House Hunters Season 264 Episode 10
Transcript
00:00Newlyweds Bernardo and Nia need a home for their blended family in Baltimore,
00:09but are having a bit of a culture clash.
00:11What are you going to do with chickens anyway?
00:13We'll have fresh eggs.
00:15Nia's humble beginnings in Honduras have her dreaming of a sleek and social media worthy place.
00:21I would definitely post this.
00:22The kids can take their prom pictures here.
00:25The stairs look too new.
00:27A new isn't a buzzword for Bernardo.
00:30He's old school.
00:31The more vintage and cozy, the better.
00:33This reminds me of my grandma's house.
00:35But Nia's not sold since she thinks old homes are haunted.
00:40It looks so scary.
00:41I want to get out of here.
00:58You guys ready to fly kites?
01:00Yep.
01:00I'm Nia and I'm 27 years old and I'm a stay-at-home mom.
01:05I'm Bernardo.
01:06I'm 41.
01:07I'm a registered nurse.
01:08The park is right here, honey.
01:09Oh, nice.
01:10We met on a dating app.
01:13When I saw him, I said, this is my future husband.
01:16I truly did.
01:17Her beauty blew me away.
01:19You remember when we went to the Kai Festival?
01:21Yeah, it was fun.
01:22We have a blended family.
01:23I have three amazing sons.
01:26My oldest is 21.
01:27I have a 19-year-old and also a 16-year-old who lives with his mom.
01:32We share custody.
01:33I have a five-year-old daughter and our newest addition, Tristan, who is one now.
01:39Oh, there you go.
01:40We were renting not too far from Baltimore.
01:43The owner of the home decided to sell, and now we're in search of our new home.
01:49With us being recently married, this is just a great starting point.
01:54This is kind of what I'm going for.
01:57Like, you see how sleek and modern this looks?
01:59The reason for wanting more of a lavish home, I should say, is I grew up in Honduras in a
02:05coffee farm, dirt floors, very small home.
02:09That's where kind of my ideas are coming from of wanting a bigger home, wanting better.
02:15Whose home is this?
02:16Well, this is someone that I just follow.
02:19My wife is always on social media.
02:21She wants trendy.
02:22I just feel like trends kind of play themselves out.
02:25My grandma, she has a fully brick house in Ohio.
02:29You know, they last forever.
02:30It can be an older home.
02:32If you think about it, 500s, we can add on to whatever we need, and it would also be perfect.
02:38Yeah, but I don't see you really doing that, Bernardo, honestly.
02:41I feel like if we did the 600s, we wouldn't have to worry about anything else.
02:46I don't really like the idea of buying a home that's been already established, only because,
02:52you know, there is these superstitions in my culture that there may be some spirits, ghost
03:00link, roaming around.
03:02Playing eggs.
03:03I don't know where she's, she's all these ghost talks.
03:06I would really like a home with four bedrooms, a home where we can have our family sleepover.
03:13For the primary bedroom, I want it to feel like our oasis.
03:17I love tray ceilings because I'm tall.
03:20I want a deep tub.
03:23We want the finished basement, the office.
03:26Something that's super important to me is having an office space in the home.
03:30I recently graduated from school to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner, so eventually
03:36I want to have my own practice, having an office in the home that's perfect for that situation.
03:42Good job.
03:44Being here at the park really reminds me of how much I want a big yard.
03:49We both agree on a large yard so the kids can have a safe area to run and play.
03:54My wife, she wants chickens.
03:56I grew up with chickens, so I would love the idea of having a chicken coop just so that
04:01every day I go and pick up fresh eggs.
04:05Yeah.
04:06So we'll see.
04:07I don't know.
04:08That's, that's on the back of the list.
04:14They're looking in the Baltimore suburbs within an hour of his job in the city.
04:18I'm really excited for this new home.
04:20It looks very modern.
04:22I don't know.
04:22I can't justify spending this amount of money.
04:25Yeah, but it's close to your job.
04:26It has four bedrooms.
04:27It has all the space that we need.
04:29I think we're here.
04:30Oh, wow.
04:33How are you?
04:34Good.
04:35I really like it, honey.
04:37I think all the black details, the textures are really nice, too.
04:42I prefer brick, but the stone, it's a nice touch, too.
04:45I kind of want to stay under 600, though.
04:47Well, I think we should take a look in there.
04:49You might change your mind.
04:50This house is a new build.
04:52Right now, I would say it's going more into a buyer's market.
04:55Because this home has been on the market for a while, I think we have a little bit of room
04:59to negotiate.
04:59Wow.
05:01This is beautiful.
05:03I love the open concept.
05:05And it has a fireplace.
05:07It's electric, and it changes colors.
05:09But that's everything I don't want.
05:11You know, I prefer that old school brick and mortar fireplace.
05:15Yeah, but we're in the modern days now.
05:19Wow.
05:21And look at this countertop.
05:23Isn't it nice?
05:24This is amazing.
05:25You see, I love how, like, it kind of goes through.
05:28It's called a waterfall.
05:28A waterfall effect.
05:29Oh, okay.
05:30Yeah.
05:30I would definitely post this.
05:32Yeah, I could see you post this.
05:33And I can hose.
05:35I can decorate here.
05:37I like how this is gas.
05:38I don't like the electricity thing on the oven going on.
05:42I do prefer electric because I keep burning myself on these.
05:46You just got to be careful.
05:48I mean, if you stay off your phone and social media, you wouldn't burn yourself.
05:51Hey, be nice.
05:55Hey, let's take a look.
05:57Wow.
05:57Okay.
05:58What do you think about the backyard?
05:59And it's a lot of work.
06:01Yeah.
06:02There's no, like, real deck.
06:04I could, where can I put the grill?
06:06You know, the kids can't run around.
06:08And here would I be able to have a chicken coop?
06:11That is something that the county may not be favorable towards.
06:14I love it.
06:15What?
06:15No chickens.
06:18I love this railing.
06:20I know.
06:20Isn't it nice?
06:21It's a modern metal wire railing.
06:24Right?
06:24Yeah.
06:25This is nice.
06:26This is nice.
06:27It's a pretty good size.
06:28And look at this bathroom.
06:31Wow.
06:31And it connects to the next bedroom.
06:34Yeah, so it can flow through.
06:35We can have Tori over there, Tristan here.
06:39You have your own vision going on, I see.
06:42I sure do.
06:44I don't see any tray ceilings, and that's huge for me.
06:47But look at the bathroom.
06:49The bathroom is beautiful.
06:50And, Bernardo, you're going to like the tub.
06:53I think I could try to fit in there.
06:55This whole shot right here will be so cute.
07:00I pick up a good energy here.
07:03No spirits.
07:04I think that's a plus.
07:05I love coming down here.
07:07I love seeing all this modern space.
07:09It's such a luxury grand entrance to your first level.
07:15I can already see a nice picture here, or even a mirror.
07:18With this price, I don't think we're going to be able to add any mirrors or pictures.
07:23Hey!
07:24What you get is what you see.
07:25So this is like a living space?
07:27Yeah, you have your living space here.
07:29Jalen, Zion, and Xavion would definitely enjoy this area.
07:32Great for entertainment.
07:33Yeah.
07:34The kids may be over there, the little ones.
07:36Okay.
07:37Wow!
07:38I love the marble details.
07:40So this is the fourth bedroom.
07:45Yeah, I think this would have to be the office, but my only concern now is if the kids are
07:51down here and the teenagers are playing games, you know.
07:55Yeah, but that's why you got a door here.
07:59This is definitely my favorite part of the home, this whole space.
08:03But that price is too steep.
08:06I will say this.
08:07It has been sitting on the market for a little bit.
08:09Mike can make some magic with negotiating.
08:11Okay, under $600,000 magic.
08:15I'm interested in that.
08:15You know, I can definitely see what I can do.
08:17We are interested in that.
08:18So I would say let's see.
08:21We're going to be way over budget.
08:23I grew up in an apartment for a while, and it wasn't until high school when my mom purchased
08:28her first home.
08:29So for me, this is such a huge milestone.
08:33It's essential for me to start this chapter off on the right foot.
08:36So Chantre finds a lower-priced, older home for Bernardo, but Nia's a tough sell.
08:43I just don't like how it looks so used up.
08:46This neighborhood looks very nice, but this house was built in the 1960s.
08:59Who knows how many people have lived there?
09:01At 485, that just opens the door for so many DIY stuff like I can do.
09:06What do you guys think of this beautiful colonial home?
09:12I think it's okay.
09:13This brick is timeless.
09:15It's going to last forever.
09:16Yep.
09:16Good start, right?
09:17Good start.
09:18Okay.
09:21Oh, wow.
09:22This is a nice entrance.
09:24Yeah, the wood is nice.
09:26Uh-huh.
09:27Look at this fireplace.
09:29This is amazing.
09:30This reminds me of my grandma's house.
09:32I just don't like how it looks so used up.
09:35The house was built in 1963.
09:38Yeah.
09:38So I'm pretty sure it's been used.
09:40By many people, I'm sure.
09:43Yes, by many people.
09:45And what is this here?
09:47So that would be considered radiator floor heating there.
09:50Old school stuff.
09:51I've never seen that before.
09:54It's a nice dining room area.
09:57But it's pretty small.
09:58But I like the two-tone paint job they did.
10:01Well, the light fixture is modern.
10:03This was an update.
10:04Watch your head when you...
10:05Oh, my God.
10:06Watch your head over.
10:07You've never had to have that problem.
10:10Oh, I do like this cabinet.
10:14Wow.
10:15And this space here, this is like a second dining room.
10:18Yeah.
10:19Which is...
10:20I really, really like this space.
10:22Would help out with your additional space from the first one that we've seen.
10:25This kind of opens the room up a little more.
10:27This is a decent-sized yard.
10:33Yeah, this feels really homey.
10:35With it being no HOA, you can have up to six chickens.
10:39Wow, six?
10:40Yeah.
10:41I don't know about...
10:42I don't know about that.
10:43I'll probably start with two or three.
10:44Yeah, yeah.
10:45That can change over time, you know, with the regulations of, you know, the county and things like that.
10:50What are you going to do with chickens anyway?
10:51What do you mean?
10:52We'll have fresh eggs every morning.
10:54There's a grocery store around the corner.
10:55But they're not fresh.
11:00Is this a bedroom or an office?
11:02It's a bedroom.
11:03But if you wanted to use it for an office, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to.
11:07With my line of profession, just we have to have like a really private area.
11:12Okay.
11:12As we look around, we can just kind of see where that space would be.
11:16Second bedroom.
11:17The windows are fairly small.
11:19But they are new.
11:21We're, you know, moving in the modern direction a little bit.
11:25I don't know.
11:27Another tiny bedroom.
11:28I love the upgrades in this bathroom.
11:33I could see you doing a few selfies over here somewhere.
11:36In the bathroom?
11:38Who knows?
11:38It's too small.
11:40So now we have the larger room, the owners.
11:42You know, this primary bedroom is nice and all, but it's missing the tray ceilings.
11:47Well, let's see how you feel about the bathroom.
11:51Oh.
11:52Oh, wow.
11:53It is pretty.
11:54Yeah, I love the floors.
11:55Wow, but this shower is small and there's no tub.
11:59We can barely fit here together.
12:01There's no double sink.
12:03We don't need to be together in the bathroom.
12:05Bernardo, what if we're rushing, getting ready?
12:08Ah, okay.
12:10I don't think this is going to work out for us.
12:13I don't see any options up here for an office.
12:15So maybe in a basement.
12:18Yeah.
12:20Carpeted basement.
12:21I think this would be my area.
12:23I love the recessed lights.
12:24This is nice.
12:25Well, here's some more space.
12:27This sink is giving me creepy vibes.
12:30It looks so scary.
12:32I want to get out of here.
12:33I'm not a fan of this basement, especially with this very tight little hallway here.
12:39Maybe we can get rid of this.
12:40Yeah, absolutely.
12:41Maybe.
12:42We'll see, honey.
12:43All right.
12:43It's a possibility.
12:45It reminds me of my grandma, and I really do love that.
12:48This price point is just so incredible.
12:51I do like the backyard.
12:53I just really wish that this home was a little bit more modern.
12:57So Sean Trey tries another new build, but with not much time to find it before Bernardo
13:01and Nia lose their rental, it'll come with compromises.
13:05I know you guys didn't want to share a bathroom with the kids.
13:07Honey.
13:08Thanks for driving today, Sean Trey.
13:19You're welcome.
13:21They're seeing a home today that's an hour from his job, but it's a lower price and brand
13:25new.
13:26So it's definitely going to be some construction going on.
13:28It's going to get in the way of, you know, the kids playing outside, I think.
13:32Well, the good thing about that is it won't be forever.
13:35There is an HOA.
13:36So I can't have a chicken coop?
13:40Unfortunately not.
13:41But I know that you guys love this home.
13:45We have a traditional style home with craftsman-like elements.
13:48I do like the black details.
13:51Okay.
13:51Siding, okay.
13:52Yeah, it actually looks great.
13:54Yeah, I would prefer brick or stone.
13:56But it looks great.
13:57Like, the color is great.
13:58It won't look dirty if it rains over time.
14:03Wow.
14:04Yeah.
14:04Look at the office, baby.
14:06Yeah, definitely wanted an office, so this is good.
14:11I would consider a formal dining room.
14:12I don't know about, like, this setup at all.
14:15Maybe it's the light fixture there.
14:17Or possibly something that can be changed out later.
14:20Something you could DIY, honey.
14:22There you go.
14:24I love the stairs.
14:26This is my favorite part of the house.
14:28Are beautiful.
14:29The kids can take their prom pictures here.
14:31I don't know.
14:32I just, I feel like the stairs look too new.
14:34I've seen this color.
14:36This is what's in right now.
14:37Yep, it's in.
14:38Very trendy.
14:39We're trying to stay away from trendy.
14:42I love this room.
14:43It's a lot of space here to host.
14:45Yeah.
14:46Maybe add some used furniture or something.
14:49What?
14:50Used furniture.
14:50I mean, we're trying to, you know, keep things narrow a little bit.
14:57What about the fact that, no, it doesn't have a fireplace.
14:59Yeah.
15:00You know, I like that old brick.
15:02Yeah.
15:03But see, that's what I was telling you, what the electric ones.
15:07Our kids' fingers won't be burnt.
15:10They make gates.
15:11The kitchen.
15:12I know this was a big deal for you.
15:14I'm not so crazy about this color though.
15:16But you know, these kids, they're touching everything.
15:19I feel like the darker, the better.
15:22What is this thing?
15:24Wow.
15:24This here is to protect you guys from falling out.
15:27To protect the kids from falling out because there's no deck.
15:29I really love the size of this yard.
15:32Yeah, but we ought to add a lot to this.
15:34Yeah, but you know, we can always hire somebody to do the deck for us.
15:37How much would it cost if we did one?
15:40Anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000.
15:42So we're creeping up to $6,000 real quick.
15:47All right.
15:50It smells new here.
15:51I like that.
15:53Wow, this is really big.
15:55I love this space.
15:56Yeah, I can see us doing a little entertainment here.
16:01I do like the feeling I get when I'm in this house so far.
16:05No spirits.
16:06No spirits.
16:08I'm paying an extra $20,000 for no spirits, right?
16:11Oh, wow.
16:12This room is like right off the stairs.
16:15I think this will be good for Tori.
16:17I like this hallway here.
16:19Yeah, the openness of it?
16:21Yes.
16:21Okay.
16:22Wow, this is a nice touch.
16:24You know, the rooms are back to back.
16:26Yeah, this is pretty big.
16:28And now for Tristan.
16:31I know you guys didn't want to share a bathroom with the kids.
16:34Yeah.
16:34There's a spider.
16:35A spirit with a spider.
16:36Yeah, there's a spirit in that one?
16:38No, thank goodness.
16:39Are you sure?
16:40It's just a spider.
16:43This is amazing.
16:44Yeah, I really like these ceilings.
16:47Yeah, the tray ceilings.
16:48This is exactly what I've been looking for.
16:53Oh, I already love what I see.
16:57Do you see how the tile goes all the way up?
16:59Wow, this is this bathroom.
17:01I wasn't expecting this.
17:02Yeah.
17:02This is impressive.
17:05Look at these stairs, honey.
17:06I mean, the steps.
17:07I literally feel like a queen coming down here.
17:10Yeah.
17:11I love that.
17:12I do want to give you that effect, you know?
17:13I like the price point, but this house is pretty sterile to me, and I can't build a deck.
17:21You know, that's going to be...
17:22Yeah, but we could always hire somebody.
17:24Obviously, you wouldn't build it.
17:25No, but there's more money I have to spend.
17:28Why would I want to do that?
17:29I think we need to sit down and look at the numbers and figure things out.
17:34Newlyweds, Nia and Bernardo's rental is being sold, so they're running out of time to decide
17:47on a home for their blended family.
17:50The home in Owings Mills, that's a very beautiful home.
17:55It's very modern.
17:56I love the kitchen.
17:58Yeah.
17:58And the grand entrance was very beautiful.
18:01And it also has that area for my office.
18:04But $629,900, it doesn't justify all that.
18:08It's a new home.
18:09We wouldn't have to make renovations.
18:11Actually, we would.
18:13It doesn't have a patio or area to entertain anyone.
18:17I really like that older Colonial with the fireplace, those windows.
18:22That was very cozy.
18:23And the brick from the outside was just stunning.
18:26The yard is pretty big.
18:27The basement.
18:29It's a great space for my office.
18:31It was built in 1963.
18:32Can you imagine how many spirits have been in that home?
18:36We'll get it flushed out or cleansed or whatever you need.
18:39I don't know about that.
18:40That price is perfect.
18:41It's a lot of money for some updates.
18:44We could take up that wall.
18:45No money.
18:45That house requires a lot of work.
18:47What do you think about that new build we saw with Craftsman Elements?
18:53It's a brand new home.
18:54Those stairs were very beautiful.
18:56Yeah.
18:56I absolutely love that primary.
18:59You know, they have the tray ceilings that I've been wanting.
19:02And it has the office.
19:03I really love that kitchen, though.
19:05The dark cabinets look great.
19:08Not as much character as I would like.
19:10No fireplace.
19:11It's a little further out than I would like from my job.
19:15But the yard is pretty big.
19:17We can definitely build a patio or a deck.
19:21When we start to think about adding on, we're pushing over our bottom line.
19:27It just makes me feel a little uncomfortable.
19:40These cabinets have really grown on me.
19:43We decided to buy the brand new Craftsman Style home, and we love it.
19:48No one has ever lived here.
19:50It's great energy.
19:51It has a beautiful office, a really huge dining area, so when the boys come over and
19:56the little kids are here, we all can just enjoy mail together.
20:00I kind of like this, like, stainless look compared to the other homes.
20:05This kind of just adds everything we both want at a nice little package price.
20:11This home gives me a lot of opportunity to just put a couple of touches on it,
20:16just to give it a little more character.
20:18Bernardo bought his dream fireplace.
20:21It's an electric fireplace.
20:24It's a little compromise on that.
20:26My idea of this whole patio is to do pavers.
20:30We're going to do some stairs, and we're going to set up a big patio.
20:34I can't have my chicken coop, but there is plenty of farms out here.
20:39Ta-da!
20:41Wow, honey, you did that!
20:44This location puts me a little further out than I would like to for work,
20:48but hopefully I'll transition into working from home pretty soon.
20:51I definitely want to see a runner here.
20:53Okay, maybe like a natural, neutral...
20:55Yeah, neutral color, yeah.
20:56We just got married a few months back, and it just feels so great to have an accomplishment of purchasing a first home so soon.
21:05Coming from humble beginnings, this home is definitely a luxury that I'm very proud of,
21:17and I know my family is also very proud to see these accomplishments.
21:22I'm just kind of waiting to add some of my sparkle and razzle-dazzle.
21:27You are the razzle-dazzle.
21:28Ha-ha-ha!
