uh got to keep sort of chipping
33:04away and they'll be desperate to get nombe back as well won't they i mean he scored two goals in the
33:08the is it the opening day when against portvale i suppose some good in the respect that he was
33:14injured so he wasn't sold before the end of the window but they're still sort of left without him
33:19and he's you know he's a player he got i think he got 15 goals last year he was he's the most reliable
33:25scorer they had and they'll be desperate to to get him back um you know more so with the fact they
33:30brought etty in and i think on his day we've spoken before i think he's a i think he's a pretty
33:34a pretty good a good player but it's it's just how many times you get that day out of him because
33:40he's you know he's got a checkered injury record and obviously sharif's had not much luck at all
33:46so yeah they've just got a they've got to be wary and i'm sure they'll know that but um yeah there's
33:52a fair bit of pressure on the home phone the minute and we talked about supporters being you know grumpy
33:56because of the previous sort of couple of years like at Huddersfield have of it of it being sort
34:02of not not great fair and i think there's a bit of that at rotherham as well yeah and they're right
34:08to be as well but yeah i mean the the irony is i think it was i'm sure first two away games wasn't
34:13it he won his interim you know you hoped that that would be a a corner turn but um when confidence is
34:21that fragile sometimes it takes a bit more than what you know just one or one or two wins to to
34:27turn things so yeah difficult times for a rather i'm probably made more difficult by the fact that um
34:33you know barnesley and and and and there's the sizing sort of why do you why do south yorkshire have
34:38had such a such a good start as well but um yeah i i i feel like i feel like they're a club that
34:46need to sort of get to grips with the fundamentals and the infrastructure and and i've just sort of
34:51opted to kick things down the road kick the can down the road and when you do that you you have
34:56you have to get results you've taken away one of your one of your uh sort of big excuses but um
35:02but yeah you can't you can't discount how unfortunate they've been with with injuries and
35:07and the the toll that's taken on them desperate for bonus ball away do as well wouldn't it i think
35:12they've got exactly got man mansfield the local game on on saturday there'll be a decent following
35:17there even even accounting for the historic by the way from i'm still i still think there'll
35:23be a few millers there then they've got barnesley as well not not long after you know that would be
35:28so big for them if they could get a win in one of those two games wouldn't it just to sort of
35:32lift the weight a bit off hamshaw's shoulders and just make everyone feel that a little bit better
35:36yeah definitely definitely okay let's move up to the uh premier league uh for the next uh next
35:44discussion um leeds united obviously our only team up there um you were at molyneux uh stuart you got
35:51the uh you drew the short uh the straw not short straw i don't know why i said that uh you drew the
35:55store to get down to molyneux on saturday leeds won 3-1 uh first away win of the season first goals from
36:01open play um plenty of reasons plenty of positives for daniel farkin fans to take from it albeit over
36:08a team that hasn't won a game yet this season yeah just just what the doctor ordered i mean wolves
36:14were really poor you'd have been disappointed if you hadn't beaten them but you know the challenge
36:18was there they they took it up and the thing that the thing that struck me really was um in a
36:24former life when i uh when i used to cover sundland um sam allardyce knew a thing or two about avoiding
36:31relegation even though he didn't manage it at leeds always used to talk about have more have more
36:38more points than games played that was his big thing all the way through the season and so far you
36:43know we're very early days but leeds have done a good job again about getting ahead of that curve
36:48winning at everton on the first uh on the first day gave them a bit of leeway when they went to arsenal
36:54play newcastle played fulham uh and then wolves again has just bought them a bit of bit of leeway
37:01for bournemouth and tottenham which will be two difficult home games and you know leon was talking
37:06about it last week how they have to give something back to the fans at ellen road i think that's dead
37:10right i think they need performances in those games and they need goals in those games to back it up but i
37:15think like the fulham game because they've sort of got ahead of that curve i think they can sort of
37:22they can almost judge those games it sounds a bit anathema nowadays but they can almost judge
37:27those games on the performances rather than the results and you know i think as long as they're
37:31putting a good show in those next uh in those next two games and the games coming up after the
37:37international break um they've got um they've got burnley and west ham and they're two real opportunities
37:44to again cash in and get a get ahead of that curve but yeah they put they played really well you know
37:50they they they conceded first and one so that was another tick in the box um calvert lewin's goal will
37:57do him a lot of good um stacks free kick might make a few defenders think twice about jumping into a
38:03tackle around the box because that was a that was a brilliant finish okafor's goal will just make him
38:09believe he belongs in the premier league which is you know something fark has talked about with
38:13regards to his his forward players kardalo backed up a brilliant performance at uh full-on with a
38:20another couple of big saves um you know they're not there they're not the finished article by any means
38:27but it was it was a real encouragement because it put right some of the areas that were just making
38:33people a bit twitchy uh going into that game whilst maintaining the good things from the in the first
38:38four four league games of the season yeah it seemed to tick a lot of boxes didn't it you know goals in
38:44open play and obviously calvert lewin you know brought him bought him for the to get those sort of goals
38:52really wasn't it you know the goals and and he did that and no let's not underestimate teams will get
38:58promoted winning away from home it's as rare as hen's teeth you look at it last season i don't
39:02think what was it southampton last year's winning full stop leon but yeah yeah away from home i mean
39:09i think didn't ipswich win at tottenham but i can't remember too many others really and
39:14it was probably one of this early so that's a real that's a real tick in the box uh for lees to you
39:20know to do that and do it not just a team who who will come up with them as well you know a team
39:26who've been in the premier league for a few years so yeah i mean i think i mentioned it last week and
39:30then i think you look if you looked at the start of the season you just saw that if you're a leeds
39:35fan you said everton yeah we might win that we might we might nick a win they've done that arsenal
39:40away most everyone would have written that off let's be quiet on it even you know even the most
39:45optimistic leeds fan then so then you sort of look at newcastle yeah job you know we might get a good
39:51time early season they draw they've done that two away games uh fullerman and wolves probably thought
39:58yeah if we could nick a win from from one of those two we're we sort of on par and it's you know
40:03possibly the same with these two home games as well now isn't it they've got um bournemouth and then
40:08spurs if they can get three points out of six he probably won't say as much um daniel fark would want
40:14more but i think he'd be reasonably happy wouldn't he really and probably most leads fans would as
40:19well yeah it'd be great if they got some more but yeah at the minute they're sort of they're on they're
40:24on sort of schedule at the minute they're not going the key is they're not going into that but
40:28because we know we don't born with a very good team they're not going into that bournemouth game
40:32and it's not a must win for them it's not a squeaky bum game already they can play with a bit of freedom
40:38you know they can sort of show that attacking side that they're going to need to show at home to
40:43to have the to have the fans on their on their side and it just it like the everton game it just
40:50felt like a win that's just just bought them a bit of breathing space and the other side of it is
40:55wolves looked an absolute mess yeah you know elsewhere at the weekend aston villa look
41:02west ham um you know forest have got their got their troubles and i i do think that european football
41:08will sort of add to that once they get into the thick of that unlike in the last couple of
41:13seasons those the the rest that you know the rest of the relegation pack feel closer to the newly
41:19promoted sides it's not it's not you know last the last couple of years you've come up and you've
41:25looked at it and you thought yeah who can we finish above i think this season there's teams that you
41:29genuinely can have aspirations at this stage of the season you know that some of these clubs could
41:34sack managers could have a have a extravagant january but they look catchable teams and i think that's
41:41important for all the newly promoted teams there's there's cause for hope from themselves and from
41:46others okay um let's move into the championship now uh well i have a quick word about borough um
41:53we spoke a bit about him last week but leon are now four points clear at the top of the table are we
41:57looking at a genuine contender for promotion or is it as with perhaps most most things at this stage
42:03still too early to say i think it is a little bit but i think there's there's some there's some
42:07positive signs for borough they're they're good impacts from the bench i mean they showed it against
42:13west from i don't mean they were particularly brilliant against west brom but you know they
42:17still they still found a way to win obviously strellick got his big money bye for them he got his
42:23got his first goal and then so the lad who came on certainly as well he's got a you know really well
42:29worked uh well worked team goal and yeah i think i look at middlesbrough's sort of transfer business and
42:36you know there's it looks to be a pretty good balance there like i said last week they've
42:40they've got the the sort of season championship operators they've got the alfie jones they've got
42:45uh callum britain people like that who've sort of been around the block know what the division's
42:50like have been successful alan brown is as well then they brought the sort of young young players who
42:57who they feel they could develop and hopefully you know blossom and potentially sell sell on you know
43:03the hansons of this world and you know the fuel as well senny so yeah i think the balance is there
43:10and um yeah i mean look what it's um you know for five wins out of six and and unbeaten obviously they
43:18go to you know they'll go to southampton next i mean most people would have probably thought it'd be the
43:24other way around you know southampton you know at the top but they've made a bit of a slow slow
43:29start and then they've got i think they've got portsmouth away yeah yeah i think if they can get
43:36a win at um southampton they've had a slow start but they've still got some very good players on on
43:40paper that would suggest that they're they're pretty serious yeah i think i think that's three
43:46difficult games really uh southampton stoke and portsmouth away but um now's the time you want
43:52them to be playing difficult games when the confidence is up yeah and the belief is there you
43:56know you're gonna have to play them at some time and they just feel in a really good place you know
44:00watching on the telly on friday what you know even more than the game just watching uh rob edwards
44:07going around the ground at the end with the players you know it felt a bit like sheffield
44:11united you know when they were on a roll last last season that that connection between supporters and
44:17and players and manager that that positivity you know the the football fan in you would would look at
44:24west brom on a friday night and think oh this is where we're going to come unstuck but to
44:28to come and particularly you know tune a lot of cruising and west brom scoring that like that late goal
44:34you get twitchy again so to come to come through tests like that that's exactly the the sort of
44:40mindset you need to be in for the for these games coming up and yeah we'll wait and see how they emerge
44:45from them but at least there's a there's a positive momentum building there and that can take you an
44:50awful long way in uh in well in any football yeah it's early days they're making the riverside
44:55a difficult place to go and you know edward spoke about that when he came in that was one of the first
44:59things he needed to do seems to be doing that um i think another thing as well we talked about teams
45:05handling injuries butter have sort of done that they've had a few injuries at the back haven't they
45:09lenigan played one game and then he's come come out obviously edmondson came off um
45:16against west brom um fries missed a couple of games as well so the sort of handling little pockets of
45:22adversity which is they didn't particularly do that so well certainly in the second half of the season so
45:27i think that uh augurs well as well and you know stewart's right to say about edwards i think he's
45:33he's really brought his character and his personality to the role as well and um
45:38you know he really has gone gone down well with with supporters in the way he sort of
45:43communicates and his and his passion is there to see and it looks a good it looks a good team that
45:48he's got there behind the scenes with uh ad vivash who was widely credited as being the the brains of the
45:55operation at coventry under under mark robbins he's uh getting a lot of a lot of kudos and um
46:01yeah it looks it looks a decent mix there i mean it's pretty uh pretty good uh weekend generally the
46:07championship for our for our lot i mean hall had a great win at home against southampton 131
46:12sheffield wednesday beat uh portsmouth on the road 2-0 which is probably one of the wins
46:16uh week weekend but leon you were down at bramble lane to see the return of the messiah otherwise
46:22known as chris wilder um if he wasn't already uh yeah he's he's he's no doubt fully aware of the
46:30issues that he's inherited on his return isn't he yeah i mean stewart did the i think he did the first
46:35couple of presses um when it when he came in and um yeah there was a really positive good vibe but it
46:42was a little bit of a reality check you know he's he's an honest football man is chris wilder and he
46:47you know he came in and said yeah maybe i've sort of underestimated the the problems here and um
46:54yeah you sort of look at i mean on the press release when he came in there was there was talk of him
46:58yeah coming to sort of you know get them get the club's mojo back and still mentioning words like
47:03promotion and look there's still still early days but you sort of look at it in terms of the
47:08with the pure maths the 46 games have lost six so there's 40 games left in the season how many
47:15points you need to get in the playoffs 75 so that's sort of 24 if you look at it on the basic level
47:22that's 25 wins in the next 40 games i mean that's easy yeah easy yeah it's serious numbers that isn't
47:30it really so yeah so i think even though it's early the clock is ticking a little bit if they don't get
47:34a win in the next couple of games before the next international break then they've got
47:38two or three after that then you sort of you know 10 11 games in and you've only got a couple of wins
47:45there yeah you know that's uh that would be a worry but i i think i i tweeted some something and i mean
47:54there is a con there's quite a few concerns that they haven't scored since the opening day of the
47:59season something nine and a half hours in the league the big statistic for me is the fact is
48:05the chance the sort of on target chances they've only had 13 on target chances this season in the league
48:14six came in the opening game of the season against bristol city when they got hammered yeah so they've
48:20they've had seven on target attempts in five games yeah i mean that's that's frighteningly
48:29frighteningly bad isn't it really and it puts a it puts a hell of a lot of pressure on your defense
48:33doesn't it to um to get things right and you know it's a new look defense isn't it they've
48:39they brought some ganger in they brought mcginnis and things like that take time and you know if you're
48:45still talking about promotion and this that and the other you've got to get those relationships
48:50nailed down very quickly haven't you you look at them in midfield stuart's saying more than me but
48:57you know you've got a young lad in matos there you've got siddy peck they're still you know they're
49:01still babies really aren't they in terms of the of the careers there's a hell of a lot on on their
49:05shoulders listening to to wilder the other day you know it's clear he's desperate to
49:10for for for tom davis to to get a run free of injury just to get someone in there and have his
49:17experience and um yeah it's it it's it's worrying and they really do need need to to get a win from
49:26somewhere very very quickly they've got a big game at oxford at the weekend one of his former clubs
49:32they had a good result at uh bristol last last weekend and um yeah you you just worry in the
49:40here and now if they lose again at oxford you're thinking well you know where's the sort of next
49:45win sort of gonna gonna come from so yeah it's concerning time because he's sort of he's having
49:51to build a new side as well as you know about getting promotion but you've got all these new
49:55players that made eight and nine signings at the end of the window um you've lost the first six games
50:01and there's the pressure's on to just get some results very quickly and it's it's not always easy
50:06to do when you've got a load of new players who you're having to to assimilate and um and then
50:12get results straight away it's it's hard so tough tough um times at the minute for sheffield united it
50:18was you know just every side who has problems and they're down among the dead men they always concede
50:25those sort of goals late in the game which did which they did against charlton and um yeah it's it's just
50:30the way it's going for them at the minute yeah i think people from the outside probably look oh chris
50:35wilder's back again just slip back into the old routine but even though it's been quite a short
50:39period of time so been a lot of change you know six of that playoff final team gone 12 new signings
50:46in um you know the coaching staff has had to change because jack lester's uh gone to brentford in the
50:51interim so it's not it's not simply a case of just picking things back up i mean i'll be honest i i thought
50:56like probably a lot of people thought just sort of complacently thought while this first game at home
51:01will kind of look after itself and then you'd sort of yes down the line yeah it just shows what
51:06momentum does and and and that that's that that leon came out with at the weekend that really did
51:11leap out to you i mean i was at that bristol city game we referred to and you looked at it and you
51:16thought yeah this is a team that's going to create chances the problem is they're going to concede
51:21so many but when they when they're not even creating chances since then and that is a real worry
51:26because as leon says the whole defensive unit is getting used to one another and it that's the
51:31part of the team where you most need to understand each other and have those relationships there's a
51:37big there's a big job ahead and there's there's a lot of pressure because you know wilder will put
51:42a huge amount of pressure on himself um you know he obviously doesn't want to uh you know muddy his
51:48reputation or let his club down or anything like that and as i've alluded to before there's sort of
51:53the pressure that comes with the parachute payment but you know again as leon referred to earlier you
51:58can't be you can't be thinking too much about promotion right now it's one one thing one first
52:03things first get out of the relegation zone get comfortable and then you can start looking upwards
52:10um but they've got to be got to be realistic with themselves about where they are and what what's facing
52:15yeah it's small icons i mean they nearly got that the first you know first clean sheet that'd
52:19have been something wouldn't it exactly you know not ideal they wanted to win but they were on the
52:23the cusp but at least doing that at half time while i said look just don't concede you're not
52:27obviously not playing we want a clean sheet and then obviously lo and behold the score at the uh
52:33score at the end so yeah it's it's tough going
52:37definitely definitely okay um let's wrap things up with our uh our uh now traditional team of the
52:43week and player of the week i think i've got it right i think last week leon you were on player of the
52:48week so yeah we'll come to you for the team of the week and stuart we'll come to you shortly after
52:52for the player of the week and i know you both disagree with each other on on both so uh uh
52:58we'll start with you uh leon and the team yeah there's been a few sort of haves and sort of
53:04have have not really hasn't obviously uh bars they got beaten at the death rotherham wasn't a good day
53:10for um for for donny either uh huddersfield disappointing jaw but no on the other hand
53:18you've got middles with carrying on the momentum spoken about away wins being as rare as hen's teeth
53:24in the premier leads um you've got mentioned harriga as well they're having a bit of a sticky time and
53:29they've managed to obviously get a win against um won't win against shrewsbury terrific win for
53:36bradford was it 20 25 years since they've been to cardiff backing up uh backing up the uh
53:42huddersfield derby i think all things considered given obviously the the massive sort of behind
53:48the scenes narrative and and the chaos and which you know seems to be continuing the pace you've got
53:54to you've got to plump for sheffield wednesday in terms of their win at uh at portsmouth you know
54:00a real standout result and um you know all credit to uh or credit to the young lads who performed
54:06our memory there and and the old stages such as barry bannon and um you know fair play to henry
54:12pedderson as well you know he will have enjoyed his his uh glass of wine on the coach on the way home so
54:18i'll go for sheffield wednesday yeah i mean just just on that i think i think it was last
54:23last week we talked about you know the the young players who would sort of push themselves forward
54:28at sheffield wednesday and i just find it quite heartening that at sheffield wednesday
54:34cup performance is counted for something because you'll often see players dipped into cup matches
54:39at various clubs have a good game and then they're straight back yeah you know on the bench and in
54:44the case of in the case of the sheffield wednesday plays it was a couple two or three cup games rather
54:49than just one in isolation which is probably an important difference but i was really pleased to
54:53see george brown and ernie weaver in the in the starting lineup um by all accounts ernie weaver
54:58played very well at center back not surprised about that at all and george brown got his goal so um
55:04you know certainly they're they're up there with players of the week for me and as as leon's announced
55:10uh mentioned already barry bannon is you know just the player that sort of holds it all together and and
55:16you know for all that he gets hammered for it uh when alan hansen said you can't win anything with
55:22kids he wasn't far wrong you can't win anything with only kids you know you do need that experience
55:26around the main was talking about sheffield united's midfield meeting tom davis you just you just do
55:31need that that guidance that someone like um like bannon can bring and mention leeds but i didn't
55:38mention gabriel goodmanson he obviously had a bit of a nightmare scoring the winning goal for full
55:42them the the previous week he he was excellent in his performance um say i've already alluded to
55:49to stack and calvert lewin michael cooper by all accounts well leon sorry michael cooper had a very
55:55good game reading your team of the week yeah again having had a had a shocker at ipswich really so that
56:01was that was an important um tick in the box for them but i'm um obviously andy cut the fairy tale of the week
56:08but for my player of the week i'm going to um go with someone who we haven't mentioned at all this
56:13week we haven't mentioned much yet this season but ollie mcburn has been a revelation for a whole city
56:18team that just didn't score enough goals last season i think he's on four goals and four assists
56:24already this season um he's been everything everything i hope they would be as a as a free transfer
56:31signing and it's really good to see him just getting back into the groove of things and doing what we
56:36what we all know he can so yeah i'm going to go with mcburney you're supposed dot co dot uk
