00:00When I was appointed, I decided I would speak more often and more openly, where doing so could
00:07advance Britain's national interest. In my first public intervention at the Royal United Services
00:13Institute in London, I posited the paradox that MI6 needed to be to be more open to stay secret.
00:22I was communicating a fundamental truth about the world we now operate in.
00:27If we are to remain an effective intelligence service in the 21st century and keep the identities
00:34of our agents and the tradecraft we use to run them secret, we must continue to modernize
00:40and adapt, extending our partnerships, especially in technology, and strengthening our relationship
00:47with the society we serve, whether via social media, where we launched on Instagram last
00:52week, or through speeches like this one.
00:54And to do that, we need to be more open.
