Pompey boss John Mousinho talks to The News after his side's 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday
Transcript
00:01John, what are your thoughts on today's result, please?
00:03Yeah, really, really poor results and we got what we deserved
00:07and Sheffield Wednesday were far better than us.
00:09Why do you think they were far better than you?
00:11They outfought us, outrun us, outcompeted, were better on the ball,
00:15poor clinical, made better decisions in every department.
00:18So, yeah, all of those things add up to a 2-0 loss and maybe could have been more.
00:22Can you put your finger on why that was today?
00:24No, it's really difficult. I think it's really difficult,
00:26particularly after the positive performances in the first five games.
00:29We had an extremely positive performance last week
00:31and everybody came off the pitch there thinking we'd be taking a massive step forward.
00:35But, yeah, there's some really concerning signs, I think, that you look at today
00:40and maybe that's a lot of complacency that's crept into the group thinking
00:44this was going to be a much more straightforward game than the others
00:47and we tried to protect against that.
00:48We spoke all week about how unlucky Sheffield Wednesday have been
00:52and how when you give any side anything to hold on to
00:55with the good players that they've got, then they're going to punish you.
00:58Especially concerning signs such as what?
01:00Exactly that, the complacency there and the fact that we started the game so poorly
01:04and made awful decisions and just went away from what we've spoken about.
01:07Under you at front and par, we don't see that often, do we?
01:10No, I genuinely thought that this group would sort of turn the corner
01:15in terms of putting in those sort of performances.
01:18It's happened, it has happened previously, but to happen today after being so solid and being so impressive,
01:27I think, for the majority of the games this year, it's really concerning.
01:31Did it surprise you after the start you've had to this season?
01:33Yeah, it did, it did. I was always worried and wary of the fact that after you have the highs of last week
01:40and you come into these sort of games and the mentality isn't right
01:43and ultimately the mentality can't have been right because that's the same side that we saw last week
01:47at St Mary's, put together that display. There's a couple of personnel changes but you can take those out of it
01:53because we still had nine other players on the pitch that they played last week
01:56and we're nowhere near that level.
01:58Is it frustration or anger you're feeling at the moment?
02:00Probably more anger than frustration.
02:02What do you say to the players in there?
02:04Very, very similar to what I'm speaking about here, just try to be really candid with them.
02:08Whatever we've done to prepare them to play like this, we'll take on board as a staff
02:12and I'll take on board as a head coach. There's something we've done this week.
02:16We did work hard like I said to try and prevent that and to try and really take that complacency out of our game
02:24but it seems to have crept in.
02:26You obviously have halves where you don't play that well or whatever
02:28but it seems to be for the whole game, is that fair to say?
02:30Yeah, it's a really poor over 90 minutes.
02:33How is Josh Murphy's first of all?
02:35He's OK, Murphy's OK. We tried to get him out on the pitch for today's game.
02:41He just picked up a bit of a knock on his ankle so we're sort of touch and go at the moment.
02:45It's one of those where we're hopeful to get him back next week.
02:48So he'll be fine for the review, should we say?
02:49He should be, yeah. It's a bit of a niggly one, so we'll see.
02:53I mean, to sum up the day really, was that awful sight of Conor Shocknessy
02:57obviously tearing his hamstring. How was he?
02:59Yeah, not great. I think obviously Torres Hamstring, that probably summed up the day.
03:02Torres Hamstring, he conceded with a goal in the same move. So, yeah, he's not good.
03:08Does that sum up the day for you as well?
03:10I suppose so, yeah.
03:13Although, you know, if you look at the goal and go, that was a little bit unlucky,
03:17but the rest of the performance wasn't good enough either.
03:20What did you make of Ben Kilmer's performance?
03:22I thought that we can stand here and we can try and dissect individual performances.
03:28I think I could have made 11 subs at half-time and I did say that to the boys,
03:33so I don't think anybody was good enough today.
03:35He actually made some saves as well though, didn't he? Could have been worse.
03:38Yeah, absolutely. There's some good things that we saw in there.
03:43I think the biggest positive was probably Luton Roo coming on in the second half
03:46and playing as well as he did, but I'm sure players are under no illusions they could be better.
03:51What did you make of Ben's game then overall today?
03:54Neil, I don't know. I'll have to have a look at it back and go there
03:58and I'm not in the process of singing out any individuals. Thank you.
