00:19adventure on the first slopes of one of the longest mountain ranges in Asia, for more than
00:252,000 kilometers that way, the Altai Mountains. Welcome to Kazakhstan. Welcome to Modern Nomads.
00:36Squeezed between China and Russia lies Katon Karagai, the easternmost part of Kazakhstan,
00:41a place of romantic pastures, dense forests and imposing mountain peaks covered with glistening
00:47ice. Those glaciers melt to create a whole web of pristine, even drinkable creeks and rivulets.
00:54There are many waterfalls and several crystal clear mountain lakes. Imagine this water is
00:59going to travel for 5,000 kilometers to the north before it flows into the North Sea in
01:04the Arctic Circle. 68% of the Katon territory is a national park, a wildlife reserve that
01:10is home to many species, including moose, snow leopard, brown bear, lynx and the red Altai
01:17area. Katon is one of the few remaining places where nature is undisturbed by the tourists in pursuit of the
01:32nature undisturbed by the tourists. People come here to find peace, but it takes determination to come. The
01:38closest airport in the city of Oskaman is six-hour drive away, much further than Mongolia. Still,
01:45people of Katon try to make the best of it.
01:47We came to the conclusion that the sustainable development of Katon Karagai's region will be

03:38airplanes with tourists should land early next year. Bulldozers are already widening the dirt roads
03:44to make way for the asphalt. Even the people benefiting from the tourism in the region
03:48are hopeful, yet anxious at the same time, afraid of the mass tourism visitor numbers.
03:54We want to keep the Katon in the way it is today, so that there is no
04:03typical development of tourism, a large number of visitors. Everything should be in favor.
04:09Everything should be very complicated, and in the first of all, safe for nature and for the local community.
04:18The new international airport nearby should be open sometime next year. So I hope
04:24the next visit will be by plane. But this piece of paradise is definitely worth seeing again.
