Avec Orson Welles (monsieur Clay), Jeanne Moreau (Virginie Ducrot), Roger Coggio (Levinsky), Norman Eshley (Paul), Fernando Rey (le marchand).

Synopsis :
Macao, dans les années 1860. Depuis qu'il a causé la ruine de son associé pour une somme dérisoire, monsieur Clay, un puissant marchand, vit reclus dans la maison qu'il a volée au défunt. Un jour que Levinsky, son comptable, lui fait comme à l'accoutumée la lecture, monsieur Clay lui raconte l'histoire de ce marin qu'un vieillard richissime embaucha pour féconder sa femme. Levinsky lui assure que ce n'est là qu'une légende destinée à la fertile imagination des matelots. Piqué au vif, monsieur Clay entend démontrer une dernière fois sa capacité à dominer le monde en rendant possible cette histoire faramineuse. Levinsky est chargé de recruter épouse et matelot....
