01:20home from the future come on in let's go holy moly
01:27this is sick this place is so beautiful and immaculate who designed this i did you did yep
01:39you're a designer by trade designer construction development the reason why we're selling is
01:44because we want to move to arizona we're definitely ready for something new definitely ready for a
01:49change what was the inspiration it was inspired by sci-fi films star wars came out for the first time
01:56when i was a child and i've been fascinated with sci-fi films since then it's like a movie tron legacy
02:01and it was inspired by what does a house look like in the year 2050 we had an architect that gave us a
02:08basic floor plan a friend of mine imported the floor plan into his 3d rendering programs
02:14we started playing around with the different ideas and the house just kind of got out of control
02:19he also designed some of the furniture you designed the furniture yeah no way a lot of things
02:25but you designed this yes he did yes i did he designed them to where we can kind of move them
02:29around connect them this is so smart we've got something really cool to show you okay i'm gonna hit
02:35my phone here now look behind you oh no yeah oh my gosh where is it coming from we built a pit
02:49that's about five feet down into the slab how did you know how to do that well uh we didn't so uh
02:56that's why it took about 200 hours to actually get it all to work right tv came out of nowhere
03:02if anything the fact that he was doing everything on his phone i still got a flip phone this is
03:08certainly a statement right here what is that so it's a suspended fireplace with a bookmatch marble
03:13we have six different slabs we had to build a special steel frame in order to hold the weight i mean
03:20like the actual you know where the fire comes from is just so stunning i'm lucky enough where she gave
03:24me the freedom to do what i wanted we have very similar styles we like the same things so i feel like
03:31our home reflects both of us it looks really good at night time because you have all the lights
03:36popping it just sets the mood i've come home from work before and there are people outside of their
03:41car standing across the street like looking up like they're looking at a ufo and i pull them they're
03:46like do you live here i get it well and i can't help but notice the race car in the room what is this
03:55so i came up with an idea of doing a two cars stacked behind each other garage when i figured
04:02that out i was like wait a second the living room is on the other side of here what if we put a window
04:06so it's like in a glass case what is your take on having a car in your living room i love it i love
04:13cars i actually did a ferrari racing school i went 180 on the track you did yeah she actually beat my top
04:19if this is how you want to display something that is beautiful to you i ain't mad at it
04:26you want something for the kitchen deer yes hold on it's just so beautifully done i mean like i even
04:33love this light above the car here you guys yes we love chandeliers as a matter of fact one of my
04:39favorite chandeliers is in our dining room right over this way
04:41oh yeah so this chandelier is called melt me it's from italy it's morano glass the concept is supposed
04:54to look like it's melting and it's been in a fire oh i see like the melty stuff i see what you're saying
04:58the chandelier looks like me after a day of touring houses
05:03just again just a little misshaping you can still tell what it is but it ain't as cute as it was when
05:11it started everywhere i look there is something new and spectacular i see straight over here into
05:17the kitchen there's just all this indoor outdoor space this is fascinating we have lots more to show
05:23you so let's go this way please come on upstairs the glass we can see all the way through
05:31you'll want to hook a left here the left yep another left yep this way yes
05:40welcome to our fun room
05:44this is wild this is cool
05:51this is designed much differently right than a lot of the rest of the house yeah i kind of wanted to
06:00separate this off from the rest of the house and it'd be a nightclub kind of a deal so we did double
06:05drywall in here patted the walls for acoustics curved out the ceiling like late at night when we have
06:10like the music blasting in here you can't really hear it out there at all but i'm seeing all sorts
06:15of different prints and like just fascinating different textures fabrics is this velvet yes it's velvet
06:22and i'm ocd so stop that i am too so it goes right back to where it was this is g-g-g-gorgeous i wish you all the best for your open house i'm gonna get out of your hair but thank you so much this is a real treat
06:39bye everybody might sci-fi house claim the crown as the wildest home transforming a home based on a love for sci-fi movies is quite original
06:51between custom furniture a tv emerging from the floor and all the smart home elements the futuristic themes are seen throughout
07:00and it's a wild display to have not one but two exotic sports cars serve as living room art pieces
07:10i'm heading 45 minutes east of minneapolis to river falls wisconsin a home nicknamed the hobbit house was
07:20recently bought by a designer and i'm looking forward to checking it out today but first
07:26i've got to find it i was told there's a house here
07:34it's in the ground
07:35hello hello kim i'm kim and i'm the owner of the wisconsin hobbit house
07:54is this like a bunker or a bomb shelter it's a bermed earth home it was built into the hillside to be sort
08:02of recaptured by the landscape so what you're looking at is two quonset huts and there is a wood
08:08construction hallway that connects the two amazing when i'm looking at this are we going underground
08:14when we enter here no we're actually on grade but we are built into the hillside i feel like we might
08:20be splitting hairs here if you're putting ground on it it is underground it's in the word look at that
08:28oh whoa oh wow
08:37kim right now this is nice this is the living room dining room
08:46well this skylight is doing a world of wonders because this could very easily feel like you know
08:51dark and cave-like but it is not at all what is the story of how this thing got built this home
08:57was built in 1972 it was commissioned by an architect who was an understudy of frank lloyd bright
09:04it was very important to him to integrate the interiors and the exteriors seamlessly as he's
09:09done beautifully here i love it i love how all these built-ins like join the curves isn't it beautiful
09:16all of the mahogany built-ins all original did you have to like tweak or zhuzh anything there was
09:21certainly restoration work that's been done but largely you're looking at the original time capsule
09:28nothing in the home has been replaced that did not absolutely have to be replaced want to see the
09:33kitchen yes this is so cool and like even the doors have to be like custom built this is nuts
09:45here's the kitchen what a kitchen so cool look at all this light you got in here and these cutouts
09:57here that are just all throughout this is from the 70s then yes it is but it still fits this mid-century
10:04modern look with these cabinets how did you find this place a friend of mine posted uh the home from
10:13zillow gone wild well i've heard of that so i owe you a thank you we did it we made history
10:24we saw the listing and then we're just like let me think about it or um no i was on a hiking trip
10:30in tennessee i contacted the realtor she said well we've got several offers the odds are stacked against
10:36you jumped in the car i drove 15 hours straight madam and uh threw my hat in the ring i really appreciate
10:43alternative architecture and when i found this home i knew that it was what i've been looking for
10:48i own short-term rentals and i thought i'd make a great short-term rental so this was like an impulse
10:54buy i mean i had 15 hours to think about it again we might be splitting hairs here if i see something
11:00online and then like time to go buy that house that's an impulse buy i stand by that see you in
11:08court kim it's coming this way do you notice the light pictures oh i did this is so smart
11:16see what is next oh what is this
11:29oh my gosh this is the bedroom kim
11:39this has two bedrooms it has two baths each bedroom is a bedroom suite and so right behind this wall you have
11:46your bathroom this is great so i mean like if you're laying there you're able to like look at
11:51this gorgeous skylight the home is really a kaleidoscope for light and nature for every season you have
11:57different lighting awesome if you go this way and open that little window ah now that's some berm dirt
12:09i level with nature this is quite large and you would not notice from outside when you're looking at
12:19a half-buried home and to think zillow gone wild made it happen it's true
12:25ah kim this has been an amazing tour thank you so much thank you thanks for coming thank you bye now
12:37building your house beneath the hillside is certainly a creative way to blend into nature
12:44staying true to the mid-century modern interiors shows commitment to the original design those
12:50passageways built to connect all the spaces without ever going outside definitely adds to the wild
13:01sci-fi house is having an open house today will a prospective buyer embrace its futuristic flair
13:09hi welcome to the future check it out i specialize in very unique extreme properties never see this
13:16before the photography is so important when you list a house like this so we spent hours doing
13:21amazing photography i was curious of privacy with this large window i love the lighting but my neighbor's
13:27gonna yeah no turn around i want you to check this out behind the opaque glass is the toilet wow that's
13:34amazing when he first built being the pioneer there were no comps but what's happened now next door a
13:39really modern house there's more coming and there's been so much more in the last 18 months it doesn't
13:45feel like you're in the city yeah exactly you're not in dallas we'll find out later whether this
13:50futuristic fantasy has found its next owner my journey continues in taos new mexico a vibrant creative hub
14:00known for its adobe and spanish revival architecture just like the listing i'm here to see and i hear it's
14:07quite the art piece all right let's check out this pile of bricks or pile of adobe
14:26jack hello i hope i'm at the right place tell me i'm welcome how are you i'm tom
14:33i'm lavinia and i built this home out of adobe bricks that's quite the doorbell well that's uh
14:38an antique from madison square garden really yeah they'll find bell rings yeah come on in john holy smokes
14:51what is this space for you it's my gallery studio living room i'm an artist and i built this studio in 85.
14:58you built this five years it took to build it okay so you bought the land in 1985 i bought the land
15:05yeah it was an old apple orchard did you know how to like build a place like this or he learned how
15:09to throw adobe bricks with the workmen and there's 38 000 double adobe in this house i was wanting to
15:16build a studio and i started looking around at all the adobe homes and i wanted to build a unique
15:24environment that i loved this is the first home i built from scratch and one of the newest homes
15:31built all out of adobe what's the story with these beams i knew i wanted some unique wood for the home
15:37i found a place that i could harvest the wood brought them down by mule brought them to the car wash wash
15:43washed the mud off of them and brought them here and peeled them it's all the carbels there's 60 of them
15:48they're all cut carbels gotcha that's texas for corbel
15:55corbels lubbers garbles globals gandles corbels
16:02all this decor now are these things special to y'all the house is filled with refurbished antiques
16:08like the windows are from an old church in texas the lights are from seattle and whoever buys this
16:15space is buying a historic piece of property even though it's only 40 years old the newspaper calls
16:21it the newest historical building in taos all the art in here's mine yeah the gallery's open to the
16:27public anytime we're home unless we're upstairs and we lock the doors but this is open he comes downstairs
16:33at eight o'clock and starts working everything in this building is his hands it makes it harder to
16:40think about leaving this house i'm 79 years old we need a one-story one level home we live upstairs would
16:49you like to see the rest of the house well i think it would be rude to say no
16:55these stairs keep us in shape and this is our living space jack wow this is gorgeous
17:04we redid the kitchen here a couple of years ago and i ran this copper band around here to
17:11hold it all together and the more stained glass windows there jack that tom collected from texas
17:16uh here's our bedroom oh okay
17:26in this part of the house there are two bedrooms upstairs and two baths and then two bedrooms in
17:31the casitas across the way yes and people like that when we have a lot of company and people have
17:37their privacy and so do we so it works good the next room is our favorite room okay i'm following you
17:48what is all of this
17:53oh this is great
17:55so jack a lot of people think this is a church because of all the stained glass
18:04this used to just be a porch that i was sunbathing on yeah and tom needed a space for a stained glass
18:17so he built another space and then i had no place so then he went up higher and he built his tower
18:23but i mean you're right i mean when you just see all the stained glass from the outside you're
18:28like oh what is this right place of worship are you game for going upstairs look at these knees i paid
18:34good money for these knees
18:41we're one of the highest points in taos at the top of this building and we have great views to everywhere
18:47so this is now my new sunbathing spot oh so this is the top of the outdoor sun room that we're in
18:54yes it is yes it is you can see all the way down to abiquiu and this way is wheeler peak where tom
19:01harvested those beams you saw in the house when i moved here i had horses out in the pasture and i built
19:07this as a barn back through those trees you're looking straight at pueblo land so we're very close
19:12um so the taos pueblo yes yes yes and this old abandoned adobe is 200 years old this is part of
19:19an old land grant i love that you have an affection for history and what came before you who is here
19:26before you that's really cool oh thank you i love history too and i'm a part of it now i guess yes you
19:33are you have certainly created a beautiful and wonderful and warm place good luck with everything thank you
19:40guys will cozy adobe brush aside the competition and bring home the plaque the home was built using
19:48centuries-old adobe techniques and locally sourced wood they are so committed to the home they're still
19:55adding to it which only further demonstrates their strong connection to what they've created
20:01and the home doubling as a public art gallery shows just how vital this space is to the community
20:10before we reveal which home wins the plaque let's check in on our current listings sci-fi house and cozy
