00:00She feels like she is being encroached upon in public.
00:03People are touching her.
00:05She says that people have been stalking her family,
00:07have been trying to follow them.
00:09Leonardo DiCaprio had a number of stalkers.
00:12Rihanna has had a number.
00:14Also, there was this incident with Miley Cyrus.
00:19There was an individual, David Rumsey,
00:22that had been involved in several altercations in 2018 in Southern Nevada.
00:28Mainly dealing with threats to blow up casino properties,
00:33some sexual assaults to family members.
00:36He had been posting a lot of stuff, reference,
00:41what we categorize as kind of a messiah complex,
00:43that he believed that he was God,
00:45and to essentially be able to ascend to his throne as the messiah
00:50was that he needed to impregnate Miley Cyrus.
00:53And that he had a hotel room ready for her.
00:56In September of 2019,
00:59we have the iHeart Music Festival in Las Vegas.
01:05Miley Cyrus would be one of the performers.
01:08We had postings on his social medias
01:10where he was hanging outside of the venue itself
01:13and messaging Miley,
01:17saying, hey, I'm here, I'm waiting for you,
01:19I'm looking forward to meeting you.
01:22He was taken into custody without incident.
01:25He started making some spontaneous utterances
01:28about why he was there,
01:31that he wanted to impregnate Miley.
01:32To me, it would be categorized as a sexual assault
01:37because he did not have a known relationship with her.
01:39So for me, I would see that as violent behavior.
01:43It would be concerning for me.
01:44The problem for me was that her security team
01:49never told her about the threats.
01:50They kept it away from her.
01:52She has a social media person,
01:54so these tweets are not even getting to her.
01:58So she told me she was not aware.
02:00She told me she wasn't in fear.
02:02Most security companies probably try
02:04and keep a lot of that information away from the celebrity
02:08to protect them and allow them to be able to focus on
02:11whatever it is they're doing.
02:13But it makes it difficult for us to prosecute.
02:16You'd be arrested for a felony related to making threats.
02:20But when I went to court,
02:21Mr. Rumsey pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts.
02:25And he would...
02:25On ID.
02:31Cons being in the spotlight
02:32are things like having your privacy invaded
02:36when you're not really up for that.
02:38You know, if it's 4.30 a.m.
02:42and I'm on the way to a flight,
02:44then you might not be able to stand and take 10 pictures.
02:49You might not be able to, you know,
02:50speak to someone's sister that they called on FaceTime.
02:54And then you don't want to make anyone mad
02:56or feel like you're ungrateful.
02:58Being a fan can be actually sort of an enriching experience.
03:02You can develop a community.
03:03You can have a purpose.
03:04You can have fun with it.
03:06A lot of people know some of the fan groups
03:08like the Swifties or the Deadheads.
03:11There are organizations out there
03:13that actually have a public presence themselves
03:15that are just fan groups.
03:16But there is a distinction between fan and fanatic.
03:20Fanatic is when you're obsessional,
03:23you are having trouble functioning
03:26in other areas of your life,
03:27typically relationships, sometimes work and school.
03:30Mood disturbances can develop.
03:31And a fanatic has the potential to become a stalker.
03:37It becomes this thing now
03:39where if they post a second time
03:40and that person does not acknowledge them now,
03:43that they start to develop this potential grievance
03:46where, well, I posted the first time,
03:48they acknowledged me, now they're not.
03:50Why are they not answering me?
03:52Hey, this person doesn't like me,
03:54and now I have gotten to the point where a violin...
03:57That did not make me feel that much more comfortable.
03:59But I put it in my guitar case
04:01and we carried it around from show to show.
04:04We also started carrying his mugshot
04:06and giving it to promoters
04:08so that they would be able to recognize him.
04:11They were not that happy
04:12about having this additional responsibility
04:15because, remember, I'm opening for these larger acts.
04:18You're supposed to be the easy-to-work-with,
04:20bring-a-big-crowd,
04:22all-fun-times opener.
04:24That's the opener's job.
04:26And it became not that easy to work with me
04:29because I had this ongoing lawsuit
04:32that was following me around
04:33that required additional attention from each venue
04:35to make sure that nothing went down
04:37while they were liable.
04:39I became a problem.
04:41And as you're trying to grow your career,
04:43that's a killer for getting any of the big shows
04:45that you once thought were easy to get.
04:47I mean, you have an immediate red flag.
04:51There are no words.
04:53Brand new on The Case with Paula Zahn,
04:56Thursday on ID.
