02:31Guided by their coach and professor, Mr. Jeff Salimbangon, the students created a product
02:38that combines accessibility, innovation, and empathy.
02:42The goal, to make daily mobility easier and safer for the members of the blind and the PWD community.
02:49Today, they'll be sharing how this idea came to life and how the challenges they faced during the development
02:56and how they hope this technology can create lasting impact, not just in Cebu but across the country.
03:02Welcome.
03:04There's a lot of blood.
03:06There's a lot of blood.
03:07There's a lot of blood.
03:08There's a lot of blood.
03:09What do you think?
03:10Good afternoon, I hope.
03:13and congratulations thank you so they just won the real MVP champ now they
03:20are the real MVP champion for the college division so this is a
03:26competition that's recently organized by the National Council of Disability
03:31Affairs as well as smart PLD team and I just learned that they bested even UP
03:37minus so how many schools join the competition around 100 so you one of
03:45hundreds yes you see go and then how long was the entire duration of the
03:54competition it was eight month competition eight months of having
04:03refinement submissions and upgrade of the technology so series of mentoring as
04:11well okay how many from Cebu again there are I think three schools in Cebu and so I
04:20know but you know but you can on levels like I prove its province or derecho to
04:26national derecho to national and from the national initially almost 100 entries
04:34then it was filtered from almost 100 down to 80 down to 50 25 and top 20 and then
04:44for the pitch it's only for the top top 20 so sa katong 20 na pinaka refine ka mo ang nakadaog
04:52yes ma'am for the college division so how did the idea was conceptualized now the
05:03idea or the idea of truck sense started when I asked my students under my course
05:09embedded system in our curriculum in this IT program they submitted project ideas and
05:17and then this group they proposed this smart king but at first when I see the
05:26features I told them to to go further no so to innovate or to add features or
05:34innovative features that would be an impactful for 40 blind so from there I came
05:45across a post of this smart competition or believe the smart swim and then I told
05:50them to try submit because their idea their idea is aligned or fit perfectly fits on the
06:00competitions theme so from there out of yeah 100 entries it was filtered down to top 80 series of
06:13multi or multiple or multiple competitive rounds were done mentoring online
06:18refinement submissions and then from top 80 down to top 50 they call they call it
06:26mega 50 and then from top 50 to top 25 and then eventually that's top 20 we landed
06:34also on this part of top 20 so last September 3 we flew to Manila for the final pitch
06:43and demo so we pitched and fortunately we won as the real MVP out from the top 17 schools because the three teams are for from the senior high high school divisions which is a different division of the competition
07:04and I also learned that the real MVP is one of the most anticipated awards
07:10yes yes particular competition why is that so I think they just name MVP it's because of the owner of
07:19ability smart MVP I'm interested who pitched who made the pitch see Kyle Kyle can you explain to us
07:34okay
07:36okay
07:40objective or goal in developing
07:42the smart cane and
07:44what is that
07:46smart glass
07:48what does that mean
07:49what are the changes in developing
07:50what is that what does that mean
07:51so he says
07:52100% of all the brands
07:53it's so I don't know
07:54it's so I don't know
07:55about that
07:56that's it
07:57as Google
07:57like Google Glass
07:58yeah
07:59but it's so it's not
08:01Google Glass
08:02yeah
08:03you don't know
08:05so it's not
08:06I don't know
08:07anyway
08:08Tal, can you explain to us what is the intention for you to develop?
08:13How did you come up with the idea of developing this?
08:15So, our main goal is, our number one goal is only for the visually impaired to navigate independently and also safely.
08:23And that is our top most and number one objective when creating tracksuits.
08:28Okay.
08:29Of all the sectors that compose the PWD community, what made you decide that you will focus more on the blind?
08:39Because here in Cebu, before when we were still in college, every time we go home, we noticed blind ones like massage, the way they navigate.
08:49They navigate with groups, but we try to imagine why not navigating alone but with technology.
08:57So, you're assisting them, right?
08:59Yes.
09:00Nainumdum ko.
09:01Pagkakitaan ako sa Kay, nainumdum ko yesterday.
09:03Yesterday, we celebrated the opening fellowship for the 33rd Press Freedom Week.
09:10And then, during the event, naay kanangkuan, naay kanang wellness ba.
09:15So, among the wellness, agad kayo nagpahilot.
09:17So, dagad, mga butaan.
09:19And that's, you know, that's...
09:21When you navigate sila, di magigid silang makalaka without...
09:24Yes.
09:25Yes.
09:26Assistance.
09:27Assistance.
09:28So, mura silang aunts.
09:29Diba wala ka, how the aunts ka na mag...
09:30Yeah.
09:31Linya ginasan niya.
09:32You try to disrupt.
09:33Mangitira pa na lang di an-an.
09:34But they still, mofollow din sila.
09:36So, mura wala na ganit sila'y makita.
09:41But, inaanak pa sila ka...
09:43Yeah, dependent.
09:44Able ba nga ka na, di sila makalihok on their own.
09:47Possible pagid siya nga.
09:49Mailag pagid siya sa nag-guide niya.
09:52Kanang inaanak.
09:53So, tell us more on the features of like the smart cane.
09:57Angela, can you help us?
09:59So, for the smart cane, we have the...
10:01We have sensors for obstacle detection and edge detection.
10:05So, every time there's an obstacle in front, the stick will beep.
10:11Then, if there is an edge detection, where there might be potholes or like canals,
10:20the stick will vibrate anytime that the surface level is different.
10:26Then, also, the stick has a GPS tracking where it can have the real-time location of the blind,
10:34which can be accessed through the app of the Guardian.
10:38Then, it also has an SOS button that anytime that the blind might have an emergency,
10:45they will just press this button and it will send an SOS notification to the app.
10:50So, the good thing about this one, because just like you also noticed ka na mga PWD Samoa,
10:56what they do is they use the cane and then they use their hand for them to detect whether there's an obstacle.
11:02So, but this one will do that for them.
11:05Yes, especially nga nag-invest ang Cebu City.
11:07Anang ilang gitawa ko.
11:09Oh, hindi ka, tactile ba na siya nga.
11:11Kanan, the yellow strips.
11:13Mo mo lang lagi.
11:15Try, mag, try using, lakaw ka from, sa Osmeña Boulevard.
11:19Nibung ka nga.
11:20Sidewalk man eh.
11:21Igan na.
11:22Radig i-park auto.
11:23Hindi mo sa parking.
11:24O eh.
11:25Mausad na, no?
11:26Kanan.
11:27So, at least the obstacle detector.
11:29Yes.
11:30Kaya mag-una nga man siya.
11:31Di ba?
11:32Sakto na siya.
11:33No, nilut na siya.
11:34Nag-ang din matabangan mo, anak.
11:35Very bright.
11:36Very good kids!
11:37Ah, okay, it's kapatid.
11:38Di ba?
11:39So, nilut siya.
11:40I thought, earlier, isa ka kono siya gel.
11:44Makita, ninin mo siya daw?
11:46Kono tuud mo.
11:47Na siya yung vibration.
11:48Yes.
11:49I thought, at first, this is a camera.
11:51Today, it's a sensor.
11:53Yes.
11:54This is a sensor mo.
11:55Vibrate.
11:56Kono tuud.
11:57Tell us about the red button.
11:59Ah, so the red button is for the SOS or the emergency alert.
12:03So, every time that the blind needs help, they will just press this button and it will send an alert to the, um, notify the guardians.
12:12Yeah.
12:13They are stuck somewhere, for example.
12:14Yes.
12:15How sturdy is the stick niya?
12:16Pwede sa drug self-defense yung kaso binwangan sila.
12:18Pang-pinsing.
12:20Or, di lang ako namin sinang ka ng karatan.
12:22Because, yun na?
12:23Arnis.
12:24Pwede pang arnis.
12:25Pwede pang arnis.
12:26Pwede siya pa.
12:27Delight na siya, no?
12:28Kaya bukat po siya for the blind.
12:30Because, we have to make sure that it's lightweight.
12:32Yeah, lightweight.
12:33Okay.
12:34Now, we're done with the smart cane.
12:37But, yung features again, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it, it.
12:52Diba?
12:53And then, there's an, there's a feature where there's an emergency.
12:56Ma-inform ni mo ang guardian ng.
12:58You're stuck somewhere or.
13:00Or, you need help.
13:02But, di, wala lang ni Ed, di, ang inang feature.
13:05feature, ilan na ginning gate

29:19I

29:23so I
29:24always
29:24encourage
29:26them
29:26And we have these facilities and we have to be very serious on how to learn all of these things
29:34because you see from the start, it's very supportive.
29:37So they provided us these technologies and even if it's no longer their time
29:42because the subject has like two hours, so the availability of technologies are there.
29:49They just have to borrow and then keep experimenting and keep dreaming big, no?
29:56Because as I have told them, don't be afraid to fail forward, no?
30:02So we have these ideas, we have to invest in your skills and trust the process, no?
30:12Because of course, the future belongs to those who dare to build it.
30:17So just like now, UC has invested millions, no?
30:24For TM, so across three campuses, Maine, Vanilla, and LM.
30:29So it's there and then it's available for our students.
30:33So I told them to be very serious in learning because we are not also joking on our side as mentors, I mean faculty.
30:43So this is from the College of Computer Studies.
30:46Computer Studies.
30:47So what are available programs that UC actually have for Computer Studies?
30:54In the College of Computer Studies, we now have three programs.
30:59It's the BCIT program, the old one, the BCS, and then the BCS AI.
31:07It's the new offered program for UC.
31:12I think you say, you know, you're a pioneer or you're a pioneer on AI.
31:17Yes.
31:18We have seen that there's been close to the attorney Gasko, no?
31:24So we visited his office last week. I think that was last week.
31:28And you know, the attorney Gasko's job is, I will try to provide you with the equipment.
31:34yes you just make sure you study study study hard yes no I think see attorney
31:44Glasgow is already 91 years old so at 91 he's still thinking of what's good for
31:49the students so take advantage of that once the mga datuk na mo balik town
32:13you're ang nahita po in Annie what you achieve is can be an inspiration to
32:19those who are watching us now mga estudyante pariyanin niyo nga oh
32:24pwede sa Demi maghimo sag ibinto sag kukutsara ako na ipress mo
32:28automatic na siya gumit na ako
32:29ah diba dyan paliyod to naman god
32:32sige for for for Angela and for Kyle ba what about our viewers who speaking of
32:40inspiration what about for our viewers who are still investigating whether
32:45computer studies is really for them what would be your recommendation as part of
32:52their thought process to arrive at such a decision for me I have chosen this
33:00field for DBS IT because I want to explore new things especially on
33:06technology I'm curious on how these things work and what made them work so
33:12that's why I have decided to pursue this field so I can say for the for those who
33:19want to pursue this field is if you're curious like me or if you have a curious
33:24mind it would be better to pursue on the field of technology for me since I'm really into
33:34computer at first I really wanted to know what's going behind the computer like
33:39the screen on kita but like the binaries behind it the things behind it reflect the
33:45back end so most you don't take your IT and also for the viewers like this no we
33:53thought we would be able to create this but we were able to create something that
33:57seems impossible to create since so in parts can be very common but here in the
34:02Philippines you know we're very bombarded with public corruption but you know
34:06still focus on helping others but if you want to help just help and also dream big and also
34:15always be inspired and also nothing is impossible
34:18So when you see a young person what made you think that
34:24I think innovation starts with curiosity and of course in later part you have to
34:43collaborate because from there you will learn a lot so if you want to like pursue or
34:53continue in the field of technology especially in computer related courses like
34:59computer engineering IT CS you don't have to stop from learning also every day you
35:08have to you have to like know new technologies how this technology is
35:16working or functioning behind the scene like like AI like the common one that is
35:21chat GPT and all of these things also you don't have to focus only on the on the
35:27what they call this one the different but also on how these things work behind the scene
35:33and that's what these students are learning not from from our university
35:39so kind of inspirational can you experience can and like like
35:46you were able to you were able to so they have to balance their project
35:51their OGT so one cannot shine even mga mga tao like pareha ni Kenneth
35:57or DJ challenge gapon ang time management
36:01sorry
36:03and also of course the discipline and the individual attitude because every weekend I sit meetings for them if we can meet and then talk something discuss so they are despite
36:19they are
36:21despite the their schedule na busy kay sila
36:23so they were able to
36:25to be there and then discuss this matter discuss these things
36:29because it's a long journey for the team
36:31it's eight months
36:33so you have to do a series of meetings to improve and refine the project
36:39the project
36:41you're all graduates now no?
36:43yes
36:45yes
36:47yes
36:49yes

37:19Yes
37:21yung itong mabuhat is katong mga butang na mamanage na to ang
37:25For Cebu City, it's about 20,000, but if you have 20,000, that's 20 souls or 20 lives, it's another chance to be part of the real world.
37:42And it's also inspiring that we get to see young people like them.
37:48I know the Philippines actually has a lot of problems, but the Philippines also has a lot of opportunities to advance solutions.
37:56And I'm glad that we have more young people choosing that route.
38:00I hope the government, especially the OST, will continue to support this project.
38:06Later on, some of them have been able to do it in China or in the U.S.
38:12So, they're not a Philippine brand, right?
38:15Which has happened to a lot of innovations.
38:17Like these innovations before, instead of gasolina, it's too big.
38:21Ah, where are they?
38:23So, they're not.
38:25They're not.
38:27They're not.
38:29
38:30So, I hope you give this project a chance, support them, and make this as possible,
38:34
38:35
38:36
38:37
38:38
38:39
38:40

38:55I think they were so excited that they were so excited that they were so excited that they were so excited.
39:01Without assistance or without.
39:04I can see that especially the people who want to be a massage,
39:08they didn't want to talk about it.
39:10They didn't want to talk about it.
39:12They didn't want to talk about it.
39:14They didn't want to talk about it.
39:17So with this, you can be independent.
39:20At first, very challenging but I'm sure they can adapt.
39:24Or even those living inside the village, they can already take a walk.
39:29They can already take a walk by themselves.
39:31Okay, walking lang sa town.
39:32Practice lang sa ta dito before tamo.
39:34At dahil sa Cebu City nga.
39:36It's a wild world out there.
39:38Huwag ang traffic sa kalibutan.
39:40So, muna siya.
39:41So, congratulations.
39:43Congratulations.
39:44Graduate naman mo.
39:45So, partner mo.
39:46Ano mo yung mga work?
39:47Tanan?
39:48Ay, nagenjoy pa sila sa ilang grant.
39:51No, but the grant is to develop it further.
39:55Yes, ma'am.
39:56So, asa man mo, Karol?
39:58Halak.
39:59Nangitag trabaho.
40:00Uy, attention!
40:01Naging na sila o work!
40:03So, you have good skilled mga sudyente na adini Karol.
40:07So, they develop something.
40:08Halak.
40:09Up for grabs, gini sila.
40:10You know?
40:11I think they have developed a good sense of good work ethics.
40:16So, to all our employers,
40:18timan ini lang mga ngaan.
40:19Huwag ang ilang manganaw.
40:21Kaya valuable ni sila sa inyong organization.
40:25And, ako sa, while I'm an employer,
40:28but I would also encourage them to continue investigating the entrepreneurial route.
40:35Because I think in the Philippines, that's also what we need more.
40:41Karol Manggud Murak, we're a country of employees.
40:44So, I hope in your generation, we will also becoming more and more a country of employers.
40:50So, that your difference will even multiply.
40:54Naganaghanapod ba ya itong mga patanon na mga employers?
40:56Mga start-ups, di ba?
40:58Correcto.
40:59So, I hope di lang mo mo stop being a start-up.
41:03Big tech gidmosos.
41:05Di na ko kaabotan na.
41:06Ah, di di ay, makaabot up to.
41:08Abo to.
41:09Consulta.
41:10Abo to.
41:11So, again, congratulations to all of you.
41:15And, of course, to the University of Cebu for, you know, supporting the students.
41:19Especially, si Atty. Gas.
41:21Nga, iyalagyan.
41:22Ang ako ginbain ng duman.
41:23Ako ipalit.
41:24Maningkamot siya mangita og fans for the equipment.
41:27The laboratory.
41:29Basta, pag you need to do your part.
41:31And that is to study.
41:32Study, study very hard.
41:34Mag ito i-hagi su.
41:36So, ang graduate naman din si Lisa.
41:39So, all of the students nga nasa UC.
41:41You have three campuses, right?
41:43You have UCLM, UC Banillad.

41:56So, with that, mga higala.
41:59So, we'd like to thank the University of Cebu, Maine campus team, TruckSense, from the College of Computer Studies, who emerged recently as the real MVP champion at the Smart Sweep Innovation Generation 4.
42:14And thank you for joining us today and for helping us connect so many dots in ways that matter.
42:20Okay.
42:21So, that wraps up this edition of Beyond the Headlines.
42:24We hope today's conversation helped shed light in the bigger picture behind the story.
42:29And I hope the story of these young students have inspired you that there's so much in life.
