00:00Good afternoon from the newsroom. In the United States, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton moved
00:11another step closer to becoming their party's nominees in the race for the White House with
00:16wins in the South Carolina and Nevada elections. After yet another disappointing result, former
00:22Florida Governor Jeb Bush ended his campaign. Announcing his plans to run for president last
00:28summer, Jeb Bush was viewed by many as the Republican Party presumptive nominee. Last
00:33night, the Jeb journey ended when the former Florida Governor scored less than 8 percent.
00:38The people of Iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina have spoken and I really respect their
00:43decision. So tonight I am suspending my campaign. Yeah, yeah. Donald Trump topped the poll with
00:50almost a third of the votes. We're going to do the wall and by the way, who's going to
00:57pay for the wall. Ten points behind him, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz battled for second place.
01:05History will say that on this night in South Carolina, we took the first step forwards in
01:12the beginning of a new American century. We are the only campaign that has beaten and can
01:21beat Donald Trump. In Nevada, it was a case once again of better than expected turnout,
01:30but nevertheless, it was Hillary Clinton who left victorious in a race closer than she would
01:35have liked. I'm on my way to Texas. Bill is on his way to Colorado. The fight goes on. The future
01:41that we want is within our grasp. Bernie Sanders was unfazed by the narrow defeat. When Democrats
01:47assemble in Philadelphia in July at that convention, we are going to see the results of one of the
01:56great political upsets in the history of the United States. The Republicans will now caucus in Nevada on
02:03Tuesday and the Democrats hold a primary on Saturday in South Carolina before the multi-state power play
02:09on Super Tuesday on March 1st. Katrina Perry, RTE News. With five days until polling day, election
02:18campaigning is continuing. The Theatia Genda Kenney was at Lupehead Lighthouse to outline
02:23Furnagrail's plans to grow the tourism sector. In Dublin, Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister,
02:28Martin McGuinness, criticised Furnagrail for resorting to the politics of fear, describing
02:33Sinn Féin's policies as the politics of hope, while Fianna Fáil was launching its policy document
02:38aimed at tackling the problems of the capital, primarily housing and crime. And Fianna Fáil
02:45has called for the Theatia Genda to apologise for comments made during a rally in Castlebar,
02:49County Mayo, yesterday. Describing some locals as whingers, Mr. Kenney suggested they had refused
02:55to acknowledge that the town has experienced benefits from the growing economy.
02:59So I say to those people, and God knows we have some all-Ireland champions here in Castlebar.
03:09I don't mean Castlebar, Mitchells. I mean the whingers that I hear every week saying,
03:15there's nothing happening. Well, I want to assure them that the future is very bright.
03:20All we have to do is maintain progress in terms of our economy.
03:24At least 46 people have been killed in a double car bombing in the Syrian city of Homs.
03:31A UK-based monitoring group says most of the dead appear to be civilians. It's not yet clear who was
03:37behind the bombing. This comes as the US Secretary of State has said he and his Russian counterpart
03:42have reached a provisional agreement on the terms of a ceasefire in Syria.
03:47I believe that in the conversation that we had, we have reached a provisional agreement in principle
03:59on the terms of a cessation of hostilities that could begin in the coming days.
04:06In Michigan, in the US, a 45-year-old man is in custody in connection with a spate of shootings
04:26which left seven people dead. A 14-year-old girl was among the victims. The shootings happened at
04:32several different locations in the city of Kalamazoo. Police believe the victims were shot at random.
04:39We've had several shootings here tonight in the county, in the city of Kalamazoo. They all appear
04:45to be related. We have multiple people dead. In summary, what it looks like is we have somebody
04:51just driving around, finding people and shooting them dead in their tracks.
04:55Sports news now and Rory McIlroy is in his share of fifth place going into today's final round of the
05:02Northern Trust Open. A third round of four under par 67 has left McIlroy 10 under par overall. Only two
05:09shots off the lead. It is off at 6pm this evening Irish time. The outright lead is held by Bubba Watson
05:16on 12 under par. And that's Sunday's lunchtime news from all of us here. Bye for now.
