Mercury should never be placed with gold because it surrounds it, literally consuming it, and turning it into a worthless object called an amalgam.

Removing mercury from gold is extremely difficult because it requires extreme caution during the evaporation process due to mercury's high toxicity.

00:00This is what's known as the legendary gold eater, mercury.
00:04It has the ability to make gold submit to it.
00:06When gold is placed in mercury and then removed, it forms what's called an amalgam, a mixture
00:10of mercury and metals.
00:12It may appear as though mercury has simply coated the gold with an outer layer, but in
00:15reality the mercury has actually eaten the gold.
00:18When you cut it open, you can clearly see that even the inside of the gold has turned
00:22silver.
00:23So, never let gold come into contact with mercury, otherwise your gold will be reduced
00:28to scrap.
