00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Thank you very much.
01:0042 pence.
01:0042? How many people must they carry for that to be worthwhile at all?
01:04I don't know. I'll tell you what. I took a train in Latvia through Estonia in the winter. It was fantastic. Each carriage had two women guards. They were stern-faced women.
01:19But one of them, I managed to get a smile out of because I admired her cowboy boots, which had rhinestones sort of plugged into them. And I made a fuss of her. And it's something about the Russians. You may know a lot more about this than I do.
01:32But they can be very, very hard. But when their hearts soften, they are the most wonderful people. Does that ring a bell with you?
01:43All the ones I've met are lovely.
01:45Of course they are. I'll tell you who is much loved by Countdown viewers. It's the Moose, Moose Rosser. He's got six under his belt, scoring 119 last time out. Fantastic. But now you've got to get past Gareth Davies.
02:00Gareth is from Wem in Shropshire. Loves his music. Loves his Bob Dylan and his Johnny Cash. Is that right?
02:06That's right.
02:07Who doesn't? But you also compose electronic music, I think.
02:11Yeah, I like to try and make music on my laptop. Electronic music.
02:14Do you share it with people or is it just for your own music?
02:17Just my own hobby. My own amusement. Until I get good enough, I suppose.
02:21All right. Good. Well, listen, good luck to you today. This is a very friendly studio.
02:26But that chap over there, he doesn't take any prisoners. Let's see how we get on today.
02:31Big round of applause for Gareth and the Moose.
02:38And, of course, in the corner, Susie, joined once again by Dan Walker, broadcaster, sports fanatic and all-round great storyteller.
02:48Oh, thank you. You've built me up now. What if today's one is an absolute disaster?
02:52It won't be. You're a real pro. It's brilliant.
02:56Now then, Moose, let's get down to business. Let us go.
02:58Thanks, Nick.

06:08It's a nice feeling.
06:09I'm sure it is.
06:11Now, what have we got over there?
06:12There is another nine in there.
06:13You have to go a bit mythical for it, don't you?
06:14You do, yes.
06:16A manticore belongs with the sort of unicorns and centaurs and mermaids.
06:20A manticore is a mythical animal depicted with the body of a lion,

07:46Oh, that is bad luck.
07:47Sorry.
07:48That is bad luck.
07:49All right.
07:50With the score standing at Moose on 36, that's such bad luck, Gareth.
07:53Ah, we have a tea-time teaser, which is sang and noise.
07:59And the clue?
08:00Ooh, baby, baby, salt and pepper's here.
08:03Ooh, baby, baby, salt and pepper's here.

08:22I left with the clue.

08:24Baby, baby, salt and pepper's here.
08:27And the answer to that apparently is seasoning.
08:30Seasoning.
08:31I've no idea what this is all about.
08:32Seasoning.
08:33Moose on 36.
08:36And where shall we go?
08:37Let's go to Gareth for a letters game.

10:05Yeah, we were Vanity, Sanity, Paints is in there for six as well.
10:09Yeah.
10:09Quite a few along the same lines, but we couldn't bet a six.
10:13That'll do.
10:14All right.
10:15So, Gareth's off the blocks there.
10:16Six to Moose's 42, due mainly to a brilliant nine.
10:21And it's Moose's letters game now.

11:46Two large, four small, please.
11:49Thank you, Gareth.
11:49Two from the top and four small ones for you.
11:52This time the four small ones, eight, five, ten and six,
11:57and the large ones, 50 and 100.

12:52Very good.
12:53Very good.
12:54Propels you up.
12:58Now to 59.
13:0059 points as we turn to Dan.
13:02Now, Dan, yesterday you spoke about Maria.
13:05Yes.
13:05And you promised more about Maria today.
13:07Yes, and it might not end here, the story.
13:10It might carry it on, because she's, for those of you who didn't watch yesterday, she's this
13:12remarkable lady.
13:13And when I was covering the Olympics last year, I interviewed her, her hen party walk past
13:17our studio during the Olympic Games.
13:19And we had a chat, and overnight it was watched by 17 and a half million people around the
13:25world.
13:25So this video of the interview went viral.
13:28And the next day I was getting so many messages from friends back at home on social media,
13:32and I had one from a girl whose sort of avatar was Maria, Brazil Maria.
13:39And it said, I hope I didn't embarrass myself last night.
13:42Thank you so much for looking out for me.
13:45I've spoken to my fiancé.
13:47Would you like to come to the wedding?
13:49So they're getting married on Copacabana Beach about a month after the Olympics back in Brazil.
13:54So loads of the papers pick up on the story about the interview.
13:58She's all over the place in Brazil.
13:59She's on Good Morning America on American TV the next day.
14:03And they're talking about this girl Maria in Russia, in Australia, all over the place.
14:08And for three days, Maria, during the Olympic Games, Maria is the most talked about thing
14:12on Brazilian TV.
14:14In all the papers, she's on every single TV channel.
14:17And I'm starting to get messages now from all over the place saying, you've got to go
14:20to the wedding.
14:21Are you going to the wedding?
14:22And every night we're hosting our program down on Copacabana Beach, and we get a little
14:26crowd outside every single evening.
14:28And one night, a lady who looks a little familiar wanders over and says, just wanted
14:34to say, we're so thankful that you looked after our daughter.
14:37I'm Maria's mum.
14:39I'm here to formally invite you to the wedding in a month's time.
14:43I'm thinking, this is getting really serious.
14:45This is no longer a joke.
14:47So the pressure's building, OK?
14:49I'm getting hundreds of questions about the wedding.
14:51We have British tourists coming up to our studio saying, we're here to meet Maria.
14:55Where is she?
14:55I said, I don't know.
14:56I don't look after Maria.
14:58And then we had another member of the family.
14:59This time, Maria's dad turns up and says, just here to back up what my wife is saying.
15:04We'd love you to come to the wedding.
15:05Please, can you come?
15:06He didn't want to come on television.
15:07Maria's mum had come on TV.
15:09So we're getting all this pressure from various different quarters to come to the
15:13wedding.
15:13I went to the Olympics thinking, you know, it's the greatest sporting show on earth.
15:17And here I am.
15:18And all I'm talking about is this wedding of this lovely young lady called Maria.
15:23And she, by this point, is a really big star in Brazil.
15:27And she keeps asking me every day on social media, are you going to come?
15:30And if you'd like to know what happens with the wedding, you'll have to watch tomorrow.
15:34What a brilliant business.
15:37What a lovely story.
15:38Big day.
15:39Very good.

21:08I live with the clue, busted aren't connected with the answer, but one direction is...
21:13And the answer to that, of course, is westbound.
21:16Westbound.
21:18As if I knew.
21:1984 plays Gareth's 13.
21:22And Gareth, it's your letters game.

22:42Modes.
22:44Very good.
22:45And?
22:45Budgies.
22:46Dan and Susie, what have you conjured up?
22:48There is one seven that we can find, a subcode in linguistics.
22:52It's a code that forms part of a larger code, a secondary code, if you like.
22:56So, that will give us the single seven.
22:59Ninety playing thirties, my word.
23:01Moose.
23:02Letters game.
23:03I think you can possibly do strongly in this game.
23:08Consonant, please, Rachel.
23:09Thank you, Moose.
23:10F.
23:11And a vowel, please.
23:13E.

24:19And that seven?
24:20Retails.
24:21Retails, good.
24:22Moose?
24:23Flakiest.
24:24Very, very good.
24:26Flakiest.
24:27Yes.
24:28Dan and Susie?
24:29Again, the moose has outworded us.
24:31Yep, he got there first.
24:33Susie, anything else?
24:34He certainly did, no.
24:34That was the best that we could find.
24:36Well done.
24:36All right.
24:37So, just 98.
24:39With some way to go, actually.
24:41Moose on 98.
24:42Gareth putting up a brave fight there at 13 as we turn to Susie for her wonderful origins of words.
24:49Well, I'm going to talk about wine today.
24:52It might make you a little bit thirsty because the Romans absolutely loved wine.
24:57They gave us the name wine that comes from their word vinum in Latin.
25:02It also gave us wine, vinegar, vintage, and also vinyl, which was a surprise to me when
25:08I learned that one.
25:09That's a plastic created from a derivative of ethylene, and that's a naturally occurring
25:14gas that's given off by ripening fruit.
25:16But some surprising words in English that came from that Roman love of wine.
25:20Sturdy being one of my favorite.
25:22I'm not completely sure about this, but we think it's actually related to the thrush,
25:26because in Roman times you wouldn't be as drunk as a newt.
25:29You would be as drunk as a thrush.
25:32Turdus being the Latin name for a thrush.
25:36And ex-turdus actually meant to be stunned or dazed.
25:40And the connection between being stunned and being a thrush was it's thought that these
25:44birds would feed off the grapes that were falling on the ground after harvest and would
25:49get a little bit drunk and would totter around.
25:51And eventually, through many, many permutations, Sturdy moved from being dazed to then reckless
25:59to being hard to manage and eventually to being obstinate, and of course to the adjectives
26:04that we know today.
26:05But there's another word, another verb in English that's related to this love of wine,
26:09and this is a really surprising one, and that's oscillating.
26:13And oscillating probably goes back to little images of the Roman god Bacchus that vintners
26:19would hang in their orchards, either to please the gods or to frighten birds away.
26:26Oscilla, which was the name for these masks, actually goes back to a word for little mouth,
26:31because the main feature of these images were the mouth of Bacchus, celebrating the intake
26:36of wine, etc.
26:38Gave us osculate, which means to kiss today.
26:40Ocetant, which means yawny, if you're particularly yawny or using your mouth.
26:44But because these little images, that they would hang on trees, as I say, around the vineyards,
26:48would swing in the breeze, we're still talking about oscillating and swinging in the breeze today.
26:54Stunning! Well done.
26:57Very good.
27:009J plays 13, and it's Gareth's letters again.
27:03Good luck, Gareth.
27:04A consonant, please, Rachel.
27:06Thank you, Gareth.
27:07N.
27:09And a vowel.
27:11A.
27:11Consonant.

27:17Another consonant.
27:19J.
27:21Vowel.
27:23O.
27:25Another vowel.
27:27E.
27:30So, another vowel.
27:32I.
27:34And a consonant.
27:36R.
27:39And a consonant.
27:40And, lastly, N.

28:18Yeah, I've got a seven not written down.
28:20What would it be, then?
28:21Jointer.
28:22A jointer.
28:24And Gareth?
28:25Janitor.
28:26And janitor.
28:27Very nice.
28:28You happy with jointer?
28:30Jointer, absolutely.
28:31Yes, in the dictionary, a plane used for preparing a wooden edge for fixing or joining to each other,
28:35the tool used for such masonry and brickwork.
28:39And Dan?
28:40Well, quite close to jointer, actually.
28:43If the Moose wins another one, it might well be the octochamp,
28:45and you could be the anointer of the octochamp.
28:50And if you wanted to do it again, you could re-anoint as well, which is another eight in there.
28:53I think once is quite enough.
28:55All right, 105 for the Moose and Gareth on 20.
28:59Well done, Moose.
29:00Final letters game.

30:23Absolutely fine.
30:25And in the corner, Susie, Dan?
30:27We were wondering whether you could be a nuthead.
30:29Can you be a nuthead?
30:30Yes, you could be a nuthead.
30:33As early as 1908.
30:35A mad or crazy person, a crank or eccentric.
30:38A nuthead.
30:38He's a nuthead.
30:40Anything else?
30:41No.
30:42Haunted was also our one.
30:43Haunted.
30:43Well done.

30:46112 as we go into the final numbers game for Gareth.
30:50I have two large and four small again, please.
30:53Thank you, Gareth.
30:53Two from the top.
30:54Four not from the top for the final one of the day.
30:57And this round is two, five, six, three.
31:02And the large one's 50 and 25.
31:05And the target should reach 180.

32:21So fingers on buzzers, Gareth the Moose.
32:23Let's roll today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:26Moose.
32:27Moose.
32:27In reverence to the great Mr. Durie, Blockhead.
32:39Blockhead.
32:40Blockhead.
32:41Blockhead.
32:41Let's see whether you're right.
32:57Similar to Nuthead.
32:58Well done.
33:00Well done.
33:01Well done.
33:06Well done, Moose.
33:07And actually, you're one point ahead of the highest score that we've had in the series.
33:11Am I?
33:11Yeah.
33:11So I guess that makes you, as it were, should you be clever enough to become an octo jam.
33:18Should I?
33:19Would make you number one seed.
33:21But we're not there yet.
33:22Brilliant stuff though.
33:23Gareth, thank you very much for coming from Wem in Shropshire.
33:27But there's nothing you could do or indeed anybody else could do about that.
33:31Very strong competitor.
33:32Fantastic.
33:33You did very well.
33:35And you're going to take this back to Shropshire with you.
33:37Great.
33:38With our very best wishes.
33:39And good luck with the music too.
33:40Thanks.

33:47Could be.
33:47All right.
33:47Well done.
33:49Will you join us for that big day?
33:50Can anyone put a noose on the moose?
33:53We shall find out.
33:54That's what we need to find out.
33:55It's like that famous pole vaulter.
33:57He keeps breaking his own record bit by bit by bit.
33:59Now he's got the top one of the series.
34:01Yeah.
34:01See if we can get another one tomorrow.
34:02See you tomorrow.
34:03See you then.
34:04Join us for the Moose's big day tomorrow.
34:06Same time, same place.
