The number of female apprentice jockeys is sky-rocketing across Australia. Country cups in WA's north-west have been dominated by female riders, both in the field and on the winner's podium.

00:00It's Cup Day in Carnarvon and the riders are ready for race 4.
00:079 out of 13 jockeys are women.
00:10Since I've been race riding it's been a great experience, all the opportunities I've been given.
00:15Holly Nottle is among 8 apprentice jockeys making an appearance at the Cup.
00:19She hails from a farm in Brookton.
00:21Coming to the country tracks is honestly such a different experience from the city tracks.
00:27The environment of the people, it's all so different and there's always a crowd that turns up and it really whits your spirits.
00:34In WA, 11 out of 12 apprentice jockeys for the past season are female.
00:39It's not like 20, 30 years ago where it was definitely a lot tougher for the females,
00:44but we've had our time to be able to prove that we can be as strong and can be as competitive as the males.
00:50A change reflected across Northern WA over the winter racing season.
00:54Out of 10 country cup winning jockeys, 7 were women.
00:57In Carnarvon, Austin Gilardi bucked that trend.
01:00But he'll have to work hard to continue beating this field of talented up and comers.
01:04I just think girls are going to dominate the sport from this day onwards.
01:08Odds are on the next Carnarvon Cup winner will be a woman.
