00:01Father David here, and at the risk of sounding provocative, and I don't mean to, it's important

00:07to recognize that Scripture is not the Word of God.

00:12Jesus is the Word of God.

00:15And this is a very important distinction, because while Scripture certainly contains

00:21the words of God, it is in its entirety a collection of conversations going back

00:29thousands of years between humanity and God.

00:33And the fact that we often misunderstand what is written down in Scripture is evidenced

00:40by the fact that Jesus came to live among us, to teach us what and how to read Scripture,

00:48but more importantly, what and how to live with one another.

00:53Because the message of Jesus is that love is the defining force in this world.

00:59And therefore, love must be the defining love, the defining lens through which we read and

01:07understand Scripture.

01:09How often we use Bible verses to beat one another over the head in hatred or bigotry or feelings

01:16of self-importance.

01:17And that is wrong.

01:19It's a misuse of Scripture, and it's a misunderstanding of who and what Jesus is for us.

01:25So, I say again, Scripture is not the Word of God, although it contains the words of God.

01:34Jesus is the Word of God, alive and moving in this world, enlightening our minds and offering

01:42us a different way to encounter each other and to live life in this world.

01:47It's a life of freedom and openness and caring for the least among us.

01:53And I think if we keep our eye on this important distinction, we can go a long way in becoming

02:00who we are called to be.
