00:00Grazie a tutti
01:05infatti parliamo di Cricket Diplomacy, Commonwealth Instrument for Peace
02:28ambasciatore dello Sri Lanka
02:30ma non voglio mettere in secondo piano
02:34certamente qui siamo nella sala stampa della Camera
02:37e corre l'obbligo salutare con particolare attenzione
02:45le rappresentanze diplomatiche

04:01allo sport
04:05ma anche al management di queste realtà
04:08che sono utili allo sviluppo della nostra società
04:12che contribuiscono a far crescere la nostra società
04:16ringrazio tutti i relatori
04:19poi ci sarà il ministro consigliere del Bangladesh
04:24Riyadh Hossein
04:26il consigliere dell'ambasciata britannica
04:31Edward Ashington Pickett
04:34Mary Crowe
04:36starting the St. George British School
04:41mi sembra è qui davanti
04:42Pius Dubai
04:44del UN Rome Best Agencies
04:48Prabhat Ekneligoda
04:51fondatore del Cricket Club di Roma
04:56e altri diplomatici
04:58che vorranno intervenire
05:00ecco io mi chiedo scusa se dimentico qualcuno
05:03ma poi
05:42nel Parlamento
05:43e ritengo che sia molto importante
05:47l'incontro che noi stiamo facendo
05:50perché è un incontro che mette insieme
05:54varie realtà
05:56che è quello che lo sport dovrebbe fare
05:58la realtà sportiva
05:59la realtà diplomatica
06:02soprattutto uno sport che lavora per la pace
06:05la realtà educativa
06:06e la realtà politica
06:08quindi la rappresentanza
06:10la democrazia
06:11chi è impegnato a costruire
06:13la società
06:15rappresentando le istanze
06:18dei cittadini
06:20ecco la carta internazionale
06:23dell'UNESCO
06:23afferma
06:24il principio secondo cui
06:27la pratica
06:28cito testualmente
06:29la pratica dell'educazione fisica
06:31dell'attività fisica
06:32grazie all'onorevole Girelli
06:38si siede subito qui
06:42poi appena deve
06:43all'onorevole Girelli
06:46deve andare a votare
06:49ma è molto impegnato
06:51nella commissione affari sociali
06:53e quindi
06:54la presidente della federation
06:56l'ambasciatore
06:57dello Sri Lanka
06:58sua eccellenza
06:59sua eccellenza
07:02Satia Rodrigo
07:03ecco dicevo
07:05è molto impegnato
07:06nella commissione affari sociali
07:08e lo sport
07:10ha anche un grande valore sociale
07:12per cui
07:12io adesso volevo dire qualcosa
07:15pure in più
07:15pensando di sostituirmi
07:18in maniera
07:19non sufficiente
07:21all'onorevole Girelli
07:22però siccome abbiamo
07:23l'onorevole in persona
07:24io mi taccio
07:26finendo
07:26però mi permette
07:28l'onorevole
07:28di finire a citare
07:29la frase
07:31dell'UNESCO
07:32la pratica
07:33dell'educazione fisica
07:34dell'attività fisica
07:35e dello sport
07:36è un diritto fondamentale
07:38per tutti
07:38promuovendo
07:40accesso inclusivo
07:41non discriminazione
07:43e integrità etica
07:44dei programmi sportivi
07:46e anche
07:47nel preambolo
07:48dello spirito
07:50of cricket
07:51si ricorda
07:52che il gioco
07:53deve essere praticato
07:54non solo
07:55entro le regole
07:56ma nello spirito
07:57e rispetto
07:58dei compagni
07:59degli avversari
08:00degli arbitri
08:00del risultato
08:01incoraggiando
08:02l'autocontrollo
08:03la realtà
08:04e un clima
08:05positivo
08:06di gara
08:07mi sembrano
08:08tutti
08:09aspetti
08:10che sono fondamentali
08:12oggi
08:13in questa società
08:14in questa società
08:15dove l'odio
08:16sta cercando
08:17di prevalere
08:18la divisione
08:19sta cercando
08:20prevale
08:21cerca di prevalere
08:23ma sono convinto
08:24che non lo farà
08:25perché grazie anche a voi
08:27grazie al vostro impegno
08:28la divisione
08:29sta cercando
08:30di prevalere
08:31sull'unione
08:32la distruzione
08:33sulla costruzione
08:35ecco
08:35questi sono
08:36atteggiamenti
08:37dell'essere umano
08:38positivi
08:39e negativi
08:41noi dobbiamo
08:41lavorare
08:42per far vincere
08:43l'umanità
08:44grazie a Dio
08:46abbiamo
08:46uno di quei
08:47parlamentari
08:48di cui siamo fieri
08:51perché lavora
08:52per far vincere
08:53l'umanità
08:53grazie onorevole
08:55e le chiedo
08:55di
08:56saluto
08:58anche
08:59centrando
09:00l'attenzione
09:01sull'importanza
09:01dello sport
09:02ma innanzitutto
09:04grazie
09:05del coinvolgimento
09:07doveva esserci
09:09il collega
09:10amico
09:11Fabio Porta
09:12che però
09:12è in missione
09:14in Sud America
09:16che è il suo collegio
09:17di elezione
09:17perché uno dei parlamentari
09:18è eletto all'estero
09:19però è il mio vicino
09:20di banco
09:21quindi
09:21condividiamo spesso
09:23quelli che sono
09:23gli impegni
09:24dicevi molto bene
09:27il valore dello sport
09:28sotto vari profili
09:29e non è un caso
09:31che
09:31proprio in questa
09:32legislatura
09:33lo sport
09:34è stato richiamato
09:35in Costituzione
09:36perché non c'era
09:38nella nostra Costituzione
09:40c'era un motivo storico
09:42perché non c'era
09:42perché usciti
09:43dal ventennio fascista
09:45dove lo sport
09:45era stato molto usato
09:47dal punto di vista
09:48proprio
09:48del regime
09:50quando fu approvata
09:53la Costituzione
09:54si pensò
09:55che non era il caso
09:56di introdurlo
09:57però sono cambiati i tempi
09:59è maturato
09:59un sentire diverso
10:00e anche
10:01di vedere lo sport
10:02sotto vari profili
10:03comincio da quello
10:05di cui mi occupo
10:06più direttamente
10:07che può sembrare strano
10:08quello
10:09sanitario
10:10che ha a che fare
10:10col benessere
10:11della persona
10:12perché sempre di più
10:14se noi vogliamo pensare
10:16di avere un futuro
10:17in cui stiamo meglio
10:18siamo società
10:20tutte
10:20che tendono
10:21ad invecchiare di più
10:22per fortuna
10:23perché la scienza
10:24la ricerca
10:24ci permettono
10:25di vivere più lungo
10:27se non
10:28abbiamo degli stili
10:30di vita adeguati
10:31rischiamo sì
10:32di invecchiare
10:32ma non nel modo migliore
10:34e quindi
10:35l'attività sportiva
10:36il fare appunto
10:38sport
10:38è un fatto essenziale
10:40da questo punto di vista
10:42però non basta
10:44perché è chiaro
10:45che siamo un po'
10:46in un modello
10:47di società
10:47dove guardiamo
10:49molto l'esteriorità
10:50e poco l'interiorità
10:51dove il bello
10:53ci pare quello
10:54che ci appare
10:55quindi l'essere in forma
10:56dimenticando
10:57che dobbiamo essere in forma
10:58anche dal punto di vista
10:59valoriale
11:00e lo sport
11:01se ben praticato
11:02se ben insegnato
11:04se ben portato
11:05ad esempio
11:06è una sintesi
11:08di quello che è la vita
11:09perché in fondo
11:10ci abitua
11:11ad affrontare
11:12dei sacrifici
11:13perché fare sport
11:15significa allenarsi
11:16significa rispettare
11:18alcune tabelle
11:18ci abitua
11:20a gioire
11:22ma senza
11:23esagerare
11:24delle vittorie
11:25quando si ottengono
11:26dei risultati
11:27ci abitua
11:29a convivere
11:30con alcune
11:31sconfitte
11:32che non sono mai
11:33motivo di
11:34depressione
11:35di
11:35dichiarazione
11:37di fallimento
11:38sono semplicemente
11:39dei passi
11:40che accompagnano
11:41la vita di ciascuno
11:42nello sport
11:43poi è abbastanza normale
11:45che si vince
11:46e si perde
11:47infatti alcune eccezioni
11:49ecco si rischia
11:50di
11:50ecco di
11:51di doversi convivere
11:53quasi quotidianamente
11:54ma oltretutto
11:56persino
11:56nei giochi
11:57individuali
11:58negli sport
11:58individuali
11:59non è mai
12:00un fatto solitario
12:01perché
12:03nel gioco
12:03di squadra
12:04il fare le cose
12:05assieme
12:05è indispensabile
12:07negli sport
12:10individuali
12:11c'è tutto
12:11un percorso
12:12di allenamento
12:12di preparazione
12:13di educazione
12:15di condivisione
12:16che comunque
12:17dà questo senso
12:18di appartenenza
12:19però se dobbiamo
12:21aggiungere
12:22anche un'ulteriore
12:23riflessione
12:24e nello specifico
12:25quando si parla
12:26per esempio
12:26di cricket
12:27si può parlare
12:28di uno sport
12:29che per la cultura
12:31la società italiana
12:32non è
12:32molto
12:34nelle abitudini
12:35lo sport
12:37è anche momento
12:37di condivisione
12:39di conoscenza
12:40di culture diverse
12:42e crea
12:44quella appartenenza
12:45quel fare comunità
12:46quella curiosità
12:47che si è investita
12:49soprattutto
12:49sui più giovani
12:50davvero diventa
12:52dei momenti
12:52di grandissima
12:53unità
12:55di condivisione
12:57non mi piace
12:58il termine
12:58integrazione
12:59perché lo trovo
13:00un po' rispettoso
13:01preferisco sempre
13:02quello di interazione
13:04dove semplicemente
13:06mantenendo le proprie identità
13:07si fanno le cose assieme
13:08io credo che lo sport
13:10sia un esempio
13:11molto
13:11molto importante
13:13ed educativo
13:13da questo punto di vista
13:15detto
13:16in estrema sintesi
13:17ci può davvero
13:18aiutare
13:19educare
13:19a costruire
13:20il bello
13:21non solo esteriore
13:22perché ci manteniamo
13:23in forma
13:24ma soprattutto
13:25interiore
13:26perché viviamo bene
13:27le vittorie
13:28viviamo bene
13:29le sconfitte
13:30ma soprattutto
13:31capiamo il valore
13:33della collaborazione
13:34e dell'unità
13:35fra le persone
13:36perché
13:36quando si suda
13:38quando si fatica
13:39quando si gioisce
13:39quando si delusi
13:41e lo si fa
13:42tutti insieme
13:42ci accorgiamo
13:43come davvero
13:44siamo tutti uguali
13:46grazie onorevole
13:52grazie grazie infinite
13:58per questa condivisione
14:01perché
14:01abbiamo veramente
14:03percepito
14:04lo spirito
14:08lo spirito
14:09con il quale
14:10ci hai
14:11partecipato
14:13a questa tua
14:14riflessione
14:15e quindi
14:17diciamo che
14:19condividendo
14:20continuiamo
14:21ognuno
14:23nella propria
14:24sede
14:24quindi ti auguriamo
14:26un buon lavoro
14:26in aula
14:27noi
14:28continuiamo
14:29un altro po'
14:30questa riflessione
14:31nello spirito
14:33del fare
14:34comunità
14:35che è anche
14:36un po'
14:36lo spirito
14:37del Commonwealth
14:38costruire comunità
14:39nelle differenze
14:41per trovare
14:42qualcosa che
14:43da condividere
14:45e dei valori
14:46sui quali
14:46fare
14:48costruire
14:51insieme
14:52il bene comune
14:53buon lavoro
15:01l'onorevole
15:02Girelli
15:02grazie
15:03e un applauso
15:05anche
15:05ecco
15:11quello che diceva
15:12l'onorevole
15:13si ricollega
15:13benissimo
15:14alle risoluzioni
15:16dell'Assemblea
15:16Generale
15:17delle Nazioni
15:18Unite
15:18in materia
15:19di sport
15:20perché
15:20le risoluzioni
15:25dell'ONU
15:26sottolineano
15:28l'importanza
15:28dello sport
15:29come educazione
15:30l'abbiamo già detto
15:32salute
15:32l'ha sottolineato
15:33l'onorevole
15:34inclusione sociale
15:35inclusione
15:37della disabilità
15:39coesione sociale
15:42e soprattutto
15:45come dicevo
15:45all'inizio
15:46educazione
15:47per la prevenzione
15:49dei conflitti
15:50e costruzione
15:51della pace
15:52ecco
15:53noi abbiamo
15:54la fortuna
15:55oggi
15:55di avere
15:55anche una
15:56comunità
15:56diplomatica
15:57qui
15:57e di avere
15:58un ambasciatore
15:59qui al tavolo

38:24Paul Garwood, Australian Embassy, but a Brit, I would add.
38:29We were playing in the 1960s inside Villaguer-Bomperi.
38:33It was a private park at that time.
38:35We were playing with the embassies, Australian Embassy,
38:38British Embassy, PAO, Commonwealth War Groups, Commission and the Colleges.
38:42I am supporting Pakistan, but in the ground, in the match, I am totally easier.
38:48I think India is a good team, but unfortunately,
38:52they lost the first match.
38:54It's a good experience.
38:56It's an international experience because we've had the opportunity to meet
38:59people from different countries, Commonwealth member countries,
39:02and also to taste Commonwealth country food.
39:06Yes.
39:06And also to create a friendship.
39:08No, look, it's a great day.
39:10We've got, soon the food will be up and Australia will showcase our lamingtons
39:15and then we'll all flock around the Indian and the Bhagavad Ganeshi tables
39:18with the buddhiyani, so that's my favourite.
39:20So, you know, it's just a good day and out in the sun having fun with friends.
39:26Indeed wonderful because, you know, Italy is a footballing country,
39:29but playing cricket here in Italy is wonderful simply.
39:33A lot of our family members are here and they're having a lot of fun.
39:36Absolutely, yes.
39:38Certainly in the Anglo-Saxon world, it's a great unifier.
39:42And I think here in Italy, it's also had quite a positive impact
39:44in helping young migrants find something to do in sport that they can feel at home with.
39:50Like you can see, there is also the moment of the daily life.
39:55As you can see, there is also the moment of the daily life.
39:59As you can see, there is also the moment of the daily life.

44:54On behalf of the British Embassy and of the Ambassador, who sadly couldn't be here today.
45:00I mean, first thing to mention is, you know, cricket is an ancient sport.
45:04We believe the first game of cricket was played in around 1550 in a field in Surrey.
45:11So it's a sport with a rich, rich history.
45:14Yes, it was probably started by the British, but it was the Commonwealth countries that made it the sport it is today.
45:20Certainly when you look at the different international formats, the T20, the one-day games, us British are not the best at cricket anymore.
45:29I look at Sri Lanka, I look at India, Bangladesh, Australia, South Africa.
45:35These are the true great cricketing nations.
45:37And thank you, Ed, for putting this together here in Italy, because Italy is perhaps becoming one of the next great cricketing nations.
45:45You never know.
45:46And it starts with playing cricket internationally and playing test cricket and playing in the big international tournaments.
45:53So Italy should be really very proud.
45:57And we're incredibly grateful to the Commonwealth Cricket Club for putting this all together.
46:04We're looking forward to playing on Saturday, playing in inverted commas.
46:09We've got some amateurs in our team and some experienced crickets in our team.
46:14The Bangladeshi team looked more like semi-professionals last year, so we should all be worried for them.
46:20But we look forward to the game.
46:22And as everyone has rightly said here, cricket is a rare game.
46:27And, you know, all sport teaches incredibly important values to do with camaraderie and teamwork.
46:32But cricket has something quite different.
46:36And hopefully some of you who haven't experienced it here in Italy will witness it on Saturday and in the future when you attend Italian cricket games.
46:45Thank you very much.
46:50Thank you, Edward.
46:51Can I call Mary-Claire Startan from St. George's School?
46:59This is our new entrant.
47:05Senor Latanzio, Mr. Muirah, Ms. Haspaz, distinguished guests, Your Excellency, good evening.
47:12It's a real honour to be here today.
47:15St. George's School feels truly privileged that we have been invited to be part of this wonderful event.
47:20And with over 100 nationalities amongst our student body and five nationalities represented in our cricket team for Saturday,
47:29we hope that our school, in its own way, embodies the spirit of diversity, community, and hope we find reflected across the Commonwealth and in the game of cricket.
47:39The Commonwealth is a vibrant family of nations.
47:42And the Commonwealth Club here in Italy serves as a wonderful example of these values in action, fostering connection and understanding here in Italy.
47:52The game of cricket is one founded on principles of dedication, fair play, perseverance, collaboration, qualities which are the bedrock of positive international relationships, even in adversity,
48:05and which align closely with the St. George's values of internationalism, excellence, and inclusivity.
48:12The Commonwealth is, by its very nature, a testament to internationalism.
48:17It transcends geographical boundaries, bringing together countries from across the continents.
48:22And this mirrors our school's commitment to preparing students to be in global citizens who appreciate and respect different cultures and perspectives,
48:31and to develop global compassion through the connections they forged through charity work with the JNRC Refugee Centre here in Rome,
48:41and our sponsorship of a school in Serenje, Zambia.
48:44This internationalism is also embodied in the wonderful connections forged through the game of cricket,
48:51where competition on the pitch is a vehicle for bonds of sportsmanship and unity to be formed across nations.
48:58Demonstrated in the UN Cricket for Good initiative, the MCC's Beyond the Boundary programme,
49:04and the Peace for Crease tournament, which saw a Vatican XI play a multi-fail Commonwealth team in 2018.
49:10At St. George's, we always strive for excellence, an aspiration the Commonwealth embodies in all fields,
49:18from education to sport to governance.
49:21The Commonwealth Club here in Italy upholds this by fostering a community of driven, successful individuals
49:27who share their knowledge and expertise, and this dedication to excellence is a core part of our school's values.
49:35Finally, inclusivity.
49:36The Commonwealth is built on the idea that everyone has a voice.
49:40And that diversity is a source of strength.
49:43It's an inclusive community where all members, regardless of size or economic power, are treated as equals.
49:50The Commonwealth Club reflects this by being an open, welcoming place for all,
49:54organising events, charity initiatives, and cultural celebrations.
49:58This, too, is a value we hold dear at our school.
50:01We're committed to creating an inclusive environment where every student feels a sense of belonging,
50:07where unique talents are celebrated, and where differences are embraced.
50:11A context much like the game of cricket, where the individual skill of the bowler, the batter, the wicket-keeper can shine,
50:18but a team wins through collective effort.
50:21In celebrating the Commonwealth Club's work, supporting this weekend's cricket tournament,
50:27we're celebrating our shared values.
50:29They remind us we're part of something much bigger than ourselves,
50:32a school, a part of Roman and Italian culture,
50:35and a global community, striving for a better, more interconnected world.
50:40So we're hugely privileged to be part of this weekend's event and this very special community.
50:44Thank you.
50:48Thank you, Mary-Claire.
50:50What a wonderful new entrant to our competition.
50:53It just represents the Commonwealth, this school, I see.
50:58So we're very welcome, you're very welcome amongst us.
51:03Can I now call from the representing the UN team, Piyush Dubey.
51:10I'm going quickly because we have a limitation on time,
51:15and I'm just worried that to get everybody in, I've left my speech out.
51:23Good evening, distinguished guests, colleagues, ambassadors, team captains, and friends.
51:28It is an honour to be here today at this important gathering,
51:31where cricket is being celebrated, not as a sport, but as a bridge between nations,
51:37and an instrument for peace and collaboration.
51:39I would like to briefly share the story of our team,
51:42the UN Rome-based agency's cricket team,
51:46sometimes also known as FAO RB11.
51:50FAO had a cricket team a long time ago.
51:54It was founded by our own Alfonso.
51:58That tradition eventually went quiet,
52:00but in 2019 it was revived by Ahmed Raza,
52:03a colleague from FAO's food and nutrition division,
52:06with a simple post on FAO intranet.
52:09He sparked new life into the idea,
52:11and colleagues from all three UN Rome-based agencies,
52:14FAO, IFPAD, and WFP,
52:16came together to form what is now the UNRBA 11.
52:20In the beginning, we were a group of misfits,
52:24many of us picking up a bat or a ball in 10 or even 15 years.
52:29We were better trained for long meetings than long innings.
52:35But the passion never left us.
52:38What started as an informal gathering quickly grew into a true team
52:42with colleagues from every background and nationality,
52:45united by cricket.
52:46Our goals are simple, but meaningful.
52:49To bring colleagues from FAO, IFPAD, and WFP together,
52:54beyond offices and division,
52:56through the joy of sport.
52:58To foster well-being, camaraderie,
53:01and diversity within the UN community,
53:03and importantly,
53:04to connect with local and international cricket communities in Italy,
53:07showing that cricket can also play its role
53:09in building bridges and friendship across cultures.
53:12We usually play our matches in Rome and around Rome,
53:16with the regular season running from September to November,
53:18and again from March to May.
53:20Every game is a reminder that while we represent different organizations,
53:24one focused on defeating hunger,
53:26another on empowering rural communities,
53:28and another on delivering emergency food and nutrition,
53:31on the field, those three mandates become one.
53:34One team, one jersey, one spirit.
53:37That mission is ultimately aligned with the mandate
53:39of the three UN-based, Rome-based agencies
53:43to fight hunger, malnutrition, and poverty,
53:46and to promote dignity and the resilience worldwide.
53:49The UNRB11 reflects those values in a very human way.
53:53We may not solve global hunger with a cover drive or a yorker,
53:57but through cricket, we strength bond,
53:59foster understanding, and celebrate the diversity
54:01that makes our organization so special.
54:04That is why we are so proud to be here today.
54:06The Commonwealth Club is not just a tournament.
54:09It is a proof that sport can connect people across culture,
54:13professions, and nations.
54:14Cricket teaches patience, discipline, and respects values
54:17that are at the heart of diplomacy and cooperation.
54:20On behalf of my team,
54:22I would like to thank the organizers of today's event,
54:24the Commonwealth Club of Rome,
54:26the Italian Cricket Federation,
54:28and our host here at Chambers of Deputies
54:30for recognizing the role of sport in diplomacy.
54:34We are proud to be a part of this celebration.
54:35We look forward to competing with passion,
54:38but also to building friendship
54:40that lasts well beyond the boundaries of the cricket field.
54:43As we often remind ourselves,
54:45the score may fade from memory,
54:47but the spirit of the game,
54:48the fairness, the unity, the respect,
54:51will remain.
54:52Thank you so much.
54:53Thank you.
54:53Thank you very much, Piyush,
54:57and to the UN team for its participation.
