Electric vehicle sales surge across EU as overall car market stalls

00:00Electric vehicles are rapidly gaining share in the EU car market, even though hybrid
00:05electric models remain the most popular category, according to the latest figures.
00:10From January to August this year, sales of electric cars grew by nearly 25 percent, while
00:15hybrid sales went up over 16 percent.
00:18In contrast, the number of newly registered petrol and diesel cars collapsed by nearly
00:2320 and 26 percent respectively.
00:26Volkswagen led the sales of new cars in the EU for the first eight months of 2025, securing
00:32over a quarter of the market share.
00:34The German car giant's sales were boosted by its Skoda and Cupra brands, while the French
00:40Renault Group also saw its sales grow.
00:43However, Toyota and Stellantis saw their sales drop, while Tesla's sales continued to plummet
00:49by more than 42 percent, cutting its market share to just 1.2 percent.
00:55Meanwhile, Chinese competitors are conquering the European market, with BYD sales surging
01:00by 244 percent, and Saik Motors boosting sales by over 33 percent.
