00:00good afternoon from the newsroom a 32 year old man has been arrested after a
00:09car was driven into crowds in the Australian city of Melbourne 19 people
00:14have been injured with several in a critical condition this is the moment
00:19Australian police arrested a man after a white SUV plowed into crowds on
00:25Flinders Street in Melbourne witnesses described seeing the car driving through
00:30a red light before careering into pedestrians at the busy Junction over a
00:36dozen pedestrians were struck by the car and several are now said to be in a
00:40critical condition a young child with serious head injuries was among those
00:46who were taken to hospital at this stage we believe is that a deliberate act can
00:50I repeat that at this stage we believe it is a deliberate act however we
00:55do not know the motivation and it is still early stages of the investigation
00:59later police said the 32 year old man they had arrested at the scene is a drug
01:05user with mental health issues but no known links to terrorism he's an
01:11Australian citizen of Afghan descent and police said he was taken into custody by
01:15an off-duty police officer after a struggle the officer sustained shoulder
01:20and hand injuries during the arrest both he and the suspect are now being treated
01:25in hospital a second man was arrested after being seen filming the incident and
01:30was found to be in possession of a bag of knives however police now say he is not
01:36believed to be linked to the incident it's the second vehicle attack to have
01:42occurred in Melbourne this year in January six people died when a man drove a car
01:47into pedestrians on Burke Street city authorities later installed concrete
01:52blocks in various locations including Flinders Street hoping to prevent this
01:58type of attack Jonah Sullivan or T news Ryanair has confirmed in writing that it
02:05now recognizes impact as the representative of the airline's pilots the
02:10union says it has accepted an invitation from management to attend a
02:13meeting on the 3rd of January impact has described it as a historic achievement
02:18and our reporter Joe McRaley joins us now from impact headquarters Joe can you
02:23take us through what happened this morning
02:27this will Mary we'll take a step back to Friday the process began on Friday when
02:31Ryanair said it would recognize unions for the first time and they have never had
02:34union recognition within the company so that was something of a bolt for them
02:38from the blue but it was very good news for unions however impact which was
02:43representing pilots but here in Dublin wanted further details about what
02:47exactly that recognition entailed now they took a step themselves in that they
02:51suspended the one-day strike action that had been planned for yesterday but they
02:56also demanded Ryanair get back to them by midday today with details on the
03:00recognition that they were offering Ryanair did that by mid-morning the
03:04impact trade union has described it as a breakthrough and we can hear now from
03:08the assistant general secretary Ashley Connolly this is a message to all workers who
03:13have been fighting and have had their you know achieving I'm walking away
03:17tirelessly in order to achieve independent workplace representation and
03:21we believe that is a significant move in itself
03:24did you ever think this day would come I'm happy to say it has come
03:31so what have they got then from Ryanair well what they've got his recognition in
03:35writing from the company that impact will now be the Union for collective
03:40bargaining purposes on behalf of Dublin based pilots with Ryanair they will go
03:45into a meeting with the company on the 3rd of January to conclude a
03:48comprehensive recognition agreement with the company and they will hope to
03:54quickly move on to deal with the issues of pay and conditions for pilots and from
04:00passenger point of view very importantly the Union says that the threat of
04:04industrial action has receded for the moment Joe MacReilly we leave it there
04:08thank you very much for joining us union leaders are warning that hundreds of
04:12jobs are under threat in Belfast this follows a decision by the US to impose
04:17duties on imports of Bombardier C series commercial jets when Bombardier sold six
04:24billion dollars worth of its new C series passenger jets to Delta Airlines its
04:30rival US planemaker Boeing claim Bombardier was selling the planes at
04:35below cost price because it had received unfair state aid from Canada and the UK
04:41US trade officials have now upheld Boeing's complaint and imposed 300%
04:47tariffs on the C series effectively trebling its price Bombardier employs
04:534,000 people in Belfast with a quarter of the staff involved in making the wings
04:58for the C series jets unions said the imposition of US trade tariffs on the
05:04planes could jeopardize hundreds of jobs in the north it's not an unexpected
05:09decision obviously we believe this to be an American first policy through the
05:13Trump administration but hopefully if the ITC look at this here and for an
05:18equitable manner then those tariffs would be overturned because there's
05:20absolutely no damage done to Boeing they never even better on the Delta
05:23process this is not the sort of news the workforce here in East Belfast wanted
05:28to hear especially in the run-up to Christmas but this is not the final
05:32ruling on the tariffs issue the case will now be considered by the
05:37International Trade Commission in the US and their adjudication is expected next
05:43February Brendan Wright RTE news at Bombardier Belfast

06:48Manchester City celebrated their first triumph over Manchester United since 1978
06:54post-match United's boss was magnanimous in defeat and I think a beautiful day for
07:00football because a team from a lower division won and get into into semi-final big day for them
07:08big day for their for their supporters so I congratulate to them I don't want the
07:14fact that I say they were a bit lucky that that is the main thing of it the
07:19main thing of it is that they won and and they fought hard for that one of

07:41comeback was hampered by injury and finally hundreds of people gathered at
