Back to the Frontier Season 1 Episode 2- No Place Like Homestead - 1080p
Transcript
00:00three families have gone back in time and swapped their 21st century lives for an 1880s homestead
00:13where are my walls so far they've been stripped of modern comforts that's the bathroom what's
00:22the nose pipe before that is not to wipe your butt with no there's only two beds i'm not sharing a bed
00:32me neither you guys are acting like kind of snooty and snotty and they got a taste it's canned
00:38hell of their new reality your success or failure will be judged but frontier living's about to get
00:48a whole lot tougher whatever i brought my family into
00:51it's cold in here freezing freezing cold
01:16i'm so stiff from sleeping in one position all night our three families have survived their
01:24first night on the frontier how'd you sleep it's horrible there's no white noise no white noise
01:32there is the sound of the stream but it's very faint though it's late july last night the temperature
01:42dropped to 50 degrees fahrenheit it was freezing in here last it was cold and the lopers had only a
01:49tarp for protection i need to wash my face what i'm supposed to do how i wash my face splash
01:58y'all are killing me
02:03haven't done this in a while mom
02:07joaquin feels like he has walked back into his past and he's okay but i'm completely a fish out of water
02:16i am missing hot water right now throughout the night i think i asked myself a hundred times can i
02:26really do this good morning 1880s sleep hey time to get up my we have a long day ahead of us we got
02:35to get the wall fixed today how long can we endure without a front wall without a front door
02:41i am worried that we're going to have visitor whether it's to be a bear a coyote a wolf whatever
02:48there's no protection here like none
02:52can we get rid of the chamber pot because it's terrible the longer it sits in here the more it
02:59smells like urine this is delightful for guidance on their new normal
03:06the families turn to the almanac
03:11see what it has to say
03:13their go-to guide for frontier living
03:16greetings the next few days will be about settling into your new home and the 1880s way of life
03:23your priorities are exactly the same as an 1880s homesteaders
03:27arriving on their new plot of land you need to make sure your cabin is safe and comfortable
03:32and the family needs to be fed there'll be plenty more to get on with later
03:38but first we gotta get this wall done
03:41so i feel like our priorities are the outhouse
03:47yes we definitely need to work out some privacy
03:49i need to go
03:50try to avoid the outhouse but um i think my time is up
03:59while jason tests out his back to basics bathroom
04:05mosquito
04:05the hall kids are struggling with their new sleeping arrangements
04:10jet was all on top of me and he does not know the definition of personal space
04:15well you were out in a strength position so your butt was like in my space
04:21i'm missing like my queen-sized bed
04:26it's like bumper cars sharing a bed with my sisters because they want all the room to themselves
04:32i don't think i can manage this this needs to be fixed immediately
04:37sleeping in the same bed all summer ain't gonna cut it
04:41dad what are you doing
04:43we need another bed plan
04:45our pantries look a little bare
04:48the families need to fuel up for a day of manual labor
04:53well i guess our breakfast options are what
04:55limited
04:56but the supplies they arrived with are not going to last much longer
05:01bread and honey
05:03or honey and bread
05:05i mean like realistically could we go to the market here in the 1880s and get that get flour
05:14get sugar because i'm gonna need some of that mama what supermarket do they have here
05:22like what did we really walk into where does the rest of our food come from what is it gonna look like
05:27luckily historian dr jacob freefeld is here with answers on how the families can keep themselves fed
05:38knock knock
05:41hi lopers
05:42hi
05:43joaquin good to see you again
05:44please have a seat jacob
05:45oh come on
05:46how's the space treating you
05:48um you treated us very cold
05:50last night
05:51oh got a little chilly did it
05:53well stacy i brought some stuff that i think are going to help you
05:56as you push forward
05:57wow i get something
05:59as a woman in the 1880s i get something
06:03but what's the some money
06:09and homesteaders would have had money you would have come with your life savings so how much do you
06:12have there okay 10 15 20 and 30. so we have 30 dollars this is our life savings in 1880.
06:24all three families have been given the same amount of money
06:28we are giving you 30 dollars one dollar was equal to about 30 dollars in today's money
06:35and they'll have to make it last so 30 dollars would give you a thousand dollars spending power
06:42here it is wow the average weekly expenditure for a family of homesteaders like you is about a dollar
06:5175 a week which is sort of close to right like 60 dollars there are going to be opportunities when
06:55you'll need to spend money and other times when you're going to have the choice so it's really
06:59important to keep an eye on how much money you have because the end you're going to come back to
07:03the land office to prove up your homestead and that's got a fee with it so you want to make
07:07sure you've still got six dollars left to get that final land certificate okay okay but the money's
07:13not going to be much good if you don't have a place to spend it that is true you want to take a
07:17look at ah new grocery and dry goods great reduction in prices where have you been
07:29in the 1880s the general store was often used as a bank post office social club and even as a local
07:36undertakers but you're going to have access to a general store to buy goods from i mean you can't
07:42grow sugar out here right cinnamon nutmeg like those seasonings that i i would want yeah your store
07:50is about two miles away you can take a walk there later today if you'd like oh wow thank you i've left
07:58you with some stuff to talk about here listen yes you have and thank you for coming by i expect there to
08:04be a door the next time i'm here i expect that to be one too see you soon thank you i gotta give him
08:11a round of applause while he leaves like he's the best thing that has happened to me since i've been in the
08:161880s yes i get to go shopping he heard your cries he heard my prayers he heard my cries
08:25the money gotta act like this but no more than 175 stacy yes sir i'm gonna take mama with me mama is
08:36very frugal so she can kind of help me out in that area all right my biggest concern with stacy going to
08:44the general store as as always her spending too much just take like two or four dollars or just three
08:50dollars so i can make sure that i stay within that budget we cannot spend it all in one time
08:56stacy okay all right i get it you get it i get it got it now who's gonna tell the hannah riggs coffee beans
09:0740 cents per pound that's a lot of money no actually that's not terrible do you want to see your daddy
09:13smiling when we go shopping for groceries we don't really have a budget you know we get what we
09:20need and we throw in some wants in there as well we probably eat out three or four times a week
09:26but now we have to plan for every single meal and make sure that we have what we need let's do
09:31some grocery shopping i like to spend money good food means good mood come on buddy let's go shopping
09:42i don't even know if this is a trail i think you nailed it while half the homesteaders head out
09:48for supplies i've never walked to the store before getting our cardio in the rest have a tougher task
09:57last trip to the broken outhouse let's get this first yeah while joe and ethan build a bathroom
10:06jerryman jet tackle the bed here it goes that's nice look at that that was a nice cut
10:19we got our foot boards we got our head boards we got our side rails this is where it gets tricky
10:27our biggest challenge is going to be these joints you can't get that wrong it has to line up perfect
10:32there's a lot of pressure to get the bed made because there's five of us sleeping in two beds
10:36all right so i'd rather do it right take a little longer than do it wrong and have to redo it there
10:42you go and you got to go and do other stuff as well this is a long long process it's going to be a
10:49while ken okay that bed definitely needs to get made i just want to be able to spread my arms and legs
10:57around without playing bumper cars but jeremy has other ideas so the bed's an ongoing project but the
11:08thing is i really have been wanting a garden like this for a long time each homestead has a kitchen
11:14garden to grow their own produce if i loosen up the dirt in between all the vegetables less chance of
11:24the weeds to kind of grow it's very important job too i'm not sure the kids would agree jeremy
11:32whoo i need an electric saw the family with the longest to-do list is the lopers i have to fix this
11:44wall secure this cabin we need a door and we need windows hold your hand down len hold it up or down
11:52down there we go you ain't got to push on it don't push on it yes sir let it go you hold that in
12:02that's why i said hold it up so it wouldn't break yes sir i grew up working on stuff like this with
12:14my uncles with my grandfather teaching me these skills but i'm here by myself all i have are my
12:20boys with me and they've never done something like this what i always tell you it's not just about
12:25working it's knowing how to work all right yes sir so hold that when i'm holding that up don't let it
12:30break off working with my dad to build this wall put this door up it's a little challenging because
12:38you know he's always talking about but you don't know how to work you don't know how to work how
12:41do you know i don't know how to work all right what i want to do is lift it up i need a flush come on
12:47up yes sir
12:53on top of me having to get this done my anxiety is also high because i know my wife when she gets in
12:58the store with money deep breaths joaquin well mom we're almost there what a walk
13:09oh my
13:12this is very exciting
13:18hello ladies good afternoon it's stacy loper hello there i'm trevor trevor
13:24early milk first nice to meet you all right please feel free to browse oh thank you
13:32their supermarket for the summer is filled with must-have goods for life on the frontier
13:39mom what is the washboard oh there's the washboard so that's kind of hair products there
13:45and then the pomade man lady slicked the hair down definitely have to keep that in mind i took the
13:52liberty to prepare just some necessities all right it's only a dollar 75 but it'll last you for the
14:00whole week peaches pears two cans of corned beef a bag of flour but that's just your base you could
14:07purchase other things as well penny candies
14:13uh if you could no we don't want to splurge today we want my husband to be proud of us yeah but only a
14:21penny a penny for a scoop i recommend the licorice it's that's what i consider licorice okay okay
14:29we'll we'll we'll we'll take the licorice you got it i'll have that delivered out to your uh cabin thank
14:39you oh max will be happy oh yes yes gilbert's general store oh that's so cute so cute hello ladies welcome
14:53hi oh wow you have a good store here there's lots of stuff are you looking for any food stock for the
15:01week or yes that's what we really came for could i recommend a base supplies for the week for you
15:07perhaps that'd be good is there anything else we can add i need potatoes there you go thank you
15:16thank you bye so far two of our families have been cautious with their cash hey come on in welcome
15:25hi how's it going we need we need a lot of groceries that's a dollar 75 for the base okay
15:32let's do the coffee sure but one has the urge to splurge hopefully daddy joe would love the almonds
15:38i will put for ketchup jason is definitely the person that is more likely to spend more he ends
15:46up adding a bunch of random candy or some other products that we really don't need so hopefully
15:51he just doesn't overspend maybe one more salmon maybe with candy corn i feel like a deck of cards
15:58would be a good thing i will do the hard candy as well sure so your grand total is 283
16:06thank you mr gilbert my pleasure
16:12i wonder if i could have bought a stuffy i did not see any stuffies look at the outhouse
16:18they got it done oh they actually fixed it they're here how's the store we got a lot of the basics of
16:24flour and cornmeal we got a bottle of ketchup we got a couple pieces of candy and the deck of cards
16:36and we did get almonds how much did we spend in total 283. two dollars 83 cents
16:45i was a little surprised about the almonds but jason was thinking of me so i really appreciate that
16:50how much you spend one dollar and seventy six cents we spent a penny over i'm proud of you and i bought
17:03y'all some candy oh wow you i told you to watch her i want to splurge a little bit for the grandkids
17:17thank you nana you're welcome thank you nana you welcome landed all right we almost have one side
17:24done boys yeah ready one two hey babe yeah mom when we get in that front door baby it'll be first thing in
17:33the morning i do not feel good going in to tonight i need four walls to engulf me and my family so that
17:46i can feel safe and secure the family's first full day on the frontier is drawing to a close did
17:58you finish the bed oh not the bed no no we decided to weed the garden instead
18:08so it looks like we're all sharing a bed tonight i expected the bed to be done pretty quickly
18:15and it's still not done it's a lot harder than it looks to cut out those joins
18:19so i was just gonna do it tomorrow okay all right all right good night sweet dreams
18:31i am missing my bed at home we're both feeling homesick everything is starting to settle in this
18:38house this the living situation it's just all so new it's yeah it's just hard with drugs
18:49it's just hard with drugs please i can't take that it's already bad enough
19:14one two three
19:19oh it's cold
19:27all right well guys this is breakfast for today pears peaches and this lovely bread
19:34the trip to the store has helped bolsters supplies it's a good little start i like it thank you but
19:41the families haven't had a hot meal since they got here we need to learn how to use the stove
19:46so today's task is cooking over an 1880s cast iron stove sounds simple enough i'm wishing that i
19:56had an air fryer right about now
20:01i've never made fire before i um yeah i don't cook i don't i don't have to do any of this all of
20:10this is going to be a challenge i feel like i'm playing in the trash my wife is not used to doing
20:17the things that a 1880s wife would normally do when it comes to all the cooking the cleaning washing of
20:24dishes and clothes and stuff me and the boys normally do that from a preparation standpoint about three to
20:29four hours to four hours to have dinner ready so we need to start dinner at least by noon
20:39okay what am i doing here what did i sign up for then it's going out
20:46i don't know what to do next i don't like doing stuff i'm not good at i'm not good at this
21:01this is not what i do to know that it's depending on me that my family eats hot food it's not fair
21:09what's wrong stacy what am i supposed to do to get it to to come over to the other side you got the
21:22great compass i don't know listen you got a good fight going right now you hear it rolling
21:31my mother-in-law is an asset just the wisdom that she brings that knowledge of how she lived
21:43add some more wood the more wood you have and what heart is going to get so you mean tell me i
21:50got to keep adding to this all day long as often as you need it what yes ma'am i just have to give
21:58them all the information the knowledge that i have and the know-how and just believe that they'll
22:04be able to do it it will get better we'll see she will not be here with us the entire time
22:13when she leaves let's pray and hope that we come out of this alive
22:20so jason what do we think is our potatoes also hoping for their first hot meal
22:26the hannah rigs are planting a vegetable soup i have no idea what a potato looks like
22:33if they can find the ingredients that is my theory is this is potato
22:40the potatoes are under the ground
22:44i feel like this is not it i'm pretty sure they're peas joe so i feel like these are weeds
22:51close swiss chard this is cabbage beetroot
22:58if i was home i'd just go search on the internet and see what a potato looks like
23:01i didn't anticipate it would be this difficult just to find three vegetables for dinner tonight
23:06the garden it is overwhelming there's a lot of pressure there's a lot of stress
23:11we need to get the boys fed but we don't know what any of this is we have something it's a potato
23:17it's a potato i think these are going to be the most delicious potatoes we've ever had in our
23:22lives probably not but no
23:29recipe for boiled onions the halls are also searching for a delicious dinner from a selection
23:37of authentic 1880s recipes no boiled onions over bread and lard that's disgusting i was using that
23:45large for my eyebrow gel i do not want to eat that it says boil 10 minutes pour off this water again
23:52add boiling water boil a few minutes and drain a second time pour in boiling water add salt and boil
23:59for one hour i'm not doing all that let's just make our own recipe because at home i don't use recipes
24:05so let's just boil these for an hour okay i need more water have done three trips for water we've done
24:17a trip to wash the potatoes a trip to wash the onions a trip to wash the pot it's like 16 trips for
24:24one meal and we're not even started uh like that i guess we're doing another trip for water
24:35what am i supposed to do just sit here and look pretty well i guess so that should be easy enough
24:42all right so about three or four more then we'll put the door in
24:58using a recipe to make some potato type stone this is very intimidating i don't do this
25:03it doesn't need to be too thick right mom okay i hope this is what a stone's supposed to look like
25:14what you think i didn't expect you to do as well as you were doing
25:20mama i wish you 100 on that one honey
25:23stacy yes baby i got your door on but you but you oh yes what you think i love it joaquin awesome
25:37i can get a kiss or something get off me i gotta go cook
25:40all right four hours later dinner is served
25:59you ready all right i think it's gonna be delicious and harder that way i think so
26:06we have prepared you some boiled onions and some fresh corn
26:11sounds good yeah i definitely want to know how the scones taste y'all
26:19mama this tastes good the food is amazing hands down oh thank you i'm feeling much better than i
26:29did coming into this thing to see my kids say i am enjoying this this tastes really good i was like
26:35yes that is much more fulfilling to me that makes this more purposeful for me out of five stars how
26:44many stars would you give our soup 4.8 4.8 okay well that is really good cheers cheers to potatoes
26:53ready yeah
27:00oh god
27:00it's different oh that's terrible tastes sweet we have to boil the onion for two hours geez so is
27:11this what homesteaders ate back then i guess it was in the almanac it wasn't a great fulfilling meal it
27:19wasn't worth the four hours of cooking maybe you should have stuck to the recipe after all you like it
27:30everybody feel a little safer but the job's not done the lobers finally have a wall
27:37but the work is far from over we have to fill up some of these cracks and spaces that allow all the
27:42wind and stuff in at night so we need some help there's a page get the almanac this says homesteading
27:49and community having not seen their neighbors since they arrived it's time to rope in some reinforcements
27:57many homesteads were situated within a larger community who could be called on in the times of
28:03needs turning a difficult or tedious task into a social event community events like this were called
28:09bees they were followed by a community meal or celebration
28:15oh okay just like we held the gatherings in our in our neighborhood yeah we grow community back at
28:24home and it is just so important to be able to laugh and smile and talk and help somebody else to know
28:31that in the 1880s that's what they believed in was community yeah no i love this becoming a community
28:38means more work done quicker it's not like a win-win situation it does so should we ask them
28:44absolutely all right so this invite is going to go out we're going to slip it up under people's doors
28:52and we just hope for the best you check for spiders yeah all right good night good night
29:14i found something we have a note dear neighbors we are determined to create a comfortable and safe
29:26home in the spirit of the 1880s homesteading community we would like to invite you to help us
29:33in return we will help you finish your cabin the lopers well this is very interesting because i have a busy
29:41day ahead of me i've got a lot planned so i i don't know how much time i have what if they could help
29:46you with the bed you know the bed is just a time killer it's just i don't really need help you know
29:51i don't need extra dead weight
29:56i think that you should help them regardless it's just being good neighbors
30:00i think community is really important i think it's super beneficial to have neighbors looking
30:09out for you the halls are a very tight knitted family and i think sometimes that can be more
30:16downfall hey this might be the little spark that starts a community where we can all work together
30:22so let's see where this takes us i think it's good karma to help others right and that's what we want
30:31to shout that we want to help people i am a lone ranger i don't have a lot of friends because i
30:37do my own thing i've learned all my life i can never count on people
30:41hi mama daddy one of the rigs are here hello hey how you doing it's good to finally see some
30:57people yeah good to finally see you as well i was thrilled to get the invitation from the lopers i
31:03wanted to get to know them a lot better your place looks nice yeah when we first got here
31:08the front wall just some beans we had a open concept out house
31:15no privacy at all but we do help our neighbors back home in texas as well and they help us too
31:20so it's kind of a normal thing for us what's your biggest pain point right now so at night we have
31:26a mosquitoes company i'll tell you what we can start at fill up some of these cracks and spaces hey fellas
31:32hey jim how are you how you doing man what you guys up to i think the same thing everybody's up to
31:37yeah getting our homestead in order wow nice what was your situation um we don't have enough beds for
31:43our family so i'm in the process of making a bed oh wow yeah well i wish you'd have been here a few
31:48days ago yeah when there was nothing up here and when i say nothing i mean nothing but some frames
31:54really yeah we had no front wall wow you know what your house is actually better than ours
31:59seriously you got smooth boards i got more gaps than you like my place is nowhere near as good as
32:06this like wow i gotta catch up to you guys like i got a lot of work to do they they're bugging me on
32:11the bed and just want life a little easier you know i'll tell you what what i'm hearing is we all need
32:16some help so um if you could spare a little time with me today and we're more than willing just to cut it
32:21off short and come help you yeah i don't really need help yet right yet okay i am in the middle of
32:28something like what i need is time if you came over to help me with that bed we would stand around
32:33not knowing what to do and it would be terrible i don't like that i mean come on dude we're more than
32:41willing to to lend a helping hand um but right now we man with my house i just want to get it finished
32:46outside especially filling in some of these spaces yeah but it's these biggest ones okay
32:52all right well let's get to work we should get this done cracking here
32:58jeremy is struggling even if we don't know what to do i believe four more hands are better than two
33:07i don't like asking for help because uh a lot of times people make me feel like i owe them
33:12and i don't want to feel like i owe anybody
33:14you don't know the skill set you don't know the asset that they could be
33:19but you don't want to give it an opportunity for them to show you that your choice
33:27i think joaquin and his family and our family we have each other's backs and we'll be there
33:32jeremy hasn't quite built that up so that's on him right now if i had to choose the one in three
33:40that fails i feel like it's he's most likely to fail i i only have so much time i can help you guys
33:46because i got a family that's going to be bugging me oh let's do it
33:52that irritated me
34:01fresh from building friendships the last thing i have to really do is drill all these holes so we
34:06can weave the rope through jeremy is finally building the bed
34:12you don't want this thing wobbling around you want it straight okay now we shake it
34:20wait did we check this straw for like bugs and stuff no that's why we roll around on it so they'll die
34:27okay okay yeah it's just not gonna work this is not a woman's job in the 1880s but it's my job
34:43right yeah finish the mattress let's try it out
34:48go you're missing half of it the bed stinks we're gonna wake up smelling like hay we already stink
34:57maybe you stink now the moment of truth
