00:00End of the season, a very long and illustrious Grand Prix career.
00:03Hamilton is now really attacking Kovalainen as they come down the start, finish straight.
00:08He's up the inside, along the pit wall, just as they were on the opening lap.
00:11Is he going to make a move into Copse? It's a very, very fast corner. He backs out of it.
00:16There's a lot of white lines and grid hatchings through Woodco.
00:19It's easy flat in the dry. I think Lewis had to get out of the throttle there because he had a run.
00:24He had a better line out, the sort of carting line, if you like.
00:28Found better traction and looked as if he could get the job done against Kovalainen there.
00:33And suddenly fell back and Raikkonen just watching that all go on in third place.
00:38Yeah, Raikkonen hoping these two will trip over each other as Lewis has another look on the run down to Stoke Corner.
00:45Meanwhile, Heifelt in the BMW is trying towards the end of last season.
00:48Hamilton winning that race, but of course, remember on that day, it was Kovalainen in the Renault who finished in second place.
00:55Again, underlining his credentials in this kind of condition.
00:58Hamilton is just closing right up now on the back of his teammate.
01:01The front of his car snaking around and you can see he's right up behind the rear wing now.
01:06It's a lot of work for Hamilton to keep this car pointing in the straight line.
01:09On the run down the hangar straight then towards Stoke.
01:12Up to 190 miles an hour.
01:14And this is where Mansell passed Piquet.
01:16And now Hamilton has gone past Kovalainen in an equally memorable pass.
01:20Up the inside into Stoke and now will he drive away or will Kovalainen come back at him?
01:26Hamilton's got to get on with it.
01:27Alonso is just six seconds behind them and lapping over a second a lap faster in a current fourth place.
01:34And I think had Lewis not have done that, the McLaren team would have been asking Heike to let him through.
01:40Let's see what kind of pace Hamilton's got now.
01:43Because Alonso and Raikkonen to a large extent are threatening to close in on this pair.
01:48And look at the closing speed.
01:50Lewis had a full 70 metres behind him.
01:53And that just doesn't bother to break.
01:56In fact, I'm wondering if Heike had already been told to let him through.
02:00Although Kovalainen tried to come back into Vail.
02:03Ted's got some news.
02:04Yeah, and I've been watching this develop down at McLaren.
02:06I mean, Martin Heike would have known Lewis' strategy.
02:09And he would have known that, as we think, Lewis is a couple of laps lighter than himself.
02:14But a great little cameo played out on the pit wall.
02:17Ron Dennis and Martin Whitmarsh discussing the situation with it between themselves.
02:21And then getting on to the engineers.
02:23And the engineers talking to both drivers.
02:25McLaren could be on for a 1-2 here at their home race.
02:29They don't want anything to get in that way.
02:30Well, it's very early days, Ted.
02:32We've still got 55 laps to go here.
02:34Now we will see what kind of pace Hamilton has got.
02:37He's free of his teammate.
02:39Meanwhile, we had a safety car.
02:42And Ted Kravitz, tell us about Hamilton's pit stop.
02:44Yeah, they're out.
02:45They're out for Lewis.
02:45Is it enough?
02:46What's the gap now, James?
02:48About 15 seconds.
02:49It's not enough.
02:50It's not enough.
02:51It is not enough.
02:52Lewis is going to have to pass Felipe Massa on the racetrack.
02:56Okay, so the gamble did not pay off.
02:58There go the soft tyres.
02:59Let's hope they hang on for as long as he needs to.
03:02We're going to have some overtaking, boys.
03:04Well, let's hope we have some overtaking.
03:05He's going to rejoin right next to his teammate, Kovalainen,
03:08who I imagine will not fight too hard for that position.
03:10Or maybe he will.
03:11I don't know, but it's not worked out at all for Hamilton.
03:15Extraordinary decision then on the part of McLaren.
03:18The only way you would not have pitted him would be if you were absolutely comfortable that you could build a cushion.
03:23He'd done really well.
03:25He built 15.7 seconds gap over Massa, but he ran out of laps to do it.
03:30And now that means that at the moment, Heidfeld's leading, but he has to stop again.
03:34Piquet is second, and he does not have to stop again.
03:37Then it's Massa, and Hamilton's got a lot of work to do.
03:40A certain victory would appear to have been snatched away from him.
03:43Yes, if Hamilton wants to win this race, he's got to pass Kovalainen.
03:47He's got to pass Massa and Piquet.
03:50Piquet could well end up leading this race shortly from a dismal one-stopper pace earlier on
03:58that the safety car played beautifully into.
04:00But will Kovalainen yield to the clearly faster Hamilton this afternoon and let him get on with it?
04:08Because it's quite a critical phase now, especially with those new soft tyres.
04:12He doesn't want to be sliding around in the slipstream of his teammate, graining up those tyres.
04:17He needs these early critical laps.
04:20Will McLaren do anything about this?
04:22Can they do anything about it?
04:24Will Kovalainen yield?
04:26Well, we talked about it all about being poised and measured.
04:29You've got to drive these soft tyres quite cautiously for the first couple of laps to stop you from graining.
04:35Following other cars also makes them grained as well, apparently.
04:38So Hamilton needs to get on with it, but at the same time, he needs to make sure he doesn't take too much out of the tyres.
04:44We'll be asking a lot of questions, I think, at the end, as you can see Ron Dennis there, the boss of McLaren,
04:49about the tactical naus of McLaren in Silverstone as he dives down the inside of Kovalainen shortly after Ron Dennis making some sort of communication there on the pit wall.
05:00Didn't seem to put up too much of a fight there, Kovalainen.
05:03But in Silverstone, Ferrari got it all wrong.
05:06They put the wrong tyres, or didn't change the tyres on Raikkonen, the first pit stop, and it cost him massively.
05:11Here it would appear that not pitting Hamilton under the safety car has cost him massively.
05:17Right, so the only sensible thing to do, Lewis has been three-quarters of a second faster than Heike most of the afternoon.
05:26And, you know, there'll be coded words, or there'll just be common sense involved in let Lewis through.
05:33Heike may have done it for him, may have worked it all out for himself.
05:36But Heike felt does a new fastest lap of the race on lap 52, leading the Grand Prix.
05:41We believe he has to stop again.
05:43Piquet's 13.4 seconds behind him, doesn't have to stop again.
05:48So Hamilton then has got to catch Massa, who's four seconds up the road,
05:53and then Piquet, who's a further two seconds up the road.
05:57Bit of a slow burner this Grand Prix.
05:59Slow to start, but it's going to be an extraordinary finish.
06:0215 laps to go.
06:04Heike felt leads, Piquet is second, Massa is third, Hamilton fourth, Kovalainen fifth.
06:11As we take another look at Hamilton, just squeezing up the inside of his teammate.
06:16Well, clearly synchronized swimming going on there between the two McLaren's.
06:19It's the obvious thing to do.
06:22And Kovalainen getting to the outside.
06:27It wasn't, quite clearly, Lewis wasn't expecting it, was he?
06:30Because he was following him in, Alonso still...
06:34I forget he was following him.
06:40There's a lot of seasons in this country.
06:42Let's see that he was going where he was, him until she was teaching them in the inside,
06:44we took the first time home and the middle school was going to get to it.
06:47So obviously I did not call it the opposite.
06:49He kötü was here, and he happened to myself if he was in that environment.
06:50So obviously he couldn't do it.
06:53You know, he had to have more meals than that though.
