00:00It seemed like as the day went on, there was a bit of a crescendo when it came to those that I saw on social media and elsewhere who are paranoid about Jason Tatum returning.
00:15He said, I think the audio that we played yesterday, Shyam, he was talking about coming back this season, and we talked briefly about that, and why would you want Jason Tatum to come back when you have no chance whatsoever?
00:30If the guy wants to play, and his recovery seems to be moving along at a rapid rate, why not let him play?
00:41Hey, you're big on this. You don't want him to play at all.
00:45I think Courtney and I are in the same camp when it comes to this. I don't want him to play only because I know an injury like that will take a year for you to feel comfortable to being back who you were.
01:01So why am I having to play in meaningless games when I could say continue to rehab, continue to feel comfortable?
01:09Well, they're not meaningless to fans. They're not meaningless to the game.
01:14Yeah, but people know if you're buying a ticket this season to see the Celtics, you're not seeing Jason Tatum.
01:19So it's not like these people are going to be disappointed when they get there and Jason Tatum's not on the court.
01:24I agree with Wiggy. I don't want to see him this year. I don't want to necessarily say it's meaningless games because who knows?
01:31They could go out there and surprise everybody. And if that's the case, we'll have a different conversation in December and January.
01:36But right now, where we stand, what the team is in front of us, my expectations look like this is going to be a meaningless season.
01:43Right. Going in. Who's going into it other than people that, you know, listen, I love the Celtics like everybody else.
01:51But you're living in fantasy land if you're going into it like, OK, the Celtics could do damage this year.
01:56Just looking at their team and looking at their roster. So I'm going into it like this is going to be a meaningless season.
02:03I don't want our best player and the guy that helps us win championships rushing back for some things that don't count.
02:12And when do we find this all out? When did this story come out that maybe he'll play this year?
02:16Tuesday, I think, is when he first started to talk about it.
02:19I believe today they introduced Bill Chisholm and they have media day on Monday.
02:24The only way anybody's talking about the Celtics right now is surrounding Jason Tatum because nobody believes the team's going to be a true contender without him.
02:31So this is just the organization trying to get some pub before the media day on Monday.
02:36Yeah. Yeah. I thought it was interesting that he said that after the in the immediate aftermath of the injury, he thought the Celtics were going to trade him, which I thought was interesting.
02:48Oh, he said that? Yes. Yeah.
02:50Yeah. So. Oh, make him think that drew blood. So.
02:55Yeah. Yeah. I thought it was. I like how Tatum is so honest.
03:02I don't know. He's refreshing in those conversations, like hearing him talk about his own mortality as a basketball player, how, you know, everything.
03:11Think about where they were entering the playoffs.
03:13They were the overwhelming favorite to win back to back championships.
03:17They breeze through the first round.
03:19Then they're against the Knicks who are inferior.
03:22And in game six, he goes down game five, end of game five.
03:27Game five. Yeah.
03:28And it's like they're back at the bottom of the mountain.
03:31It's just so it's crazy.
03:33Honestly, that that was as demoralizing an end of a season as you can possibly get.
03:38And I think it just shows you his value, the fact that he's out and everybody's like, like Curtis said, you're back at the bottom of the mountain.
03:46And I think, yeah, they could make the postseason.
03:49Could they be a playing team?
03:51Could they be a seven seed?
03:53Yeah.
03:53But I don't think anybody.
03:55What's their magic number?
03:58I don't mean, I like these.
04:01Here's a tax Subaru of New England tax line that says they should trade him.
04:06He will never be the same player that he was.
04:08Great time to trade him.
04:09Wow.
04:09Talk about value.
04:10Yeah, that would be.
04:11And that's why when he said it, he thought he was going to get traded.
04:14I'd be like, why?
04:15Why would any team want a guy who is just blue as Achilles out?
04:20So it would be stupid for the Celtics to do that.
04:22You wouldn't get much value.
04:23And people say that he's never going to be the same player.
04:26He's still so young.
04:27And Jason Tatum, to me, I don't know him personally, but seems like a guy who works his ass off day in, day out.
04:32I think that he's going to do everything in his power to get back.
04:34It's not like an Aaron Rodgers where you're looking at this great talent who's at the tail end of his career.
04:39He's older.
04:40Jason Tatum's in the prime right now.
04:41Right.
04:42Like, that would be a tough way to go out if that's the case.
04:45The way I look at it is Kevin Durant did the same thing.
04:48And Kevin Durant was older.
04:50And Kevin Durant came back.
04:52And he was the same player.
04:54Like, Kevin Durant was the same player that he was before the injury.
04:58And he still looked at it.
04:59Now, granted, he don't win.
05:01You know, the teams that he was on are struggling.
05:03But I think there are a lot of people out there that still see Kevin Durant as being one of the top ten basketball players in the NBA.
05:10So, Tatum getting back to what he was, I don't see him not doing that.
05:16And the other thing, and I heard, it might have been Gilbert Arenas talking about this, is that it was his right leg, which is not his power jumping off leg.
05:31And Tatum's not really known for being, like, an explosive jumper.
05:36So, this is something that might not affect him as much as if it was his left leg because he's a one-footed jumper.
05:44So, you know, there's a lot that goes into that.
05:48And seeing that, and you look at Tatum's game, you go, oh, okay.
05:51You know, he does a lot of things.
05:53Well, he is.
05:53He did talk about his, he's back to his first basketball, quote-unquote, basketball workout.
06:01So, and he says he has a date.
06:04He and his doctor agreed on a date that he wanted to make his return.
06:08And so, I guess the question becomes, if you're the Celtics, do you say sorry?
06:15We don't, we appreciate the effort.
06:17But I don't think you can tell Jason Tatum.
06:20If he worked his ass off to come back from the Achilles, I don't think you can tell him that you don't want him playing.
06:25You know what the biggest question I would ask, Greg, and I would feel comfortable, and I don't know it.
06:30And I know guys have blown out their Achilles, but I've never asked.
06:33What does the doctor say about re-injuring that?
06:38Is it harder to do?
06:39Because sometimes it's harder to re-injure it after surgery.
06:42So, if it's a lot harder, then I wouldn't feel as bad.
06:45This is Ed from Maine.
06:47Hello, Ed.
06:48How are you guys?
06:50Listen, there's no way he is not going to play this year.
06:53I'm a fat, out of shape, 62-year-old that tore my Achilles last year.
06:58I didn't put the work in.
06:59I feel like a million bucks.
07:01He's going to play.
07:02And, Wiggy, to answer your question, with surgery, there's a – and look it up.
07:08As they say, put it in the gooks.
07:10It's 5% to 8% chance of re-tearing it with surgery, and it's about 9% to 13% chance of re-tearing it without surgery.
07:22But he's putting the work in with the best care, the best doctors.
07:26There's no way with his heart he's not going to play.
07:29He's going to be completely fine.
07:30I mean, he's a young kid.
07:32Now, hey, I'm not 6'10", either.
07:34You know, his Achilles is probably as long as my inseam.
07:37But he's going to be fine, fellas.
07:40Ed, how's your crossover?
07:41Oh, I'm so – I'm not even a weekend hero anymore.
07:45I mean, it's terrible.
07:46But I tell you, he's got to play.
07:48I know he's got to play.
07:49I can run.
07:50I can jump.
07:51And he's going to be fantastic.
07:53Ed, how did you –
07:54I can't even wait.
07:54How did you do it?
07:55So, all right.
07:59So, I was – I did a split on a dance floor.
08:06And then the next day – and then the next day, I'm like, oh, man, maybe I just pulled my cap.
08:13So, I went for a run, and I freaking tripped and jacked up my Achilles.
08:19So, I came home that night from a national sales meeting, and my wife's like, you've got to go to the house.
08:24I'm like, no, man, it's good.
08:25I'm good.
08:25I'm good.
08:26And it wasn't good, fellas.
08:29It wasn't good.
08:30I mean, there's – there has to be an age limit at which point you stay off the dance floor.
08:36What number cocktail led you to the –
08:37I don't know.
08:37Ed seems like a legend.
08:39I kind of –
08:40But when you go into the split, that's like next level dance world move.
08:44That's like James Brown world.
08:46Do we remember the Nard Dog did that?
08:48Yeah, I was watching Wiggy do his breakdance, you know.
08:51I mean, Wiggy inspired me with his breakdance in the end zone.
08:53So, I don't know.
08:56I should hang up those things.
08:58But my daughter's getting married in a week, and I think the split's expected.
09:01So, you know, if Hayden can come back, I don't know.
09:04We'll see.
09:05Yeah.
09:06All right, fellas.
09:07All right.
09:08Never get into the split.
09:09Ed's going to be like Andy Bernard with the ice on the scrotum at Jimmy Hayden's wedding.
09:13Yeah, we'll be it.
09:14But we have our own in-house person that's dealing with it, right?
09:18Isn't baseball brick?
09:19Yes.
09:20And he had got –
09:22Oh, but he has –
09:23He's –
09:24I think I saw him this weekend.
09:26I think he's out of the booth.
09:27Oh, that's good.
09:28He was after Tatum, so it'll be hard.
09:30All right.
09:30Well, I mean, that guy said he can still do everything.
09:33So, if the doctors are saying it's –
09:35You know, the percentage of re-injuring is very low, then –
09:38Yeah.
09:38I've got no issues with what I'm playing, then.
09:40This is Doug from Southie.
09:42Hello, Doug.
09:44What's going on, guys?
09:45Good morning.
09:45What's up?
09:46Courtney, I just want to say congratulations.
09:48That's awesome.
09:49Oh, thank you.
09:50There's nothing better in the world for you guys.
09:52I'm so happy for you guys.
09:54On the Patriots, Wiggy, real quick.
09:56How long do you think that, like, it's going to take Vrabel to kind of turn this, you know, DNA around?
10:03I mean, there is nobody on this roster anymore, I mean, that I can think of at least, that was part of the success of Brady and Belichick.
10:10Like, they don't have that winning DNA in their system right now.
10:15Are we too hard on Vrabel early on?
10:18Like, it's going to take some serious time to kind of turn this thing around.
10:21I'll hang up and listen, guys.
10:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:23But I thought the DNA was, it's not about Belichick, Brady DNA no more.
10:28It's now about Vrabel's guys that he brought in.
10:32Okay, but you have to give him, the place was in disarray.
10:35Like, I mean, you have to give him a little bit of time here.
10:39Yeah, but we didn't give Gerard any time.
10:41I understand that, but Gerard Mayo had never done, like, going back and saying we didn't give Gerard Mayo this or that, that doesn't matter.
10:47Right, but these are Vrabel's guys.
10:50Well, some of them are.
10:51There's a good portion of them.
10:53The old.
10:54Blaine, Moses, you know.
10:58Basically, when you look at the whole offensive line is all Vrabel's guys other than Awenu, right?
11:05Now, you start to look at that situation.
11:09Steph Diggs, the wide receiver room, you bring him in, you bring in Mack Hollins.
11:13Those are the veterans in that locker room, in that offensive meeting room that are bringing in the.
11:19Travion Henderson, Kyle Williams, you grab.
11:21Yeah, but those guys are young, so I won't even put it on them, but the vets that you brought in to make it Vrabel's culture, defensively, we know it's all over the place.
11:31So, the whole, well, they still got that losing DNA.
11:37Yeah, there are still some guys that were on the team.
11:39Is it his culture offensively, or did they force an offensive coordinator on him that he didn't want?
11:45Now, that's, that is a question for the ages.
11:51That is the million dollar question, because I know where Shyam stands.
11:56Yes, you do.
11:57I don't know.
11:58I don't really know, but Vrabel will tell us everything he's done is what he wanted to do.
12:07And the way he talks about Josh is glowingly.
12:10Right.
12:10Anytime you, it is.
12:12I wouldn't say that.
12:13I mean, okay, Shyam once brought up, like, trying to make it about Josh when it, anytime you bring up Drake with Mike Vrabel, he talks about Josh.
12:21But I would ask.
12:21Well, I mean, after week one, we were talking about an imbalance when it came to your plays offense-wise, and he was like, yeah, I think that essentially, yeah, I think we should, there should be more balance there.
12:35Yeah, that was after week one.
12:36I think the last two weeks, he's been very, very positive.
12:40But see, I would see.
12:41We'll need a more consistent, fine-tuned run plan that we believe in and worrying about some things.
12:47See, the thing I would add.
12:49We're going to put a run plan in which the running back doesn't fumble the football.
12:52That's what we're working on.
12:53I think the question, Greg, and if you were to ask me before the season, do you think Josh McDaniels is the offensive coordinator for Vrabel's team?
13:04I would have told you no, because there's no connection there.
13:07So the fact that he did become the offensive coordinator, I don't really know where that connection came from.
13:14Well, it came from, I think Curtis will tell you, because he's cheap.
13:20Josh?
13:21Yeah.
13:21Yeah.
13:21He's being paid by the Raiders.
13:23Tom Brady's paying his salary.
13:24Yeah, but you could have paid, for example, Todd Downing, who's the wide receiver coach, who was the offensive coordinator for Vrabel in Tennessee.
13:33He wouldn't have cost you a lot of money.
13:35Same with Thomas Brown, the passing game coordinator.
13:37Right.
13:37So those guys wouldn't have cost you a lot of money.
13:39So when you look at that situation...
13:42But I think that the reason, sorry, Wiggs, I think the reason that we have Josh McDaniels here is because Robert Kraft saw what happened with autonomous control and Bill Belichick.
13:51So it's important for Kraft to have some people that are not directly tied to Vrabel in positions of power inside the organization, so that it's not, quote, siloed.
14:01And I think that at the end of the year, Vrabel has a couple fall people, but McDaniels would be the number one fall guy to fire.
14:09Because maybe, I don't know when the Raiders contract expires, so maybe next year he's going to actually cost four to five million bucks and they put Downing in that spot.
14:18And then you've got Drake May with six coordinators in six years or whatever it is.
14:21So...
