00:08He won the election by a significant margin, securing 57% of the votes,

00:13while the current president, Lazarus Chakwera, received 33% and considered defeat earlier that day.

00:19This announcement marks a major political comeback for the 85-year-old Mudharika,

00:24who previously served as president from 2014 to 2020 before losing to Chakwera by a wide margin.

00:31Mudharika now inherits an economy in deep crisis,

00:35facing a severe shortage of fuel and foreign currency in this impoverished Southern African nation,

00:41before conceding Chakwera's party raised concerns about serious anomalies during the vote counting process.

00:47However, the chairperson of the electoral commission, Justice Annabelle Mtalimanja,

00:51expressed gratitude to everyone for ensuring that the elections occurred smoothly and without any significant logistical issues.

00:59The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place seven days after the announcement of the results,

01:05according to the electoral commission.

01:07Malawians also voted for the make-up of parliament and more than 500 local government representatives.
