00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio on World No Tobacco Day.
00:37It's a World Health Organization project and a very worthy one, too, because they're really saying that tobacco is a threat to development.
00:45And I'm sure it is, too.
00:47But what is extraordinary is that Europe, generally speaking, Rachel, from when I was a child, has become a sort of, you know, essentially a no tobacco zone.
01:00This country, really, do many of your friends smoke?
01:03I bet they don't.
01:05No, not anymore.
01:06One did, actually.
01:06But I bought her a hypnotist's stop smoking couple of sessions for Christmas and she hasn't smoked for a few months now.
01:14She's been fantastic.
01:15Yeah, actually, you're looking at somebody who, because they started smoking at 17 now, is a bit puffed out sometimes, even though I haven't smoked in 20 years.
01:24So anybody watching, pack it in.
01:27Dreadful.
01:29Rachel, the Moose is here.
01:31I wonder whether he's going to make it today.
01:34Head of Risk Management from Halstead.
01:36Seven games down for the Moose.
01:38And he's got the highest score of the series at 132.
01:42You're up against Michael Metcalf, a retired priest and educationalist from Stafford, who clambered up Kilimanjaro at the age of 66.
01:52And you said it was just a great, immense pleasure and achievement, really.
01:56It was a very big experience.
01:58I thoroughly enjoyed it.
01:59And I'd love to do it again if I could.
02:02Excellent.
02:02Well done.
02:03Let's have a big round of applause for Michael and the Moose.
02:08Michael and the Moose.
02:12Sounds like a pop band, doesn't it?
02:14Michael and the Moose.
02:15Anyway.
02:15We'll get together.
02:17Over in the corner, we've got Susie and, of course, radio and TV broadcaster Dan Walker.
02:23Afternoon to you again.
02:26Lovely.
02:29Now, let's get down to business.
02:31Important day, Moose.

03:56Amusing. Amusing. Now, Moose, what are you up to? Measuring. Measuring. Measuring. I think Michael spotted it. Well done. These nines, they really crack out the numbers, don't they? 18 points. But what have we got in the corner? Dan and Susie?
04:19Well, you could actually, you could be measuring geraniums, actually. There's another nine in there. Oh, well done. So, Michael, off we go.

05:42What does the Moose say? Tadpoles. Tadpoles? Absolutely fine. We love tadpoles. And opalites are absolutely fine. You can put the S on. They are different varieties of opal, essentially. Derivatives of opal. Absolutely brilliant.
05:58Well done. And the corner? There is a spoliated. Is there a spoliated? You both know about this one. It's to, to spoliate is to rob or plunder. Similar to despoil, of course.
06:10Spoils, yeah. Yeah. So, spoliated will give you a nine. Well done.
06:14Well done, Susie. So, 26 plays eight. And we return to the Moose for a numbers game. First of the day.
06:23Thank you. One large one, please.
06:26Yeah, same as usual. Thank you, Moose. One large one. And five little ones. And for the first time today.

08:29Just some targets.
08:30Because she was a sales girl.
08:33A sales girl.
08:34But Rachel had a target and she's reached it, I think.
08:376, 7, 4.
08:38Nice segue.
08:38Yes, if you say 6 times 5 is 30, minus the other 6, 24, plus the 54, 74, times the 9, by the devil, for 6, 6, 6, 6, and add the 8.
08:52Yeah, well done.

13:18So in that case, Michael, we'll turn to you.
13:21A bit tortuous.
13:237 plus 3 is 10.
13:24It is.
13:2510 over 10 is 1.
13:26Yep.
13:279 minus 1 is 8.
13:29There we go.
13:30Times the 100.
13:31800.
13:32Is 800 plus 4.
13:33Perfect.
13:34Well done, Michael.
13:34Yeah, very good.
13:39On place 26 now as we turn to Dan.
13:43Now, Dan.
13:44Yes.
13:44Where's Maria in all this?
13:46Well, this is the final part of the Maria story, which I've been telling you all this
13:50week.
13:50So for those of you who haven't seen the last two days, we've met this amazing lady, Maria,
13:54while we've been covering the Olympic Games in Brazil.
13:57I've interviewed her live on the television.
13:59The video's gone viral, watched by millions of people around the world.
14:02I've been invited to her wedding, not only by Maria, but by her mum, by her dad, and by
14:06loads of Brazilians as well.
14:08But at the end of the Games, by this point, I knew Maria relatively well.
14:12We've been in conversation both in person and on social media.
14:15And I explained to her that as much as I would love to, I couldn't come back to Brazil a month
14:19after the Olympics to come back for the wedding.
14:21It wasn't an expense thing.
14:23It wasn't a timing thing.
14:23But I've been away for much of the summer at the Euros and then at the Olympic Games.
14:28So I needed to spend some time with my family.
14:30And also, a wedding is all about the bride, isn't it?
14:32I didn't want any attention to be taken away from her by having potentially TV cameras shoved
14:38in her face.
14:39She understood.
14:40And I thought that would be the end of my Brazilian adventure when I left Rio de Janeiro
14:45at the end of the Olympic Games.
14:46I was very wrong.
14:48So I touched down in London and I've got a message on my phone straight away.
14:53And it's the Brazilian ambassador.
14:55And the message says, your relationship with Maria has captivated our nation.
15:00You've showed our country, he says, in a beautiful light.
15:03And we'd like to say thank you.
15:06And I was invited to the Brazil Day extravaganza, which takes place every year in Trafalgar Square
15:11in London.
15:12It so happened I was in London on that day anyway.
15:14The ambassador's there.
15:15I get, you know, he gives me a massive hug.
15:18He asks me if I'm going to the wedding, which is about a week after this Brazil Day.
15:22I took a picture of myself and him.
15:24I sent it to Maria and said, look what you've done here.
15:26And then the organizer of the event says, we don't just want you to come here.
15:30We'd love you to come and speak to the crowd.
15:32Now, there were 50,000 people in Trafalgar Square.
15:37And I said, nobody wants to hear from me.
15:38And he goes, no, no, honestly, honestly, we've told everybody that you're coming.
15:41Come on stage.
15:42So I get taken around the back of the stage.
15:44And then they announce me on stage.
15:45And then the guy puts me on the spot and says, right, you've got 50,000 people here.
15:49Are you going to the wedding?
15:50And I say, I'm really sorry.
15:51I can't go.
15:52And I get booed off stage by 50,000 Brazilians.
15:57I mean, it was a lovely day.
15:58And there is a really weird ending to this as well.
16:02Because obviously, I couldn't go to the wedding.
16:04And Maria got married a week after that.
16:06But she sent me a picture because she asked everybody to come to the wedding with a face mask of me.
16:13So I've shown it to Susie.
16:15I've got the picture of hundreds of people at a wedding.
16:19It's such a strange and a weird place to be.
16:21But I suppose the moral of the story is that if you ever see a hen party, get involved.
16:27Because genuinely, I met this woman in Brazil.
16:31And now we're friends for life.
16:32We send each other Christmas presents.
16:34Wonderful.
16:34We speak regularly.
16:35It's a beautiful end to a rather bizarre story.
16:38It's a great story.
16:39It's a great story.
16:4440 plays 26.
16:46Moose in the lead at the moment.
16:47And it's Moose's letters game.

18:12Hmm.
18:13I don't think you have the I in it.
18:15Um, no, in English, Thane, uh, so, um, a military nobleman, really, in Anglo-Saxon England.
18:23But it's T-H-E-G-N, without the I, I'm afraid, Michael.
18:27Dan and Susie?
18:28Well, uh, sort of going down the, the nobleman route, there is an, I think the Moose has just found it.
18:32There is an, there is an eight in there, knighted.

24:41Eight.
24:42Moose.
24:43Ailerons.
24:44Both of you?
24:45Ailerons.
24:46Moose aircraft need two, I think.
24:48Well done.
24:52Well done.
24:53All right, 71, page 49, as we turn to Susie and her wonderful origins of words.
24:59Now then, today, Susie?
25:01Well, as regular viewers will know, and I always say this,
25:04it's very rare that you can actually pinpoint the exact origin of a phrase.
25:09Idioms are particularly hard to pin down.
25:12The same goes for new idioms, new expressions that are created today,
25:16especially with global media.
25:18Finding the exact origin is very, very hard.
25:21I'm going to talk about a word which we can trace back to a single moment in time,
25:26and it's a lovely story, but it involves a word that you may not have heard of.
25:29It's one of my favourites, and it's a panjandrum.
25:34I don't know if you've heard of panjandrum.
25:35It's a lovely word.
25:36But it goes back to an Irish actor, Charles Macklin.
25:40And I'll explain what panjandrum means a little bit later.
25:43But he retired from the London stage.
25:45He was quite a good actor in about the 1750s,
25:48and he decided to open a tavern near the Drury Lane,
25:52which is the scene of many of his successes.
25:54And it became his custom in this new role of tavern keeper, innkeeper,
25:59to serve dinner personally to his guests, to add that personal touch.
26:04And then afterwards, he would deliver a lecture or a story.
26:08He apparently really liked the sound of his own voice.
26:11But he was apparently also quite pompous,
26:13and so the younger actors who would gather there
26:15often quite liked to make him say, as he was wont to do,
26:18that he could remember absolutely anything that was said to him,
26:23and he would be able to repeat it back parrot fashion.
26:26And on one such occasion, a witty young actor, Samuel Foote,
26:29composed the following nonsense lines.
26:31So she went into the garden to cut a cabbage leaf to make an apple pie,
26:35and at the same time, a great she-bear coming up the street
26:37popped its head into the shop.
26:39What? No soap? So he died. It went on.
26:43Sadly, history doesn't relate whether this wonderful actor
26:46was able to repeat it back verbatim,
26:49but the lines became a famous test for anyone's memory,
26:52and as I say, they were actually a bit longer than that.
26:54And then, some time later, Edward Fitzgerald,
26:57who's an author and a translator,
27:00took panjandrum and decided it was the most wonderful term
27:04for a pompous individual,
27:06and particularly an official or a politician.
27:09So now panjandrum has slipped into the English language
27:11to mean somebody who is overly smug,
27:14slightly arrogant about their own self-importance,
27:16and is usually, as I say, in public office.
27:19And I think, sadly, it's one that we would find quite useful today.
27:22Fantastic. Very good.
27:2771 plays 49, and it's Michael's letters game.
27:31Consonant, please, Rachel.

28:43Muted and?

28:46And tamed indeed, yeah.
28:48Anything else there?
28:50Well, we've got a five as well, an acted.
28:52I have no idea what this word might mean, but it looks strangely familiar.
28:56Cordate, C-A-U, date.
28:57Is that even a word?
28:58Yes, you are on fire today.
28:59It's a theological term, and it describes any animal that has a tail.
29:03Really?
29:04Well, I have no idea where that's come from, but I'll take it.
29:07Very good.
29:08Very good.
29:08Well done.

30:28Seven, not written down.
30:30What would that be, Michael?
30:31Plaster.
30:32Plaster and patrols.
30:34Absolutely fine.
30:35How did the corner do?
30:37A potsel is in there as well for a seven,
30:39but you've...
30:40Very good.
30:41So you've dropped an eight down somewhere.
30:42There is an eight there, yes.
30:43It's an anatomical term, petrosal,
30:46and it is relating to the dense part of the temporal bone
30:50at the base of the skull.
30:51So you have the temporal bone,
30:53and then you have the petrosal.
30:56Well, well.
30:56Right at the base of the skull.
30:57All right.
31:00So Moose on 83, and Michael on 61,
31:03as we turn to Michael for the final numbers game.
31:06Michael?
31:07Just one large and five small, please, Rachel.
31:09Thank you, Michael.
31:10One from the top, five not from the top,
31:12for the final one of the day.
31:13And this selection is nine, two, ten, eight, four,

33:09And you ran him closer than anybody.
33:11Did he?
33:12Yeah.
33:12Not quite close enough.
33:13Very well.
33:14So thank you very much for coming.
33:15And take this goodie bag back to Stafford and your good work too.
33:21Well done.
33:22And the moose?
33:24I mean, eight games in a row.
33:27That's tough, isn't it?
33:29You have no idea.
33:30You know, I mean, you were in blistering form.
33:35And then suddenly eight, and then you began to wobble a little bit.
33:38And that's because it's tough.
33:40And people at home don't realise that actually to win day after day after day is something.
33:45Anyway, you're our number three seed.
33:47You go and have a good rest and we'll see you in the finals.
33:49Fantastic performance.

34:07Not bad at all.
34:10It'll be sad to see him go, won't it?
34:11I was about to echo Dan's thoughts.
34:1393.
34:14Yeah.
34:15It shows how well moose has done for that to be a wobble.
34:18Absolutely.
34:18Michael put a very brave fight with the numbers especially.
34:20All right.
