00:51Papadoc's madness now goes to new and truly extreme levels.
00:59Addressing the nation, he delivers a bombshell.
01:03He declares that he is more than human.
01:07He is an immaterial being.
01:11Bullets cannot hurt him.
01:14He was essentially saying that he was eternal.
01:17You were some sort of spirit hovering over Haiti.
01:29Papadoc is now stating openly what many Haitians already believe.
01:34That he is an incarnation of the dreaded voodoo loire, Baron Samadie.
01:40Guardian of the graveyard.
01:48Violence may have won him his position as president for life.
01:53But what will keep him there is voodoo.
01:57Duvalier had more power in Haiti than the arms, the weapons, the men he had around.
02:06Papadoc used voodoo to control the nation.
02:14Ever since the Yaws campaign, and dressing up as Baron Samadie,
02:20Papadoc has played on the perception that he has supernatural powers.
02:24The vision he had for himself was full control of the society through mystical power.
02:36Papadoc starts creating myths about himself.
02:41Rumors circulate that Duvalier makes a journey into the hills.
02:45He goes to a cave known as the True Foubon.
02:51It's a sacred voodoo site, where he is believed to have found something terrifyingly useful.
02:59They brought back from True Foubon a bunch of demons called Bacca.
03:04And he had them installed.
03:05They lived, I don't know what they did there, but they lived in the cellars of the National Palace.
03:09The idea that he's got these demons ready to unleash is quite a disincentive to revolt or rebellion.
03:19Papadoc needs to demonstrate to his people that he really does have voodoo powers.
03:24So he orders his men to hijack a funeral and steals the casket of his former friend and sometime political rival, Clement Jumet.
03:34Soon a story starts circulating about how he closets himself in a room with Jumel's corpse and appears to communicate with it.
03:46Papadoc is letting people think he has power to even talk to the dead.
03:53Death in Haiti for many people is not natural.
03:57So people think that Duvalier had made a zombie out of Jumel.
04:04For his voodoo rituals, Papadoc often does not need the whole body.
04:13Sometimes he demands that the decapitated heads of his enemies are brought to him.
04:19Again, bizarre rumours circulate about what he does with them.
04:24Duvalier became convinced that you could actually extract intelligence from the heads of political enemies.
04:33He would actually sit in the bath, sometimes complete with top hat, and consult the head of this opponent.
04:43The purpose of these rituals is to scare his uneducated and superstitious nation.
04:51Is Duvalier so mad that he actually believes in them too?
04:55Some who knew him, say he does not, but what is beyond doubt, is that he knows how to use voodoo.
05:05Duvalier used to smile because he was an atheist, he didn't believe in voodoo.
05:10He didn't believe in anything, just power.
05:13To have peace and stability, you should have a strong man in every country.
05:21We'll see you next time.
05:34We'll see you next time.
