Tory leader wants ‘Nation of Sanctuary’ scrapped

00:00It's time for First Minister's Questions, and this week it gets a little heated when the big issue at play is immigration.

00:07Tory leader Darren Miller is accusing the First Minister of wasting Welsh public funds on overseas projects,

00:13and thinks more money should be spent here in Wales.

00:15First Minister, why does your Welsh Labour government continue to waste taxpayers' money on issues for which it has absolutely no responsibility?

00:24You're spending millions on mini embassies in exotic locations around the world, solar-powered boats for the Wampi tribe in Peru,

00:33gender-equal tree planting in Uganda, whatever that means.

00:38How on earth can you bleat on about being underfunded from Westminster and not getting enough funding from Westminster

00:45when you're wasting millions overseas that could and should be spent on people in Wales?

00:51Under the years of austerity, under the Tories, we faced a situation where we had to make up for the lack of funding,

00:59the lack of action coming from the UK government for areas for which they had responsibility.

01:04Reformers have caused a big talking point in politics at the moment,

01:07and their hardline stance on immigration has caused division between supporters and opponents,

01:12and has caused division in the Senate.

01:14Tory leader Darren Miller says that the Welsh Government's Nation of Sanctuary plans should be scrapped,

01:20saying it's wasting money that should be spent on Welsh citizens.

01:23We don't have enough homes, we don't have enough hospitals, and we do not have enough school places

01:28for a population that increases by more than the size of Swansea, Newport and Wrexham combined every single year.

01:36And let's be clear, money spent on benefits, money spent on housing, and money spent on healthcare,

01:43including for illegal immigrants, is money that we cannot spend on Welsh citizens.

01:48Now the Welsh Conservatives are absolutely clear, the Nation of Sanctuary plans should be scrapped,

01:54and it should be scrapped immediately.

01:56So will you now scrap this wasteful policy on a matter which you do not have to spend money on,

02:02and instead put the people of Wales and our public services first?

02:06Listen, this dog whistle politics and trying to compete with reform is not going to get you anywhere Darren,

02:11and you know it. You know it. And let me tell you, you were in the front line of people

02:17telling us we had to hold out our hands and help the people of Ukraine.

02:23You were the first person there. That's where the Nation of Sanctuary money is going.

02:27You supported that Darren. You cannot change your mind because we've got an election coming up,

02:34and you find reform breathing down your neck. You don't really believe this stuff Darren.

02:39You don't really believe this stuff. The important thing for us to understand is that dividing our communities

02:46is not going to help any of us. The temperature, the political temperature in this country is high enough already.

02:54It doesn't need you to add fire to the flames.
