Take a look at our exclusive chat with the lead stars of the hit musical The Bodyguard coming to Blackpool next week.
Transcript
00:00Obviously I'm talking to you both because you're coming to Blackpool with The Bodyguard,
00:10so can I ask how you feel about taking it there?
00:13I think the most exciting thing about Blackpool for me, this is my first time really getting
00:19to the UK properly, because in the past you know you pop over for a weekend and maybe
00:24see a show in London and you go home and you're kind of in a whirlwind, I'm finally going
00:28to really get to get to know cities and I'm super, super excited because it's our first
00:33move.
00:34You know, we came to Birmingham to start, but this is our first time picking up the show
00:37and moving it to a new place.
00:38Yeah, look, I went to Blackpool for the first time last Christmas for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,
00:47so this is my second time, but this time it'll be, you know, hopefully warmer, even though
00:54the weather was actually really nice when I was up there.
00:58And yes, it's really, it's lovely.
01:00The Winter Gardens is a magnificent building for a start.
01:06The crowds were always really great in Blackpool, like we had an amazing experience there.
01:10There's a really nice cafe right on the water I can take you to.
01:13It's got a really good breakfast.
01:16Yeah.
01:17It's a really big city as well.
01:18Like it's, you can go up the Blackpool Tower and you'll see just how big it is.
01:22So it's one of those, it's a famous city in the UK and, you know, it was like the seaside
01:30town of the Victorians.
01:34So, yeah, there's the famous Blackpool Tower and there's a ballroom underneath it where
01:40people still go in the daytime and dance with each other and, yeah, and it was a home.
01:45It's like, it's a really historic place.
01:47So, you know, I found it really fascinating and I really am into that sort of stuff,
01:51like history and stuff like that.
01:52So, you know, it's like going back to Blackpool.
01:55So what can the people of Blackpool expect from the bodyguard?
01:58Oh, well, the thing about the bodyguard is that it's kind of got a little bit of something
02:07for everybody.
02:08It is thrilling.
02:09I mean, I would describe it as a musical thriller, but it's high energy, incredible dancing.
02:16It's highly romantic.
02:18It's just everything for everyone.
02:21It's not a strange musical, but it is because it's not traditional in any sense.
02:27It's not a jukebox musical.
02:29It's not, uh, it is romantic, but it's also a thriller and a mystery.
02:34It's quite, got quite a lot of danger.
02:36Um, it's, it's relatively adult in its sensibilities.
02:41Um, and it's got phenomenal music and, uh, Sidani failed to mention as well as the amazing
02:49dancers.
02:49It's got ridiculous singing of which I, I do none of.
02:55I do sing.
02:57It's not in the same league.
02:59Somewhat deliberately.
03:01Um, definitely deliberately.
03:05Well, I don't know.
03:05I've, I've seemed to have found a talent.
03:08I think I've really hit my mark with tuneless singing.
03:12And, uh, I'm going to go with it.
03:15I'm going to go, I'm going to become the new Rex Harrison.
03:16I'm just going to speak everything.
03:19Well, like to the music, it's just phenomenally written.
03:24It's just good music.
03:25It's stood the test of time and to revisit it in the context of the piece.
03:30It's just so nice because, you know, there's still radio hits all these years later, but
03:33they apply so well to the scenic work that it's almost unbelievable.
03:39Um, it feels like every night I'll hit another lyric that I think, oh, I didn't,
03:43I actually didn't feel the depth of hell.
03:44This really, really rings true and where we are in the story.
03:47And so that's something really wonderful to experience.
03:49If you already know the songs, to listen to the songs and the texts anew and just see how
03:55alive they are in the situations.
03:57If people in Blackpool haven't bought tickets yet to see The Bodyguard, why should they?
04:02I don't like to make promises, but I'm going to do it anyway.
04:05It's going to be an unforgettable evening.
04:08Truly is.
04:09And we're only there for four or five days.
04:11So just get there, just get there.
04:13It's hard to describe it.
04:16You just have to experience it.
04:17It's an amazing evening.
04:20Yeah.
04:20I mean, I think, I think it's only five shows.
04:22So it's like doing a, like a concert stint in a, in a city.
04:27And I mean, the, you'll see it when you, obviously when we get there, but the Winter Gardens is,
04:33it's big.
04:35It's a really big place.
04:37It takes a lot, you know, and if it's, if it's full, that place will, you know, this music will
04:42fill that place in itself.
04:43You know, it's, it's a really spectacular show.
04:47Um, so yeah, I think, I think audience will love it.
04:56Bye-bye.
04:57Bye-bye.
05:01Bye-bye.
05:06Bye.
05:11Bye-bye.
05:20Bye.
