00:00okay good morning my name is phil hewitt group arts editor at sussex newspapers well it's not
00:06every day you get to speak to sherlock holmes in this instance mark knightley and you are
00:11sherlock holmes in sherlock holmes the hunt for moriarty massive tour ahead you're playing
00:17devonshire park theatre in eastbourne in october november it's the von ernie in guildford
00:23mass studios in southampton in january next february it's the conalt theatre in worthing
00:30sherlock holmes how do you approach a character like that because there's so many expectations
00:34aren't there everyone's got their idea of sherlock holmes and how he should be how do you how do you
00:39approach yeah that's a good question um i mean i think it's i think it's important to in some ways
00:45meet those expectations um and in some ways uh subvert them um but uh and to find my own version
00:53of uh of sherlock holmes as as well um what are the key things you've got to hit to be sherlock holmes
01:00well i think i mean i think obsession uh with his with his work and with with cracking the case um that
01:07really drives him to the detriment of his health and and his relationships to a certain extent um and i
01:15think that's one thing that the audience can and i can really like hook on to he's just like laser
01:20focused and um and then coupled with that is his um just this intelligence um and and restless uh
01:30energy uh which which really stems from this obsession and and his intelligence and his need
01:35to like to meet his intelligence with things to do in cases to solve um yeah he's like he's generally
01:43the smartest smartest guy in the room and he wants people to know that as well and he's going to
01:49outwit everyone in this one which intriguingly is an original piece isn't it but it does bring together
01:54it's based on three or four of the short stories that's right yeah nick's uh woven together uh yeah
02:00i think three or three or four of them uh into one into one tapestry so you get a bit of um irene
02:08adler and uh is based on the bruce partington affair which which forms a big um backbone of
02:14the plot and uh and then moriarty obviously makes his uh it's all masterminded by him you kind of
02:21creeps into the into the fray and then and then grips hold of it um so yeah it's very exciting it's
02:28a roller coaster absolutely especially with all those dates stretching months ahead that's quite some
02:33prospect isn't it but an enjoyable one yeah uh yeah it is um yeah no it's exciting to be going to
02:41to different places and a lot around the south my i'm from uh gospel like portsmouth um and my family
02:47are still there so um uh so i like you know i love all those like venues that you've mentioned i've got
02:54very fond memories of of a lot of them um and yeah and it's just interesting seeing how the play
03:00performs in different spaces and uh and the different reactions to the audiences the different
03:05towns um so yeah it's um it's it's daunting how long the tour is but also um challenging and exciting
03:14which is which is what we want fantastic well good luck with all of it really lovely to speak to you
03:19thank you thank you thank you very much
